A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR (Read about Pastor Joel at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Stay informed about his involvement with current events at pastorjoelhunter.com.)

“Laws of Liberty” So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

Worship focus

Worship Christ today for His freedom. Scripture tells us that we can know the truth, and the truth will set us free (John 8:32). The Truth that leads to freedom is a person – the person of Jesus Christ. He sets us free from the power of sin and death in our lives.

Devotional Thought James 2:12-13 (NASB)

DIG DEEPER

Be in Community:

Pastor and author Tim Keller describes the gospel this way: “We are more flawed and sinful than we ever dared believe, yet we are more loved and accepted than we ever dared hope at the same time.” He continues: “The gospel is, therefore, radically different from religion. Religion operates on the principle: ‘I obey, therefore I am accepted’. The gospel operates on the principle: ‘I am accepted through Christ, therefore I obey.’” James instructs us to “speak and act as those who are judged by the law of liberty”; in other words, to live in the reality of Christ’s radical acceptance. I am accepted through Christ, therefore I obey. When this truth penetrates our hearts, it transforms our actions, motivations, worldview, and sense of identity. Do you truly believe that you are accepted by God because of what Christ has done, or are you believing the lie “I obey, therefore I am accepted”? Do you find yourself paralyzed by shame over breaking the law, or elevated by pride for keeping it? Remember that you are more flawed, yet more loved, than you could ever imagine. Ask God to impress His law of liberty on your heart today, and every day.

Prayer Everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being: You have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness keep us from doing it; that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. – St. Augustine

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Making Someday, Today Can Take a Leap of Faith M

y name is Dave VerNooy, and I live in Oxford, Connecticut. Some of my friends thought I was a little crazy to go on a mission trip with a Florida church I had only physically attended once, and where I didn’t know anyone at all. But sometimes God may want us to take a leap of faith that not everyone around us understands. For me, this felt like one of those moments. My wife and I have been joining Northland online for about a year, and while I was in the middle of looking for a service project I could participate in, someone highlighted trips on the “Someday Is Today” website. The idea of going on a service trip with a Christian connection appealed to me, and the work rebuilding Camp ToknowHim in Alabama sounded perfect. I was a little worried about whether I would be accepted into the Northland group or feel like an outsider … but I decided to take the leap. Starting with my first email back from Bud Abt, saying I could go on the trip, I felt welcome like a longtime Northland member. My sore muscles have just about recovered, yet the work trip experience will live on for years. It was everything I had hoped for. Work at the camp was inspiring, and everyone on the trip extended warm Christian fellowship. Online worship from Connecticut will feel a little deeper and more personal as I remember the people from Florida whom I worked alongside. Time spent in Christian community, and doing work that will touch lives and potentially bring people closer to a path with God, is time well spent. I look forward to another “Someday Is Today” journey with Northland.

VOLUNTEER at Northland Sarah Mattingly Dishes About Food and Hospitality Roles BY JAMES LI

I

was just listening to a song written in 1950 by Eileen Barton called “If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’dve Baked a Cake.” It’s such a cheerful song, and it reminded me of growing up in a small church, enjoying the church potluck with some good ole home cooking. I remember each week checking the church bulletin to see if that was the week the church would host Sarah Mattingly the potluck, with the vast assortment of casseroles, dishes and desserts ... obviously including cakes. This month, I spoke with Northland staff member Sarah Mattingly, our events manager, in-house “food connoisseur” and resident in the Hub, about her roles at Northland. James: Sarah, How many years have you been at Northland, and what roles have you had over the years? Sarah: I’ve been on staff for 15 years and have had quite a few different roles. I started as the worship administrative assistant, and since then I’ve also been an assistant to Dr. Joel C. Hunter and Pastor Vernon Rainwater, as well as for Accounts Receivable, HR, Media Design and our Service (mission) department. I’m currently the events manager, one of the directors of our summer internship program, True North Academy, and also I assist in the Hub.

James Li is ready to sign you up. Sarah: We have a team of congregants who love to cook who make up our Sunday morning hospitality team. This team is responsible for the preparation and serving of breakfast for all of the volunteers and staff who work at Longwood on Sunday mornings. It’s a big undertaking, but they are a great team and really enjoy the opportunity to do what they love! The team rotates, so individuals typically only serve one Sunday a month. James: Almost every weekend, we can visit you in the Hub. What is the purpose of the Hub, and what kinds of things happen there? Sarah: The Hub is a place for conversation, information and connection. It’s kind of like Northland’s family room! Each weekend after worship, you can find Hub hosts, whose entire role is simply to connect with you! If you have questions about Northland or about something you heard in worship service, need prayer, are looking for opportunities to serve, are curious about what your next steps for involvement at Northland could be, or simply want to meet some new people, stop by the Hub! We’d love to see you there! James: Are there areas where the congregation can jump in to be involved with food and hospitality? Sarah: We are always looking for individuals who really enjoy cooking and serving in that manner for our Sunday morning team. If you’re interested, let me know; I’d love to connect with you and tell you more! Catch me at the Hub or drop me an email at sarah.mattingly@northlandchurch.net.

James: Among the many roles you have served and volunteered in, you currently have been coordinating food for the volunteer teams on Sunday mornings. Tell us a little about this.

Volunteer Opportunities! Sunday morning hospitality team: Are you a great cook? Love to share your talent with others? Join our hospitality team! This would be incredibly helpful and supplement the dishes we provide for our worship team and volunteers. Any dish is welcome, so share your secret recipes with us! Sarah Mattingly at sarah.mattingly@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7170 Welcome desk host: Be the friendly face people see when they come to Northland. Answer questions, or help folks find their way to classes or meetings. Immediate needs for Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Lori Holton at lori. holton@northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1762 Children’s Ministries hospitality team: If you love to bake, sign up to provide goodies for our volunteers who faithfully serve the children of our congregation every weekend and during special events. Michelle Filippelli at michelle. filippelli@northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1770 Buddy Break baker: Support our Buddies who faithfully serve the special needs children during Buddy Break by providing baked goods or your favorite dish one Saturday a month. Heather Subbert at heather.subbert@ northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1828 Tour guides: Help our big church feel small to visitors by showing them where things are located and sharing our wide range of programs and opportunities to connect. Rebecca Lang at rebecca.lang@northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1807 Foyer hosts: We are looking for volunteers who will intentionally roam the foyer before and after service to connect with congregants who may be new, elderly, or families with young children and/or with special needs. Ruth Sapp at ruth.sapp@northlandchurch.net or 407949-4039

Did you know … … we use more than 500 volunteers across all of our weekend services? We are thankful for the hands and hearts that support our congregation in connecting with God and others. Butch prepares fresh waffles.

Rhonda sets up the buffet.

HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church. For more videos on how to build a simple church, so that you can effectively gather with others to transform your community, visit www. doingchurchsimply.com.
