Pearl River Alderman Interviews New Principals This issue - Mrs. Patti Holden of Riverside Elementary By: Lora Cutrer

Speaking of Change... Many of you have noticed we have a new principal at Riverside Elementary this school year. While she is new to the role as principal, she is definitely not new to most of us . Mrs. Patti Holden has been a lifelong resident here in Peal River. Her Mother, Janice McQueen, served as the first female Mayor of our town in the 1980’s. Principal Patti Holden has been married for 36 years, has 3 adult children and 8 grandchildren. Patti’s Pearl River pride is evident to all who meet her.

As I sat talking with Patti, she told me how she started in the school system as a parent volunteer and substitute teacher when her children were in school. She later became a para, then vice principal, and now principal, giving her 22 years of serving in education, and all at Riverside Elementary. Patti shared that she believes many of her leadership skills were also developed through church ministry’s she has been involved in throughout the years, and she gives all glory to God. Principal Holden said that her predecessor, Mary Lou Jordan, has left a solid foundation for their school to build upon. In her new role as principal, she hopes others will see fairness in her. She spoke of one of the things she loves about Pearl River saying, “We may be a small town, but when your back is against the wall, you know that the people of Pearl River have your back.” Principal Holden said one main focus this school year will be “Building Relationships.” “A child does not care about what you teach them unless they first know how much you care about them.”

I also had an opportunity to sit with Principal John Priola, the brand new principal of Pearl River High. While he is not originally from Pearl River, he is quickly discovering why we love this town so much. He expressed to me how very impressed he has been with the faculty involvement at PRHS, “Our staff may be small compared to other High Schools, but most of our teachers are very involved in extra curricular activities.” He said this shows him that they are in it for the right reasons - getting to know every student. Principal Priola has served a total of 34 years in education.

He served as a coach/athletic director for 17 years, as assistant principal for 2 years, and most recently, as principal at Boyet Jr. High for the last 3 years. Most of his experience has been working at the high school level. One of his main goals for Pearl River High School is to make sure the students have the best opportunities for their future. He would like to find out what inspires the students at PRHS, help them discover their strengths, and encourage them to pursue their passions in life. He would like to offer more programs to help them grow and get involved. Pearl River High has great school spirit already, and he would like to encourage every student to find where they belong here at the high school. Principal Priola is very eager to get to know the great people of Pearl River, so if you are passing by the school or attending a sporting event, look for our new principal and please make sure to give him a warm welcome to our beautiful town.

Something both Principal Holden and Principal Priola told me in their interviews is that they believe Pearl River is a Gem! I would have to agree!

HOLY MACKEREL, FRESH FRIED SEAFOOD BASKETS AND THE TIGER suddenly becomes fresh and fun in TOT TOWER! Food tiger stadium For years, Tiger Stadium food has been as boring as a Les Miles offensive game plan. Even the first year offerings in the Stadium Club weren’t much better than a last-minute tailgating party, with the promised Stax and gumbo dishes nowhere to be found. And the new, exotic selections promised for the rest of the stadium folks hardly materialized in 2017.

NOT THIS YEAR! Using the expanded walkways inside the west side of Tiger Stadium, the majority of fans will be able to consume freshly deep fried seafood, vegan options, Firehouse subs and brownies, Spiral Pizza, Big Squeezy juices, fresh acai bowls (think: tangy, tart smoothies in a bowl) and get free refills at strategically placed refill stations for their drinks.

Then there’s the new Tiger Tot Tower - a cardiac challenger of tater tots covered with barbecue pork, hot cheddar cheese and green onions.

Not to be outdone, the acai bowls will be part of an airport-inspired “grab and go” Kitch Concept with those vegan offerings, squeezable drinks and other, healthy and semi-healthy dishes. Long concession lines will be reduced as New Age nourishment thinking washes over Tiger Stadium. Who’da thunk it?

Added to the tradiitonal favorites this year is a foot-long Coney Corndogs (a must for the Ole Miss game) and Bayou Poppers made with fresh Kettle Corn. Note, too, the “Swamp” sausage dog, a traditional Manda sausage po-boy covered in peppers and onions. Dessert? The Beignet Box will be located outside across from Gate 22, with coffee and seating and beignets will also be sold inside the stadium But the real winner may be the Chute, a south stadium hangout for adult Tiger fans with a game ticket where for $20, you get two beers and access to Burgersmith items, such as their SmithBurger, alligator sausage po’boys and fried okra. Well, two out of three ain’t bad. The Chute will feature a giant screen HD video board and lots of HD t.v.’s to watch the game. But remember -it’s the Chute. Not Shoot the Coach. Named after the tunnel through which football teams run from the locker room to the field.

With alcohol in the lower South, upper South Skyline Club and in the numerous private suites and reserved areas, Tiger Stadium good times will offer a post-tailgate refresher or two for more fans than ever. Now, if the regular concession people can prepare enough coffee and cocoa during cold games, we may even forego the pregame and postgame restaurant trips.

MIAMI’S HURRICANES MORE OF A TROPICAL STORM LIKE GORDON It was a dream weekend: staying at my best friend’s house in Richardson and attending my third LSU football game at Jerry’s World, the AT&T starship stadium located in the intolerant city of Arlington. LSU played Oregon and TCU in 2011 and 2013, respectively, winning both games in the second half with superior talent but with lesser coaching acumen than was found across the field with Chip Kelly and Gary Patterson. This time, the Tigers dominated a grossly overrated Miami Hurricane team, most of whose starters are top 20 quality but whose team lacked the depth at any position but receiver. .

It was pure pleasure to travel to Arlington, whose traffic police were nowhere to be found, much to the relief of us who are used to professional game day police work. Won’t find that in Arlington. But when you get the chance to work the game from the press box and park a few hundred yards from the gate, well, life can be sweet. PERSIMMONS Although some have never tried the wonderful fruit we call a persimmon I’m sure they have at least seen this peculiar tree with its display of appropriately-timed, orange colored fruit. Female persimmon trees (both native and non-native) should be producing fruit this time of year.

Fruit will remain on the tree and ripen even as the leaves drop in the fall. In fact, it makes them very easy to identify this time of year. The native persimmon, Diospyros virginiana, is a small fruit tree native to the Eastern United States. They reach average heights around 15 feet tall.

Will Afton Outdoor enthusiasts love native persimmons because they attract wildlife of all sizes from song birds to turkey and whitetail deer. The Japanese persimmon, Diospyros kaki, is obviously a different species but it produces the same fruit we all know and love, except larger and sweeter. Because of this fact, the Japanese persimmon has been bred more extensively, giving the grower more variety to choose from.

Persimmons are tough, tolerant trees that are fairly easy to care for hence why you often see them being recommended for novice home growers. Generally with most all plantings I do recommend a soil test to determine whether or not we need to mix in any soil amendments before planting.

As with all fruit trees, you need full sun in order to produce a plentiful crop. You can get by with 6-8 hours but look for an area that receives at least 10 hours of full direct sunlight. Persimmons are dep rooted therefor display excellent drought resistance so access to irrigation water is not an immediate concern. Plant trees at least 20 feet away from the southern side of larger structures and buildings. For a grouping of trees, plant each one 15 feet from the other so that they will have the appropriate room to grow and develop. As for particular varieties, you will come across two different groups of persimmons: astringent and non-astringent. Astringent persimmons will need to remain on the tree until they are fully ripe and soft to touch before they can be eaten fresh.

‘Taninashi’ and ‘Hachiya’ are two recommended varieties to choose from. Non-astringent varieties do not have to be fully ripe when picked. They make a nice backyard project because they can be eaten firm like an apple or you can wait for them to fully ripen like the astringent varieties.

‘Tamopan’, ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Suruga’ are excellent non-astringent cultivars to choose from.

FALL BLOOMING WILDFLOWERS

Whether you are driving down the highway, walking down a nature trail, or just enjoying some family time in the backyard, the beauty of Mother Nature can be found all around us. The spring and fall seasons provide us with a multitude of blooming flowers and fruiting bushes that can light up the natural landscape. The most common plants seen blooming this season are golden rods (Solidago spp.). The plants are tall and slender, reaching heights between five and eight feet tall. Their golden yellow terminal flower spikes easily identify them. Yellow is one of the main colors of our fall blooming wildflowers because another common flower seen is the swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolia). It also is a larger growing type that will get about six feet tall.

Switching things up is wild ageratum or blue mist flower (Conoclinium coelestinum). A smaller plant that grows up to three feet tall that produces small bunches of tiny blooms that are blue in color. Growing even smaller are several varieties of aster (Aster spp.) that produce white, lavender, or pink daisy like flowers. Sometimes it’s not the flowers of a plant that provide us with color. The American beauty berry (Calicarpa americana) is known for producing reddish purple berry along its stems this time of year. Another good berry producer is hollies. Female plants of yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) and american holly (Ilex opaca) produce red berries during the fall and winter. This is just scratching the surface because I could list a lot more. Now back to reality. Friends offered me a hybrid beer Saturday called Liger…a combination of Lion for Southeastern, LSU’s opponent, and the LSU Tiger. It tasted like citrus orange. The real LSU Tigers tasted much worse. Like nothing really has changed on the field: the same inability to exploit the flats offensively and defensively, same ability to play down to the so-called level of their opponents and the same excuses for less than an SEC performance. Who cares? When two Southeastern quarterbacks outperform your starting quarterback, when a Southeastern linebacker from Nova Scotia upstages every defender on the LSU squad, when your defense gives up 90% first downs from the other teams 4th down efforts, you really need to hang your heads and have Sunday drills, like old school coaching. LSU is now 2 and 0 but most likely will be an ugly 2 and 1 this time next week against a better than decent Auburn team. First things first. Quit the suspensions, stupid Tiger players, and get with the program. Second, learn to anticipate on defense. The turf or LSU cleats might have been a problem in Arlington but no such excuse was on display in Baton Rouge for the season opener with all the missed stops and tackles against Southeastern. Third, institute an alternative 4-3 to the 3-4 because teams like Mississippi State, Georgia and Alabama will eat up the Tigers’ lack of thick inside defenders.

Fourth, get Glenn Logan off the edge. This kid is slower than slow with a motor that doesn’t rev more than 500 rpm.

That’s the defense.We’ll talk further about the defensive strengths of the Tigers as the season progresses and why the losses of Tyler Taylor and K’Lavon Chaisson won’t be as devastating as the loss of Arden Key was last year. Taylor is gone, the so-called thinking linebacker who apparently didn’t think during a stint as an accused getaway driver in Georgia this year and Chaisson is out with a torn ACL. But think of Jacob Phillips, Patrick Queen, Michael Divinity, Ray Thornton, and Devin White - all proven ‘backers with a year’s mentoring under David Aranda and the transfers, redshirts and true freshmen who have come in to bolster a usually thin and limited impact position for LSU. This still could be the best linebacking corps ever at LSU and it should lead the Tigers in every game this year.

WICHITA TAKES THE CAKES Promises of a new $80 million dollar stadium and, ostensibly, not to hurl when hearing the team’s mascot’s name, Wichita, Kansas, has taken the Baby Cakes away from their adoring fan base in New Orleans. In 2020 or perhaps two years later, or whenever, this well-ignored Triple A baseball franchise will begin to terrorize Midwesterners as they replace the Wichita Wingnuts as that aeronautics city’s baseball team of choice.

Perhaps they could combine the names, becoming the Wichita Nutty Cakes or even the Wichita Baby Wings, reflecting that city’s desperation in picking up a franchise that drove away about a third of their New Orleans fan base while selling Baby Cake merchandise to the silly and the gullible like it was……well, hot cakes. Nothing hot about these Cakes, whose mascot either 1) Looked like a late middle-aged Chucky or 2) Resembled a demonic old man, which, come to think of it, would be Chucky at 65.

So the Chuckys have been chucked, preparing room for a DOUBLE A powerhouse to fill the Shine on Airline, one of the best minor league ballparks in America. Minor league baseball is just that; a throwback to the pre-sports network days of starvation pay scales and goofy, family-friendly fun between innings. Wichita is a great basketball town and the setting for one of Glenn Campbell’s greatest hits, Wichita Lineman, but we really don’t know much about their appetite for baseball. If they can stomach the Cakes, they will be receiving their just desserts.
