EDITORIAL As the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 home and away season draws to a close this weekend, I thought I would reflect on the season. There have been a number of good news stories this year and I would like to acknowledge them.

For the very first time the Division 3 structure fielded nine clubs. Laurimar FC entered senior teams for the very first time, and Reservoir FC re-emerged after a year in recess in 2016.

I would like to congratulate the committee and volunteers of both clubs for the hard work they have put in to get their two senior teams onto the ground.

It was also pleasing to see them both win games during the year, although not as many as they would like, but at the same time enough to encourage them to continue the hard work for next season and to build upon their performances of 2017.

improve on its inaugural season in 2016, challenging many teams and recording a number of good wins along the way. I have no doubt that both of these clubs will be aiming to climb the ladder in 2018.

St Mary’s FC has continued its consistent season from 2016 and has secured another finals berth. The challenge for the Burra is to play their way into a grand final. They are certainly capable of doing so and anything can happen in finals football.

Epping FC has been a solid performer during the season and is playing its best football at the right time of year. With another finals campaign upon the Blues, can they exorcise the demons of the past two grand final defeats to finally win the premiership and get back into Division 2? A young keen list with another season of senior football under their belts may be the key to challenge the top-two sides.

Heidelberg West FC continued to build on its hard work from the past few years and to see the Hawks challenging for a finals birth for most of the season was extremely satisfying for everyone involved at the club, and also for the NFL. To win seven matches this year with one round to go, was an outstanding effort compared to their recent performances.

Banyule FC and South Morang FC have pretty much controlled the top positions on the ladder throughout the season, and both clubs will be very determined to maintain their strong form into the finals series. Both sides will be hard to dislodge from a potential grand final match up, but I am sure Epping FC and St Mary’s FC will be trying their hardest to force their way into the grand final.

Mernda FC would be disappointed with its on-field performance this year and I am sure it will be looking at all areas to lift in 2018. Kilmore FC continued to

NFL News POWER OPTIMISTIC OF SUCCESSFUL FUTURE

Laurimar coach Wayne Sharkie believes 2017 has been a success for his side in its inaugural season in the NFL’s senior competition.

The Power enter the final round of the season with a 2-13 record and look poised to avoid the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 wooden spoon at Reservoir’s expense.

While there is still plenty of work to do on the field, Sharkie believes the club couldn’t be in a better position.

“It’s been a good season in terms of establishing the club and getting a lot of stuff going that needed to go from scratch,” Sharkie told The Northerner.

“I think we’ve played about 45 players in the seniors this year so we’ve had a really good look at the broad spectrum of the list.

“In terms of our footy, we’ve been pretty good in patches but we just need to keep on improving, working on that consistency and making sure that topend is put out more often.”

The silver-lining from the campaign is the continued development of the club’s up and coming youngsters.

Without an under-19s side this season, Sharkie has been able to expose plenty of kids to senior footy in an attempt to fast-track the success of the club.

Their progress was demonstrated on Saturday, when the Power ran premiership aspirant within 34 points at Laurimar Reserve.

“Last weekend against Banyule we played six players under 17 and another two that would’ve been eligible to play 19s if we had them,” Sharkie said.

“That’s the big upside of the club and the reason that the club exists this year, because if we hadn’t been around for those young kids to come up to then they would’ve disappeared.

“This is the year they really had to have a senior club step up, and those young kids can all play so that’s what the club’s looking to build on.

“The foundation and what the club has found this year the ... recruitment and future lies in the development of these kids.”

Laurimar travels to Waterview Recreation Reserve to take on Mernda in the last game of the season this

Saturday to take on a Demons side they have already been victorious against in 2017.

While optimistic about his side’s chances to get another win to finish the season on a high, the attitude remains the same – give the kids more exposure.

“Of course we are going to try and win to finish off the season, but we’re going to maintain the kids,” Sharkie said.

“The game for both sides this week is insignificant for the fact that it won’t make any difference to ladder positions or effect finals aspirations. So for us it’s still about getting yet another game into the kids and playing another game together as a unit.”

Sharkie also lauded the efforts of those who got the club to where it is today, suggesting it’s their contribution that has the club in a good position going forward.

“We had a number of veterans who put their hand up to help start the club this year,” Sharkie said.

“The club very much appreciates the efforts of those guys who put their body on the line ... establishing a side for the better of the club. That’s really important.”

NFL News BULLS SCORE VITAL WIN

Bundoora took a massive step forward in its push for a

double chance in the finals with a dour two-point win over West Preston-Lakeside.

In a game were both defences held firm, the Bulls prevailed 7.4 (46) to 6.8 (44) at Yulong Reserve.

Bundoora sits second on the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ladder with an 11-5 record, ahead of Northcote Park on percentage.

With just two rounds remaining, the two sides now have a four-point and percentage advantage over fourth-placed West Preston-Lakeside and Greensborough in fifth.

Matthew Dennis was the dominant player on the ground in the vital Round 16 win. He took numerous towering marks around the ground and kicked a gamehigh three goals.

The two-time Frank Rosbrook medallists worked well with Liam Byrne at the stoppages, with Dennis’ tap work often setting up his midfield teammate.

Dennis and Byrne were joined in the Bulls’ best by Brendan Carlyon, who was one of the game’s leading possession winners. Brenton Keating and David Mitchell also produced strong performances.

Nathan Valladares was a standout for West PrestonLakeside. The utility kept Gary Moorcroft goalless in the opening three quarters, before being thrust into attack in the final quarter where he kicking two goals from strong marks.

Mitch Tobin and Jackson Clarke racked up plenty of the ball and offered rebound from defence, while Josh Novelli and Shaun Gannon were also among the better players for the Roosters.

The loss was further soured by a hamstring injury to Ahmed Saad late in the second term. The competition leading goal kicker was lively, albeit wasteful, with 1.4 in the opening two quarters but took no part in the game after half time.

His direct opponent Brent Marshall also finished the match on the interchange after sustaining a quad injury early in the third quarter.

West Preston-Lakeside had the better of the opening quarter, however its inaccuracy in front of goal ultimately proved costly.

The Roosters kicked 1.6 in the first quarter to lead by just four points at the opening break, with a number of opportunities missed from set shots within close range.

After kicking four behinds in the first term, Saad found his range early in the second with a wonderful snap from the boundary line to stretch the visitors’ lead to 10 points.

However, Bundoora soon began to work its way back as Dennis stamped his authority on the game.

Goals to Lord and Dennis gave the home side a twopoint advantage at the main break, before the Bulls kicked the only two goals of the third term to lead by 13 points at the final change.

Valladares’ move forward paid immediate dividends, as he marked on the lead and converted early in the last quarter to give West Preston-Lakeside its first goal since the four-minute mark of the second term.

Josh Grabowski replied with a toe-poked goal at the other end, before the Roosters managed consecutive goals via Novelli and Steven Hiho to move within two points at the 18-minute mark.

As the game began to open up, Bundoora’s defence held firm. The back six, led by Dom Nixon and Ben Shelton held out a number of Rooster attacks, before Dennis pushed forward and kicked his third goal to give the Bulls breathing space.

West Preston-Lakeside tried desperately to find two late majors and did find one after Valladares outmarked his opponent and kicked truly, however it came with just three seconds remaining as the Bulls held on for a vital win .

The Fitzroy Stars all but locked in an A Plus Labour

Solutions Division 2 finals place with a 14-point win over Thomastown in Round 16.

After a frustrating start, the Stars produced a dominant patch in the third term which helped set up the 12.14 (86) to 13.22 (100) victory at Main Street Reserve.

The win puts the third-placed Stars six points clear of fourth position, needing to win only one of their final two home and away games to book in their sixthconsecutive finals appearance.

On the flip side, the result puts the Bears’ finals hopes in jeopardy. They slipped to fifth position, behind fourthplaced Lower Plenty on percentage and may need to beat both North Heidelberg and Lower in the final two weeks to play finals.

Richard Bamblett, Peter Hood and Kain Proctor were the most instrumental players in Fitzroy’s victory, providing countless opportunities for the Stars in their attacking half. Clinton Benjamin also made a strong return.

Sashe Spiroski’s goal kicking form continued with five majors for Thomastown. Adrian Natoli, Jacob Osei-Duro and Matthew Dirkx were also impressive for the Bears.

The home side was the more dangerous in the opening quarter, producing continuous entries inside 50 to keep the Stars’ defence on edge.

After 12 minutes of play, Spiroski kicked the first goal of the afternoon to finally give the Bears’ reward for effort.

The Stars’ began to become visibly irritated with their poor disposal efficiency throughout the quarter, as they lost many opportunities to apply scoreboard pressure by turning the ball over at critical times.

Despite the frustrating start, the Stars would have been relieved to trail by only six points at quarter time.

Thomastown made the perfect start to the second quarter when Spiroski converted his second major to increase the margin to 12 points.

But suddenly, after seven consecutive behinds, the visitors not only found their first goal for the match but produced an exhilarating patch of brilliance.

The Stars kicked the next four goals within just five minutes of game time to put their host on the back foot.

Thomastown did well to arrest the momentum and quickly restored the margin in its own favour, kicking the next three goals, including two to Spiroski, to take a nine-point advantage into the main break.

Again Thomastown kicked the first goal of the quarter, this time through Koe Ngawati, to continue its momentum.

But just as the Bears looked like opening a handy advantage, Fitzroy was able to fight its way back into the match.

The Stars’ looked more dangerous with the football throughout the third quarter and kicked six of the next eight goals to go into the final break 15 points ahead.

Despite the visitors’ strong run and carry, the Bears’ failed to give in and managed to bring the margin to under a goal twice in the final quarter.

However, late goals to Richard Bamblett and Jai Burns proved to be enough as the Stars’ stormed home to a crucial 14-point victory.

The Stars’ have a big test when they return home to battle second-placed Diamond Creek in Round 17. It doesn’t get much easier for Thomastown who travels to Shelley Reserve to take on ladder-leader North Heidelberg.

NFL News DEMONS RETURN TO WINNERS’ LIST

Mernda snapped a twelve-game losing streak with an

emphatic win over Reservoir at Crispe Park in Round 17.

The Demons led from start to finish in the 25.16 (166) to 10.7 (67) triumph. They outworked and out-pressured the Mustangs, then used the ball more cleanly when in clear space.

Despite the long losing sequence, Mernda had been better in recent weeks – despite losing to top teams by reasonable margins.

Highlighting the win was a bag of ten majors by David Hutchinson. Returning to the team after a two-week suspension, Hutchinson was unstoppable in the air and was deadly accurate when shooting for goal.

He delighted the Mernda faithful in the final stanza with a big pack mark in the goal square to bring up double figures.

Poor disposal under little or no pressure also cost Reservoir dearly. A five-minute period of the second term helped Mernda gain the decisive break.

Reservoir had just booted the first major of the quarter to reduce the margin to a manageable 21 points. The next two goals were scored by the Demons as a result of downfield frees.

A third was kicked after a Mustang defender sent the ball out on the full. Mernda blew the lead out to 52 points in the second term, before a mini-fightback from the Mustangs saw them register the final three goals of the half.

They also scored first in the third term to get within 28 points, but the Demons dominated thereafter. Their third term efficiency in going forward was top class.

Mernda had winners all over the park. Conlan Gunn was excellent under the packs and constantly got the ball moving forward. His highlight was stealing an errant Reservoir handball and finding Hutchinson for a goal.

Josh Delaney gave the Demons great run off half back.

Adrian Stefanile was a livewire through the middle and finished off with a well-deserved goal.

Matthew Tarr was extremely creative across half forward and set up many scoring opportunities. Daniel Bryant and Josh Nixon played good support acts up forward with three majors each.

“We just want to finish off the year on a positive note,” a relieved Mernda coach Steve Power said. “We began

the year with two wins and would like to end the year the same way.”

Power also had some positive words for the Mustangs – who spent a year out of football in 2016. “Credit to the committee and staff at Reservoir for fielding two teams all year,” he said.

Finding winners for the Mustangs was more difficult.

Their ruck duo of Liam Killey and Emrys Black performed admirably, while Reece Miller was their best midfielder.

Kent Beaumont showed silky skills in kicking four goals and Shane Potter slotted three as a marking forward.

Reservoir had lost two players for the day – Scott Goodwin and Willem Richardson – before the quarter time siren.

“A step backwards,” coach Aaron Collins said after the game. We have just got to show some fight and spirit against a quality outfit in Kilmore next week.”

The match will be Reservoir’s first ever trip to J.J. Clancy Reserve, as their only other clash was at Crispe Park earlier this year.

Mernda has a past players function next week when it hosts Laurimar at Waterview Recreation Reserve. Back to back wins would give supporters hope for the 2018 season.

NFL News 2017 JUNIOR BEST AND FAIREST AWARDS The Northern Football League hosted the 2017 Junior Presentation Night on Monday August 14, at La Trobe University’s Union Hall.

The awards night was held just six days before this year’s 25 junior grand finals, which will close out another great year of junior action.

Diamond Creek Junior Football Club was rewarded for a great year on and off the field, winning the NFL Junior Club of the Year award, ahead of finalists Bundoora Park, Kinglake and West Ivanhoe.

Laurimar’s Zac Reichert claimed the Northern Knights Under-15 Rookie of the Year, while the NFL representative awards were won by Joel Trudgeon (Under-15A), Riki Kusaka (Under-15B), Ashleigh Snow (Under-15 Girls), Benjamin Fisher (Under-14A) and Riley Mudge (Under-14B).

Dylan Brown was named the Junior Umpire of the Year and Harry Grattidge claimed the Most Promising Junior Umpire Award.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview FINALISTS LOCKED IN The top-five sides have confirmed their place in the finals with two rounds remaining in the 2017 Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 home and away season.

Greensborough’s runaway win at Eltham locked in this year’s finalists, with the last fortnight set to sort out the order of the top-five moving into the post-season.

Remarkably, the Boro remain a mathematical chance to pinch a finals double chance, despite starting the year 0-5. Given the closeness within the top-half of the ladder, there is still plenty to play for in the final fortnight of the regular season.

There are also plenty of scenarios that can play out at the bottom of the ladder after each of the bottomfour lost in Round 16. All four will be desperate to get among the winners this weekend to alleviate pressure heading into next week’s final round.

Heidelberg is the side with least to play for in the final fortnight. The reigning premier looks inked in for a sixth-place finish – unable to play finals, while also sitting comfortably clear of the four sides below.

While every game from here has plenty riding on it, the top-billed game in Round 17 takes place at J.E. Moore Park where fourth-placed West Preston-Lakeside hosts ladder-leader Macleod.

Sitting four points outside the top-three, West PrestonLakeside will likely have to win each of its final two home and away games to head into the finals series with a double chance.

The Roosters fell agonisingly short of victory at Bundoora last Saturday, losing by two points in a match dominated by defence. Ultimately the Roosters were left to lament wasted chances in the first quarter – where they kicked 1.6 and left the door ajar for the Bulls.

The cause wasn’t helped by a hamstring injury sustained by Ahmed Saad, which sidelined the competition leading goal kicker after half time. The Roosters will sweat on his availability heading into the finals, along with Patrick Karnezis who hasn’t played since Round 12.

Nathan Valladares again displayed his ability at both ends of the field at Yulong Reserve. He kept Gary Moorcroft goalless for three quarters, before being thrust into attack in the final term and kicking two goals.

claim the minor premiership and earn a deserved rest in the opening week of the finals.

The undermanned ladder-leader made it five wins on the trot last week when it overcame a slow start to beat a plucky Montmorency by 52 points. The Magpies kicked 3.7 in the first term to lead by 10 points, before the Roos rallied with 15 goals to five after quarter time.

Hamish Paynter led the charge through the middle of the ground, while Brad Leggett was rock-solid in defence. The representative defender has been among his side’s best in five of his past seven outings and is in great touch at the right time of the year.

Nick Lynch made a welcome return and kicked three goals in his first senior game since Round 10. Having played just seven games this year, an in-form Lynch would be an added bonus for the Roos in September.

Whittlesea will be hoping to continue its recent good record against Bundoora when it hosts the Bulls at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. The Eagles have won the past two outings between the sides.

Whittlesea will be on the rebound after last week missing a golden opportunity to edge clear of the relegation scrap. The Eagles led for the majority of the day against Heidelberg, only to fall behind late in the piece in the one-point home defeat.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Jim Atkins side, who had many chances to win the game in the last quarter.

Unfortunately the Eagles were wayward when their opportunities arose and booted a pain-staking 1.10 in the final term.

The positive was the Eagles once again demonstrated their best football is more than competitive in Division 1 and a similar effort in the final fortnight, with a better conversion rate, will likely see them maintain their place in the top flight for 2018.

Bundoora scored a vital win over West PrestonLakeside to move closer to its first top-three finish since 2013. The two-point win was achieved without Nathan Thomas, Danny Younan, Andrew Carmusciano and Isaac Muller, while Brent Marshall was sidelined in the second half.

Two-time Frank Rosbrook medallist Matthew Dennis did it all in the win. His ruckwork was outstanding, often finding Liam Byrne to surge the Bulls clear at the stoppages. He also pushed forward for a number of strong marks and finished with three goals.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview On a day where goals were hard to come by, Josh and Nick Grabowski showed flashes of brilliance to combine for three majors, while Brendan Carlyon and David Mitchell also performed well as the Bulls scored their second win over West Preston-Lakeside in 2017.

Northcote Park will play its final home game of the year when it hosts Montmorency at Bill Lawry Oval.

The Cougars go into the match with a 6-2 home record this season.

Matt McLennan’s side got back on the winners’ list last Saturday when it outlasted Hurstbridge in a shootout at Ben Frilay Oval. The visitors trailed at quarter and half time, before running out 15-point winners.

The Cougars could have won more comfortably, but for wastefulness in front of goal, kicking 8.12 to 6.3 after half time. They booted 3.7 in the final quarter – a tally which was made to look better after Brock McLennan converted a goal after the final siren.

With Jackson Starcevich sidelined by a serious knee injury and Ash Close still on Collingwood VFL duties, the Cougars’ makeshift forward line was lively with McLennan and Joel Donaldson combining for six goals as their side reached triple figures for the first time since Round 11.

Montmorency made a strong, albeit frustrating start, against Macleod. The Magpies controlled the opening stanza but should have been more than 10 points ahead at the first break after recording five more scoring shots.

After being outscored 11 goals to two in the second and third quarters, the Magpies did well to fight out the contest in the fourth quarter to prevent the final margin from blowing out – maintaining a one game and 14 percent advantage over bottom-placed Eltham.

The unavailability of key players has certainly hurt Montmorency throughout the season, but the silver lining has been the ability to blood youngsters.

17-year-old Stefan Uzelac was among the side’s best players last week and finished with a team-high three goals.

Greensborough will be looking for its sixthconsecutive home win when it hosts Hurstbridge at War Memorial Park.

The Boro scored a hard-fought 32-point triumph over Eltham last week, holding off a massive challenge from the Panthers before stretching away with five goals to one in the final quarter.

Once again the Boro’s best players came from the

defensive half, with Nick Riddle, Dan McLinden and Jack Johnston pivotal in the win. Only Macleod has conceded fewer points than Greensborough this year, with the Boro conceding a miserly average of 61 points in their past 11 matches.

Hurstbridge was again able to challenge a top-four side last week and will fancy its chances of causing a boilover this week after pushing Greensborough all the way in their Round 7 clash at Ben Frilay Oval.

The Bridges’ 5-11 record doesn’t provide a true reflection of the club’s performance in its return to the top flight, although their average losing margin of 28 points shows the young team has been able to remain competitive in its defeats.

Trent and Troy Barbero were both excellent against Northcote Park, while 19-year-old Cooper Perrin continue his strong first season with the club, featuring in the best players for the sixth time and improving his goal tally to 17.

Eltham will be desperate to end a long run of outs at Warringal Park when it takes on Heidelberg.

The Panthers would have breathed a sigh of relief following Heidelberg’s come-from-behind win over Whittlesea last week. However, they themselves had their chances against Greensborough – recording more scoring shots in the 7.15 (57) to 14.5 (89) loss.

Even with a win this weekend, the Panthers will likely head into Round 18 needing to win to avoid relegation. Their percentage stands at 64.35, still comfortably below Whittlesea’s 71.27.

Paul Currie, Lewis Glasgow and Anton Woods were among the best in last week’s defeat, while Michael Still kicked a season-best three goals While its own position won’t change, Heidelberg can still have a big say in shaping the final ladder – as demonstrated in last week’s come-from-behind win over Whittlesea, which has kept the relegation battle wide open.

The Tigers showed grit to fight back at the Whittlesea Showgrounds to score their seventh win of the year.

Tom Sullivan, Ryan Stone and Michael Brunelli led the fightback, while Sam Gilmore’s three goals was his best haul as a Tiger.

Despite becoming the first Division 1 premier to miss the following year’s finals since 2003 flag winner West Preston-Lakeside, Heidelberg has salvaged something from the year by blooding youngsters, with Nathan Honey and Alex Bakos the latest to make their debut.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 GREENSBOROUGH Today we host Hurstbridge in our final home game of 2017.

SENIORS: We secured our place in the finals with a 32-point victory over Eltham. Leading at every change, the boys held strong when the going got tough in the last quarter, kicking five goals to one to finish the game strongly. Our defence again was incredible, with Nick Riddle, Dan McLinden and Jack Johnston all playing big roles in the victory, while it was familiar faces Jason Rogers and Chris Clark controlling proceedings through the midfield. Josh Callaway returned from a hamstring injury in fine form, while the goals were again shared.

There is a chance of pushing into the top three if we continue to win and other results go our way.

RESERVES: Got the job done over a typically competitive Eltham. In a game where we had to work for everything we got, it was our impressive fivegoal second term that set up the 32-point win. Ryan Boyden kicked three, while skipper Brett Millsom and Dylan Clancy kicked two each. The returning Lachie McQuilken also putting in an impressive performance.

The equation is simple, if we win our last two games, we finish top,

SENIORS: I thought Saturday really showed what our group is all about. Although we did not get the points against a top-four team, we showed great signs and showed we are not done for the season. We lead at quarter time and half time and were a goal down at three quarter time but just missed again at the end.

Our boys are really showing me that they care about their footy and are continuing to search for more wins to finish off the year. We have two more big games and we will do everything we can to get another win.

I am really proud of our playing group as we certainly have not made up the numbers in Division 1 and are building a great foundation for us to springboard off for next year. “Eat em alive”, Bridges as one forward pocket would say!

RESERVES: Thought the development squad was a little stiff last Saturday as we really had our chances to take control of the game. It was just a 10-15 minute drop off that allowed Northcote to kick a handful of goals and break away. What was pleasing is to see how 14

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 HEIDELBERG This week we host Eltham.

SENIORS: It’s always been tough playing Whittlesea at the Showgrounds and last Saturday was no exception.

Despite trailing for much of the afternoon in a pretty tight contest we were able to take the four points by the narrowest of margins. Gossy and Sam Gilmore were solid all day. Great to have another two senior debutants last week with Nathan Honey and Alex Bakos getting call-ups. The silver lining of a pretty extensive injury list has been the opportunity for plenty of youngsters to play senior footy.

RESERVES: The twos unfortunately had a pretty disappointing second half after a solid start as Whittlesea put us to the sword.

TODAY: We welcome the Panthers to the Den today for the penultimate home and away round. Expecting a tough contest as they will be desperate to hold on to Division 1 footy next season.

50 GAMES: Congratulations to Will Knight who trots out in his 50th game today.

ELTHAM This week we travel to Heidelberg.

SENIORS: Inaccuracy in front of goal cost us any chance against Greensborough. Going down by 32 points in the end despite having more scoring shots.

RESEVES: The reserves battled away but also found top side Greensborough too strong overall.

UNDER-19: The Under 19s dropped from top position to fourth when defeated by Greensborough by 16 points in the end PANTHER CIRCLE – TONIGHT: Grand Prize Night after today’s game at Heidelberg on Saturday August 19. MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 NORTHCOTE PARK We need to build on last week to meet the challenges we face in the next few weeks. But first we have to get over Monty today; never an easy task.

SENIORS: It was good to get back in the winning circle although our inability to shake the determined Bridges left the game in the balance until the final minutes. We made hard work for ourselves kicking 2.7 in the last quarter before Brock made it look slightly better after the siren. Jayden Askew came in for his first game for the year after Patch was a late withdrawal and played a blinder, bringing back memories of Kev Perry 15 years ago. Speaking of Kev, his boys both played crucial roles with the elder unbackable for a consecutive Molloy Medal. Joel gave us a target in an unusual and demanding forward role while our wide receiver, Micky Naldrett, ticked up the easy uncontested possessions.

Dylan and Brock were always dangerous.

RESERVES: With the 19s having a bye, Michael, Adrian, Benny and Matthew were added to the second’s team sheet. We had control of the game but the Bridges fought it out to the end and made our boys earn every kick. Cam played in the midfield and tore the game

MONTMORENCY We travel to the Bill Lawry Oval to take on Northcote Park.

SENIORS: Our blokes showed some good signs in the first half but then fell away after half time against a top side. Macleod showed their class but we did not play enough accountable footy to put the pressure on the visitors. Really, some of our efforts at home in the last few weeks have not been up to standard though we have been hard hit by injury to better players. On the plus side, it is great to see the continued development of younger players like Bill Jenkin. NETBALL: Team 3 smashed their first final with an 18-point victory over St Martins. They looked the stronger side from the start and progressed to the Grand Final on August 2 at Parade College at 6.30pm. Team 2 had a tough game against Greensborough but look forward to being more competitive in the final game of the season. Despite being down on numbers, the seniors stood up against a determined Heidelberg. We had a strong start and it was neck and neck in the second, but they pulled away in the third quarter. Defensive pressure and creative moving in the attacking ring provided lots of positives, although mistakes getting the ball down the court were costly. Congratulations to Julia Olson who played 50 games for the club. She is a talented defender, ferociously competitive, with great netball instinct and a team player.

Q AND A WITH BILL JENKIN: Biggest influence of playing career: A lot of my influences come from my current teammates. I like to take something from guys like Benny Walton, Jesse Donaldson, Steve McCallum and all of the other experienced senior guys.

Most annoying teammate: Stevie McCallum because he never stops chirping. One of the blokes you would hate playing against but just love playing with.

Where do you see the club in two years: I would love to see the club be one of the strongest clubs in Division 1 and playing finals football. We understand we have got some developing still to do, but we’re pretty excited about the road ahead with a lot of young talent coming through.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE This week we host Macleod.

FOOTBALL: Disappointing result across the board last week. Today we get to face another challenge, taking on top of the table Macleod at Nelson Alexander Oval in a must-win encounter to keep a top-three spot alive.

The twos also need to keep the pressure on to look at booking in a finals finish. The under-19s season comes to a close today and we thank Abe and all the lads who pushed on through the whole year. Hopefully next year with an influx of some strong under-17s lads the boys can have a bit more success. Well done lads. Next week we travel to Hurstbridge in what will be another tough encounter.

SENIORS: It’s always a difficult task at Montmorency no matter ladder positions and that’s how it panned out last week. They had the wood on us early and had they been a little more accurate, we might have been down for the count. We copped a bake from Rambo at the first break but came out firing on all cylinders from that point to record a comfortable 54-point win. Hammer led from the front and Brad Leggett pulled out all stops in defence. Special mention to Jai Swainger’s first goal at this level – a mid-air strike from the goalsquare. Tim Cahill would have been proud of that one! Tyler Peirce kicked two goals on debut after snagging five in the under-19s earlier in the day.

RESERVES: A percentage-booster for the twos with a 109-point win. We had a good spread in attack with 11 individual goalkickers hitting the scoreboard. Old hands Sean Driscoll and Matty Veszpremi led a dominant midfield.

Bulls get together to congratulate Col Dyson, who was awarded with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) as part of this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours.

RECOGNISING COL DYSON (OAM): Col, who has a long lasting connection with both football clubs and their communities, was awarded an OAM for his community involvement and work in the transport industry. The presentation will take place during half time in the Whittlesea Social Rooms.

SENIORS: Jim Atkins said last week’s one-point loss to Heidelberg was tough to take. “While I was very proud of the fight we had in us, we just weren’t able to finish the job. A positive to take from today’s game is that some of our footy was fantastic. The coaches have the task now of getting the boys to lift to that next level for our final two games”. Notable players were Briffa, Janan and Riley. Spider was also good for us up forward.

RESERVES: After a slow start, we were down by 13 points at half time and the deficit could have been more with Heidelberg wasting opportunities. What the boys produced in the third quarter, kicking 9.4 to three

BUNDOORA This week we head up the road to take on the Whittlesea Eagles.

SENIORS: Great win by the boys and one we needed to win to stay in second place on the NFL ladder. In a game that was low scoring as a supporter it was starting to do my head in and when I noticed Nipper Marshall limping around in the back pocket while playing against Ahmed Saad, who is a wizard with a footy, I thought well this is going to hit the fan.

However, Nipper’s foot improved and I knew from last time Nipper had played on Ahmed he had been able to stop him from scoring freely. With five of our regular players out of the team to beat the Roosters by two points I was well pleased. Matthew Dennis played another great game and his ability to find the ball is amazing. The Grabowski boys once again worked well together and Nick’s goal after he had received the ball from his brother Josh was one for the pool room. Best players were Matthew Dennis, Liam Byrne, Brendan Carlyon and David Mitchell.

With the Smiths, the Taplins, Raynard and Fitzgerald featuring among the best, it was great to see some of the older players rewarded for their efforts and encouraging to see the talents of the younger boys.

UNDER-19: After a bye last week, the boys are keen for today’s challenge against Bundoora.

NETBALL: The netball girls played their last game for the season and the club would like to congratulate them. They showed great commitment all year. Up against Heat (who they’d previously lost to) the girls went in with a positive mindset and eventually run out winners 20-29. The girls thanked the club for supporting them and their raffles and said they hope for bigger and better things next year. They also thanked Mandy for coaching them.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - Preview STARS, LOWER EDGE CLOSER TO FINALS The top-four sides edged closer to securing finals spots in Round 16 of A Plus Solutions Division 2.

North Heidelberg and Diamond Creek are assured toptwo finishes, while wins to the Fitzroy Stars and Lower Plenty put them one step closer to finals action. At the other end of the ladder, Panton Hill is only one defeat away from being relegated.

North Heidelberg will clinch the minor premiership if it defeats Thomastown in a crucial Round 17 match. The Bears must win their final two matches to play finals.

The Bulldogs have held top spot since Round 9. In that period they have won eight games by an average of 74 points.

Shane Harvey has been one of the keys to the winning streak, kicking 63 goals during the winning run. Harvey now has 91 goals for the season and with two games remaining looks destined to reach the century.

A win over Thomastown will result in the Bulldogs ending the season undefeated at Shelley Reserve.

Thomastown could have made life a little easier if it had beaten the Fitzroy Stars last week. Sashe Spiroski’s five-goal haul was not enough to seal the win in a seesawing game at Main Street Reserve, which ended in a 14-point Stars win.

The Bears have found life tough against the Bulldogs over the past two years, losing all five matches. That includes a 93-point defeat in the most recent outing.

The Fitzroy Stars and Diamond Creek meet in the match of the round at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval.

Both sides edged closer to cementing their finals positions after victories in Round 16. Diamond Creek has secured a double chance in the finals, while the Stars need just one more win to book a sixth-straight finals appearance.

Diamond Creek has been outstanding all year and has performed superbly without key players in recent weeks. They will be without important players in September with Jai Norman overseas, while a shoulder injury has ruled out Jess Cosaitis.

Ryan Pingree has stood up in the absence of Cosaitis, kicking 19 goals in eight matches, including two bags of five.

A team that doesn’t lack any firepower is the Fitzroy Stars. The Stars are the second highest scorers in the division, averaging 111 points a game.

At the start of the season it was unclear who would

replace Daniel Francis. But instead of replacing Francis with a like for like player, the Stars have spread the goal kicking and have nine players with more than 10 goals for the season.

Richard Bamblett (four goals) and Clinton Benjamin were standouts in last week’s crucial win at Thomastown.

Lower Plenty will look to edge closer to securing finals when it hosts Panton Hill in a game that will pay tribute to the Vietnam veterans.

Lower Plenty moved back into the top four with a 49-point victory over Watsonia. Patrick Flynn was in the Bears’ best players for the 13th time this season, while Bowen Zimbolani kicked three goals.

The Bears have struggled for consistency, winning successive games on three occasions this year. Wins in the final two weeks would equal their seasonbest three-game winning streak and be the perfect platform to enter the finals.

Panton Hill’s days in A Plus Labour Division 2 look numbered following defeat to Diamond Creek. The Redbacks must now win their final two matches and hope Lalor loses both if they are going to avoid the wooden spoon.

The Redbacks have shown over the years they can compete in Division 2 and if they are relegated, will aim for promotion quickly. Daniel Noorman, Daniel Freeman and Scott Conte were best in defeat last week.

Watsonia hosts Lalor at A.K. Lines Reserve. With seven wins combined for the year, both would love a lateseason victory to build morale heading into 2018.

Watsonia has shown this season it has what it takes to compete in second division. The Saints have pushed finals aspirants Lower Plenty and Thomastown over the past fortnight and have been a tad unlucky to not add to their four wins for 2017.

Next year will be about beating the top sides in the division. The Saints look to have the firepower up forward, but will look to improve defensively, having conceded the third most points in the competition.

Lalor on the other hand has a strong midfield, led by Shane Jacobs, but need improvement in their arcs. The Bloods look like just scraping past 1000 points for the season and have the second-worst defence.

Jhye Baddeley-Kelly’s improvement has been a positive and he was again among his side’s best performers in last week’s home loss to North Heidelberg.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 FITZROY STARS This week we have an opportunity to turn the tables on Diamond Creek in what may be an entrée into September.

SENIORS: Last week was season-defining for both the Stars and Thomastown. The Stars needed to win to cement our spot in the four while the Bears needed a win with a tough draw ahead of them. The start was at best very messy with Thomo keeping us at bay, not able to kick a goal in the first term with a hefty wind. We struggled to get any sort of momentum and the Bears pounced on us. We were behind and our opposition smelt blood, they threw everything at us and we had to respond. With the season on the line our captain, Gordo, Ritchie and Hoody all stood up and got us ahead at the last break. With a wind on the back of our opposition, the Stars needed to dig deep and with the help of Wilkey, Kain and Mousy we got the job done. If we are to progress in September we will certainly need to smarten up and play the way only the Stars can.

RESERVES: Under the guidance of Captain Blood, the ressies had a positive start, showing what they

RESERVES: After a slow and scrappy start to the game, the boys came out in the second half firing on all cylinders. Chris Libertino played an outstanding second half of footy to really put the score on the board. Connor Pocock also had an outstanding day and we eventually run the game out with about a 100-point win UNDER-19: The under-19s had a solid win against Banyule in a fairly scrappy game on a small wet ground making it difficult for us to open up the game. With a finals position now sown up it is a matter of trying to go out there every week and play the brand of football with the intensity needed to give us our best chance 26

can achieve when everyone turns up. It was pleasing to see 29 turn up after a call out for help and the Stars were on fire with Ecca providing a terrific focal point up forward. The whole game was an arm wrestle with the lead changing numerous times right up until the last minutes of the game when Thomo surged forward and won by a couple of goals. Best for the Stars included Keithy, KB, Hayes, KT, Fin again and Swifty.

NETBALL: Had a tough night with the first side going down to West Preston-Lakeside 42-52, which leaves them fifth and relying on other results. The second side was totally outpointed by Heidelberg while the third side got a good win in against North Heidelberg 31-10 which leaves them fifth as well.

TOOL OF THE WEEK: Extraordinary effort from Chicken to sacrifice his Friday night ritual of beverages to play with the Stars on a Saturday. Only issue was Chicken forgot his socks and was unable to enter the field for the Stars. Preparation is everything Chicken and a few more moments to make sure you get everything right next time will pay dividends.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 LOWER PLENTY This week we host Panton Hill.

FOOTBLL: Winning the first of our crucial last three games is a big boost to the club, but it will need to continue this week with the game against Panton Hill.

The reserves had a bit of a shock loss on the weekend and will be looking to bounce back and carry some good form into finals, whilst the under-19s continue on their winning ways and have earned a week off.

TODAY: We would like welcome all Vietnam Vets and returned soldiers to the Lower Plenty Football Club.

Today, both the Lower Plenty FC and Panton Hill FC will be honouring and paying tribute to the Vietnam Veterans. Vietnam war memorabilia is on display so stay after the game for a drink in the rooms and be entertained with live music from Tim Jessos. We had a wonderful $5K Draw last Sunday with it proving to be a big success and congrats to our winners. The festivities continue after our last game next week, with an end of season BBQ and entertainment back at the clubrooms MEMBERSHIPS: Show your support for the Club.

PANTON HILL This week we travel to Lower Plenty.

SENIORS: The Hillers played host to one of their traditional rivals on Saturday, Diamond Creek. The two sides could not have had more contrasting seasons with the Demons seeming to have already booked themselves into a second semi final against North Heidelberg with just two rounds to go. The Hillers, barring a miracle on a scale never seen before, will be returning to Division 3 to regroup and rebuild.

Although the scoreline did blow out in the end this time around, it’s clear that, in just a matter of a few weeks, we can see the improvement developing in the side. Just over a month ago the Redbacks went down to Diamond Creek by just under 200 points however, this time around, our boys really took it to the opposition early, lost out to the classy Creekers mid-game but stood up well in the final term. Some good contributors around the ground this week but it’s been good to watch Damo in action every week showing some class on the field as well as off-field.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 NORTH HEIDELBERG Today all three sides are at home for the last time this season as we welcome Thomastown and also Banyule in the under-19s.

SENIORS: Did what was required against an undermanned Lalor. This afternoon we can expect a solid hit out against Thomastown, who still have an outside chance of finals so once again respect the opposition and come prepared.

DEVELOPMENT: A few players back from injury and with a few games to finals, clicking into gear nicely.

Spots up for grabs so regular training and for those not financial don’t be the one to miss out.

UNDER-19: So far and so close after leading for most of the game against second-placed South Morang. If only we could bottle the improvement and commitment back to the start of the year. Today a big chance today for a win so give it your best shot.

NETBALL: The ladies have had a great year with four of five sides destined for finals which is a tremendous effort. First of the finals is Team 4 this Friday night. Team 1: North Heidelberg bye. Team 2: North Heidelberg (19)

THOMASTOWN Thomastown hosted Fitzroy Stars at Main Street in what

was once more a crucial encounter for the senior side

SENIORS: Another close encounter with Fitzroy Stars.

We started the game really well and managed to keep our opponents goalless with the breeze in the opening quarter. At half time we just had our noses in front but unfortunately we couldn’t hold on in the second half and were overrun late to go down by 14 points. A brave effort which leaves us having to win our last two games to participate in finals.

RESERVES: For three and a half quarters we were in a dour battle with Fitzroy Stars. Many times throughout the contest, particularly early in the last quarter, we looked like throwing in the towel. To the boys’ credit, however, we dug deep and then played some of the best footy for the day in the last ten minutes, securing the win and our spot in the finals. A big two weeks now awaits in preparation for another finals campaign NETBALL: Thomastown 1’s six-week winning streak came to an end, going down by one to North Heidelberg. Thomastown 1 finish the season as minor premiers and take on North Heidelberg in the first semi 36

SENIORS: “One of the most entertaining games of footy I’ve ever seen”. This isn’t just my opinion but the opinion of the majority of people who were lucky enough to witness last week’s shootout at Para Rd. So many great performances with Eccles slotting a bag, Noofa bombing goals from 60 and Hoddo proving a handful up forward as well. Hoggy was in control in the ruck, allowing Ace and Benn Parker to rack up possies.

On the small ground the backline was holding up as well as it could with Taz doing everything in his power to limit the Bears scoring and Richo was relentless, intercepting marks left, right and centre. Well done to Chick on the magnificent performance. I’m sure it’ll still be talked about nine years from now.

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD: There was a chance that we could go into last week’s game against Lower a touch flat after the excellent win over Thommo but it was the exact opposite. Up and about from the opening

LALOR This week we head to Watsonia to take on the Saints.

FOOTBALL: Last week saw Lalor take on North Heidelberg. It wasn’t long before the small crowd got to see the ladder leaders show there superiority over the Bloods. Yet saying that, Lalor kept coming all day and without a ten-minute lapse in the third quarter where north banged on 13 goals, the game was played at a high standard.

THIS WEEK: This week we take on Watsonia in what will probably be our last opportunity to beat a side above us this year. The last two games against Watsonia they have jumped Lalor so the boys will be on their toes today.

AROUND THE TRAPS: Our Players Review was held last Saturday night and was a great success. A big well done to the young guns that took out the prize.

David Hutchinson booted ten goals and moved to third on the goal kicking table as his team trounced Reservoir by 99 points at Crispe Park. Hutchinson kicked nine against the Mustangs in their Round 2 encounter.

The win would come as a huge relief for coach Steve Power and new president Danny Whitacker.

Epping played its last game prior to its finals campaign – having the Round 18 bye – and came away a big 111-point winner over Kilmore at Epping Recreation Reserve.

Daniel Moore booted five majors, while Tom Hughes, Joel Dunmore and Leigh Judd acquitted themselves well further afield.

The Blues have been very impressive in the latter part of the year and should enter the finals with some confidence, having won eight of their past nine matches.

After trailing at the first break against Laurimar at Laurimar Reserve, Banyule responded with an 8.4 to 1.1 second term to lead the home team by 38 points at the main break.

But the Power won the second half in an encouraging display – finally going down by 34 points. Their fight back was particularly meritorious considering they were overrun by Reservoir in their previous game.

Spanning a large age gap, Lance Whitnall booted five for Laurimar, while under-17 player Jack Stewart grabbed his opportunity and played very well.

Banyule captain Scott Gumbleton slotted three goals in his return to the line-up, as did the talented Jacob Smith.

South Morang travelled to Heidelberg Park to tackle Heidelberg West. Given the Hawks had just lost to St Mary’s by 107 points, many would have expected the Lions to record a similar result.

But the Hawks were within seven points at the main break, before South Morang played a great third term and eventually ran out winners by 55 points.

Raafat Rachrache returned to form with seven majors.

Mitch Dickson, Tye Hall and Luke Shelton also stood out for the Lions.

The day was a much better one for the Hawks as they gave players opportunities to show what they can do.

“We challenged the players to bring effort and intent this week,” Heidelberg West coach Gary Cutler said.

“They did that in spades. They did us proud today.”

Playing at half back, the ever-improving Ryan Offer was best for the Hawks. Cutler was also pleased with the efforts of Samuel James – in his first senior game for the year – and Ayden Kelly. Both players were promoted from the reserves.

Round 18 action of Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 is highlighted by St Mary’s playing South Morang at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. South Morang will be holding a players reunion on the day.

The Burra will be fresh after coming off the bye and will be keen to do well in this encounter as they will play the Lions at some stage in the finals series if they keep on winning.

However, most tipsters are likely to stick with South Morang to continue its winning streak under Gary Hall – now standing at 11 wins. The Lions defeated the Burra by 38 points in their Round 9 encounter at Whatmough Park.

Heidelberg West will be the underdog as it plays next door neighbour Banyule at R.J. Brockwell Oval to round out its year. Regardless of the result, this will be the best season for the Hawks for many years.

These team last met in Round 8 at Heidelberg Park when the Bears prevailed by 25 points. After multiple team changes in recent weeks, it is expected Banyule may settle the line-up as finals approach.

Reservoir makes its first ever trip to J.J. Clancy Reserve to tackle Kilmore. Both sides would be keen to finish well after losing in Round 17 matches by a total of 210 points.

The Blues are likely to be warm favourites to win in front of their home crowd over the bottom-placed Mustangs.

Mernda will be looking for back-to-back wins when hosting Laurimar at Waterview Recreation Reserve.

The Demons began the year with two wins and would like to end the season the same way on their past players day.

But the Demons would be wary of the Power, who performed admirably against Banyule last week and also won the pair’s earlier outing in Round 6.

SENIORS: A great setup at Laurimar and some nice hospitality welcomed us for our first visit to Doreen and fortunately we were able to come away with the four points we were searching for along with no injuries that we were hoping for. Despite a wayward James Kroussoratis (who channelled his inner Buddy Franklin to kick 2.8), we were able to run away 34-point victors against a much improved Power outfit. Mick Italia was great in the middle along with the ever reliable Kieran Malone, whilst Mikey Edwards, Scott Gumbleton and Sean Downes were all dangerous up forward.

THE SEASON: Many people from both inside and outside the club have commented that we have had a good season this year, but I can’t help feeling that we have let an opportunity pass us by. Within the club we feel that we had a list of players that should play finals and the fact that we will not, leaves a bitter taste.

So many new players, new coaches, a massive injury list that I’ve never seen the likes of before, a gruelling pre-season, lots of factors that have combined to see us narrowly miss out on finals this year. But what it has created is a belief that we are not far off, if the little things go our way next season we anticipate being in the hunt. We have re-signed almost all of our players for next year and are addressing the areas of deficiency.

We welcome all players to our club and feel that there is something special on the horizon. So get on board.

a number of players missing it was still an important game with only one more game until finals start. We started the first well for the first half of the quarter but then we started to get a little bit ahead of ourselves and individual footy showed its head again, ending the quarter only a goal up. Things looked to be back on track in the second with the running and switching game really taking control. There was a number of really good patches of footy that showed what we are capable of. The second half was really pleasing to watch with ball movement looking brilliant with a smaller forward line really showing its class and the on ballers getting their fair share of it. One thing we can do a little better is to stop other teams getting soft and easy goals. Well done to McLenzie on kicking 10 and Wee Man kicking five. Best players were McKenzie, LJ, McDonald, Centofanti, Del and Kix. GO BEARS!

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 KILMORE This week we round out the season by hosting Reservoir.

SENIORS: We travelled to Epping with a very young side. Logan Cantwell and Brandon Kemp made their senior debuts. We were up against it from the start.

Epping played a very good brand of footy and we were unable to get our hands on the ball enough to try and control the game. Jax Kinnear was outstanding in the ruck in the second half and Pete DeSousa held Willitts to one goal. Dan Mathew continued his recent gold form and ,ick Marrett battled hard all day in the middle.

Injuries have taken their toll on us over the past few weeks and we lost three more this week. We move on to hosting Reservoir this week with an even younger side. It gives us the opportunity to get some senior experience into some kids we expect to be part of the future of our club.

RESERVOIR This week we travel to Kilmore for our final game of the season.

SENIORS: A very flat performance by the boys in a game we thought we’d be very competitive in.

Suffering two game ending injuries in the first quarter didn’t help our cause either. The Mernda boys moved the ball around with ease as we lacked pressure. At times, when we looked like we could come back, we made some unnecessary disciplinary acts which handed them goals on a platter. A very disappointing effort overall. Full credit to Mernda who wanted it more. Best: E. Black, L. Killey, R. Miller, T. Goodwin, J. Crowhurst, B. Mowlam.

RESERVES: Preparing for our last home game for the year we had a full squad to choose from for the first time in a few long weeks. Things looked promising at Thursday’s training session but come Saturday morning it all changed with late withdrawals and players just not turning up. Definitely not how we wanted to start off and the first quarter was like we just didn’t want to be there. After the first break the boys turned it around, shook off the poor start and really had a go for the rest of the game. While they didn’t get the win they put in and played out the game. HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 MERNDA Footy’s been a cruel game this season, but last week

was a good reminder it can give you a little bit of hope and a few laughs too.

SENIORS: With Reservoir at home, they targeted this game as a winnable one and it was pleasing to see our lads put in an excellent four-quarter performance. It helped having Hutchy back, as he marked everything that came his way and kicked a bag of 10. He finishes up this weekend but gee, he’s doing it with a bang, á la David Cloke in 1991. Anyway, the 99-point win means we have an average winning margin of 69 points this season, which more than second-placed Banyule. Stats can be so flawed sometimes. Big game today to finish off.

RESERVES: Speaking of records, anybody who watched our twos’ game would be aware Arcus set a new record for being run down from behind, surely. Anyway, the twos’ snared win number four with a good team effort without any real standout. Jack kicked a couple of goals and played well, while Shan played alright too. A nice opportunity this week to finish off well.

LAURIMAR This week we head to Mernda for the final game of the season.

LAST WEEK: Last week we welcomed Banyule to Laurimar for the first time and we were keen to atone for the first meeting and show that we are a better side than those scores indicated.

DEVELOPMENT: With the junior season completed we added six under-17 boys to the side which meant that along with three 19-year-olds we had half a side that could still be playing underage football. This added both pace and enthusiasm which gave us an air of expectation pre-game.

SENIOR MATCH: We started really well and our pressure was fantastic all over the ground. Banyule really only got away from us for 20 minutes in the second quarter and we won two quarters on the day.

The young fellas all acquitted themselves magnificently and showed that the future is bright as we ran a premiership hopeful to within five goals. It was probably our best four-quarter performance for the year and something to put hope into the supporter 46

NETBALL: Interesting time with one side preparing for finals, another playing finals, and another trying to finish off their season well. Mernda 1 got their 13th win of the year, beating South Morang 35-21. Mernda 2 was unable to beat Kilmore, going down 22-31, ending their season, but avoiding the wooden spoon. In the midst of their finals campaign, Mernda 3 kept their premiership dream alive, beating Thomastown 27-23. They now take on Bundoora for a spot in the Grand Final. Keep an eye on the NFL page for Mernda 3 and Mernda 1s fortunes and go over to support the girls!

ST MARY’S After coming off a bye we look forward to taking on

South Morang to finish the season off and concentrate on our finals campaign.

SENIORS: With Matt Patti leading the team for his 100th senior game the spirits were high against Heidelberg West. A poor first quarter against the wind made it hard at the start. Significant improvement in the second quarter saw us with a healthy lead. Our boys enjoyed a much needed win, ending the match with a 107-point advantage. Our leading kickers on the day were Patti 4, D. Castagnini 3, N. Dean 3, A. Lucci 3 and N. Daisley 2.

RESERVES: Started the game well and were able to score strongly and play solid defence against the wind in the second. With a 68-point lead going into the last quarter we felt as though we had given ourselves every chance to win the game. Defensively we held our own in the last quarter, not allowing the opportunity for West to score. A standout up forward was Toby O’Meara with 7 goals with the assistance of L. Potter 3, J. Sorani 2, C. Randell 2 to cement our top of the ladder position

UNDER 19: We look forward to taking on South! Two weeks we took on North Heidelberg in another tough game. Both teams had a slow start to the game, going into the second quarter even. We were able to get the lead with a couple of well placed goals cementing the lead and ending the fourth up by 53 points. Our leading goalers were A. De Girolamo 4, H. Chandler 3, J. NORTHPARK NFLW - Finals Review NORTHPARK NFLW REVIEW – SEMI FINALS Week two of the Northpark NFLW finals provided plenty of excitement, with an upset win and tight results at Preston City Oval.

In Division 1, Diamond Creek Women’s booked its place in the grand final, defeating Bendigo 3.6 (24) to 2.1 (13) in an upset second semi final victory.

After a tight tussle in the first quarter, the Creekers secured the first goal of the match in the final seconds to take an eight-point lead into quarter time.

The Creekers then scored the opening goal of the second term to stretch their lead out to 14-points, before long range set shot from Kerryn Harrington delivered the Thunder’s first goal and closed the margin to just seven points heading into half-time.

VU Western Spurs produced a strong final quarter, with two majors from Taylor Moss and an excellent running goal by Elizabeth Skinner ensuring their team got over the line and secured a place in the preliminary final.

Sabrin Nyawela and Kirralee Myers were exceptional for the Spurs, while Prudence Cordes and Giulia SgroRalph ended their seasons with great performances for the Mugars.

In Division 2, minor premier VU Western Spurs advanced into the grand final with a 3.10 (28) to 1.2 (8) win over West Preston-Lakeside in the second semi final.

Chloe Kalanj hit the scoreboard early for the Roosters as her side took a two-point lead into quarter time.

With the third quarter played between the arcs, no goals were scored and the Creekers took a nine-point lead into the final change.

After VU Western Spurs kicked seven behinds in a row, Sarah Osborne delivered the Spurs’ first goal and a seven-point half-time lead.

An Andrea Walsh goal brought Bendigo within three points halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Creekers responded with a goal of their own to stretch their lead out of the Thunder’s reach.

A Stacy Rigon goal in the third and then her second in the fourth term stretched the Spurs’ lead out to a match winning 20 points and handed them a second week off during the finals series.

Clara Fitzpatrick and Natalie Bire were brilliant for the Creekers, while Michelle Barkla and Kerryn Harrington were the best performers for the Thunder.

Madeleine Burgess and Danielle Mazzocca were outstanding for the Spurs, while Natarsha Bamblett and Jessica Bamblett were named best afield for the Roosters.

Bendigo will now face the VU Western Spurs in Sunday’s preliminary final at Preston City Oval, with the winner advancing to the grand final. The Thunder defeated the Spurs by 20 points in their last meeting in Round 9.

The VU Western Spurs moved into the third week of the finals following an 8.8 (56) to 4.7 (31) victory over Melbourne University in the first semi final on Sunday.

The Spurs got off to the perfect start with Emma Mackay kicking the ball off the ground on the goal line to send through the first major of the match. However, the Mugars responded superbly with the next two goals and took a 10-point lead into quarter time.

The Spurs made the most of their time spent kicking with the wind in the second term and hit back via Mackay’s second goal and a major to Nadine Lampard soon after – producing a 24-point turnaround to take a 14-point lead into half time.

The only goal of the third quarter went the Mugars’ way, closing the Spurs lead to a single goal at the final

West-Preston Lakeside will now match up against Darebin in the preliminary final. The Roosters defeated the Falcons by just 10 points in their recent qualifying final.

Darebin earned its way into the preliminary final with a hard-fought 2.7 (19) to 1.2 (8) victory over Kew in the first semi final.

In a low scoring affair, Kristin Stensholt scored the invaluable first goal of the match late in the second term, giving the Falcons an eight-point half time lead.

Kew hit back early in the third quarter via a great Tara Donnan goal and levelled the scores by the threequarter time break.

Darebin controlled much of the final quarter before a dribbling Stensholt goal sealed the match.

Taryn Escreet and Nikola Deiter were pivotal in getting the Falcons over the line, while Lily Barr and Rachel Ayres stood out for the Bears.

The Preston City Oval will host both the Division 1 and Division 2 preliminary finals on Sunday August 20.

Section 9 Second Semi Final Northcote Park 3 v St Martins Northcote Park 3 claimed victory over St Martin’s in the

Section 9 First Semi Final – Heat 4 v Heidelberg West 1 The Section 9 first semi final between Heat 4 and

Section 9 second semi final to advance straight through to the Section 9 grand final, with an 18-goal win.

Heidelberg West 1 had an abrupt conclusion after Heat GS Lois Gardiner went down with a back injury and emergency services were called.

A tight start to the game after a delayed opening to the match had Northcote Park up by one.

St Martin’s moved the ball around well but lacked accuracy as they missed a few goals, giving Northcote Park the opportunity to take a lead.

Only down by six goals St Martin’s made the first goal after GS Lauren Viglintti converted following a contact call on Northcote Park GK Alexandra Saunders.

St Martins look confident in the opening of the second quarter. Viglintti saved an errant ball from leaving court on a missed shot, and WA Georgia Rocca was there to back her up with a pass in to score.

Heat was fighting for a comeback after Heidelberg West came out strong in the first half, gaining a 10-goal lead.

Heidelberg West shooters GS Taylor and GA Montana Powell opened up with five goals apiece in the first quarter. Both players moved well to secure goals off their possession.

Defenders Jessica Taylor and Shania Shanahan created the chance for Heidelberg West to create a big lead, as they stopped Heat shooters from getting any close looks.

Northcote Park began to take back advantage and worked quickly up the court, edging further ahead with accurate shooting.

They forced Heat to pass into contested areas and blocked off their chances from making their way to their shooters – giving their side a strong advantage, one which they held throughout the remainder of the match.

Taking a decent lead in the third quarter Northcote Park showed no signs of slowing down, while St Martin’s struggled to make an impact on their scoreboard.

Heat did their best to bring back the deficit, taking control of play when they could and making successive efforts to their attacking third.

Although Northcote Park’s shooters were not shooting as accurately as they would have hoped, their continual ability to grab rebounds meant they had plenty of chances to make amends.

The final quarter proved no different from the rest of the game, as Northcote Park took hold of the netball and took charge of the game to storm into the grand final.

Keeping up their spirits, the shooters jumped for every rebound and took their time to put up shots. Their efforts however appeared futile as Heidelberg West took a 31-19 lead to begin the final quarter.

Heat started the last term well, moving the ball quickly into their shooters, while their defenders made numerous steals and rebounds before moving the ball down the court.

St Martins will make use of the double chance when it takes on Heidelberg West 1 in Friday night’s preliminary final.

Heidelberg West were still very accurate on their shots, allowing them to maintain their lead, before the early finish ensured they booked a spot against St Martin’s in next week’s Section 9 preliminary final.
