The Orphan of Zhao July 8–August 3 New adaptation by James Fenton Directed by Carey Perloff In the aftermath of a violent coup, a young orphan discovers the shattering truth of his origins. Often described as the Chinese Hamlet, this riveting tale was the first Chinese play to be translated in the West and has inspired countless operas, plays and movies.

The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel and arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. On each evening of the Festival of Arts summer schedule, ticket holders are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (living pictures), incredibly faithful recreations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. Footloose–The Musical, one of the most explosive movie musicals of all time, bursts onto the STAR Theatre stage this summer! Based on the original movie, Footloose tells the story of a lively city boy, Ren, who moves to a small town where dancing has been banned by a preacher determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. After the culture shock sets in, Ren tries to gain support from his friends to overturn the ban, and while doing so, he catches the attention of the preacher’s daughter.

Footlose is a heartfelt story of a father longing for the son he’s lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. The incredible pop/rock score features such hits as Let’s Hear It for the Boy, Almost Paradise, Holding Out for a Hero, and the hit title song by Kenny Loggins that brings audiences to their feet – Footloose. The STAR Theatre Company Presents Footloose July 18–27

June – July, Every Thursday, 4:30-8pm Pack up the kids and enjoy some outdoor fun at Thursday Family Fun Nights at the San Diego Botanic Garden from 4:30 to 8 pm, through August 28. Each Thursday the Garden comes alive with family-oriented activities and entertainment designed to amuse both adults and children. The party continues with live, kid-friendly entertainment from 6–7pm, including San Diego’s own Hullabaloo, performing July 17 and August 28. Other artists that are featured in the Garden under the stars include: Zimbeat, featuring tunes from Zimbabwe and Kenya; Clint Perry and the Boo Hoo Crew; Kristen Cook; Tall Tales with Mary Roper; the YMCA Dance Team and Buck Howdy.
