Those are all SEC western division teams, two of them with multi national football crowns as well. The point is that none of those three (and the Gators as well) made the Super Regionals in baseball this year. But three of the other four in the division….Texas A&M, Arkansas and Mississippi…..are in the College World Series and if form holds true, Auburn, the other West team, will join them if they defeat the Oregon State Pervert Beavers in State’s home park after the deadline of this publication on Monday night.

Regardless, it is CWS history that four teams from one college baseball conference has made the tournament. It’s happened before but if the Auburn Tigers win, it will be four teams from the same division, which has never ever happened and probably won’t happen again. And that’s without the Tennessee Volunteers, a baseball team so talented this year that a plurality of experts were calling them the best college baseball team of all time. The Vols, though, had their luck replaced by the Luck ‘O the Irish and Notre Dame found a way to convincingly beat Tennessee twice on their own field. No Rally in the Valley this past weekend as another “legend” team will never have the chance to secure their legacy against the best teams of 2022. The Vols nickname stood for Volatile in two of the three contests in Knoxville as errors and ineffective relief pitching led to much of their undoing. Sounds like they channeled the LSU Tigers for those qualities.

Well, the collegiate athletic season is almost officially in the books for 2021-2022. All we have left are the 8 teams headed to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. The state of Mississippi was guaranteed a team when Ole Miss came out of the Miami Regional and USM came back to beat LSU in the Hattiesburg Regional. Despite a year of rebuilding with a new coach, LSU’s baseball season finale loss to the Eagles came as a surprise to the head coach.

“My feet hit the ground every day with excitement to coach this team,” said LSU head coach Jay Johnson after the 8-7 season-ending loss to Southern Mississippi. “I was not prepared to lose the game. I was fully convinced that we would win, so I need to gather my thoughts.”

The Tigers finished fourth in the Southeast Conference with an overall record of 37-18 and 17-13 in the conference to earn a first-round bye in the SEC tournament for the first time since 2017. LSU was at the top of the conference in many offensive statistics, finishing first in the SEC with 124 hits and second in hit percentage (0.516), base percentage (0.404), and runs scored (496).

LSU will not return Berry or Doughty, as both are slated to go early in the MLB draft from July 17-19. Crews is ineligible for the draft, which means he will be back for a third season at LSU. Jobert, a draft-eligible red freshman, could return, while grad student McManus used his final year of eligibility.

Given Johnson’s reputation as a batting aficionado, it’s no surprise that the Tigers also finished in the Top 5 in other offensive categories, including third place in home runs (112), hits (605), total bases (1083) and doubles (120); At the. 4 in batting average (0.289); and No. 5 in triples (11). Five players finished with double-digit home runs: Dylan Crews (22), Brayden Jobert (18), Jacob Berry (15), Cade Doughty (15) and Tyler McManus (10).

Going into the regional, LSU had an ERA of 4.09, which was the fourth best in the SEC. It went up at the end of the season to 4.31, which was No. 5 in the SEC with an opposing batting average of .238 (No. 4 in the SEC).

These numbers were published without a consistent initial rotation: LSU had a weekend starter in fifth-year veteran Ma’Khail Hilliard, but the rest never panned out. Blake Money started the season as a starter on Friday night and moved to Saturdays in time to play in the SEC. This was done despite my warning that in no way was he a weekend SEC starter.

Sophomore Ty Floyd started first and second in the weekend rotation at the start of the season, even appearing against No. 1 Texas at the Shriners Classic on March 5. he dropped out of the bullpen in midweek games before winning as a starter against Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Southern Miss.

Rookie Sam Dutton was the third weekend starter in nine of 10 regular season series against SEC opponents, and again in the second game against Southern Miss at the regional, but he never worked more than 4 2/3 times during a game.

Not having a starting rotation that could eat starters was the Tigers’ Achilles heel.

But all that could change post-draft, which is why the transfer portal will be a key factor in Johnson’s ability to fill the roster. Upon arriving in Baton Rouge last season, Johnson brought in Bryce Collins, Berry, Cooper, Reyzelman, Gervase, McManus and Shaffer.

One of those voids will be in the capture position, left by McManus, who replaced Alex Milazzo.

Milazzo never fully recovered from a knee injury following the March 5 game against Texas, but he will be back next season. Redshirt’s second year Hayden Travinski has appeared in 33 games and could return. There are currently two catchers in the recruiting class of 2022.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Search and Rescue Crews Find Body of Missing Boater in Mississippi River

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division along with other search and rescue crews recovered the body of a missing boater in the Mississippi River in Iberville Parish on June 11.

The body of Howard Brown, 54, of Baton Rouge, was recovered around 10:30 a.m. on June 11 in the Mississippi River.

LDWF agents received a call around 5 p.m. on June 8 about a missing boater in the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge. LDWF agents along with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard immediately responded to the scene and searched for the missing boater.

LDWF will be the lead investigative agency for this boating incident. It is unknown at this time what caused Brown’s 16-foot-vessel to sink.

Have you had enough of the rain yet? I certainly have! At the rate it is going I will have to cut my grass twice a week. Keep in mind I have a push lawn mower.On the bright side, I may lose a couple pounds. I am usually out there cutting grass at 7:30 on Saturday mornings. Good thing I have understanding neighbors. They probably think”there goes that crazy old lady again”. And it’s only the beginning of June! It is gonna be one long hot summer.

Get ready for the ride! Make sure you have all the crafting supplies you need so you won’t have to go out in the heat to get them.

Father’s Day is just around the corner. The perfect time to get the children involved in crafting fun, and a good way to keep them busy while you are doing your thing. I no longer have little ones of my own but I do have quite a few great great nieces. My way of keeping them busy is giving them a round paper mache box, a paint brush or two, and their choice of paints. I told them they could paint them any color they wanted. I then showed the older one (7) how to dry brush the sides and top of the box and how to add the stars with a stencil. We added the lettering with a chalk pencil, which easily erases after the paint dries. Added some dip dots and we were finished. They were busy for about 2 hours and had lots of fun. As you can see, whoever sits in my painting chair had the same critic I do. And he can be very nosey and at times tries to take the paint brush away from you. We had a lot of fun playing and creating. Now they have a special gift for their Dads that was made with lots of love.

Well, that’s “our” project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Words to GREAUX by GARDENIA, THAT FRAGRANT SOUTHERN FAVORITE. Gardenias are some of the most popular flowering plants found in Southern landscapes. Like azaleas, gardenias are evergreen shrubs that bloom in the spring, albeit a little later in the season. They are members of the Rubiaceae family along with coffee, pentas, and ixora. Although Will Afton native to sub-tropical regions, gardenias are cold hardy. Most will tolerate temperatures near 0°F. Second to their sweet-smelling blooms, heat tolerance is what really helps them excel in the Deep South environment. Gardenia foliage can be quite exquisite. The dark green glossy leaves provide a beautiful backdrop throughout the growing season.

Site selection, like with most plants, is important when planning to add gardenias into the home landscape. Although they can tolerate full sun, locations with morning sun and filtered after noon light are ideal. The soil should be moist with moderate drainage. The optimum soil pH range for gardenias is between 5.5 and 6.0. Have the soil tested to determine the current pH and adjust with lime or sulfur if found to be out of range. Amend the soil by incorporating 3-4 inches of organic matter (homemade compost, composted manures, etc.) at planting. Follow recommended planting instructions by digging a hole slightly shallower than and 2-3 times as wide as the root ball. Slightly pack excavated soil around the plant and water in to collapse any voids. Finish the planting by adding a 2-3-inch layer of organic mulch (pine straw, pine bark, cypress, etc.).

Another reason why gardenias are popular landscape plants is because of the variation within cultivars available at the nursery. There seems to be a gardenia that fits in any space you have to offer. The lowest growing selection is ‘Radicans’ and is commonly known as dwarf gardenia.

It grows about 2-3ft tall and 3-4ft wide, giving it a spreading-like growth habit. ‘Daisy’ has a bushier growth habit and reaches 2-4ft tall and wide. It produces a single flower while as most other varieties produce double flowers. ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia is a medium sized shrub with a more upright growth habit and fine foliage texture, averaging 4-5ft tall and 3-4ft wide. It is well known to Louisiana gardeners because it was promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant in 2011.

‘August Beauty’ is one of the larger growing cultivars. It reaches 6-7ft tall and 5-6ft wide. It produces large double flowers almost 3 inches in diameter. All the cultivars listed produce the typical white flowers and sweet fragrance.

Like most other plants, gardenias have a few common pests. Whiteflies and scales feed on the foliage of the plant. They produce honey dew which falls on lower leaves and provides a substrate for black sooty mold to grow on. Treat with a horticultural spray to keep under control.

Follow the label for mixing instructions and application frequency. More than one application of spray will be required to control both scales and whiteflies. Flower thrips are another pest of gardenia. The small insect (1/20th inch) feed on developing flower buds that cause the flowers to brown quickly soon after opening. They are hard to manage because they live inside the flower bud. The most effective strategy is to use a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid. Like with all pest problems, keep plants healthy and they will be able prevent most infestations.

Follow plant spacing recommendations, supplement irrigation, and provide adequate fertility to encourage optimum growing conditions.

BAD WEATHER TIPS When bad weather strikes, we want to prepare our pets for the loud sounds and sights that accompany a severe storm. When a storm hits, it can be a stressful and overwhelming time for our pets who don’t understand where the loud sounds and sudden flashes of light are coming from. Keeping our pets feeling calm and secure during severe weather is key to ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

Before a storm ever hits, we want to make sure our pets have some form of identification, whether that’s a microchip or a visible ID tag. Some severe storms can destroy or knock down fences, and the scary sounds and sights of a storm can cause pets to run away. Having your pet microchipped or wearing visible identification can reunite you with your lost pet after a severe storm.

If your pet is anxious during a storm, we recommend closing all blinds and curtains to muffle the noise and reduce lightning flashes.

If your pet is still showing signs that they are anxious, you can try engaging them in an activity that distracts them from the sounds of the storm. If this doesn’t work, make sure your pet has access to a place they feel safe, such as a kennel or under your bed, and play calming music to drown out the loud noises. Providing them with a stimulating toy or treat, such as a Kong with peanut butter, in their safe space can also help distract them.

After a major storm, be sure to check the yard before allowing your pet outside. There could be downed powerlines, gaps in fences, or dangerous debris in your yard. If your dog has extreme anxiety during severe weather, talk to your vet and/or certified trainer to see if there are other measures that you can take to reduce your pet’s anxiety during storms.
