June kicks off FREE Music in the Parks programs in Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks Thanks to the funding by Portland General Electric and Morrow County Unified Recreation District and sponsored by North Morrow Community Foundation, we can once again enjoy free entertainment each Monday evening from June 15th through August 17th at the Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks.

Bring your comfy lawn chair or blanket to sit on while you tap your foot to the variety of music that will be provided free to everyone this summer. Each concert begins at 7:00 pm, so be sure you have your spot saved before they begin!

The concerts begin June 15th at Boardman Marina Park, 7:00 pm with Zac Grooms and

Paulette Dufloth, who are a country music team that will give you a highly interactive, entertaining and even educational show. With several decades of combined experience in the live music and recording industry, Zac and Paulette can recall hundreds of songs at will as well as occasionally learn a song on the spot for a lucky listener.

A unique blend of instrumental ability and styles, this duo is able to cover an extremely vast array of music eras and even genres. Paulette originally hales from Prince Edward Island, Canada and grew up playing fiddle, piano and acoustic guitar. She has toured extensively around Canada, the US

After cooking up a storm at Boardman Senior Center from 2008 to 2022, then moving to cooking for our kids at Windy River and Sam Boardman Elementary Schools from 2022 through 2025, Marge Kllinger has returned to the Senior Center recently to again please her many fans!

The Senior Center is known for good eats every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch time (Noon to about 12:30) at a super price of $6.00 for those under age 55 and $5.00 for seniors; Veterans always eat free!

Marge and her husband, Gary moved to the Boardman area in 2008, after living in the Dallas, Oregon area for 27 years. Gary worked in construction, and Marge retired from 18 years at Jefferson Manor, a semi-skilled assisted living facility. She had several jobs while there, starting as a medical aide, then housekeeping and finally head cook for about five years.

The Klingers had lived on a ranch near Wasco, Oregon for five years, and liked the wide open spaces and freedoms that eastern Oregon has for residents, so the transition moving to the Boardman area was easy for them.

The Klingers have known each other since they were nine years old; they’ve been married

since 1959. They raised two kids, Glenda Bahler, who now lives near Boardman, and Gary, Junior, who lives with his family in the Dallas area. They share four grandkids (Nathan and Jennifer from son Gary, Junior and Mindy and Brad from daughter Glenda) and three great grandkids. Their family menagerie has included lots of horses, a goat, and many dogs. For years (since 1964) they raised race horses and followed the Washington and Oregon racing circuit at Kennewick, Walla, Waitsburg, Dayton, Portland, Union, Grants Pass, Prineville and Tillamook. If you heard a lady yelling “Come on Hannibal Lector!!!” it was probably Marge rooting for one of their top horses to win the race.

This spring has brought the Klingers a new filly (“It’s really my daughter’s horse”) and now a calf (heifer). Although the racing circuit has changed significantly and they no longer follow it, they still like to raise those fast horses, and the calf is being raised for their future table.

Their home place of 10 acres allows Gary to raise enough alfalfa for horse hay, and he sells enough to put a jingle in his pocket, too!

Gary was a Senior Citizen Board of Director for several years, and they both have been

instrumental in bringing catering and diners to the Center.

Gary also volunteered as the maintenance person at the Center for several years.

Marge is known for her wide variety of entrees that she puts forth. “People are looking for MEAT,” she opines, so every meal features a healthy serving of protein. Every meal also includes salad (she must know a hundred types!), vegetables, (“Gotta have something healthy!” rolls and of course her famous desserts! One of Marge’s first requests upon her return was for her special bread pudding. She loves making desserts, so be prepared for a wide variety of cakes, pies, etc.

If you can’t get away to attend the Tuesday and Thursday lunches at the Senior Center, many people call ahead and pick up a “to-go” lunch. The cook and volunteers fill to-go cartons and have everything bagged with your name on it for your convenience. The Center probably prepares as many togo lunches as those who eat at the Center. Call 481-3257 and provide your name and how many meals you want prepared to-go and they’ll be ready for your pick up -- usually between 11:30 and 12:30.

Community Color Run for Mental Health! Music in the Parks feaBOARDMAN, OR - The community came together in a colorful and meaningful way on Saturday, May 16th, for the 2026 Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Color Run at Boardman Marina Park. While this was the second annual color run hosted at the Marina Park, it was the first year that Community Counseling Solutions, Columbia River Health, and Boardman Park and Recreation District teamed together to support mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and community connection.

The event welcomed 150 participants who joined the fun despite the blustery weather! This far exceeded our expectations in the best way and we can’t wait to see the event grow in coming years. Throughout the morning, Boardman Marina Park was filled with smiling faces, laughter, and vibrant clouds of color as participants of all ages walked and ran together in the event t-shirts that were included in the reg-

istration. Families, friends old and new, coworkers, and neighbors joined side-by-side for a few short hours to set aside life’s burdens and make the day a little brighter.

In addition to the color run, community members had the opportunity to connect with several incredible resource vendors who shared information and support services focused on mental health and suicide prevention. Vendors included Embodhi Yoga

Community Women’s Club awards scholarships Irrigon and Riverside students receive grants For over 30 years, Community Women of Irrigon and Boardman have awarded scholarships to graduating seniors at both Irrigon High in Irrigon and Riverside in Boardman. These scholarships have an emphasis on community service and volunteerism. We are proud to announce the 2026 recipients.

Kaylee Christy from Riverside will be attending Western Oregon University and major in Forensic Psychology. Kaylee receives $1,000.00. Maddyn Morton also from Riverside plans to attend either OIT or PPC majoring in dental hygiene. Her scholarship is $750.00. Adalia Chavez graduating from Riverside will attend OSU majoring in Business/Marketing. She receives a $750.00 scholarship from Community

Graduating from Irrigon High, Maria Mendoza will attend BMCC and receive a $1,000.00 scholarship. Maria will major in nursing. Graduate Guadalupe Trujillo Ramirez will attend OSU and study biology with an emphasis to enter the Veterinarian School. She will receive a $750.00 scholarship.

First-in-the-Northwest BMCC training program prepares students for data center careers On Tuesday, 20 students graduated from the Amazon Web Services Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship (I2PA) program at the Blue Mountain Community College Workforce Training Center.

(I2PS is sponsored by AWS. The students spent four weeks getting their hands dirty and learning skills many had never tried before, including framing walls, pulling wire, and soldering pipes.

I2PA is a paid training program that introduces students to the careers that build, connect, power, and operate data center infrastructure. It’s been held all over the country, including Georgia, Ohio, and Mississippi, but this is the first time it’s come to the Northwest.

“We’re seeing a large demand for people with technical skills, and programs like this give students a chance to be part of that growth,” said Anne Morter, Workforce Training Center Director at BMCC. “These students are enthusiastic and engaged. A lot of them are fairly young and saw this as a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of skilled trades, and they get paid for it.”

Morter has been at BMCC for 33 years and has seen the demand for technical training grow steadily as industries in

the region have expanded.

The program covers fiber optics, electrical, mechanical, computer servers, and necessary software. It focuses on the business of being a great employee like problem solving, time management, teamwork, persistence, and respect for others. Students walk away with several certificates, including AWS I2PA and OSHA 10, and get the chance to participate in a job fair featuring hiring managers from companies looking for workers with these skills.

About 90 people applied for this round. Twenty were selected.

Area experts have come in throughout the program to teach construction, plumbing, wiring, and more in the Industrial Systems Technology lab at the training center. Morter said the networking opportunity alone has been huge for students.

“The people that come in are great teachers. They roll with it,” she said. “I walked in the other day and one of the subject matter experts was at the board, and it was covered with writing and arrows going all over the place, and he’s explaining everything.”

hammer before. By the end, some were walking away thinking, “I’m pretty good at this. I can do this.”

Mike Berman, Director of Economic and Workforce Development, said the opportunities extend well beyond Amazon itself. “This program isn’t just about filling Amazon roles. The majority of high-demand jobs in this industry are with the electricians, fiber technicians, construction crews, and local businesses that build and maintain this infrastructure. We want these students to be ready for all of it.”

Morter said she’s already had calls from people asking how to sign up for future programs. And for anyone who thinks they might not know enough to give it a shot? Her advice is simple. “You might find out you have an aptitude for something you never would’ve discovered otherwise.”

RHS sophomore receives invitation to Women’s National Showcase, Florida Suzannah McCord, a sophomore at Riverside Jr./ Sr. High School, has received a prestigious invitation to the Women’s National Showcase for women’s college soccer, to be held in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the end of June. The invitation recognized her athleticism, sportsmanship, and coachability. Upon receiving the news from her Hermiston FC coach, Suzi was floored, and Mr. Ashby even excused her from class so she could share the exciting update with RHS Girls’ Soccer Coach, Eddy Ramos.

Suzi has been a force to be reckoned with on the field since age five, beginning with AYSO in her hometown of Winnemucca, Nevada.

Umatilla Electric Cooperative receives 2026 Customer Satisfaction Award for fourth consecutive year

HERMISTON, OR – For the fourth consecutive year, Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) has been recognized with the 2026 Customer Satisfaction Award from American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI®) for Co-op Energy Utilities.

The award is presented to qualifying Touchstone Energy® cooperatives that achieve an ACSI score ranking within the top 25th percentile as publicly measured in the 2026 ACSI Annual Energy Utility Study.

“Listening to our members is an important part of how we serve our communities,” said Weston Putman, manager of public relations. “Moving to quarterly surveys gives us more opportunities to hear directly from members and make informed improvements across the cooperative.”

Over the years, the cooperative has conducted member satisfaction surveys on a biannual and annual basis and has now expanded those efforts to quarterly surveying to better identify and respond to evolving member needs.

Cooperative members are randomly selected to participate in the surveys and are asked to evaluate their overall satisfaction with UEC, how well the cooperative meets their expectations, and how

closely the experience aligns with their ideal utility provider.

These measurements are core components of the proprietary ACSI methodology, recognized as the nation’s only cross-industry measure of customer satisfaction.

By increasing survey frequency to a quarterly model, UEC can gather more timely feedback and better target specific priorities identified by its membership.

“Our members are at the center of every decision we make,” said Josh Lankford, UEC’s executive vice president/ COO. “The ability to hear directly from them more frequently helps us strengthen programs, improve communication, and continue delivering responsive service.”

This achievement is an example of the cooperative difference and aligns closely with the national Cooperative Principle #7: Concern for Community.

BMCC announces summer hours, services, and training opportunities Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) will begin its summer operating schedule on June 15. Summer hours will be Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with all locations closed on Fridays.

BMCC will also observe the following summer holidays: · June 18 — Juneteenth · July 2 — Independence Day All BMCC locations will be closed on those dates.

Throughout the summer, BMCC will continue offering a variety of student support services at the center, including test proctoring and placement testing, academic advising, and FAFSA assistance.
