PERFORMING AT A CLASSICAL CONCERT IN 2007

Dear friends, For nearly 16 years, I have had the incredible honor of serving as Music Director of the North Carolina Symphony. It has been my great joy to share inspiring music throughout this state, including here in Southern Pines — all the while, forming friendships with the musicians of our orchestra, with our guest artists, and with you, our devoted community. In crafting programs for the 2019/20 season — my final as Music Director — I feel sure that NCS will only continue to soar higher. We'll perform ambitious repertoire, reflecting our musicians' ever-growing artistry; and we'll bring remarkable guest soloists and conductors to our stage, confirming the Symphony's excellence today and going forward. This season at Lee Auditorium, we celebrate the music that moves us, the artists who bring it to life, and the future of this great orchestra — don’t miss a moment. With deep gratitude, GRANT LLEWELLYN, MUSIC DIRECTOR NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY

ENIGMA VARIATIONS

RACHMANINOFF SYMPHONY NO. 2

SUN, OCT 13, 2019 | 3PM

SUN, SEPT 29, 2019 | 3PM

Rune Bergmann, conductor Philippe Quint, violin

Mozart: Symphony No. 31 “Paris” G. Williams: Sea Sketches Elgar: “Enigma” Variations

Barber: Violin Concerto Chaplin: Suite for Violin and Orchestra Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 2

Opening Night begins with Mozart's grand Symphony No. 31, which made him the toast of Paris. Elgar's "Enigma" Variations share musical portraits of friends and family with humor, tenderness, and sweeping emotion. The Symphony's ongoing commitment to music by women composers continues with the gorgeous Sea Sketches by Grace Williams, depicting the Welsh coast.

Philippe Quint’s jaw-dropping virtuosity and poetic artistry both shine in the Barber Violin Concerto’s lightning-fast moments and lush, song-like passages. His violin also sings Charlie Chaplin favorites, which Quint had a hand in arranging for his latest album. This program builds to a triumphant conclusion with Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, known as his “victory symphony.”
