THE CUT: SENIOR STYLIST

For Teresa and her talented team at Villa Hairdressing, the NZARH Awards offered a fantastic opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone; to push the limits of their abilities, and above all to raise the profile of the hairstylists and their salon. It’s a win-win situation — for Teresa in particular! Winner of the NZARH The Colour award, after 26 years in the industry (and after many competitions) Teresa still finds the experience thrilling — and it gives her an extra measure of respect for competing stylists. ‘I take my hat off to anyone who has the guts to compete,’ says Teresa. ‘It takes real commitment: it’s great exposure for your salon, great for the team and great for your clients! I’m looking forward to the Supremes, but most of all, to bringing all of this experience back to my clients here in the salon.’ Teresa and her talented stylists have competed in a number of competitions for many years; and with yet another success under their belt, they’re looking forward to attending the Supremes in October.

With nine stylists from Three Hairdressing taking home 14 awards this year, business owners Hazel, Jemal and Katie are absolutely ecstatic with the recent NZARH competition results. The Maunu-based salon always encourages their stylists to compete, as they strongly believe that the benefits for both salon culture and personal growth are huge. Their clients are also benefiting from the extra focus and energy involved in competition prep; with their awardwinning stylists having practiced and trained for months leading up to the big day. ‘These competitions continue to raise our standard of hairdressing,’ explains co-owner Hazel Newman, ‘from pushing creativity and techniques through to team building and staff development, we see the NZARH Awards as a truly valuable opportunity!’ With 3 of their team — Misty, Vanessa and Hazel herself — continuing on to compete at the Supremes in October, and with Hazel having also won Oceanic Champion, the journey is far from over for this successful team: congratulations Three Hairdressing!

Northland Hair Company Kerikeri-based Northland Hair Company were also great contenders at the NZARH Northland Regional Hairdressing Awards, with senior stylist Laurel scooping up the prestigious Oceanic Hairdressing Masters Award for The Conversion. This event saw Laurel using all of her technical and creative ability to show the evolution from one style into another: showcasing versatility, fashionsense, out-of-the-box thinking and technical skill in one action-packed arena. Laurel thoroughly enjoyed the experience: not simply because of her success, but the entire process of preparation, training, experimenting, practicing and competing left her feeling invigorated and re-inspired. ‘It’s all about striving for excellence,’ says Laurel of the NZARH Regional Awards. ‘Perfecting your skills, improving your cutting, your colouring, and your hair-up skills. It keeps us looking at what’s current in the fashion world, and in turn it offers our clients the absolute latest in technique and fashion!’ Competing at the Oceanics will offer Laurel the opportunity to showcase her talents on a trans-tasman stage, and while bringing fantastic exposure for Northland Hair Company, and potentially another award to add to the shelf.

Strand Salon For intermediate stylist Emily Openshaw, the fantastic salon culture and supportive atmosphere at the Strand Salon played a large part in enabling her to take home the NZARH Next Generation award for The Style. Emily also won 4th place at the recent Auckland competitions; a huge achievement for this young up-and-coming stylist. As Emily is quick to point out, however, it was the 4 months of preparation, the endless hours of coaching and support from her boss and mentor Marilyn, and the patient encouragement from her salon team that really boosted her to the top. ‘I’m just so grateful to Marilyn, the Strand Salon stylists and our clients, and everyone who has been involved in this part of my life,’ says Emily. ‘I am so proud of this achievement — I have learned so much; it has inspired me and given me such a confidence boost!’ With the Supremes coming up in October, Emily has another run of late nights ahead of her: luckily she knows her supportive salon will be right behind her.
