Local Elders Corner Elder’s Corner – August 2011

Warm summertime greetings to all friends and family of the North Valley Seventh-Day Adventist Church! The story is told of a Christian businessman who was late for a job interview with a prestigious company in a busy metropolitan area. While frantically driving around looking for an empty parking space he became increasingly agitated. After 30 minutes of fruitless searching he finally resorted to a short, desperate prayer. “Lord, if you would PLEASE just help me find an empty parking space I promise to start reading my Bible and praying every day!” Miraculously, at that very moment, an empty parking space appeared just ahead of the man’s car! The businessman then blurted out, “Never mind, God, I found one myself.” How often is it that we only remember God when we are in distress? As long as everything in life is going as we expect it to, we tend to somehow forget God’s presence all around us. We forget His immeasurable love for us. We forget that He created us and gave us life with His breath. We forget His immortal Son dying the death that we deserve. We forget that our lives do not belong to us! Day after day we go on living for ourselves, doing what we want or what we have chosen to do. We wake up in the morning, too tired to have morning devotionals. We go to work or school without any thought of the One who gave us the ability to learn and work. We communicate with people all around us and never once talk about Christ. We come home and fix supper, not appreciating the food that God has provided for us to eat. We start eating and after a few bites realize we forgot to say a blessing for the food. In the evening we turn on the TV or do something for ourselves because after all we just spent all day at work and now we “deserve some time just for ourselves”. We end up going to bed later than we planned and as we lay down we try to say a prayer but our minds wander and we end up falling asleep halfway through. Do any of the previous scenarios sound familiar or is it just me? I am reminded of a verse that has been studied many times in recent sermons and in Sabbath school discussions this quarter on worship. Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” I know that my life tends to follow the “pattern of this world” more often than the pattern of heaven. Yet God’s mercies are new every morning and He wants to transform us into citizens of heaven through the renewing of our minds. This renewal is simply the constant presence of God in our minds and the reward is eternal life with our Creator (see Philippians 3:19-21 and Colossians 3:1-10). There is a bumper sticker that reads “God is my copilot”. I used to think that this was a catchy phrase until I saw a good friend of mine wear a T-shirt that read “If God is your copilot, you need to switch seats!” Do you invite God into your mind every day? And just as importantly, do you keep Him in your mind throughout the day? Does He guide your thoughts and actions or have you given Him a back seat in your life? May Jesus live in you every day and may you shine—all the time!

NORTH VALLEY SDA

Pastoral Search Update – August 2011

The search for the next pastor of the North Valley Seventh-Day Adventist Church continues… On July 25th our church board, and members of our sister church, the Christiansburg SDA Church, met with Pastor Bob Banks, the ministerial director for the Potomac Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists. Many topics were discussed at this meeting including the conference’s role in finding a new pastor, strengths and weaknesses found in our local church, characteristics that would be beneficial in our next pastor, and where we stand in the pastoral search process. The next step in the pastoral search will be performed by the Potomac Conference. During the middle of August the Executive Personnel Committee of the Potomac Conference will meet and with God’s guidance and our input decide upon a short list of approved candidates for our church. This list will then be brought back to our church board, and the Christiansburg church board, for discussion and the prioritization of names. Our top choice will then be invited to come to our church for a face-to-face interview with our church board before any final decisions are made. Please keep this pastoral search in your prayers. May we seek God’s will in every step of this process and may God lead our next pastor to us in His perfect time.
