Most home vegetable gardens are looking pretty tired by this time of year. Those spring vegetable plants have a tough time dealing with the long hot days of summer. There may be a few plants still producing like hot peppers, bell peppers, and okra but for the most part the garden is slowly becoming unproductive. Go ahead a start removing old plant material. Diseased plants should be thrown away in the trash can but everything else can go into the compost pile.

WILL AFTON Now would be perfect time to take a soil sample and have it analyzed for its nutrient content. The information you get back will tell you how to fertilize for the fall season. Take several samples of soil from about four top sixth inches below the soil surface. Mix these together in a bucket and submit a sample of the mixture for testing. Use the LSU AgCenter soil test mail-in box for fast service. They can be found at your local extension office, feed store, or garden center. Give it about two weeks for the results to arrive and from there you will know if you need to if you should add lime to raise soil pH or sulfur to lower it. Once you have the garden bed prepared and are waiting on the soil samples results it’s now time to think about what exactly you will be planting. Tomatoes are typically a spring planted crop some gardeners replant late summer with heat set varieties that will fruit into the fall. You will not have enough time if seed them now. The average frost date for our region is Nov 15 and that puts us at close to two months for optimum growing conditions. Squash and zucchini can be very similar. If you replanted back in mid-August then you could be harvesting fruit later in the fall, but if you start now then you may not make it before a frost. Instead of gambling with Mother Nature, a deal in which you will lose, look to grow traditional fall vegetables. Some of these options include broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, collards, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustards, radish, rutabagas, and turnips. Refer to your garden journal for notes on which varieties to use. If you don’t have anything written down then use the LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide. It can be found at your local extension office and is also available online at www.lsuagcenter.com. Good luck on your fall garden.

Fall Lawn Care The fall season is an important time in the life your lawn grass. As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, your lawn grass will start to prepare itself for the oncoming dormant season. Eventually, you’ll start to notice that growth will slow down and then later in the year the lawn will actually go completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process. We’ll start with mowing. Keep mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time you mow. You also need to use a sharp mowing blade. It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage.

Be careful with fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen plants grow and that we are trying to help our lawn grass go dormant. Late nitrogen can influence lawn disease. The typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including brown patch or large patch. In fact, you should be very observant so that you can notice any onset of disease. It starts out as small dead areas but increase in size overnight if we receive excess rainfall. If you see this happening in your yard apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: propiconazole, myclobutanil, or thiophanate-methyl. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home. Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: Bayer Advanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s Lawn Fungus Control. Whichever you decide on, treat the entire yard so that the disease does not spread. The last thing to think about is weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that come up in the lawn. You can help prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergence herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension and it can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper. Following some of these tips will be extremely beneficial to your lawn care program.

50,000 red-clad Wisconsinites the entire game yelled variations of “Go, Bucky!”, the nickname of Buckingham U. Badger, the Wisconsin mascot.

30,000 purple and gold-clad LSU fans yelled variations of something that sort of rhymed with the Wisconsin mascot’s nickname, directed at the alleged head coach of the Tigers, Les Miles. Thousands of fans would have put about 2,000 Less Miles on their vehicles if they had known the 2016 Tigers were going to play like the exact reincarnation of the 2014 and 2015 Tigers, matching the same game plans, demeanor and general b.s. laid out by one of the most confused and verbally challenged coach in all of college football.

There was absolutely no excuse for what happened at Lambeau Field September 3rd. Either Les Miles is truly mentally incompetent or is so incredibly stupid and pigheaded that he will lay his four-plus million dollar job on the desk and walk out, a well-paid-off but virtually unemployable coach at the major college level. It’s like a guy getting court dates, fines and a suspended sentence for a fourth DUI, then going out, like a doofus, and doing it again. Miles is a combination of Steve Martin in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Jerk. But this is nothing new.

It’s like your third divorce - and finding the same type of person to marry for your fourth time.

Then came last Saturday, when Miles reverted to a semblance of a competent head coach Bucky Badger had a premonition that and replaced Brandon Harris at came true with a Tiger by the tail. quarterback with Danny Etling.

Etling, who is a Purdue transfer, actually played a very confident quarterback position, making only two mistakes, neither of which compared to the panic mistakes made by Harris. Etling completed passes to two different tight ends and no passes to Travis Dural. His stats weren’t impressive but the problems with wideout Malachi Dupree’s ability to hold on to the football had an effect on the final numbers. But the Tigers had a quarterback once again. For one rainy night. Against a team they should beat with anyone at quarterback.

But let’s not anoint Miles with the crown of competency just yet. Leonard Fournette did not play.

And Miles had to do something to get the boo birds off his back, especially against a team like Jacksonville State. So in came Etling. And now the quarterback controversy begins, with 99% of the fans wanting Etling to stay as the starter while Miles probably will do his Shuffle once again and give Harris another chance in the first two series against Mississippi State this weekend. Lord help him. For if Harris becomes Miles’ Jordan Jefferson this year, the fans will walk out en masse.

Darius Guice did a great job in filling in for Fournette at tailback, amassing 155 yards with several long runs and a lot of tough inside running. The offensive line had almost no substitutions the first 50 minutes of the contest, playing a much better game with only a couple of penalties and hardly any blocking assignment mess-ups which plagued them at Lambeau. Right guard is still an issue but Malone at left tackle played a much better game in Baton Rouge than he did in Wisconsin.

Now, the rest of the story. Dave Aranda’s defense wasn’t hitting on all cylinders in Green Bay and the freshness of it, along with several new starters or second-team fill-ins, showed the lack of familiarity with the system and put virtually no heat on Wisconsin’s rookie quarterback. The second game showed little progress. The defensive line will never be confused with Alabama’s and the flats still are prime yardage territory for a better than average quarterback and passing scheme.

Sophomore defensive end Arden Key added his third sack of the season and could not be stopped one-on-one when he was allowed to pass rush. And the secondary is still a work in progress, especially Donte’ Jackson. Too many times the backs got turned around after a catch and were embarrassed with yards after the catch produced by the Jacksonville State receivers. Especially on the one touchdown pass, which showed Donte’ Jackson, the alleged fastest football player in America, that track speed and receiver speed are not always the same as the 6 foot 5 inch JSU receiver ran away from Jackson, who must have had two helpings of egg on his face for his play.

He did, however, make an interception and took a kickoff 107 yards for a score, which was negated by a holding penalty.

Why try to help a guy who has a fascination with choking and mismanagement? The current Alabama saying goes like this “National Championships - It’s Too Easy!” Yes it is, Tide fans. Because the only consistently talented team on your level is LSU and Les Miles has the Tigers by the Tale - the tale of Bo Schembechler and The Running, Pounding Boys in Blue and Maize. But even that story is getting shopworn. Each day, thank your lucky Tide stars that for once in his career, Nick Saban was as pigheaded as Les Miles by wanting to run a professional football team. But the little guy learned - and how! Now he’s a god and his replacement is a god, only spelled backwards. But even an old dog should be able to learn new tricks. A Les Miles doggy show can’t learn new tricks and is beyond boring with the old ones. “Oh, you’ll miss him if he leaves” is the cry from those who will settle for two-thirds of a winning season in order to avoid complete domination that Alabama and others once rained on LSU. But the reign of Miles is worse, because common sense, fire and passion never enter the coaching mindset. And so the Tigers have to listen to the ‘Bama mantra year after year until a handful of seriously passionate players find their way onto the field for the Tigers and they win a close one every so often against Alabama. Screw that.

The early 2000’s showed that Alabama put on their pants one leg at a time like the rest of us and if Saban had LSU’s roster, LSU would dominate the Tide instead of the other ‘way round.
