to pick up what you forgot.” The two-storey home features several guest bedrooms on the first level, but most of the living is done upstairs. And what an upstairs it is. At every turn is something eye-catching, something curious or something altogether unexpected. “Most of it is sentimental,” Patty said. There are antique toys and games, handcarved totem poles by island resident Skip Duhamel, a collection of brass candelabras and pewter containers, containers filled with old matchboxes, miniature cannons and antique pistols, detailed model ships, a case filled with old 78s, a 12th century German wagon wheel on the mantle, and a French-made 17th century hand-carved wooden lectern in the shape of a phoenix. That last piece is kept behind protective glass. And that’s not the only special piece stored behind glass. There’s a rather precious big drum gifted to Fred by famed friend Dennis Banks, an Ojibwe leader and cofounder of the American Indian Movement. It’s so very special and sacred, the glass doors may not even be opened without offering tobacco. Fred became Banks’ spiritual little brother by accepting the gifted drum. And when Fred and Patty are gone from the world, the drum will then belong to Beaver Island. They originally intended to place a television in the drum cabinet, so instead they installed a drop down projection screen and mounted a television projector to the ceiling. And Fred loves it, Patty said, laughing.
