he Great Hall at Stormont recently set the scene for three of Northern Ireland’s most creative and award-winning talents – Geraldine Connon fashion designer with over 30 years experience in the industry, awardwinning hairdresser Shane Bennett and sought after make-up artist Oonagh Boman. They combined their experience to present their signature collections in the form of a very stylish fashion show which was sponsored by Phoenix Gas with all proceeds raised from the show going to Energy for Children Charitable Trust, which is administered by Phoenix on behalf of the gas industry.

Acting Up Actress Caroline Curran has brought the character Maggie Muff to life and it seems we can’t get enough of this character, and in turn, Caroline’s engaging stage presence.

ailing from East Belfast, Caroline originally worked as a stage manager after leaving university, but took the decision to completely step away from this behind the scenes roll and concentrate on her passion for acting.

‘About five years ago now I decided to focus on my acting because when I was going to acting auditions I was being asked to stage manage the show instead!’ explains Caroline.

So I had to give that up for people to see me as a serious actress. I was lucky enough to be spotted by (theatre director) Patricia Downey while doing open auditions at the Lyric Theatre and she has helped me get into lots of shows, so it’s all gone from there.

Although Caroline has been acting for a number of years now, people have probably really started to recognise her more since taking on the role of Maggie Muff in 50 Shades of Red, White and Blue

by Leesa Harker, whose Facebook postings gained momentum, and what was a bit of fun became a Belfast-based spoof of Fifty Shades of Grey. Very soon it went viral and had 29,000 followers!

Produced by Martin Lynch and Joe Rea, 50 Shades of Red, White and Blue tells the story of loveable Maggie Muff and her search for love, featuring laughout-loud characters such as big Sally Ann, Wee Greener Sinead and of course, the mysterious Mr Red White and Blue himself.

‘When I got a phone call from Martin Lynch’s production company to read the script, I didn’t know much about it the whole Fifty Shades of Red, White and Blue phenomenon! So, they gave me the story to read, I took it home and thought it was hilarious. They asked me if I had a problem with the language which I didn’t and they offered me the part.

‘I play 11 different roles in 50 Shades and I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the success of this play. From the first performance it was very apparent that this was something special as people battled through snowfall to take their seats at The MAC where it was first shown, and then later when we took to the stage at The Grand Opera House.’

When Dirty Dancing in the Shebeen followed, Caroline got to reprise her role as Maggie Muff in another hilarious Belfastbased spoof of every women’s favourite movie Dirty Dancing.

‘In both of these plays, Maggie demonstrates her will and determination.

Maggie is a brave woman and I love her sincerity – she would do anything for anyone. Maggie projects confidence, but she is vulnerable underneath. I love playing her and base her on myself and my best friend – who won’t mind me saying this as I’ve

already told her!

‘To this day, every single time I take on the character of Maggie Muff in 50 Shades of Red White and Blue or Dirty Dancing in the Shebeen, it feels like the first time all over again. No words can describe it.’

With sell-out shows under her belt, Caroline is certainly noticing more doors opening for her which is helping to cement her own confidence and belief in her acting ability.

‘Making the transition from stage manager to actress hasn’t been easy. I have had my doubts about my ability and whether I can cut it as an actress, but my confidence and self-belief has taken a real boost thanks to Maggie Muff!’

While Caroline is widely recognised for her role as Maggie Muff, she can turn her hand to a diverse range of characters from light and comedic to more tragic and dramatic.

‘I have been involved in a lot of different issue based plays. For example, Patricia Downey’s Diablo is a gritty play which tackles the issue of human trafficking.

When it debuted at The Lyric back in 2012 I played a madam called Alana and had to take on some very graphic scenes. In Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History a one-woman show also written by Patricia Downey, which sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and The Lyric, I play Marilyn Monroe, who famously quoted the play’s title, as well as other notorious ladies such as Mo Mowlam.’

Caroline will be starring alongside Marty Maguire and Ciaran Nolan in Martin Lynch’s new production Crazy, which is a new comedy by Brenda Murphy about American singer Patsy Cline. The play opens on 26th May in The MAC and runs through until 14th June.

‘I’m finally getting some time off in

February/March after a recent run at The Mac of Dirty Dancing in the Shebeen before starting rehearsals for Crazy. When I do get time off I like to spend it with friends and family. I also like to relax by watching serial killer documentaries! Don’t ask – but I like to watch a bit of devastation!’

So what lies ahead for Caroline in the future? ‘I’d love to try out for TV and film roles as well as other theatre work. I’d love to be in the The Fall and show that I can play a serious role as well as turning my hand to comedy. I also hope to turn my hand to writing a play this year along with actress Julie Maxwell, so who knows what the future holds, but as long as I continue to wake up every day and love going to my job, then I’ll be happy.’

JW Anderson for Loewe Northern Ireland born fashion designer JW Anderson, creative director of LVMH-owned house Loewe, has impressed the fash pack with his first collection for S/S15.

As he said himself, ‘I think Loewe had become heavy, and I wanted it to be lightened up. I wanted it to feel fresher, sharper.’ He has certainly achieved his goals and we look forward to seeing the brand grow under his guidance.

How to Dress for Any Occasion Here are a few rules of thumb to help you look your best for any event...

In life, the best path to take is your own – the path that fits you. The same goes for how you present yourself to others. Whatever the occassion you are dressing for, wear what suits you, not what you saw that actress wore down the red carpet - unless it flatters you, too!

Fashion, once understood, is actually freedom.

The chicest women know their bodies, and this gives them priceless confidence in themselves. So, accentuate the positive - say you have a wider hip or thigh, wear something that’s either A-line or cut looser there. Think about showing off a bit of skin on the shoulder to compensate. If you’re bigger on the bottom, most likely you’re smaller on the top.

Accentuate above the waist, and keep it simple and not too tight on the down-low. Or, if you are narrow in the hip and leg, you probably carry your extra bits in the stomach or bust, so go for a slim-fit skirt or looser shift or maxi dress.

Don’t be afraid of stretchy fabrics just because you have a bust. These may seem like a no-no, but can call all the right attention to the smallness of the waist. Those who tend go for a looser fit and try to conceal the bust with flowing layers actually make themselves look larger everywhere.

Go to a dressmaker! This is the secret weapon of well dressed women. This investment ensures that your clothes fit you properly, essentially turning your wardrobe into something closer to couture. The dressmaker can also help you revive items that don’t fit as they used to (by taking them in or letting them out) or that have worn out, so a dress worn to a wedding five years ago can always make a reappearance looking as good as it did back then.

Get support! Wear a good fitting bra and make sure there are no panty lines! This right underwear can make a massive difference to the fit of your clothes, especially unforgiving occasional dresses.

Accessorise! Always add good quality shoes, choosing a pair that is gentle on your feet and does not cut your leg length - unless you’re 6 feet tall and all leg. The right handbag is important, too. There is nothing worse than attending a smart, occasional event with your sloppy weekend bag that looks great with your jeans, but totally ruins the look of everything you’ve worked so hard to pull together.

Working within the Citi In this issue, NW talks to Lauren Geddis about her role with Citi.

L

auren Geddis works as a managing lawyer within the Legal department at Citi, which is a global bank and the only one with a presence in Northern Ireland. As Lauren explains, ‘My team are primarily involved in the negotiation of trading contracts with clients who are based in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

These contracts once executed, allow the bank to trade over the counter derivatives with our clients.

‘A typical day can involve conference calls with business or legal colleagues in London or New York to discuss matters relating to clients, our policies or how to deal with a change in regulation. I would generally also have several emails to read and answer, ranging from advice on certain legal points to allocating out some work.

I could be having a one to one with a member of my team to discuss how they are doing or a meeting with the whole team to talk through what’s on the horizon etc.

Generally I prefer to keep my calendar as free as possible so that I can deal with an urgent matter as and when it arises.’

❝I prefer to consider the lows of my job simply as challenges. They say that going through hardships is the best way to achieve personal development. In seven years, I can honestly say that I have learned the most from the challenging times.❞ Lauren graduated with a Law degree from Queen’s in 2005 and then worked in the financial services industry selling general insurance. ‘Whilst working I studied for and passed the New York Bar exams. This meant I was able to swear in as a NY Attorney in January 2007.

Shortly after that in the summer an advert was placed in the Belfast Telegraph which seemed perfect for me! A US bank was opening up a Legal department in Belfast and they needed lawyers and law graduates.

I jumped at the chance, applied for the job, went through an interview assessment centre and subsequently was offered the job to work for Citi as a negotiator. At only 23 and a new graduate, I was given fantastic training and within six months I managed to get a promotion to head up a sub-team of six negotiators. From there I haven’t really looked back, I achieved two further promotions and now help to manage a wider team of nearly 40 people.

‘For me the highs of my job are the pace, the pressure and sometimes just trying to achieve the impossible. There is always a deadline, a contract that needs signed, a project that simply has to be done for regulatory reasons or a meeting that needs attended. No two days are the same for me and that’s the way I like it. I’m suited to the environment, I get to use my brain and I feel stretched. The training and support Citi offers is second to none and I may be slightly biased but the people who work here are simply tops. I know it’s hard to believe that an organisation of 250,000 employees could all work together to achieve great things but that’s what happens every day and I’m proud to be a part of it.

‘As for ‘lows’ I prefer to consider the lows of my job simply as challenges. They say that going through hardships is the best way to achieve personal development. Besides if I wasn’t challenged, I’d be bored. That’s why I’m still here!

‘I believe my greatest achievement is that I have had the opportunity to be involved in other roles in the organisation outside of my day job. I chair our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) committee and that role is extremely rewarding. The committee works with the local community through arranging hundreds of staff to volunteer each year, raise thousands for charity and participate in green initiatives. There is no greater feeling of satisfaction than looking back over a year and realising that you were part of a very big team effort to make a positive impact in the local community.’

So how does Lauren juggle her job and home life? ‘I think I achieve this through working as efficiently as I can when I’m in work and coming in a little earlier. This ensures that I have time to get home at a decent hour and have some down time to recharge for the next day and spend time with family and friends. I also try to encourage this attitude within my team that we want people to excel at work. In order to do that they need to rest and that means not sitting at a computer to all hours of the night. Citi fully supports a work life balance and it is something we work hard to encourage.

At the weekends I like to unwind by taking a walk around the countryside and to just slow down and breathe it all in. A coffee and a chat with friends is always a great way to relax. I always find laughter really is the best medicine.’

As for dressing for the office, Lauren tells us that she has always kept a wardrobe specifically for work. ‘I even have a few ‘power’ suits, complete with shoulder pads which I may wear dependent on what meetings I need to go to that day. I do feel that presentation is important in a work environment. It makes it easier for people to take you seriously and I always feel more confident when I’m in business dress. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that perceptions are key. If you are great at something, you simply can’t rely on that. You have to also present yourself and behave in a way that is appropriate in order to truly be recognised for your contributions.’

How to Negotiate a Pay Rise The art of salary negotiation is a key career skill. Here are a few pointers to help you to get the salary increase you deserve. in. Draw attention to quantifiable data, such as figures and timeframes. Go over your track record in producing results and other stages of your work history that demonstrate your value. Be sure to point the decision-makers towards recommendations from colleagues and any supporting documentation. Invite them to go and talk to Jane in marketing, for example, who will tell them about the work you’ve done for her.

Be ready for discussion and negotiation

Timing is everything

Asking for a raise can be disruptive for employers, so it’s essential you get your timing right. Can you dovetail your request with an annual performance review? If you’re company doesn’t do this, then you will have to make time to address the issue rather than becoming resentful over a salary that isn’t meeting your expectations.

Research your market value

Get an idea of what you should be asking for by speaking to people doing similar roles to you within your company, in the same sector and in similar organisations.

Talk to people you know well so that you’re comfortable asking how much they currently get paid and how much they’re planning to ask for at their next review.

Know what you’re asking for

Begin with the end in mind. Be clear about why is this is so important to you and your rationale behind it. Why does this have to be done now? Where does your salary fit into overall career trajectory? Make the effort to understand the company’s process for making pay awards. Find out how it

works, who is involved and the power and influences regarding the decision.

Talk to your boss

Where is your boss is likely to fit into this process? They will need to be involved at some point, even if they don’t have the power or influence to make the final decision. It’s useful to know what they will do for you, just as much as knowing what they might need from you.

Build a business case

You’re going to need a watertight business case and evidence of your skills. Record specific things you did and significant moments and events. Include examples of your work and projects you were on, how you work with different teams and your relationships with key people. You need to show that you’ve been working well on tasks that are beyond what everyone else is doing.

Present your case

When presenting your business case to whoever you’re negotiating with, highlight the successful projects you’ve been involved

Be clear with yourself on what your boundaries are. How much scope for flexibility are you going to allow? What are you willing to accept or not accept?

There may be different elements of your pay package that could be interchangeable or traded-off. Identify what these are so that you know what your options are. Your employer will try and hold you at the lowest possible rate, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t create a package that will work well for you, just be clear about what you want and why you deserve it.

Use the power of silence

Don’t be tempted into speaking or committing yourself to an offer too early.

Negotiation is about pacing. An appropriate response to the first offer might be, ‘Thanks for that, I’m going get to back to you on it’.

Take time when considering the offer

Each situation is different and you may need more or less time to consider the offer depending on how close it is to what you want and what the other options may be.

If you’re asked how long you need to think the offer over, say you’ll let them know that day or that you’ll sleep on it, depending on how much time you need.

Tie it up

If you get an offer that’s not what you wanted you can easily say it’s close enough, or it isn’t close enough. Whether you get what you want or not, you need to close the discussion. Whatever’s happened, if you’re happy to stay, then stay. If you’re not happy to stay, then you’ll have to consider leaving.

Address your Work/Life Balance in 2015 Want to be happier at work? Do you want to have the time to enjoy the fruits of your labour?

Then you need to strike a healthy balance between the amount of time your work and the amount of time you have to yourself to spend with friends and family.

D

on’t underestimate the importance of worklife balance. The vast majority of people can’t really effectively work 60, 70 and more hours per week and can very likely accomplish just as much with a balanced lifestyle in a more efficient and sustainable manner.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can work unsustainable hours without sacrificing something very important, whether it’s family, health, free time or indeed, the quality of your work. Here are seven ways to achieve better work-life balance in 2015.

1. Enjoy the little things

Having a healthy work-life balance involves appreciation of two things: work and life.

This seems like a no-brainer, right? You can enjoy things at work to make the week move along nicely. For example, your regular morning coffee to get the day off to good start or a light-hearted lunch enjoyed in the company of your colleagues or a quick, socialble dinner after work to break up the week.

2. Manage your time well at work

When we’re burning both ends of the wick, we tend to forget why we started some tasks in the first place. It’s important to practice good time management and ensure you take time away from work to rest and re-energise. We can often get caught up in low-priority ‘easy’ tasks, and using our best hours for the most important tasks does help. Taking some time to step back and regroup your thoughts can help with time management, a key component in achieving work-life balance.

3. Know when to stop

There’s always going to be work to do.

There’s always going to be a phone call to make, a client to help, a project to

perfect. While many nine to fivers may pride themselves on working until 8 or 9pm, it ends up being pretty pointless in the end, much less a stride toward worklife balance. When you get to the point of feeling overwhelmed, that’s a sign that you may need to re-evaluate how much you’re working compared to the quality of work being paid for. Many employees are overworking for their companies or clients, so take appropriate chunks of work to tackle each day rather than taking on a laundry list of endless tasks.

4. Acknowledge your achievements

We tend to focus on what doesn’t get finished or things that fall through the cracks. Don’t put all your attention on the bad. Focus on what you do well, the goals you have accomplished, the clients you have pleased. Likewise, praise those around you for their achievements, which is a great way to boost employee morale! Take pride in your work. Let your boss know your achievements. Those are the things that matter. Remember, no one is perfect.

5. Switch off outside of working hours

This concept may not always be possible, but any effort to disconnect from the office while you’re away can help with work-life balance. We live in a connected world, yes, but there’s also a great tool in this tech-savvy world: it’s called ‘settings’.

So if that means uninstalling your email

app or stopping notifications from your smartphone, or resisting the urge to answer client calls after a certain time, do so. If you answer phone calls or email after hours then you set up a precedent and will always be expected to do so.

6. Use your holidays

This may also seem like a no-brainer. But you’d be surprised how many people fail to take some quality time away from work to unwind and de-stress. Taking time away from work is just as essential as time management because it keeps you sharp. No one can go at full speed indefinitely. Taking adequate stretches of leave and the odd long weekend is essential to staying energised and focused.

7. Get with the times

The times are certainly changing. Employees are now seeing the benefit of work-life balance, and companies are making great strides to help them get there. In the UK, employees now have the right to request to adjust their schedules according to their needs. This could include options to work remotely, stagger hours to avoid high-traffic times, and the like.

At the end of the day, a job is a job.

We can love our jobs or be dissatisfied (hopefully the former), but in the end it’s still just a job. So, this year do what makes you happy and aim to achieve a balance that works for you.

Have you always been interested in fashion?

It wasn’t until I left Cork after school and travelled to Paris to learn French that my interest in fashion was sparked. Living in Paris for a year certainly left it’s mark. Let’s just say I left in jeans and ankle boots and returned in high heels! On my return to Ireland at the age of 19 I was passionate to learn all I could about the fashion industry and I moved to Dublin to take up a position at the Irish Fashion Design Centre working alongside Michelle Kavanagh, Marie Donnelly and Nicky Creedon, who were all a huge inspiration.

What path did you take to your current position?

I didn’t have definite plan in mind. I am fortunate to have such an aspirational job and I certainly never dared to imagine that one day I would be Fashion Director at Brown Thomas. After ten years working as the Assistant Manager at the Irish Fashion Design Centre, I moved to Brown Thomas in the role of Head of Fashion, where I spent ten years, prior to being appointed as Fashion Director, carrying on the good work of Cecily McMenamin before me.

What is your typical day?

I spend roughly six months of the year travelling between New York, London, Milan and Paris. When I’m in Ireland, I’m based at our Dublin buying office, where I will be at my desk for 8am and once I’ve had a chance to check emails and go over the plan for the day ahead, I’ll pop into the store to meet with the team there. I’m lucky enough to have a PA to help me plan my

diary and make travel arrangements which frees me up from some admin to deal with other business matters. My day will be taken up with meetings with other members of management and the fashion buyers, who I work closely with on a daily basis to ensure that all of our fashion labels work within the overall Brown Thomas brand. All of our brands have to work commercially and we have to constantly revaluate how all brands are performing across the group portfolio.

It can be challenging working with so many brands and making decisions that are in everyone’s best interests.

If you could change one thing about your career what would it be?

What advice would you have for others looking to take up a career in fashion?

When you do have time off how do you like to spend it?

The fashion industry is a fast one so it’s important to stay on top of everything and be quick off the mark. Therefore, it’s important to have a lot of passion, energy, confidence and determination. Be formidable, but pleasant and mannerly at the same time!

What have been your proudest career achievements to date?

Paul O’Connor and I were part of the team revamping the whole of the first floor. We started planning it four years ago, which during the height of the recession was no mean feat and to see it completed is a great feeling. I’m also very proud of the balance of brands in our womenswear at present.

From high end fashion designers such as Victoria Beckham and Alaia to our French labels including, Maje and The Kooples, a brand which had no intention of coming to Ireland, but we managed to secure for Brown Thomas.

While I love what I do, it’s a busy job and I have limited free time. I’m up from 5.30am every morning and home late – or not home at all when I’m travelling. As mum to my 12-year-old daughter, when I’m not working I’m spending time as her chauffeur, and while I love having time with her, it means I don’t ever get too much time to myself. Once a week I try and take my lunch hour to meet up with a friend. I have a lot of good friends and it’s important for me to make time for them.

One of the perks of my job has to be the travel, which I love, and as a family, my husband, daughter and I, like to travel to Europe in the summer. We spend two weeks away in June and another week in August. This time is precious to me. I work so hard all year long that I am very insistent when it comes to this time off with my family. When I do have the time in the future I’d love to travel further afield to countries like Australia, South America and South Africa.

Finally, what labels would you recommend?

Victoria Beckham is a must-have label and Alaia is popular with the Brown Thomas customer. Celine’s ready-to-wear collection certainly stands out as does Acne, Kenzo and Isabel Marant Étoile. Tom Ford is a fantastic accessory brand and Irish designers Lucy Nagle, Helen Cody and Louise Kennedy always impress.

Finding Love on theTyroneSilverbirch Dance Floor Couple Celebrate 56 Years Together

W

ith Valentine’s Day on the horizon, Etta and David Campbell’s heartwarming story of how they found love on the dance floor of Silverbirch Hotel 56 years ago is sure to brighten your day.

Silverbirch Hotel’s General Manager, Carla Hosie was busy showcasing the hotel at the Holiday World Show in Belfast’s Kings Hall. What happened next really made her day! Etta and David Campbell who are avid Motor home travellers, spotted Silverbirch Hotel’s stand and recalled their fond memories of the hotel to Carla.

The Tyrone couple first met on the popular dance floor of Silverbirch Hotel, back in 1958 and have been together ever since. Carla and the team at Silverbirch where truly touched to meet the wonderful couple and learn about how their romance blossomed.

Fifty six years later Etta, fondly recounts how she went to a ‘Dance’ at Silverbirch Hotel with her eldest sister Ruth in October 1958. The Hotel was renowned for attracting some of the best acts in the country and on that particular night the iconic Dave Glover Show band was performing.

A native of Omagh, Etta (nee Ballantine) was familiar with Silverbirch Hotel through her neighbours, the Trainer family who were involved with the Hotel at that time.

Etta recalled how David had asked her to dance and that their romance grew from that very moment onwards. “He came to the dance with another girl, but came home with me” laughed Etta as she shared their story; fate had brought them together, as in fact David had brought another local lady to the dance.

From that night onwards David only had eyes for Etta and they married 3 years later on Boxing Day 1961. Throughout

their courtship and marriage David and Etta have returned to Silverbirch Hotel many times throughout the years. David and Etta where blessed with 4 children and have 8 grandchildren.

The vibrant Tyrone couple celebrated their Golden Wedding (50th) anniversary at Silverbirch Hotel in 2000, a fitting tribute to the place where they first met. Etta and David have lived in Newtownstewart for most of their married life, but still love to visit Silverbirch Hotel whenever they are in Omagh.

Rock the Ages NW chats with Jo Malone's Master Perfumer, Christine Nagel...

What was the brief and concept behind the 'Rock the Ages' collection?

The idea was to capture the atmosphere of some of Britain’s most defining eras; periods of British history so unique that each one has its own globally recognised ambience of drama and character. We wanted to encapsulate these ages in scent, creating a collection that would playfully appeal to the imagination.

Which era captivated you the most? Why?

The Edwardian era really caught my imagination. In the history of perfumery, it was during this time that the fougère fragrance family was created. The Creative Studio asked me to revisit this and give it a new modernity. I remember being in a taxi in Tokyo when I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to do. The fragrance came very naturally to me and there were very few modifications. I think I was particularly inspired by the idea of garden parties, Edwardian dandies and their crisp suits, it just resonated with me.

Please tell me about each scent – its story and its composition and highlight any unexpected notes.

Tudor Rose & Amber was inspired by the dark grandeur of the Tudor age, its dramatic battles and feuding. We centered the fragrance on the dark side of the rose, using a Damask rose and a Tudor rose with a metallic edge evoking the Tudor sword. These roses were then reinforced with the sensual woody warmth of amber and the insolence of the spicy clove.

Lily of the Valley & Ivy captures the grace of the Georgian age. Lily of the Valley on its own would have been a simple and traditional pretty floral. To give it a distinct Jo Malone London twist we added the scent of green ivy and fruity cassis. These contrasted with the delicacy of the Lily of the Valley for something more interesting and modern.

Pomegranate Noir is one of Jo Malone London’s most-loved scents. We felt it perfectly embodied the Victorian age with a combination of fruity and rich pomegranate and central woody notes of guaiacwood and patchouli. These recalled the wooden paneling of Victorian interiors.

Geranium & Verbena is clean and herbaceous; it makes me think of perfectly

dressed figures in an abundant summer garden. A typical fougère is made with several ingredients, including lavender. In this scent we replaced the lavender with verbena for a more modern interpretation.

Birch & Black Pepper was inspired by punk; bands like The Clash, the rebellious side of Britain. In each collection we have one particularly unusual fragrance and in Rock the Ages this was definitely it. From smoky silver birch to spicy black pepper, from cool, fresh cardamom to resinous gurjum, it is a scent of dramatic contrasts.

Is there one ingredient from the collection that was most interesting to work with?

In Birch & Black Pepper we used an ink accord, inspired by the ink of a tattoo. Ink is quite a complex note and we wanted to have both the perfect scent and something to conjure the image of Britain today. It is clean and distinct with an accent of amber, giving the fragrance a magnetic presence.

How did you capture the mood of each era through scent?

For each scent we took inspiration from everything from architecture, to fashion, music, literature and even social change during that time. Each scent has an overall feel of the age as well as specific ingredients that tell a story. For example, Lily of the Valley & Ivy is captivating and ethereal, qualities that we immediately associated with that era. In a more literal sense, the powdered wigs of the Georgian age made us want to create a soft and delicate scent with Lily of the Valley. And the inspiration behind green ivy was the façade of a Georgian house.

Is there one that was more challenging than another?

Tudor Rose & Amber was particularly challenging. The brief for this fragrance was to show the dark side of the rose representing the drama of the era. In perfumery the rose has so many different characters from fresh and green to light and romantic or spicy and honeyed. I

had to try many different rose combinations to bring out the dark side. I settled on the Damask rose and a Tudor rose accord in the end. The Tudor rose has a metallic note to represent the bloody Tudor sword.

Which would you wear?

Definitely Geranium & Verbena as it is the scent that combines the best with the rest of the collection. For me it would be the core choice and then I would layer it with the others according to my mood or the occasion.

What research did you do and were there any characters or tales you found particularly interesting?

The Creative Studio sent me books and films as well as a presentation on each era.

Everything from Christopher Marlowe’s writing to Downton Abbey. They were also particularly interested in quirky anecdotes from each age. For instance in Tudor times they used pomanders with cloves to cover the stench of the street. Cloves became an ingredient we definitely wanted to incorporate in Tudor Rose & Amber.

I get lots of first-time clients coming to see me, complaining they can’t do anything with their hair. Every day is a bad hair day. They want me to fix it. They want me to fix it forever. But the first step isn’t a great haircut. Sure, it’s important, but that comes later. The first hurdle is changing the mindset. How can you have great hair if you don’t love your hair to begin with? And I mean your actual hair, not just your style.

No hair type is impossible to style beautifully. Treat it well, give it regular attention, play with it and invest in it and you’ll grow to love the hair you have rather than looking over your shoulder at every ponytail that passes by.

Love me tender

Working with models and actors, I often have to deal with hair that has serious challenges. It can be brittle, weak, stretchy, breaking, all those problems associated with over-processed hair. Good hair begins with good condition so I advise my clients to use the best shampoo they can afford and always, always condition. For those whose hair is under strain from heat styling or colour, extra conditioning in the form of regular deep treatments, in salon or at home, is essential.

Shake it up

There’s nothing like the same old, same old for turning any relationship stale. I love clients who will shake it up every now and again, taking it short, growing it long, changing the shape. Thinking you’ve found the perfect style and sticking with it for a decade is a romance-killer and will put you on a roller-coaster towards a loveless partnership. Instead, look on your cut as an evolution, altering with every appointment. Shake it up between visits by styling it different ways – pinning it up, parting it on different sides, roughing it up with a texturiser; it’s easy to vary your look using small details.

Date-nights

Feeling a bit jaded between hair appointments is easily remedied by lavishing some attention on your hair with a professional blow dry.

Quick and affordable, it’s the perfect way to ease the strains in your relationship and rekindle that passion you had as you left the salon after your latest haircut.

hat if you discovered that the best place to begin your personal pursuit of happiness is at the end of your fork? Well, prepare to polish your silverware. Emerging research from the fields of neuroscience and nutrition shows that by changing what you eat, you can stabilise your mood, improve your focus, and boost your brain health, all while trimming your tummy.

However, the ‘happiness diet’ is not all carrot sticks and raw broccoli. It includes foods that are rich in nutrients like vitamins A, B12, D, and E, and folate, iodine, magnesium, calcium, iron, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids – your essential elements of happiness.

Food is directly linked to three areas of brain function that create your ‘happiness ability.’ The first is your capacity to focus, think, plan, and remember (‘foods for thought’). The second is emotional regulation (‘foods for good mood’). And

third are foods

that give you the ability to power through a deadline and control anxiety (‘foods for energy’).

Foods for Thought

An egg is a nutritional powerhouse. It contains vitamin B12, which is crucial for nerve cells, folate to keep our brain’s neurotransmitter factories humming, iodine which is essential for good thyroid function and vitamin D. When it comes to what you spread on your toast, butter is brain food. It has a long list of nutrients that are not found in most vegetable oils, including vitamin A (which promotes the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine that are key players in mood and memory), along with vitamins D and B12. Butter from grass-fed cows is even healthier.

It contains omega-3 fatty acids, which cool inflammation and promote the growth of new brain connections. It also delivers higher levels of a special fat called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, which increases blood flow to the brain, extends the life of brain cells, and counteracts the effects of the stress hormone cortisol.

Yes, red meat is brain food. It contains heme iron, which is the most absorbable form. The brain needs a constant flow of oxygen, and that depends on eating enough iron for red blood cells. Red meat is also a top source of vitamin B12, and it’s one of the best sources of zinc, which research suggests improves academic performance.

And if you stick with grass fed, you’ll also get 300 to 500 per cent more CLA than with conventional beef!

The densest source of omega-3 fatty acids is cold-water fatty fish, and anchovies have twice as much as tuna. Pregnant women who eat more omega-3s have children with higher IQs. Anchovies are healthier than tuna for another reason too: They’re low on the food chain, so they’re often virtually free of brain-damaging mercury.

Foods for Energy

Dark, leafy vegetables are among the most nutrient-dense foods we eat. In fact, folate, which protects us from depression,

As a kid, you were probably told a thousand times what a great source of calcium milk is, but you probably weren’t told that greens also contain calcium. It triggers the release of neurotransmitters every time a neuron fires.

Two cups of arugula have just ten calories but contain six per cent of your daily need for calcium, plus two other essential elements of happiness, folate and fibre.

The latter is important for maintaining a healthy gut, which is crucial for the proper absorption of other nutrients. Diets low in fibre have been linked to depression and increased risk of suicide. And arugula’s deep green colour indicates the presence of yet another of our top happiness nutrients, magnesium.

Caffeine causes an increase in dopamine, which is how it boosts your confidence, focus, and mood. In addition to its stimulating properties, a cup of coffee has more antioxidants than a glass of grape juice or a serving of spinach and it contains two phytonutrients, norharman and harman, which function like a class of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors. People who drink a few cups of coffee daily have a decreased risk of brain disorders such as depression and dementia.

You can fit one walnut in the palm of your hand, yet it has all the building blocks to grow into a tree that’s nearly as wide as a school bus and as tall as a ten-storey building. Nuts contain a wealth of trace minerals, macronutrients, and vitamins, including magnesium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, calcium, omega3s, vitamin E, and folate and other B vitamins – they’re sort of like multivitamins, except designed by nature. The various forms of vitamin E work to relieve brain inflammation and protect neurons. Patients with major depression often have low levels of vitamin E in their blood.

Because we confuse the pure food with the processed version, potatoes have a bad rep. A potato skin has just as many phytonutrients as broccoli especially if you eat the more colourful varieties. Unusual nutrients found in potatoes, known as kukoamines, can lower blood pressure, which protects the brain. But potatoes are also loaded with essential elements of happiness such as folate and iodine. Iodine is critical for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, which in turn is a mood regulator. One of the first things a psychiatrist checks when evaluating someone suffering from depression is the thyroid. Iodine deficiency is also the

most common cause of preventable brain damage in the world.

Foods for Good Mood

Fish is an important source of every essential element of happiness except fibre, and one of the best is wild-caught salmon.

Studies have found that people in countries with the highest fish consumption have the lowest rates of depression, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression and seasonal affective disorder (the winter blues). That’s at least in part because the fish has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. A 2008 study found fish oil to be as effective as Prozac for treating major depression.

The same compound that makes tomatoes red, lycopene, helps maintain mood by preventing the formation of inflammatory compounds that are associated with depression. Tomatoes contain other mood enhancers, such as folate and magnesium, as well as iron and vitamin B6, both needed by your brain to produce important mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

These root vegetables are an excellent source of the B vitamin folate that is crucial for good mood, memory retrieval, and processing speed. Higher

concentrations in the blood are linked to a decrease in negative moods and clinical depression. Beets are also packed with betaine, which our brain uses to form SAM-e, a natural antidepressant. And early research finds that another important nutrient found in beets – uridine – is as effective as prescription antidepressants when it’s combined with omega-3s.

Chile peppers are spicy because they contain a fat-soluble molecule called capsaicin. Our brains are loaded with receptors for capsaicin, and we respond to it by releasing endorphins, natural compounds that have a calming effect. As for garlic, it’s a top source of chromium, which influences the regulation of serotonin, the brain’s so-called happiness chemical.

Finally...

It will come as no surprise to hear that high sugar intake and depression go handin-hand. Instead try honey which contains traces of B vitamins, folate, iron, and manganese, in addition to 181 different bioactive compounds such as quercetin and caffeic acid, which boost energy production in the brain. Or pure maple syrup which contains minerals such as manganese, zinc, and calcium.

So, make 2015 the year that you eat to feel good – not just in what you are wearing, but where it really counts in your head!

varian cancer is the biggest gynaecological killer of woman in the UK, with the worst survival rate in Europe. This is largely due to the little awareness surrounding the disease and women being unsure what to look out for. As March is ovarian cancer awareness month we turn the focus onto this deadly disease in a bid for all women, and GPs, to take heed of the signs.

The inspirational Una Crudden, who was sadly taken by the terrible disease late last year, fought right to the end for things to change in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. She believed that if her condition had been caught in the early stages that she might have had more of a chance, and statistically she was right. There is a 90 per cent survival rate for those diagnosed in the very early stages, but sadly a lot of sufferers are diagnosed too late, when the cancer is too advanced and harder to treat. Una used her case as a strong message to women everywhere not to ignore the signs and not to settle for a diagnosis of IBS if symptoms persist. Una won Belfast Telegraph’s

There are currently no routine screening tests for checking the ovaries, making symptom awareness even more important. Key symptoms to look out for are; persistent abdominal bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full and increased need to pass urine more urgently or more often. Misdiagnosis happens because symptoms can point to less serious illness’ such as IBS, but it is important to note that women over the age of 50 rarely develop IBS and GPs should do a more thorough examination into the symptoms if IBS has been diagnosed. Other symptoms of ovarian cancer are frequent and will happen over twelve times a month, being very persistent. During Una’s campaign, gaining much support from MLAs all over the UK, new guidelines arose for GP’s from the NHS guidance body NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). Their guidelines recommend that if women report these symptoms and they last for more than a month, or they are very frequent throughout the month, she should be checked for ovarian cancer.

This alone is a great step forward in the detection of the disease, and this is also why it is very important to go back to your GP if symptoms persist, even if you have previously been diagnosed with a less severe illness.

Diagnosis of ovarian cancer will usually start out at the GP’s office; they will check symptoms and possibly do an internal vaginal exam to check for any lumps or bumps. A blood test can be carried out, known as the CA125 test, and depending on the results they may arrange for an ultrasound to have a look at your ovaries.

The most important thing to remember is; never ignore anything unusual, if you have a concern always seek advice from your GP and if symptoms persist always follow up. Help spread the word throughout the month of March by wearing teal and letting all your lady friends know - helping raise awareness may help save a life.

Chances are you know someone who does CrossFit, so what is it? In this issue NW finds out more about this fast growing global fitness programme.

T

o date, CrossFit has over 4,500 affiliated gyms throughout the world and for athletes wanting to compete, the Reebok CrossFit Games. A CrossFitter will likely never do the same routine twice in one week and each workout will usually last between 45 minutes to an hour. CrossFit gyms are usually large warehouses which offer group classes where an individual may choose to workout anywhere between three to five times a week.

As Jacqui Pope from CrossFit MCI in Bangor explains, ‘CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme and defined as; constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements. What this means is that the workouts, (or ‘WOD’s’ as we call them which means workout of the day) are rarely repeated, they are typically short sprint style workouts and they use movements relative to every day activities like running, squats, lifts, presses, jumping and throwing.’

movements like the Snatch and Clean and Jerk and Gymnastic body weight based movements like hand stands, pull ups, press ups and dips into workouts,‘ adds Jacqui.

So why does Jacqui think that CrossFit is proving to be such a hit here in Northern Ireland? ‘I think that Crossfit is such a popular form of training for men and women in Northern Ireland because of its short high intensity format, the high level of coaching each person receives, the community aspect and the vast variety of movements and skills that it incorporates into the training. There is also a great competitive atmosphere in CrossFit that

appeals to those who have possibly been competitive in a sport but no longer participate.’

Women initially fear weight training because of the notion that they will become ‘bulky’ or ‘masculine’ looking which simply isn’t the case. At CrossFit we emphasise the important role training with weights has on bone density, fat burning and metabolism and instruct all of our athletes on the proper form for all weight lifting exercises such as; the back, front and overhead squats; the shoulder press, push press and push jerk and the dead-lift and sumo dead-lift.’

‘How we move in CrossFit is of the utmost importance. Flexibility and mobility exercises are also a big part of our every day warm ups and workouts. This is especially important in the Olympic lifts and Gymnastic movements. I have seen a marked improvement in many of our athletes flexibility and mobility since beginning CrossFit and this has great importance for reducing the risk of injury during everyday activities.’

‘For those who have yet to try CrossFit I would say its for everyone and its honestly the most I have enjoyed training in my entire life. All the movements and workouts can be tailored to suit everyone from the hard charging athlete to the person who has never exercised before in their lives. The friendships formed and the community spirit is fantastic. Everyone works together to encourage and push each other and you will achieve things that you may have previously thought impossible.’ and competive spirit with this form of exercise. As Jacqui comments, ‘One thing that CrossFit offers women that other forms of exercise can’t is the ability to progress to doing movements that previously seemed impossible like body weight pull ups or dips. By scaling these movements and focusing on assisted versions women can quickly become masters of their body weight.’

‘Free weight areas in commercial gyms are typically a male dominated environment where women are often too intimidated to venture into, however, in CrossFit men and women train side by side in a gym with no mirrors because we believe that you should focus on ‘feeling’ the movement, not watching yourself or being concerned by how you look whilst exercising. I personally having come from a commercial gym background find the lack of mirrors has released me from the aesthetic world of constantly worrying about how I look and has given me the freedom to enjoy the exercise a lot more.’

f you’ve never tried CrossFit before and you think it may be the right workout for you, here are some helpful tips for staying safe: • Go to a few different gyms, talk to the coaches and get an idea for what the workout entails. Most CrossFit gyms offer a free introductory class to beginners considering joining the programme. This is a great way to meet your potential CrossFit coach.

• Be sure to make your coaches aware of any previous injuries before attempting any CrossFit exercises. If you have a serious pre-existing injury you may even want to speak with your doctor before purchasing a package for this high-intensity program.

• Before attempting CrossFit you should have a basic understanding of general fitness. As Jonathon puts it, “You wouldn’t add weight to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, so don’t add weight to a squat with poor form.” Be sure to take an “On Ramp” or “Elements” course to ensure you’ll complete WODs safely and effectively.

• Scale your workouts. This is something that is discussed a lot in the CrossFit culture. To “scale your workout” means that you, as a beginner, cannot lift as much weight as CrossFit Chris who has been doing this for years. This also applies to intensity and knowing when your body has reached its maximum capacity.

Q: What shoes should I be buying this Spring/Summer my husband loves heels but I’m very keen not to look out of date. I hear flats in particular brogues are big again.

Q: Recently I have heard a lot of people talking about Fat Grafting - what is this and what does it involve?

Sara says... This season there is a plethora of shoes to choose fromvertiginous or flat, slim or chunky, simple or adorned, neutral or rainbow bright. Really it is entirely up to your own personal style, comfort, lifestyle and taste. This season designers have thrown beautifully decorative footwear, although the sporty, practical look is still big news and I for one will not be giving up my trainers any time soon. In short: every style and colour of sandal, shoe and boot stomped up and down the SS15 catwalks.

For me, the two main points of shoe reference this season are the 90s and the 70s. The 70s are massive this season anyway, and with that comes huge wedges and platforms, either in brights with glitter and stars, glam rock and disco style (Cavalli and YSL), or in neutrals with natural adornment and suede, boho style (Thakoon). Western style footwear also slots into the relaxed hippy look.

Fashion’s on-going love affair with the 90’s brings back the mule (Narciso Rodriguez), the trainer (Acne), DMs (Jeremy Scott), the clumpy flatform sandal (DKNY), the T-bar, ankle strap and the elegant high pump, with a slim heel and pointed toe.

You are right, flats are still big news, pointy toe flats (Balenciaga), comfy sandals and yes, oxfords are still in style, Chanel’s gold cut-out version are delightful. I think your concern with heels may have been with the style that has been about for the past ten or so years – the slim heel and platform toe style, which was certainly flattering and fairly comfortable as five inch heels go... but have become increasingly stripper-esque over the last couple of years. Steer clear.

Stephen says... The indications for fat grafting are ever increasing. Among other things it can be used for breast enlargement, help with breast reconstruction and be a very useful addition to facelift surgery.

The purpose of fat transfer is to take fat from another part of the body (e.g. the abdomen or flanks) and transfer it to another eg the face to enhance volume in key areas and can also help restore or enhance the volume of breasts or buttocks as well as reversing some of the changes of ageing. When fat is transplanted to another site it needs new blood vessels to grow into it to provide nourishment for the fat cells. Following the pioneering work of Sydney Coleman in New York in the 1990’s this procedure has been greatly refined to improve the survival of the grafted fat to around 60%. This is achieved by firstly purifying the fat after it is harvested and secondly by placing it in multiple tunnels to build up layers which can be nourished by new blood vessels in a much more reliable fashion than ever before.

If a significant breast enlargement (more than a cup size) is desired silicone implants still provide the best method of achieving this. However I have found fat transfer a very useful method of achieving a modest increase in breast size and a valuable adjunct to procedures such as facelift in order to rejuvenate the face by a volumetric approach.

Q: I’m bored with my hair. I feel like I’m stuck in a rut. I have had a Rachel for so long that I’m almost back in fashion. Is there a particular hairstyle to bring me bang up-todate?

Paul says... The good news is the iconic Rachael is back in fashion! Although Sienna Miller it’s had a bit of a makeover itself, Jennifer Aniston’s classic 90s feather cut is less stiff with lighter styling and more natural so if it’s a look you like my advice is ask your stylist to modify your haircut to update it with a view to gradually changing, this can be achieved by adding a sexy new fringe a-la Alexa Chung, or taking it shorter to similar to Sienna Miller’s new sexy mid-length bobish Rachael.

Alternatively experiment with products, Unite Hair have a beautiful product called Beach day which is perfect for that undone BOHO look and can transform a DO to a bit downtown Rock ‘n’ Roll effortlessly. When you have had a style for a long time and it seems to have a gone a bit flat and directionless your hair may need a bit of counselling if your stylist isn’t responding to your concerns about needing change, time for help.

Q: I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I’m trying to reduce it with diet alone, have you any tips?

Rachel says... High blood pressure can be related to the amount of salt in our diets. We all need a little salt for our bodies to function, however most of us consume more than the 6g/day (a teaspoon) recommended amount. High blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart attacks, therefore it is extremely important to reduce it to normal levels (120/80). 75% of salt comes from processed food, but don’t be fooled that this only means crisps, ready meals and soups. It is also important to check labelling on foods such as breads and cereals. If you must add salt to foods do so in cooking, avoid setting the salt cellar on the table. Try to increase flavours with dried herbs, spices, pepper, chilli etc. Also don’t be fooled by buying different types of salt, they are all as bad as each other. We’ve even embraced the idea of the vajazzle thanks to the takeover of those Essex peeps from TOWIE, but because we can’t seem to rest on our laurels these days, and to ensure this area of our body doesn’t start to feel neglected, now we have the vajacial or as one New York salon refers to it, the peach smoothie - yes, it’s a facial for your vagina!

‘We are constantly seeing new treatments come to our shores here in Britain; everyone’s keen to be a trendsetter and introduce the next best beauty secret to the UK market and the consumer always loves something new and intriguing to try out,’ said Colin Webster of the British Association of Beauty Therapists and Cosmetologists (Babtac).

Many may view this as a silly craze, another way for beauty marketeers to cash in on a treatment that we feel will help us look our best and retain our youthful looks in our efforts to look perfect everywhere!

However, during the 50 minute treatment which sees this area as this area get plucked, cleansed, moisturised and covered in a mask, it is also the solution for the ingrown hairs and red bumps that some women experience after a bikini wax, soothing and beautifying this area once again after years upon years of bikini waxing.

While it would appear that British women are more focused than ever on their nether regions, vajacials have been offered in American salons for many years, with those offering the treatments in the US reaffirming that they are particularly

Known for tackling the health issues of the day, ITV1‘s This Morning programme recently lived up to it’s reputation for shocking it’s viewers (previously they’ve broadcast footage of a woman having a smear test and a man having a rectal examination for prostate cancer.) when three women agreed to try the treatment live on air and give their feedback.

This Morning welcomed Lisa Palmer, 41, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who shared her recipe for achieving a more youthful vagina that costs less than £5.

Lisa recommends a weekly DIY treatment which draws on techniques from the Far East. First, it involves steaming the vagina for 20 minutes. To do this, she recommends ‘using a facial steamer - although it can be awkward to squat over - or one that you can hold over that area’. Next her natural mix of ingredients must be applied - coconut oil (one teaspoon), Vitamin E cream (one teaspoon), honey (one teaspoon) and egg white (from one egg). Lisa mixed up the potion in the studio - which she said has been developed by ‘trial and error’ using herself as the ‘guinea pig’. According to Lisa women who apply the lotion regularly will notice the difference in three to six months. As well as steaming and applying the lotion, she also recommends women do pelvic floor exercises once a day.

For those wondering whether to try this treatment for themselves or simply to brush

it aside as an unnecessary gimmick, Lisa certainly has seen the results for herself and has been told that her ladyparts are akin to a woman in her twenties and Colin Webster believes, ‘If the market moves in this direction and the treatments make women feel empowered and confident, then there’s no harm in it.’

INGREDIENTS: Coconut oil - Can kill bacteria and moistures the skin (one teaspoon) Vitamin E - Conditions the skin prevents signs of anti ageing (one teaspoon) Honey - Antibacterial and contains antioxidants to slow down ageing and boosts skin (one teaspoon) Egg white - Tightens skin and improves texture (one egg white) METHOD: • Start with steaming the vagina for 20 minutes.

• Mix all the ingredients and pre-heat in microwave for 20 seconds leave on for 15 minutes then rinse off with rose water.

Lisa suggests performing the facial every day for seven days to begin with and then once a week with a combination of pelvic floor exercises.

Just the Three of Us! Cool FM breakfast show presenter and stylist, Rebecca McKinney, enjoys a close relationship with her mum and nanny and is looking forward to some quality time with them both this Mother’s Day.

ebecca is very close to her mum Valerie, and her nanny Sheila. As she says, ‘We’re a very close family. My mum and nanny are the best of friends and they talk everyday. Having been brought up in this environment, I now enjoy the same relationship with mum, and no matter how busy I am, I like to talk to her everyday.

‘Both my mum and nanny are very supportive of me, as are my entire family. My parents are privately proud of everything I’ve achieved and they understand that it’s important for me to do something that makes me happy.

Whether as the personal stylist at Victoria Square prior to moving on to a career as a broadcaster with Cool FM and keeping up my styling work on a freelance basis, mum is behind me all the way.

‘I’m loving working alongside Pete Snodden and Paulo Ross on the breakfast show and I’m presenting at FASHIONWEEK again this season, and continue to enjoy working as a freelance fashion stylist,’ adds Rebecca.

‘Mum and nanny came along to all of the big fashion shows I staged during my time with Victoria Square and come to support me at FASHIONWEEK. When I started on the radio, mum, an avid listener of Classic FM, made the switch to Cool FM and she really enjoys listening to our morning show. Mum knows I am happy and enjoying what I’m doing so in turn she is delighted for me and keeps me well grounded!

‘My mum is a teacher and she is always very well turned out and has a great classic style. My nanny is 87 and is still very glam with her weekly trip to the hairdressers and her sense of style. Both of these women have influenced me and helped to develop my love of fashion and my own sense of style.

‘My mum has always had a really good eye for fashion. I often use mum as a soundboard for some of my fashion shoots and she loves seeing all of the different styles and giving me her opinion.

Looking back, while I rebelled against her fashion choices for me when I was younger, I now know she was right! I love going shopping with mum and nanny, and really respect their opinions. Mum

‘As my schedule has got busier I am very conscious about setting aside time to spend with mum and nanny. If I haven’t seen either of them throughout the week, I will get caught up over lunch on a Sunday and we’ll chill out in front of the TV - I must have seen Pride & Prejudice a hundred times, but it’s a movie we all love watching!

This tends to be how we spend Mother’s Day, all of us together for lunch, a walk and generally just enjoying each other’s company for the day.

‘My nanny has always wanted to go to the Merchant Hotel, so as a birthday present to her this year I’m treating the three of us to afternoon tea. I know she’ll love it and I’m really glad I am able to experience this with her and mum.

‘I have so many lovely memories of time spent with my nanny, and in turn, with my mum. I know we’ve lots more to look forward to and I’m so lucky to have both of these amazing women in my life.’

NEW BEGINNINGS

A

fter spending seven years living in Scotland, it was time for Zoe to return to her roots in Northern Ireland. Starting over again meant finding her new dream home, and having grown up in Antrim town it seemed only natural to start looking there. Zoe was sure she wanted a new build, and luckily at that time there were a number of new developments around the town, but as soon as she met the builders at Lagan Homes she fell in love with the plans and felt completely confident that they could work with her to achieve her

dream home. ‘Lagan Homes were fantastic from the start.’ Zoe says, ‘Site Manager, Paddy Feeney, was always on hand and he even tweaked the plans so that my kitchen, dining area and sunroom became an open planned area, which I couldn’t have been happier about – it has since become the hub of the home!’

Zoe was involved right from the start of the build, and when it came to choosing her kitchen she was sure of what she wanted.

‘I knew that I wanted the cabinetry to be neutral, and at that time I really loved all

things copper, so I tried desperately to find copper tiles but it just wasn’t possible!’ She laughs, ‘Copper was only just starting to come through in interiors at that time, and so I settled for a deep burgundy tile, which was an ideal alternative for me.’

‘As for flooring in my kitchen, I was sure I didn’t want anything too light, but I didn’t want something too dark either, and so I opted for a white wash wood effect tile which ties in well with the rest of the room, and it is ideal with two little whippet pups running around!’ Zoe adds.

Throughout the home we are greeted by contemporary trends, with lots of interesting pieces which add character to each of the rooms, but it is hard to pin point just one particular style. ‘I draw inspiration from a number of different areas.’ Zoe explains, ‘I have infused my love for Moroccan warmth, Scandinavian frostiness and an industrial edge, and somehow managed to bring them all together. I even managed to achieve the open-bricklook I pined for, thanks to wallpaper!’

abstract. ‘I actually painted those myself,’ she explains. ‘I found it very hard to find affordable, large scale art anywhere, so I decided to get my paintbrushes back out and set out on a new project, my first piece drew inspiration from Hemmingway’s A Moveable Feast. Large artwork can really bring life to a huge empty wall, and I love the fact I can bring whatever colours I want into it. After some demand, I now also paint on commission, which I love.’

What is Zoe’s favourite item, you might wonder? ‘It is difficult to choose, but I have a collection of vintage orange wrappers that I have recently had framed and I really love how it turned out!’ She says, ‘I am just really happy with how everything is coming together. It’s good to be home.’

Lord Mayor takes on the tower for Friends of Cancer Centre

T

he Lord Mayor of Belfast is calling on people to abseil one of Belfast’s most iconic and tallest buildings for the very first time, all to raise money for local charity Friends of the Lord Mayor of Belfast Nichola Mallon with Colleen Cancer Centre.

Cancer Centre, based at the heart of the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and to mark the milestone it is holding the very first abseil down Belfast City Hospital’s famous yellow tower block. The Take on the Tower Abseil takes place on the 11th and 12th April. Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Nichola Mallon urged people to sign up for the abseil: “This is a great opportunity for those with an adventurous spirit,” she said.

“What a wonderful way to support a charity that has helped so many local families over the past three decades.”

Registration for the event is £40 per person and each participant is asked to raise a suggested minimum sponsorship of £150 for the charity. You can find out more by calling 028 9069 9393.

Starter: Beetroot, Walnut & Goats Cheese Risotto

(Serves 4)

Ingredients

6 tbsp oil & butter 2 shallots 2 garlic clove 1 cup white wine 150g riso rice 650ml vegetable stock 250ml beetroot juice 100g cooked beetroot chopped up 50g walnuts 80g goats cheese 50g Chopped fresh herbs (flat leaf parsley, tarragon, chives)

Method

• Place the stock & beetroot juice into a large pan over a medium heat and bring to the boil, then turn the heat down as low as it will go, to keep the stock hot but without letting it reduce too much.

• Heat the butter in a wide pan over a low to moderate heat. When the butter is foaming, add the onion and garlic and keep moving for a minute or two then add the risotto and keep moving for another minute or two then add the wine until reduced, next add the stock one or two ladles at a time and keep working, this should take about 15-20 minutes. (If you run out of stock just add

boiling water). Season to taste, add half the herbs, half the goats cheese and half the cooked beetroot. Serve in warm bowls, sprinkle the remaining walnuts, herbs and goats cheese and finish with a little olive oil.

Selection of Miniature Desserts: Mini Almond Pannacota & Toasted Pistachio (Serves 6)

Ingredients

400ml Double Cream 200ml Milk 50g sugar 50g toasted almonds 1tsp vanilla essence 1tsp Almond essence 1 gelatine leaf.

Method

• Soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. Place the milk, cream, vanilla, almond and sugar into a pan and bring to a simmer. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan and take off the heat. Stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Divide the mixture among 4-6 shot glasses and leave to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. Toast pistachio nuts and crush as a garnish on top.

Main Course: Monkfish 'Osso Bucco' with Potato, Fennel, Celery Truffle Stew & Lemon Caper Oil

(Serves 4)

Ingredients

1 whole monkfish trimmed (request from fishmonger) 3 splashes rape seed oil 25g butter 1 onion roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves chopped 2 fennel bulbs roughly chopped 4 celery sticks chopped 1 leek chopped 6 potatoes peeled & chopped Sml handful thyme 2 bay leaves Pinch of toasted fennel & coriander seed 2 large splashes of White Wine

Method

• Place oil and butter in a hot pan, add all other ingredients and reduce heat by 1/3. Keep moving for about five minutes. Next add two large splashes of white wine & reduce, then add fish or vegetable stock (just enough to cover) and simmer until potatoes are soft.

• To serve add chopped scallions, dice tomatoes, spinach, chopped herbs (tarragon, flat leave parsley and chive). Mix capers, squeeze one lemon and 30ml rape seed oil to finish!

Miniature Dessert: Mini Strawberry Cheesecake (Serves 4/6)

Ingredients

100g cream cheese 50ml Double Cream 1tsp vanilla essence 100g icing sugar 100ml strawberry coulis 2 Digestive biscuits

• Whisk the Cream Cheese, Double Cream, Vanilla Essence and Icing Sugar together until firm. Place some of the strawberry coulis in the bottom of a small glass ramekin, add the cheesecake mixture and top with crushed Digestive biscuits.

Lets face it, no matter how miserable you feel, flipping and dropping a pancake will always raise a smile. Serve these with maple syrup or a rum-soaked raisin and pear compote.

Triple Gingerbread Pancakes Serves 4 Ingredients 3 eggs 200 ml buttermilk 1 tablespoon treacle 300 g plain flour 1 level teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 dessertspoon chopped preserved ginger 1 teaspoon chopped crystalised ginger 1 tablespoon caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon Method Whisk the eggs, buttermilk and treacle together. Sift the flour and baking soda into a bowl with the three gingers, sugar and lemon zest. Make a well in the centre and add the buttermilk mixture and whisk to a smooth batter. Set aside for 20 minutes to rest.

Very lightly rub a griddle pan or frying pan with oil or butter and drop in tablespoons of the batter - keep them well apart, as they’ll spread and rise.

When bubbles appear on the surface, flip the pancakes over and cook for another minute on the other side. Cool on a wire rack or eat immediately with maple syrup or the rum-soaked raisin and pear compote.

Colebrooke Spa – a perfect hideaway for relaxation C

olebrooke Spa, is one of Northern Ireland’s most unique Spa destinations.

Nestled away down a winding lane in the spectacular grounds of Colebrooke House, a beautiful historical neo-classical mansion located just outside of Brookeborough in the tranquil Fermanagh Lakelands.

Colebrooke Park is also the proud winner of Bioblitz 2013. In a competition, which took place over 24 hours, the scientists found 1085 species. It was the first time this has ever been achieved. Some of the wildlife that is often seen on the estate includes, red squirrels, sika deer, hares, pine martens, wood peckers, cuckoos, kingfishers, otters, buzzards and mink to name but a few.

The spa was opened in 2012 as a result of a project on Channel 4’s Country House Rescue to develop a luxury Spa at Colebrooke Park. It is managed by local businesswoman Nadine Lyons who has an excellent pedigree within the beauty industry. The Spa is not exclusive to guests of the Estate which is perfect as this place is

too good to be kept a secret.

The Spa is tucked way at the side of the house. Wooded fencing surrounds the spa ensures plenty of privacy which is perfect if you wish to use the outdoor hot tub, Jacuzzi or sauna situated on its terrace.

I recently visited the spa to avail of a Whitehill Cottage is one of many luxurious self-catering cottages on the Estate.

LaStone full body massage to help ease away the week’s stresses and ease my weary muscles.

I was shown to the changing area by a very pleasant assistant and after a very quick change into my robe and slippers I was shown to the relaxation area.

LIFESTYLEREVIEW Reclining loungers, an open fire and a choice of freshly squeezed juices, water and fruit platters were all provided to heighten the feeling of wellbeing. After a period of R&R time my therapist arrived to take me to the treatment room. After filling out my consultation form the therapist asked if I would like her to converse with me during my treatment – something I wasn’t opposed to!

Starting with my feet she worked on my legs with oils and hot stones. She then made her way up to my arms and back before kneading out the knots of tension round my neck and shoulders. Once completed I hopped onto my back where she continued to work on the front of my shoulder, arms and legs before finishing off with a gentle temple massage. I felt completely relaxed by the end of my treatment.

Colebrooke Spa is a place I would certainly revisit and recommend to anyone who is looking to unwind. Guests enjoy a home-from-home environment and have the choice of a wide variety of luxury Yon-ka and Decleor treatments and packages including Facials, Massages, Couples Packages, Day Spa Retreats, Group Packages, Mother-To-Be treatments and Men’s Menu.

You can also make the most of your time at Colebrooke Spa and stay in one of the luxury self-catering cottages available on Colebrooke Park. I stayed the night before my treatment in the Whitehill Cottage. It has been beautifully and sympathetically restored to offer luxurious modern facilities without compromising the period features and ambiance of what is a stunning example of an original Irish cottage.

An open log fire with comfy sofas await you in the living area. The kitchen is a country style room with all the mod cons you will need. The two bedrooms have

ensuites including a bath and shower, again these are tastefully decorated with superking beds to ensure a great night’s sleep. The cottage sleeps four and is suitable for couples or families or even a group of

friends. This idyllic holiday cottage is a perfect secret getaway in which to relax and unwind. And one other great thing is that you can bring your pet pooch along too!

Amsterdam: Spring Awakening

Early spring is a great time to get away for a short break to reawaken the senses.

Amsterdam’s laid back attitude and abundance of cultural gems are sure to shake off any residual winter blues and put a spring in your step.

A

msterdam should be on everyone’s bucket list as a must visit destination, if only to meet the locals. Their friendly and gentle humour will put you at ease immediately, and when combined with the city’s ingrained culture of tolerance, you will find yourself feeling at home in this city very quickly. The people of Amsterdam have always hailed trade as it’s most important asset, a priority before even religion and ideology, and the city has historically been a safe haven for those seeking refuge.

One of my favourite ways to see a city is on foot, and the 165 canals in the city amount to 100km to stroll along and enjoy, a weekend well spent in my eyes.

As you wander around the city taking in the sites, take time to absorb your surroundings. The canal houses of Amsterdam were once home to the wealthy and well-to-do, but have now been transformed into boutique hotels, offices, private accommodation or museums. The tall, narrow houses would have had a pulley system in order to the lift furniture and

other goods from the ground outside, up to the attic of the house, without having to negotiate the narrow staircases inside.

Where to stay

Amsterdam is a city you want to get out in and experience, so a central location is key. The DoubleTree by Hilton, beside

Amsterdam Centraal Station has rooms which perfectly frame the views right over the historic city centre, and if opting for a suite guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast and late afternoon drinks and snacks in the Executive Lounge. For a memorable meal, check out Johannes 413 restaurant. Chef Tommy den Hartog creates imaginative menus of 4, 5, 6 or 7 courses, which he updates on a monthly basis. Quality ingredients such as yellowfin tuna, venison and pork belly are on offer this month, all with matched wines. The opulent menu is complemented well by the surroundings, which strike a careful balance between simplicity so as not to detract from the food, and a certain degree of comfort you would expect from an esteemed establishment such as this. The experience is made truly impressive by the staff, whose knowledge and understanding of the menu and friendliness will entice you back to experience what’s on offer month after month. (www.restaurantjohannes.nl/en/) Once you have savoured the local cuisine, it’s time for a drink. Brown bars are dotted around the streets. These watering holes offer a real taste of local life. On entering you will not be surprised to learn that the name ‘brown bar’ harks to their cosy wooden clad interior and a nicotine-stained ceiling. In fact, for a lot of people these bars act as an extension of their living rooms.

Order jenever to fit in like a local. This is a Dutch spirit similar to gin, first brewed by a Dutch chemist by the name of Sylvius de Bouve.

Where to go

Forget the Red Light District and Coffeeshops, to get a real taste of

Amsterdam, make your way to the Nine Streets district, a lattice of streets with it’s own rustic character packed with bars, restaurants and chic boutiques. This part of the city was constructed in the 17th Century and has always been home to crafts people and artisans. The boutique shops are all authentic and local and are the perfect places to pick up a few souvenirs or gifts. Look out for De Kaaskamer, easily one of the best cheese shops in the city. The shop is packed from floor to ceiling with cheeses and all sorts of wine and chutneys for perfect combinations, and they’ll even vacuum pack it for you to bring home in your suitcase. without exploring at least a few of the city’s many museums and galleries. Trying to pick a favourite is difficult, but the Anne Frank house is a must. The house is set up exactly how Anne left it. The stark surroundings are heartbreaking and focus the mind on the more turbulent times this now serene city has faced.

Perhaps a weekend isn’t long enough to absorb all the Amsterdam has to offer, but this at least leaves the perfect excuse for a return visit.

New Corsa sets the small car standard T he new Vauxhall Corsa has set the standard for small cars. With a new turbocharged petrol engine, eyecatching styling, roomy interior and excellent fuel economy, the new Corsa is the car to beat.

Prices start from just £8,995 on-theroad, as list prices have been cut by £3,000 compared to the outgoing model, despite a huge leap in quality and equipment levels across a more simplified range.

Still one the UK’s top-selling and bestloved cars, the current model continues to garner affection from its owners thanks to its combination of compact exterior dimensions and clever use of cabin space – major considerations when the new car was conceived.

There are so many iconic things to see and do, like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, but why not try and fit in these alternative things on your visit as well?

out with plants and trees, seating and even restaurants, it runs from Ganesvoort St in the Meatpacking District to West 34th St (between 10th and 12th Avenues) and is something completely unique in the city.

There are lots of well-known museums and art galleries in the city (particularly on ‘Museum Mile’ on Fifth Avenue where the MET, the Guggenheim and the National Academy Museum stand side by side) but

don’t ignore other great options like The Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn), Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Building (2 East 91st St) and the Museum of the City of New York (1220 5th Avenue at 103rd St).

Although New York is known as the ‘concrete jungle’, there are some green areas when you want to get back to nature.

First on the list for any true fashionista has got to be the big department stores that only New York could produce. The iconic ones to visit are Bergdorf Goodman (754 Fifth Avenue), Bloomingdales (59th Street and Lexington Avenue), Saks Fifth Avenue (611 5th Avenue) and Macy’s (151 West 34th Street). With a host of high-end designers all under one roof, these are the places to get those luxury items you’ve been saving up for.

For those of you looking for a bargain, a visit to Woodbury Common is essential.

With discounts on a range of big name designers like Gucci, Dior, J Crew and Diane von Furstenberg, it is about an hour’s drive outside of New York City. You can hire a car or take one of the frequent buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd and 8th Avenue).

It isn’t all about the big designers though, as you can also find a host of smaller boutiques and one-off stores to find something truly special. We like Pinky Otto (locations in the East Village, Soho and Williamsburg, Brooklyn) and Fivestory (18 E 69th St).

Vintage shops are also fun to visit and mean you can find something really unique.

Fisch for the Hip in Chelsea is the go-to for high-end designer pieces (like Chanel or Hermes) or, at the other end of the spectrum, go for a rummage through the rails at the Flea Market in Brooklyn (held at the weekends).

Eating & Drinking

The chances are when you’re exploring the city you’ll find loads of restaurants that you’d like to try. This is especially true in downtown Manhattan, in areas like Soho, Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, the Lower East Side and the Lower West Side, which are full of independent bars and restaurants. Also don’t forget about Harlem, where at Sylvia’s (located at 328 Malcolm X Boulevard and where the Sylvia herself is something of a local celebrity) you’ll get served traditional American ‘soul food’.

There are also areas in the city, like Little Italy, Chinatown (both in downtown Manhattan) and Koreatown (in Midtown Manhattan), where you’ll find specific kinds of food. They’re also great because the areas really reflect the culture of the people who live and work there. The only

difficulty will be choosing which restaurant to go to!

Smorgasburg in Brooklyn is a must for food lovers. Always popular amongst locals and visitors, local vendors sell food inspired from all over the world. We recommend going in the summer when it is held outdoors but if you’re planning a visit in the winter months, don’t panic because it is still on, just in an indoor venue.

If you want to feel like Carrie Bradshaw when you hit the town, visit a rooftop bar with nice views over the city and order a classic cocktail. Some favourites are The Standard Hotel (848 Washington at 13th Street); Spyglass (on the 22nd floor at Archer Hotel, 47 West 38th Street) and The Refinery (63 West 38th Street). Again these are great for sitting out during the summer

but don’t despair if you’re visiting during winter because some, like 230 on Fifth (230 Fifth Avenue) will give you blankets and heaters so you can sit outside even when the weather is a bit cooler.

The other kind of bar you should visit are speakeasies. Don’t expect them to be easy to find though because they are channeling the Prohibition era when drinking was illegal so these bars are hidden. To get to the bar, you’ll have to knock on an unmarked door, walk through a jewellery shop or, in one case, through an old telephone box. Favourites include Death & Company (433 East 6th Street); The Raines Law Room (48 West 17th Street) and Please Don’t Tell (113 Saint Marks Place; for this bar, you need to make a reservation to be guaranteed entry).

Gillian Fraser and David Simms enjoyed the sea and sky at their destination beach wedding in Costa del Sol, Spain.

illian and David went beyond the beaten track by having their wedding at El Oceano, a luxury beach-front hotel in the gorgeous town of Mijas. The couple had always liked the idea of getting married abroad, and chose El Oceano for its impressive service, fine dining and stunning views. Plus, they knew that having their dream wedding on the coast of Spain meant sunshine was a guarantee!

Gillian had done hair trials in Spain before, but wanted to look and feel like herself on the big day. She opted to do her own hair and makeup, coiffing her hair into an elegant, relaxed up-do and applying new makeup from Space.NK for a natural, timeless look. Her dress was a bespoke number from The Bridal Suite in Holywood, and she was able to convert its original lace overlay into a veil with vintage Spanish flair. She wanted jewellery that was versatile enough to wear again, so she stacked a diamanté bracelet, a pearl Ti Siento bracelet, and a Thomas Sabo charm bracelet for maximum effect.

The bride and groom added a themed element to the day as well, naming their tables after designer sunglasses brands. Of course, the top table was D&G — the newlyweds’ initials! At the reception, the 70 well-travelled guests were serenaded by El Oceano’s resident pianist, followed by musician Quike on a glow-in-the-dark electric violin. Quike joined the DJ for the last few hours of the party, bringing Gillian and David’s day to a smashing finish.
