What’s Current

Continuing to explore the first chapter of James, Dr. Joel C. Hunter (Sunday morning) and Pastor Lon Garber (Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights) will teach on a spiritual dichotomy — the incredible power of humility. (Read about Pastor Joel and Pastor Lon at northlandchurch.net/team.)

“... the brother of humble circumstances ...”

Here’s a sampling of the many upcoming opportunities to respond to God:

EASTER AT NORTHLAND

James 1:9-11; 2:9 (NASB) But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Excerpted from Multiply, by Francis Chan

Living as a Disciple What Is a Disciple?

W

hat does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? As you will discover, the answer is fairly simple, but it changes your life completely.

The word disciple refers to a student or apprentice. Disciples in Jesus’s day would follow their rabbi (which means teacher) wherever he went, learning from the rabbi’s teaching and being trained to do as the rabbi did. Basically, a disciple is a follower, but only if we take the term follower literally. Becoming a disciple of Jesus is as simple as obeying His call to follow. When Jesus called His first disciples, they may not have understood where Jesus would take them or the impact it would have on their lives, but they knew what it meant to follow. They took Jesus’s call literally and began going everywhere He went and doing everything He did. It’s impossible to be a disciple or a follower of someone and not end up like that person. Jesus said, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). That’s the whole point of being a disciple of Jesus: We imitate Him, carry on His ministry, and become like Him in the process. Yet somehow many have come to believe that a person can be a “Christian” without being like Christ. A “follower” who doesn’t follow. How does that make any sense? Many people in the church have decided to take on the name of Christ and nothing else. This would be like Jesus walking up to those first disciples and saying, “Hey, would you guys mind identifying yourselves with Me in some way? Don’t worry, I don’t actually care if you do anything I do or change your lifestyle at all. I’m just looking for people who are willing to say they believe in Me and call themselves Christians.” Seriously? No one can really believe that this is all it means to be a Christian. But then why do so many people live this way? It appears that we’ve lost sight of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. The concept of being a disciple isn’t difficult to understand, but it affects everything. …

Maker

contradiction in this? The call to be a disciple of Jesus Christ is open to everyone, but we don’t get to write our own job description. If Jesus is Lord, then He sets the agenda. If Jesus Christ is Lord, then your life belongs to Him. He has a plan, agenda, and calling for you. You don’t get to tell Him what you’ll be doing today or for the rest of your life. It All Comes Down to Love But don’t get the impression that following Jesus is all about joyless sacrifice. More than anything else, following Jesus boils down to two commands, which He said were the most important commandments in the Old Testament Law: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. (Matt. 22:37–40)

“The concept of being a disciple isn’t difficult to understand, but it affects everything.”

The Lord of Grace Salvation is all about the grace of God. There is absolutely nothing that you can do to save yourself or earn God’s favor. Paul said, “By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph. 2:8–9). No one can brag about his or her good deeds because our works cannot save us. Salvation comes through the grace of God as we place our faith in Jesus Christ. All salvation requires is faith: Do you believe that Jesus is who He says He is? But keep in mind that while this is simple, it’s not easy. Faith in Jesus Christ means believing that He is Lord (according to Rom. 10:9). Have you ever thought about what that word Lord means? We sometimes think of it as another name for God, but it’s actually a title. It refers to a master, owner, or a person who is in a position of authority. So take a minute to think this through: Do you really believe that Jesus is your master? Do you believe that He is your owner—that you actually belong to Him? Paul is so bold as to tell us: “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Cor. 6:19–20). The same Lord who by His grace set us free from sin and death now owns us. We belong to Him, and He calls us to live in obedience to His rule. The problem is, many in the church want to “confess that Jesus is Lord,” yet they don’t believe that He is their master. Do you see the obvious

It all comes down to love. Peter expressed it well for people like us, who didn’t see Jesus on earth but follow Him nonetheless: “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Pet. 1:8). Following Jesus is not about diligently keeping a set of rules or conjuring up the moral fortitude to lead good lives. It’s about loving God and enjoying Him. But lest we think that we can love God and live any way we want to, Jesus told us very clearly, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). The love for God in the first commandment is made practical in the love for our neighbors in the second commandment. John actually told us that if we don’t love the people that we can see around us, then we don’t love God, whom we can’t see (1 John 4:20). True love is all about sacrifice for the sake of the ones you love: “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” (1 John 3:16). When we understand love in this light, it’s not difficult to understand that love for God and obedience to Jesus Christ cannot be separated. God’s love changes us from the inside out and redefines every aspect of our lives.

f you could change the life of a child for the better, would you? The answer seems obvious, right? Of course, we would change the life of a child for the better if we had the opportunity to do so. Well, guess what? Here’s your opportunity. With Northland’s pledge of support, Christ’s Hope International has started a Ministry CarePoint in Ombeyi, Kenya, to change the lives (in many cases, save the lives) of 26 incredible children. What is a Ministry CarePoint? It’s a lifeline for children who have been severely impacted by HIV and AIDS. Many of these children are orphaned, having lost both parents to the AIDS pandemic. All of these children are extremely vulnerable. A CarePoint provides a child with three meals a week (for many children, these meals are the only regular meals they receive), medical care and the chance to attend school. At the CarePoint, the focus is on meeting the physical needs and spiritual development of each child. Educational, emotional and social mentorship and guidance are an important part of the CarePoint experience. Bringing the lifechanging message of Jesus Christ is foremost in what a CarePoint does. This includes giving children the tools they need to become “cycle breakers” through Christ’s Hope’s Choose to Wait program, which teaches them God’s plan for sexual and marital purity. I went to Kenya last August with a Distributed Journeys team from Northland. There I got to meet and care for the children who are fervently praying and anxiously waiting for the chance to become part of the CarePoint. What will it take for them to be part of the CarePoint? Well, you. For $38 a month, you can sponsor one of these children and make an irrevocable, lifechanging, positive impact on his or her life. Think of it—$38 a month! It seems ridiculous that I spend more than that feeding and caring for the two cats and dog that are part of my family. I spend more than that on cable TV a month. I spend more than that on eating out in a month. I spend more than that on hair care and makeup products a month. I could go on and on … and I bet you can relate to one or more of my spending habits. My family is fortunate to sponsor Jorim and Norah, siblings I got the chance to meet while on my mission trip last year. We got the chance to do many things together: learn, play, laugh, sing, dance, eat, pray, hug. They know, through the sponsorship, that they are loved and not forgotten. They can make their hopes and dreams for a

ver thought or said, “Someday — when things slow down or the money is available — I’ll answer God’s call to GO …”? Well, make your “someday” TODAY in 2013! There are many opportunities this year to serve on a global scale by joining one of the short-term mission teams Northland has to offer. Listed here is a sampling of the trips available to you. We communicate frequently through cards, emails and letters, and I’m looking forward to visiting them in the future when I once again take the Distributed Journey to Kenya. Here are just three of the children who need you: Merceline lives with her aunt and uncle, six cousins, a brother and a sister. Her father died in 2003, and her mother died in 2012. Her dream is to become an accountant because she is good at math. She enjoys singing and drawing. She prays that God will provide clothing and protection for her family, especially her aunt and uncle. Brian has no brothers or sisters, and lives with his grandmother and her four sons. His mother passed away. His father remarried and moved away. His dream is to become a doctor because he likes the idea of being able to help others. Brian is often serious and seems somewhat sad. He prays for good health and ongoing provision for his family. Maurice lives with his mother and three sisters. His father passed away in 2005. His dream is to become a doctor so he can help those who are sick. He prays that the Lord will provide him with clothes and a blanket, and for provision and protection for his family. I’m asking you to join me in giving hope and a future to a child. I’m praying every day for God to provide sponsors for these children. It’s the best $38 you’ll ever spend. SERVE LOCALLY LifeHope Walks Alongside Those in Need BY JAMILA MILLETTE

L

ife is full of surprises. These surprises can be good things we encounter unexpectedly, or sometimes they are unforeseen challenges for which we could never plan. Here at Northland, we meet with families and individuals each and every day who have experienced many of these challenges, including the loss of employment, an illness, the death of a loved one or another situation that leaves them feeling alone in their struggle. God has called us in the LifeHope benevolence ministry to show His love and compassion to those who are hurting or feel a sense of hopelessness in their current situation. At LifeHope, our vision and purpose for offering financial assistance is to see people connect into a relationship with Christ. Our passion is to walk alongside those in need, including families, individuals and the elderly who are needing not only financial assistance, but also discipleship. We holistically serve all

Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (ESV).

of God’s people who come to us for assistance and disciple them, equip them and provide opportunities for them to serve others. Our volunteer advocates, interns and staff members work together to serve those in need through life skills training, financial assistance, financial counseling and providing a listening ear to each person we encounter. To best serve all who are in need, LifeHope has created a new online application, which may be accessed from any computer with Internet access at any time. The applicant is then given an appointment to meet with an advocate, who will walk alongside the individual for a minimum of three weeks. Access to a computer to complete this application is available at the Care Center Building at Northland at Longwood every Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (ESV). If you or someone you know is in a financial crisis, visit our website, lifehope.northlandchurch.net to access the online application. We are here to serve, and if we cannot meet your financial need, we have a number of other resources that may support. If God has placed in your heart the desire to serve those in need at LifeHope, we have serving opportunities for you! Rebecca Lang Shares About Mobilization, Her Journey

L

ast fall, Rebecca joined the Mobilization team. She works alongside James Li and Melinda Rutland, and they focus their efforts on providing easy and engaging ways to help congregants connect to God through practical ministry. Here she shares more about her journey. Rebecca Lang Northland: Rebecca, you are fairly new to Northland, both as a congregant and as a new member to the Mobilization team. Share with us a little bit about your journey in responding to God. Rebecca: I was experiencing a vey difficult time in my life in the summer of 2011. During this season my family began attending Northland and I started volunteering at the welcome desk. God used the relationships I formed there to change my life, my marriage and my family. My hope as part of the Mobilization team is that others get connected to see change in their life through volunteer opportunities. Northland: Before you came to Northland, tell us about your previous work experience. Rebecca: While attending the University of Florida I worked at Gap to earn extra money. I loved engaging with my customers! I loved it so much it was my career for 16 years. However, it was time-consuming, required a lot of travel, and I had to be available around the clock. Toward the end, I felt God calling me away so I could focus on being the wife and mother that He wanted me to be. Northland: After volunteering at the welcome desk, you joined the bookstore team. How did that role prepare you for your new role in Mobilization? Rebecca: Working in the bookstore was valuable because for the first time in my life, my job was not about the bottom line. It was about equipping and resourcing people in any season of their life. These interactions prepared me for the multiple conversations with our congregation in connecting them to areas of practical ministry. Northland: Typically people know about serving in Children’s Ministries, serving Communion, and with students. What areas do you find unique that the Northland Mobilization website has to offer? Rebecca: We have so many ways for our congregants to connect based on their skills, talents and gifting. Some of the roles we offer are blog editor, writing curriculum, evening host, translation and more. By the way, if you have a palm tree in your yard, we’ve got a role for you. We need 425 palm branches for Palm Sunday! Go to www.northlandchurch.net/ volunteer for more details. Northland: Rebecca, what drives you to do what you do? Rebecca: First and foremost, I love God. Secondly, I love people. And finally, I love bringing those two things together. That might be through conversation or working alongside others on a volunteer project or meeting them at the Hub. My paramount goal, though, is to connect people to Jesus.

HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church. For more videos on how to build a simple church, so that you can effectively gather with others to transform your community, visit www. doingchurchsimply.com.
