Dear Readers,

It’s tax time again. As I wrote last year, this is an opportune moment for each of us to take the necessary time to attend to our finances, since our financial situation can have a profound impact on our health care outcomes and our overall wellbeing. This impact goes far beyond the simplicity of saying that those with means have more access to more care. Last March, I wrote about the negative health effects that poverty can have on person. As I said then, among the chief contributing factors to the poorer health of people with less money is the chronic stress levels that occur when someone is constantly having to worry about their finances and the needs of their family. This year, as tax time is once again upon us, I want to take some time to show a couple of ways in which poverty itself can be expensive. Some of these extra expenses are in having fewer choices in certain situations, but others are strictly financial. Transportation is something many of us can take for granted. But the costs of transportation can be enormous. For those of us lucky enough to be able to buy a car, beyond the car payment there is the cost of insurance. For many, the expense of buying, insuring, fueling and maintaining a car is outside of the monthly budget. As a result, they are forced to rely on public transportation for getting around. While the cost is not as high, the amount of time spent getting from one place to another can go up quite a bit. What may be a 15 minute drive in one’s own car can become a 30 minute bus ride plus the 5 or 10 minute walk to and from the bus stop. And this is all assuming that one lives near enough to a bus line to 4

make this practicable. Also factor in that busses run when they run, not when you want them to run, so if you are riding to work there will inevitably be wasted time before or after your shift, which can be as much as half an hour or more. As a result, much more of your week is eaten up just getting to and from work. If you have children, it is that much longer that you must either arrange babysitting or pay for daycare. Many poorer neighborhoods have no local grocery stores, and the ones that do exist often are of lesser quality and actually have higher prices. This often means another excursion on the bus and all that goes along with that, settling for the higher prices and low selection of boxed or canned foods at the nearest stop’n’shop gas station, or putting up with that low quality grocery store. Once inside the grocery store, purchasing healthy foods can often be more expensive. All of these factors contribute to a lower quality of diet among those of less economic means. This diet, in turn, leads to more health issues down the line, which can raise health care costs. When we speak about access, we should not only think about how much something costs, but how difficult it is to physically get into a position to make the purchase. Of course, while there are always some inherent risks, as we all saw in the mortgage crisis which led up to the Great Recession, home ownership is one of the most important ways a family can gain some financial stability. While many choose to rent for various reasons that make sense for them, many others wish they could own their own home but don’t have the ability to do so. As a result, they are stuck in a loop of paying rent, often for dramatically less space than they would get for an equivalent mortgage payment. While a portion of all mortgage payments are added to the owners’ own wealth, all of a rental payment is gone forever. So, ultimately, the renter is

paying more for less space. These costs are not only paid for by the individual, but are also spread out among the community. Every time a person has to pay extra just because they do not have the means to pay less, the result is that money that could have stayed in the community is removed. Not only that, but all of the extra time spent on transportation or working a second job is time not spent working on a community project, participating in a church event, or raising children. It drains the community’s ability to empower their own entrepreneurs, thus losing out on both the economic as well as the cultural benefits of locally owned businesses. This is a problem in rural communities, villages, and large cities. Because of the things separating some of these communities from each other, be it geography, cultural, or politics, it can be easy to forget that all these costs are shared by low wage workers all over. As regular readers of this column will note, I believe that the health of a community and an individual have a direct relationship to one another. Wherever you may fall on the economic spectrum, the condition of the all people in your community at

Jewelry, Crystals & Stones Clothing by Braja Tarot, Books, Candles, Incense, Herbs, Oils, Singing Bowls and Bells 39 Court Street Binghamton

all points on that spectrum should be of concern to you. Not only should you refrain from blaming the poor for what they do not have, but you should not resent the rich for all they do have. As I have tried to illustrate, this is often the result not of who they are, but the situation they found themselves in. Often we are able to intellectualize this idea, but when the actual people who are represented by these ideas stand before us we find it harder not to have these feelings. What is more, these negative feelings of blame or resentment are not only something you put out into the world, but they reside within you and do you as much harm as anyone else. Compassion is probably more important to the person who feels and acts on it than it is to its recipient. As I drive through and around many of the communities in Upstate New York I often repeat one of my favorite sayings: There, but for the grace of God, go I. Seth Caister-Rivera

Escaping the Mind Field An excerpt from

Luminous Life by Dr. Jacob Israel Liberman

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness....Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. — Albert Einstein

ho would we be if we forgot our name,

age, gender, skin color, religion, preferences, state of health, and every other descriptor we use to differentiate ourselves from each other? What would our lives be like if we did not see each other as different from ourselves?

Many of the problems we encounter in our lives are due to the misperception that we are separate from one another, when we are actually inseparably connected to each other and everything else in the universe. We have all been conditioned by this limited view of reality to identify our mind and body as “me” and everything else as “not me,” resulting in loneliness, envy, violence, and prejudice. Every war, inquisition, ethnic cleansing, act of terror, and genocide is the external manifestation of our 10

conditioned prejudice when someone’s ideas, skin color, gender, religion, sexual nature, or physical appearance is different than our own. All these acts of violence are an attempt to extinguish the “not me” and assert the “me.” Many wars have been carried out to prove that my God is better than yours. But the real violence is the internal conflict we experience throughout our lives, because we do not know who we are and believe we are essentially different from others. In his book Wholeness and the Implicate Order, renowned physicist David Bohm writes, “The widespread and pervasive distinctions between people . . . which are now preventing mankind from working together for the common good, and indeed, even for survival, have one of the key factors of their origin in a kind of thought that treats things as inherently divided.” If physicists proffer that the entire universe is comprised of a singular, luminous potential known as light (which we explored in the last chapter), and ancient mystical texts have historically referred to God and consciousness as light, then how does this illusion of separateness come into being?

APRIL 2018

The Mind Makes It Matter

At a fundamental level, all that exists is an ocean of infinite potentiality — endless possibilities that only manifest as specific outcomes when measured by a device or a person acting as an observer. In theory, the observer should not impact whatever is being observed, resulting in an objective observation. However, it has been scientifically demonstrated that this is impossible. We cannot detach ourselves from our experiences, as the observer and observed are inseparably linked in part by the observer’s point of view. Quantum physics gives us a glimpse of how the mind transforms a field of infinite possibilities into what appears to be distinct forms. The observer within us is the conscious mind whose point of view is a network of well-defined ideas, beliefs, and memories about what we have established as reality. According to its conditioned concepts, the conscious mind projects definition and meaning onto a formless environment, limiting its infinite possibilities into a subset that we call “reality.” In this way, you can say that the mind transforms light (the formless) into matter and assigns meaning to that matter. As a result, the mind makes matter (any collection of atoms and molecules) matter (have significance). As long as we continue to strictly view our experiences through the lens of the conscious mind, we remain locked in a circuit of duality. By judging our experiences as good or bad, right or wrong, black or white, we become enmeshed in our illusion of being separate from what we experience “out there.” But as the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, states, “We do not see things as they are; we see them as we are” (Berakhot 55b). How we see ourselves is how we see the world. There is no experience without an experiencer. At the quantum level, nothing exists without an observer, for there simply is no reality independent of consciousness. So what is consciousness? For many people consciousness is limited to selfconsciousness, a state of being aware of oneself as well as one’s internal and external environment. Consciousness extends far beyond this, however, and must be delineated into its local and nonlocal expressions. Local consciousness is associated with the conscious mind, the everyday reality of form, ego, and choice created when a boundless universe is confined to a singular point of view. Nonlocal consciousness is associated with the unconscious mind, the formless, egoless, and choiceless infinite potential that exists before light is transformed into matter by the conscious mind’s point of view. The unconscious is unavailable for APRIL 2018

analysis because there is no separate “self” to observe it. In The Social Animal, American journalist David Brooks writes, “If the conscious mind is like a general atop a platform who sees the world from a distance and analyzes things linearly and linguistically, the unconscious mind is like a million little scouts. The scouts careen across the landscape, sending back a constant flow of signals and generating instant responses. They maintain no distance from the environment around them, but are immersed in it. They scurry about, interpenetrating other minds, landscapes and ideas.” We have all been conditioned to believe that we are in control of our lives. Yet most of what happens in life occurs outside our conscious awareness, and few things are within our control. According to physicist Amit Goswami, author of The Self-Aware Universe, “The conscious self is unconscious of most things most of the time — and of everything in dreamless sleep. Paradoxically, the unconscious is . . . conscious of all things all of the time. It never sleeps.” Literally trillions of processes take place in our bodies every second, and we are totally unaware of them. None of us has to remind our heart to beat, our body to breathe, or the trillions of cells within us to replenish themselves. None of us awakens the sun, moves the tides, or changes the seasons. Yet most of us place such importance on who we think we are and the ideas traversing our awareness that we forget that most of our life runs without our control or thought. Since the conscious mind of the ego and the unconscious mind of infinite potential are both aspects of our totality, why do we identify ourselves with the limited view of the conscious mind to the exclusion of the limitless view of the unconscious?

The Illusory Me

During early infancy, a child exists in a state that Sigmund Freud described as “oceanic bliss,” unaware of anything other than its own boundlessness. This state of pure awareness exists because an infant’s brain lacks the network of connections required to distinguish itself from the rest of the world. This innate lack of selfawareness demonstrates that we come into this world “hardwired” to experience oneness. As a baby gradually develops and interacts with its environment and the individuals within it, they become increasingly aware of the response to their actions by those around them. While certain behaviors are met with acceptance, others are frowned upon and, at times, penalized. This initially confusing experience eventually trains the child to monitor and modify their own way

of being in an attempt to “fit in” and behave in a way that is acceptable to those around them. “Self-talk” first emerges during this process of self-guidance and selfregulation of behavior. Over time this comforting inner dialogue takes on a personality all its own, giving rise to an individual sense of self and to the corresponding neural circuitry required to sustain the illusion that the child is different from those around them. As a result, their natural and effortless way of being is gradually replaced by a series of normal conditioned behaviors. As the youngster matures and becomes increasingly more accustomed to the voice of the “illusory” ego, this commentary takes on a larger role in their life. They become habituated to interacting with it and eventually accept it as the real and authentic expression of their uniqueness. The ego’s roots, now well established, disguise the youth’s boundless nature with this personality, whose self-importance convinces them that they are on their own and must make things happen. In an attempt to accomplish that, they habitually think ahead, hoping to control life by exerting their so-called free will.

Living in a Mind Field

This incessant pattern of worrying, planning, and rehearsing, which the Buddha referred to as monkey mind, becomes increasingly louder and more distracting as the individual tries to ensure that their actions are acceptable and their needs are met. The individual becomes so identified with the voice in their head that it transforms their mind into a hall of mirrors and their body into a living canvas of their thoughts. Ultimately our intrinsic cooperative nature is displaced by a more competitive lifestyle aimed at producing safety, security, and predictability. But since there are no safety nets in a world that is constantly changing, our efforts often result in a great deal of stress and feelings of emptiness because our reality does not match up with our mental paradigm. Based on the belief that we have free will, we assume there must be something wrong with us, or something we are doing or not doing that is interfering with our presumed ability to manifest the life we want. So we try to identify the problem, which is often blamed on one’s shadow, and to learn the secret of how to attract what we want so we can live a happy and successful life. We read book after book and attend workshop after workshop; we run in circles trying to chase away our shadow. But the faster we run, the faster our shadow follows us, never disappearing no matter what we do or where we go. If you saw someone chasing their shadow, 12

you would think that person was crazy. And yet this is precisely what we do when we assume something is wrong with us. What we call our shadow is nothing more than an aspect of our nature waiting to be embraced and reclaimed. One of the consequences of seeing the world through the conscious mind is that we judge everything . . . and that includes us. The idea that we are not enough the way we are is pernicious. Despite doing all the “right” things, such as meditating, eating right, and following a spiritual path — what we believe to be the recipe for enlightenment — real peace continues to elude us. I can truly relate to this formula, as I did many of these same things on my journey. Many of us spend our lives trying to become the person we think we would have been were all our pieces left intact. After years of camouflaging my life with degrees that were earned in hopes of convincing the world I was smart, someone said to me, “You’re constantly doing an impersonation of the person you already are.” Like a dog who finally catches the tail they have been chasing only to realize it was their own, I finally recognized that I already was the person I was trying to become. To quote T. S. Eliot, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” The idea of self-improvement sounds wonderful. Yet it is often based on the idea that something is wrong with us and that we are separate from everything else. So we do everything we can in order to change, not realizing that we, as an integral part of the universe, are continually evolving. In the words of Greek philosopher Heraclitus, the only “constant is change.” We feel that the obstacles we face on our journey to wholeness are self-created and limit our growth, not realizing that the stress and sense of confinement that we feel are actually what fuels our development and evolution. Consider how a lobster grows. A lobster is a spongy animal that lives in a rigid shell that does not expand. As the lobster grows its shell becomes uncomfortable and confining. To deal with this painful predicament, the lobster crawls under a rock where it feels safe from predatory fish, casts off its shell, and grows a new one. Throughout its life it repeats the process. Over and over again the lobster expands beyond its shell and goes into temporary safe seclusion until it develops a new shell that is secure and comfortable. Everything in life grows in the same way. A stressor is required to spur the evolutionary process. So when you

are uncomfortable it does not necessarily mean that you have done something wrong or are on the wrong track. It may just be the intelligence of life gently reminding you that it is time for change. A shadow is produced when an object blocks light. Whenever we block the light guiding our life, we create a shadow. Only when we are transparent and in alignment with the source of the light, as when the sun is directly overhead, does the shadow magically disappear. Our true awakening is the realization that nothing is wrong with us. We can only be who we already are in each moment. But this realization cannot be discovered while we look for it. It often comes when we least expect it. In 2002, while sitting on my couch, my eyes just gazing at the walls, I became aware of the intricate molding at the edge of the ceiling, the beautiful artwork on the walls, and the clean, clear Zen-like quality present in my home. The beauty I noticed was a reflection of the way I saw and responded to everything in my life at that time. Suddenly I felt as though honey was slowly being poured on the top of my head. I closed my eyes and noticed the sensation extending onto my forehead and temples. When it reached my eyes, tears began to flow

down my face. I was overcome with the realization that there was nothing wrong with me — there had never been anything wrong with me. It was a moment of unconditional acceptance, a spontaneous gift of grace. ۞ Dr. Jacob Israel Liberman, author of Luminous Life, is a pioneer in the fields of light, vision, and consciousness and the author of Light: Medicine of the Future and Take Off Your Glasses and See. The first rule is to choose Y foods that are as close to nature as possible.

By Dr. Patty Barber

You are what you eat… How many times have we heard that saying? Eat more veggies; eat more organic proteins and healthy fats. Limit salt, sugar and processed foods. No Bread!! No Gluten!! Thought leaders proclaim these are the keys to good health. Sounds simple, right? Well, actually, it can be confusing for everyone as the landscape of healthy eating changes before our eyes. In school, students have learned the pyramid or the plate to help them identify what they should be eating. As time went on, those concepts have been updated or fallen out of grace. Counting Calories of the 1980’s didn’t help as much as we thought and some people still rely solely on this method. Not all calories are the same nutritionally. The fat free craze of the 1990’s sounded like a good choice; however, our bodies need healthy fats in order to work properly. The Atkins diet, all protein and no carbs, took off at the turn of the century but couldn’t be sustained for long term use. Our Body uses Carbohydrates as its preferred method of fuel. People still cry over the loss of their pound of daily bacon. 14

Cholesterol reduction of the early 2000 until recently was the latest of choices but, in actuality, our body needs cholesterol. 25% of the body’s utilization is in the brain. If you starve your body of healthy cholesterol, what do you think will happen? Brain Fog, forgetfulness, joint issues and alzheimer’s like symptoms have all been contributed to these choices. Now we are hearing diet terms like Ketogenic, Paleo, Inflammation free and let’s not forget Mediterranean. Is it enough to make your head spin while in the supermarket aisles? How do you know what you should be eating and what is good for you? As a Doctor of Natural Medicine and an Advanced Digestive Health Professional, who works with clients on their dietary intake and food choices, I see that many people do not make the direct correlation of their health, how they feel or even how they behave to what they eat. The first thing to understand is that the food you provide your body can either nourish it or slowly begin to poison it. Wooo. Yes, I said poison, and I’m not making that up just to get your attention. When we eat foods that our body can’t properly digest, we actually have the immune system’s white blood cells dispatched to head these foods off in the blood when the digestive system is unable to do its job. It’s called Digestive Leukocytosis. Now the white blood cells can only do so much on our

The NorthEastern Holistic Resource

APRIL 2018

behalf to finish digestion not completed in the GI tract. The nasty chemicals that are in the foods from the pesticides and GMO components can be stored within the fat cells because the body doesn’t know what to do with them. It’s up to each of us to find the foods that are good for the body so they don’t become a toxin that can hurt us. The reactions to these foods can be within a wide range. Most people recognize the stomach pain and diarrhea as tell tale signs of foods they need to stay away from, but there are so many more identifiers that are often overlooked. Brain fog, fatigue, aches and pains in the body regardless of age, inability to concentrate or sit still, stuffy noses, headaches or migraines, skin rashes, dry skin, rashes, insomnia and the list goes on… Have you made the connection of symptoms to the disese of your body? Choose a wide range of healthy organics fruits, vegetables, meats, grains and fish. The first rule is to choose foods that are as close to nature as possible. These should make up the majority of your daily intake. This means fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables which still have their enzymes intact. These natural enzymes will help the body to predigest the food so these foods can be utilized more efficiently. Genetically Modified, canned and processed foods have the enzymes removed to help sustain shelf life of the product. Our body hasn’t caught up to the last 100+ years of scientific changes to be able to recognize and use the foods in our packaged, canned and freezer aisles not to mention the fast food restaurants. When the weather is nice, grow your own garden or frequent the farmers market where fresh foods are found. Stay around the outside perimeter of most markets as these are where the real foods you should be eating are found. Avoid the maze of the supermarket middle aisles which will entrance your taste buds into foods you should not eat. Many of these middle aisle, pre-packaged, foods that will last until the next ice age are considered fake foods because they will not give your body the proper nutrients it seeks. If you don’t understand the words on the ingredients list, don’t buy the product. Next, choose healthy proteins. The debate is still on about whether it’s healthier to be a meat eater or vegetarian; each having their benefits for the right individual. Blood Types can contribute to your body’s needs for protein sources. O Blood Types tend to need more meat where Blood Type A’s tend to do better with a vegetarian diet. Again, understand which choice is best for your specific body type. Milk and dairy sources are another concern. 95%

of the population are actually unable to properly digest cow dairy products. The cow dairy molecules are too large for the body to digest. Look at goat or sheep dairy products as well as nut milks and cheeses. There is a large variety of these alternatives popping up in the markets to choose from without giving up the foods you enjoy. Complex Carbohydrates including vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and beans should be an addition to the diet. Carbohydrates are the body’s first choice as an energy source. Complex Carbohydrates supply the body with natural sugar and fiber. Most individuals do not get enough fiber within their daily food choices. Fiber can help you feel full as well as regulate your digestion. Refrain from processed white flour, processed sugar and artificial sweeteners. Enriched white flour or processed flour really is not enriched at all. It has been stripped of its important nutrients and through a refinement process adds back components that would not be considered healthy for the body. Chemicals, additives, preservatives and bleaching are added to the process of enriching white flour; healthy fiber is virtually eliminated. When we consume large amounts of the processed flours and sugars, our body does not reach satiety. The individual then eats more of foods with these types of ingredient because the body is not receiving the nutrients it needs. Processed sugar is eight times more addicting than cocaine but can easily be found on many shelves and hidden in numerous food products. It’s often the second or third ingredient of the list for processed foods. The ending ‘-ose’ tends to give the processed sugar away but manufacturers are becoming very savvy to label readers. Could this be why there are over 50 terms for sugar listed on our processed foods? Artificial sweeteners are not any better and can have their own list of health concerns associated with them. Use natural choices for sweeteners such as stevia, maple syrup and honey. If you have a sweet tooth, look for health recipe alternatives to traditional baking. One of my favorite websites: has wonderful desserts without the guilt of unhealthy ingredients. Eliminate heavily processed white table salt. Our body doesn’t know what to do with it or how to digest it. Instead use the Himalayan pink salt which has natural minerals and trace elements to provide an added benefit to the body while enriching the flavor of foods. Without placing a label on “diet”, the above are simple to understand solutions to modify your food Continued on page 30

In The Spotlight

Dr. Marcia S. Kesten

Dr. Kesten is a chiropractor and consitutional homeopath. Her practice is in East Smithfield, PA about 20 miles South of the New York border off Rt 220. Dr. Kesten has been practicing Chiropractic since 1981, and Homeopathy since the mid 90’s. Her style of chiropractic is eclectic and after all these years could be called the Kesten technique! Even while in chiropractic school, she studied Activator Methods, which is a gentle technique, using leg checks to determine where to adjust and a hand mallet to adjust with. She still uses an instrument in her practice today. Theoretically, the least amount of force used in an adjustment to affect a change will produce the most desirable effect. She also uses Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique (B.E.S.T) . B.E.S.T. helps symptoms that are due to cellular memory. According to Dr. Ted Morter, chiropractor, the developer of B.E.S.T, at least 80% of health issues are due to memory. Due to the feedback mechanism in the body, the brain is constantly receiving sensory information. When a person sustains physical or emotional trauma, there is a breakdown in the feedback mechanism and the brain receives only trauma feedback. B.E.S.T. breaks this loop and allows the brain to pickup appropriate information to allow the patient to heal more effectively. In addition, she uses Applied Kinesiolgy (A.K). Currently, she applies A.K for specific muscle testing in painful areas which helps her discover the cause of the patient’s pain. Is it the spine? Is it the muscle itself.. or a combination. 18

Dr. Kesten is certified in Acupoint Physical Medicine. Although she does not use needles for treatment, she is familiar with the acupuncture meridians and treatment points which she treats through pressure or a laser pointer. She uses a computer program which assesses the microcurrent passing through the meridians. Energy can be deficient, excessive or even split ( at least 20 points difference between the two sides). She balances what she finds. Dr. Kesten is also a proponent of eating according to blood type and offers guidance in that. She has blood typing kits available in her office and will do the testing upon request. Dr. Kesten is a constitutional homeopath. Homeopathy is a form of energy medicine based on a law of similars. The doctor researches to find something from a plant, mineral, or animal source that could cause the patient’s symptoms if given to a healthy individual. The patient is given that product called a remedy. The remedy has been diluted to a point where no substance is left, just pure energy. Dr. Kesten has studied Homeopathic medicine with Rajan Sankaran and Jayesh Shah, two reknowned homeopaths from Mumbai, India. Before taking a case, the prospective patient fills out a 27 page case history form. This provides the patient the opportunity to be introspective, which is very important for the case-taking process. During the case-taking, the patient feels more like they are in a psychologist’s office, as Dr. Kesten must pry deeply to solve the case. Once she finds the right remedy, the results can be miraculous! Find Dr. Kesten in the Resource Directory under either Chiropractic (page 26) or Homeopothy (page 27).

What’s In The Stars? By Life Counselor Aynne McAvoy

Happy April 2018 to you! Let’s get started, there is lots to talk about this month! Of course we start the month off with Easter Sunday falling on April 1st or April Fool’s Day. Is the Universe messing with us? The last time this happened was 1956! We are still under that old Mercury Retrograde thing until mid April, on April 15. Yeah. Tax day. (Once again, is the Universe messing with us?) It doesn’t turn direct until AFTER tax day, so please make sure all your ducks are in a row on your paperwork, you have all your receipts and sign your return! Mercury retrograde is classic for messing up anything to do with communications, which of course includes correct phone numbers, email addresses, and yes, tax paperwork sent by either email OR US Mail. Jupiter continues its retrograde in Scorpio which dulls down its normally bright cheery energy. We see that Saturn, the planet of discipline, will be turning retrograde on April 17 and a few hours later followed up by a Venus in Taurus opposition to Jupiter in Scorpio. As I’ve said before, Jupiter in Scorpio is not a good fit to begin with, and now adding an opposition (working against each other.) So lovely Venus in the determined and stubborn sign of Taurus in opposition to cranky Jupiter in Scorpio - hmm. What could go wrong? However, Saturn turning retrograde gives each of us a chance to reevaluate our circumstances around us, and see if we can do better. Pluto goes retrograde in Capricorn on April 22. I am thinking this is a plus for all of us. A little less intensity might be a welcome change for a while! Speaking of intensity, the eight years of the challenges presented to all of us from the Pluto in Capricorn square Uranus in Aries aspect is finally coming to an end! Uranus will be entering Taurus and Pluto will be turning retrograde as they finally part APRIL 2018

ways. The strain and stress that this duo has caused is a lot like an overstuffed bag that looks like it will explode at the seams any time. We just don’t know how much more it can take. Finally, we are looking to get some relief here with the pressure easing off. However, because this aspect is in its last moments, it is not without some possible final fireworks. We never should take our eyes off Uranus for long; that planet of sudden and unexpected events. By the way, Uranus is a very slow moving planet. It usually stays in each sign approximately 7 years, which means it hasn’t been in Taurus in 84 years! The last time Uranus was in Taurus was in 1934! On one hand the great depression was coming to a close, but on the other hand Hitler was coming into power. Leaving you with a more upbeat note, there will be a trine between Jupiter in Scorpio (R) and Neptune in Pisces that will be with us for the next several months. Trines are always pleasant to begin with. Jupiter of course is the big happy planet of excess and Neptune the planet of dreams. We are being encouraged to dream big, and to follow our dreams! ۞ As always, take what you need and leave the rest. Aynne McAvoy is a psychic astrologer in Palm Coast, Florida. Ask Aaron About Feng Shui & Life - by Aaron Lee Koch BOYFRIEND GONE, HER LOVE LIVES ON Dear Aaron, About a month ago, my boyfriend of two years suddenly announced that he was moving out and that our relationship was over. I didn’t even know we had a problem! He swore that he hadn’t met anyone else, he said he still loved me, but that he was too young to be tied down (he’s 27) and he needed “space”. Needless to say, I was devastated. After a few days, I realized that I had not done anything to drive him away and the situation says a lot more about what’s going on inside of him then between him and me. I’m comfortable with that, and I’m prepared to go on with my life. In fact, I have a very positive attitude about things. I do feel just a bit sorry for him, as I honestly believe he could never find as loving a girlfriend as I was. The issue is the following. I realize he is not good for me in terms of a relationship, but I still love him. We live in a small town and cannot avoid running into each other. We also know many of the same people. Several times, I called or texted him just to say hi and ask how he’s doing. Sometimes he ignores me, and sometimes he responds. He says he’s doing fine and is happy with his decision. Now I don’t know how true that is or is not. But, I feel this strong need to take care of him, and to love him. I don’t have any expectations of him, and I don’t expect or even want him to come back to me. Nevertheless, I do care about how he’s doing, I want to know if there’s any way I can help him or take care of him. Am I crazy for not hating him? Should I really be avoiding him like the plague? C.B., Cortland, NY Dear C.B.,

Yet, as long as you really have no expectations of him, I think your response is very healthy. Every relationship has ups and downs, and people for one reason or another find things hard to deal with. Very often, with good constructive communication, things can be worked out, solutions can be reached, and the couple can become even stronger together. Your boyfriend walking out, without regard to your feelings, shows that he is not ready for a deeply loving and caring relationship, and he is not on your level emotionally. After sharing your heart with this man for over two years, I can totally understand that you still love him. Real love doesn’t get turned on or turned off because someone does or doesn’t do the right thing. Your love for him, and your “lovingness” in general, is an expression of who YOU are. You are right to not have expectations of this man, and you should not want to change him.

The kind of person who would walk out on you so abruptly and callously, is not someone in who to invest your future and your hopes. However, there is no reason to let his bad actions change you! Be your loving self! If you see him, or feel like calling him or texting him, do what feels right to you. The only time this could become a problem is if you develop expectations of him. Otherwise, remember that love is not a commodity that runs out. The more love you share, the more love you will have to give. The more love you give, the more love you will attract into your life.

Dear Aaron,

I want to sell my home. I’ve heard of a saint that, when its statue is buried, helps to make a sale. Is there a contradiction between Feng Shui and the Christian saints? Can a saint actually help sell the house? Which one? Beatriz, Binghamton, NY Dear Beatriz, Feng Shui is not a religion nor is it in conflict with the practice of any faith or belief system. Feng Shui is the science and art of working with the “chi” or natural earth energies that surround us in our homes and in our workplaces. There is no conflict between the practice of Feng Shui and the adoration of saints, Christian or otherwise. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is venerated in many different Christian traditions as Saint Joseph. For the last several decades, a belief has gone around that a statue of St. Joseph, buried upside down and 1 foot deep, helps to get a house sold. There are even special home selling prayers, and Catholic novenas, that are believed to encourage the statue to do its job. These can be found on the internet. Here is one concern that I have. Some of the “home selling prayers” to Saint Joseph tell him that he will stay in an uncomfortable position (upside-down) until the house is sold, and then he will be given relief. To me, that sounds like something out of the Spanish Inquisition, and it is not an approach that I would be comfortable taking. I do not believe in torturing anyone ever, and that includes putting a statue in an “uncomfortable” position. Why not try giving the statue a place of honor on your property and asking for assistance with a home sale? APRIL 2018

Does it really work? I have met many people who say that it (the traditional upside-down method) worked beautifully and quickly for them, so who knows? Try it and let me know! ۞ Aaron Lee Koch is a Master of Classical Feng Shui, author of “Feng Shui Secrets for Glowing Health, Serious Wealth and Great Relationships” and “Feng Shui Q&A”, and Founder of The American School of Classical Feng Shui.
