This is the 13th year that Mary Faculak and Laurie Lesser Hodgson have produced the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Guide & Business Directory. This involved designing, writing articles, selling ads, and photographing events themselves, as well as soliciting articles and photographs from community members. The “professionals” said they couldn’t do it, but they believed in the adage, “Proceed as if success is inevitable.” And it was!

Portside Arts Fair

Saturday, August 5: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 6: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In the summer of 1962, a small group of East Jordan residents led by Cyg Riley decided that East Jordan was a perfect location to help local artists exhibit and sell their works. Summer resident painter Sarkis Sarkisian from the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts told Mrs. Riley that if East Jordan could host a summer arts fair he would bring up 10 of his artists to exhibit. The inaugural fair in August 1962 featured 30 exhibiting artists. Since that time, the fair has grown to its limit of 75 exhibitors featuring a variety of mixed media. Portside has a reputation for displaying both the works of established

artists as well as the works of new and innovative young artists. Portside has been held at the Elm Pointe Estate on the shore of beautiful Lake Charlevoix since 1972. Artists set up displays on the lawn surrounding the 100 year old homestead turned summer estate. Musicians entertain the artists and buyers, while children take part in the crafts in the Children’s Booth. Mouthwatering All-American favorites like hot dogs and apple pie are available at the Evangelical Lutheran Church booth.

Rogers Family Homestead Preserve Rogers/Dressel/Jordan River Preserve Complex Land Size & Description: 201 acres combined, with more than two miles along the shores of the Jordan River. A broad diversity of habitats lie along this stretch of the Jordan River ranging from mixed hardwood/conifer swamp to upland savannahs. From these preserves, the river empties into the Jordan River estuary on the outskirts of the city of East Jordan. Trails: A parking area and easy 1.5 mile trail system is found at the Rogers Family Homestead Preserve. Just upstream of the preserves lies a public access/canoe launch, making for a nice paddling destination that ends in East Jordan at the edge of Lake Charlevoix. In 1869, Samuel G. Rogers and his wife Eleanor moved from Ontario to homestead the land that is now the Rogers Preserve. The land was cultivated with oxen and horses and hay was grown to feed the beef and dairy cattle and pigs. The adjacent farmstead is still owned by family members.

Raven Ridge Nature Preserve Land Size & Description: 140 acres, a mix of open fields and wooded ridges. The property includes an old homestead site which is available for student archeological studies. Trails: A rustic parking area off of a dirt road is located at the trailhead. Trails total more than 1½ miles and are quite hilly. One trail takes you to an overlook platform providing views of the valley beneath. Another trail connects the preserve trails with the Raven Hill Discovery Center which lies adjacent to the preserve. The Raven Ridge property was purchased in 2001 as a result of joint fundraising efforts by the Conservancy and the people of Raven Hill Discovery Center. (See page 25.)

St. Clair Lake/Six Mile Lake Natural Area Land Size & Description: 192 acres, with 8,155 feet along St. Clair Lake and Sinclair River. The land includes marshes, cedar wetlands, fields, uplands and forests, and provides one of the longest stretches of undeveloped shoreline within the Elk River Watershed. It is located in the upper portion of an interconnecting chain of lakes and rivers which crosses the Charlevoix-Antrim county border making it a beautiful place for silent water sports. Mink, otter, great blue heron, belted kingfishers, and an occasional bald eagle are among the region’s inhabitants. Trails: A small parking area is found off Ellsworth Road (C48). A short, woodchipped trail and boardwalk leads to an overlook. A canoe/kayak put-in is found at the end of the parking area. The protection of the natural area was made possible by the efforts of a local grassroots group which initiated the project, raised funds, and prompted the first joint project between the Little Traverse Conservancy, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, and local residents. Funds were also provided by the Malpass Family and South Arm Township. :: ::

And East Jordan’s very own community farm invites everyone along for the ride. Head on out to the farm and get to know Wagbo! Exciting things are happening this year at the Martha Wagbo Farm & Education Center. We all know that farms have always, out of necessity, operated as multifunction “makerspaces.” This year, the Makerspace at Wagbo makes it official as a physical location for people to create, equipped with the tools the do so. Are you an innovator? Wish to hone a craft and focus on your art? Connect with others in your community - of all skill levels - for inspiration and motivation? The Makerspace at Wagbo includes the Workshop, a large project space with a woodworking focus; and Olga’s Studio, offering space and tools for textile arts, paper arts, painting and writing. Stop by or contact the farm to check it out and find out how to get involved.

Check out the Wagbo Farm’s Occasional & Ongoing programming, like : Farm Open Houses, Friends of the Maple Sugar Bush and Maple Sugaring Season, Full Moon Feasts, Northwoods Family Nature Club, Radicle Gardening & Canning Clubs, and Stitch & Such. Drop-in visits can include: the gardens, picnic areas, and trails; taking a self-guided tour and viewing the many furry and feathered residents of the farm; getting involved in the seasonal activities on the farm; and purchasing a unique and locally produced item at the Creekside Trading Post. The Wagbo Farm is located at 5745 N M-66, about 3 miles south of downtown East Jordan. Hours are dawn to dusk most days. Contact the farm for large group visits and special tours. After the snow melts, Raven Hill is full of families enjoying hands-on connections between science, history and art, as they explore the Center’s museum and grounds. Unique Attractions Stonehedge Fiber Mill & Yarn Shop Stonehedge is a 160-year-old working farm which, for 21 years now, has been home to Stonehedge Fiber Mill - a custom processor of wool into yarn. Debbie and Chuck McDermott, who operated a petting farm at that time, pursued the new business as a supplementary source of income, and originally used two rooms for the operation. Debbie is a shepherd, spinner, and fiber artist who also maintains her own flock of eight breeds of sheep and angora goats. Chuck created the equipment used at the fiber mill. Since then, Stonehedge has expanded several times and now employs 14 people. The wholesale production moved to Lake Street Center about 7 years ago, with the farm site still in use for custom processing services and retail sales. The business’ wholesale yarn also can be found in roughly 250 stores nationwide. Stonehedge Fiber Milling Equipment has developed equipment for about 40 U.S. mills plus some international clients.

Castle Farms

Nature abounds at Castle Farms. Start with the eighteen gardens - formal and infomal - which are stunning works of natural beauty, matching any of their counterparts found throughout Europe. Play tag in the Hedge Maze, feed the native rainbow trout in the Reflection Pond, have a picnic lunch at Birch Lake, explore the wood-chip paths of the Enchanted Forest, and then, of course, don’t forget to take your picture with Norm, the Castle dragon. While there, experience the Castle’s past with a video presenting the history and restoration process that transformed a 1918 farm into the world-class historic property it is today. Wander the fully restored stone courtyards and buildings at your leisure and view the extensive collections. Visit the 1918 Museum, which showcases posters, musical scores, uniforms, and other memorabilia from the Great War era. See if you recognize any of the famous bands who once performed at the Castle. You also won’t want to miss the largest working outdoor Model Railroad in Michigan (open May-Oct, weather permitting) with over 70 G-scale trains operate on more than 2,500 feet of track. :: :: 27

“Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars... and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers - for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are. ~Osho

Our Schools Ellsworth Community Schools Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School. With a small student to teacher and staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size including: free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades. Ellsworth Community School was named an Academic State Champion by the Center for Michigan. The Center for Michigan also ranked Ellsworth Elementary fifth out of over 600 elementary schools statewide. In 2014, Ellsworth Community School was named a REWARD school by the State of Michigan for outstanding test scores, and in 2013 Ellsworth was awarded the Winners Circle Award from the Michigan Association of School Administrators for innovative school programming. We are annually ranked as one of America’s best high schools in US News and World Report, and continue to outperform other schools in the region based on standardized test scores. Ellsworth clearly offers its students unequaled opportunities.

Aaron Gaffney Superintendent 58

Ellsworth Community School is a family friendly environment where parents and the community are an integral part of the every day activities of the school. Ellsworth is not just a topnotch school - it is a major employer in the area, a gathering place for our community, and a critical component of the community we call Ellsworth. :: 231-536-7351 ::

East Jordan Public Schools Make East Jordan Public Schools your natural choice to provide a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust. We embrace the challenge of blending the many voices of our community who desire schools that deliver a first-class education to all students. It is the goal of East Jordan Public Schools to provide a climate of academic excellence for all students. Our school and community share the vision of empowering students to make wise life choices and become productive citizens and of helping them to realize their dreams by seeing an unfathomed world of possibilities. In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply. Our fine arts programs continue to produce world class artists and opportunities. Red Devil athletic teams have established themselves as a Lake Michigan Conference power and provide experiences that truly set our students apart. There is no doubt that our community should be proud of our kids, and the support that we have received has been much appreciated. While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also rec-

ognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best. We have a tremendous community and a school that is taking strides each day to help our students maximize their potential and accomplish meaningful goals. I am grateful to all those who contribute their time, money, and energy to allow our programs to exist and grow. Thank you for your support – we will continue to do our best to make you proud. For those of you who are new to the East Jordan, we would love the opportunity to show you our school district and introduce you to the remarkable staff and students that make up our school family. Each school year promises to be another positive chapter in the storied history of East Jordan, as our students and staff build on our past success while preparing for future accomplishments. Red Devil Pride is at an all-time high, and the future is bright for all. We are . . . EJ!
