She already had been applying her artistic skills professionally. “In the early 1990s, I hand-painted and stenciled clothing, sweatshirts and tee shirts, wooden articles, and needlepoint pictures,” she said. “After accepting money

craft and toy stores and this gave me the opportunity to experiment with more stamps and inks.” Fowler’s talent began to grow. Sometime later Gary Benzel, owner of the former Windsor Shop in North Haven, gave her impetus — teaching after-school and adult-education programs. She was hired by Benzel to demonstrate the holiday houses and snow baby stamps at his Christmas Open House events. “Working for Gary gave me great exposure and was a rewarding experience,” Fowler said. “I initially only made cards for friends, relatives, and co-workers. Then I started taking orders for holiday cards, which eventually led to the start of a division called Uniquely Yours Cards.” “I call my company, which I operate from home Uniquely Yours Cards because I am creating products, one-at-atime, that depict the personality and preferences of my recipients and their friends and relatives, and each item

for a sweatshirt set and then taking offers for more items, I realized that it wasn’t a hobby anymore. By the end of 1995, I discovered rubber stamping and the rest is history.” Fowler explained that in November of 1995 she was teaching religious education and needed a snowflake die cut for a class activity. While shopping in a parent/teacher store in Massachusetts, she found a rubberstamp of a snowman and some die ink. Having experience with tissue paper and cardstock, Fowler made some holiday cards. “The holiday cards were a big hit and later I found two books on rubber-stamp making and taught myself,” Fowler said. “At that time there were no rubber stamp stores in Connecticut and no rubber stamps in craft stores. Most of the manufacturers were in California.” Fowler continued, “I did not give up and I was fortunate to be hired by Hero Rubber Stamps in California to demonstrate their stamps in

Through the years Fowler has expanded her collection and products, which now include greeting cards for most of life’s yearly events such as birthdays, graduation, weddings, get-well occasions, thinking of you, thank you, anniversary, sympathy, summer, invitations and the various holidays. “There is a lot of competition in my field, but I feel that my company stands out because my marketing plan includes not just making and selling cards, but sharing the crafts with others by way of adult education programs, at libraries and other workshops, and craft shows,” said Fowler. “I have participated in North Haven’s Show and Sell for the past two years and also have participated in the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven.” Fowler is currently trying to sell her cards on a consignment basis, and her cards are now for sale at a
