more organized the space, the more you want to be in it.” Know what to keep and what to throw out, adds Barry. If you bring something new into the study space, perhaps it’s time to get rid of something old. Barry also suggests keeping a clock and a calendar in the room to reinforce organization and time management. “Make sure it’s an analog clock,” adds Dubyak. That way your kids can start to gauge how time passes and really see what 15 minutes or an hour means.

If your child prefers a traditional study space, but your budget is tight, a new desk does not have to break your piggy bank. “You can create a desk with two construction horses and a board,” says Seyavash Zohoori, academic director for Interior Design at The Art Institute of Salt Lake City. The best part is that this desk is mobile, so if your child wants a change of scenery, moving the study space is a snap. But do invest in a chair with good lumbar support. Once you settle on a comfortable spot, remove the distractions, like the TV. Also, get rid of one of the biggest distractions of all - clutter. A

And make sure you have enough and the right kind of light to get work done. If your kids study when they get home from school in the afternoon, natural light may be best, says Zohoori. What if the kids study when the sun goes down? “Invest in an LED or even OLED light,” he suggests. “They are eco-friendly and can significantly cut down on the eye strain you’ll get with fluorescents.” To learn about The Art Institutes schools, visit

Keep winter’s chill from leaking into your warm house (ARA) - Drafty attics, fireplaces, leaky windows and open vents provide the perfect opportunity for winter’s chill to sneak into your house and have you shivering from the cold. Not only does this cause you to huddle under extra layers of clothing and heavy blankets, but also probably has you spending more money than you want turning up the thermostat. Drafts, such as those around doors, windows and pipes, are the largest source of heating and cooling loss in the home. Most homeowners tackle the easy leaks by caulking and weather-stripping to minimize energy loss and drafts. But what can you do about drafts from the four largest “holes” in your home - the folding attic stair, the whole house fan, the fireplace and the clothes dryer? Here are some tips and techniques that can quickly, easily and inexpensively seal and insulate these often overlooked holes: Attic stairs Installing attic stairs creates a large hole (approximately 10 square feet) in your ceiling. The ceiling and insulation that were there have to be

removed, leaving only a thin, unsealed, sheet of plywood. Often you can see a gap around the perimeter of the attic door. Check out your home’s

tioned air is leaking through these large gaps in your home 24 hours a day. This is like leaving a window or skylight open year-

round. An easy solution to this problem is to add an insulated attic stair cover. An attic stair cover seals the stairs to stop drafts and energy loss. Add the desired amount of insulation over the cover to restore the insulation removed from the ceiling. Whole house fans and air conditioning vents Much like attic stairs above, installing a whole house fan creates a large hole (up to 16 square feet or larger) in your ceiling. The ceiling and insulation that were there have to be removed, leaving only the drafty ceiling shutter between you and the outdoors. An easy, low-cost solution to this problem is to add a whole house fan shutter seal. Made from white textured flexible insulation, the shutter seal is installed over the ceiling shutter, secured

Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 with Velcro and trimmed to fit. The shutter seal can also be used to seal and insulate air conditioning vents, and is easily removed when you need to run the fan.

Fireplaces More than 100 million homes in North America are constructed with wood- or gasburning fireplaces. However, fireplaces can be big energy wasters. Fireplaces can act like a giant straw, sucking your expensive heated or air-conditioned air right up the chimney and out of your house. In addition, sometimes odors, toxins, noise and insects come into the house through the chimney. Fireplaces often have dampers that are meant to be shut when the fireplace is not used. However, even if the damper is shut it is not air-tight. Glass doors don’t stop the drafts either. One study has shown that an open damper on an

unused fireplace in a well-insulated house can raise overall heating-energy consumption by 30 percent. Your heating bills may be more than $500 higher per winter due to the drafts and wasted energy caused by fireplaces. An easy, cost efficient solution to this problem is to add a fireplace plug to your fireplace. Available from Battic Door, a company known for their energy conservation products, the fireplace plug is an

inflatable pillow that seals the fireplace damper, eliminating drafts, odors and noise. The pillow is easily removed whenever the fireplace is used, then reinserted after. Clothes dryer exhaust ducts In many homes, the room with the clothes dryer is the coldest room in the house. Your clothes dryer is connected to an exhaust duct that is open to the outdoors. In the winter, cold drafts come in through

Because It’s Your Home and You Deserve The Best!

the duct, through your dryer and into your house.

An easy, low-cost solution to this problem is to add a dryer vent seal. This draft blocker will also keep out pests, bees and rodents. The vent will remain closed unless the dryer is in use. When the dryer is in use, a floating shuttle rises to allow warm air, lint and moisture to escape. To learn more about Battic Door’s energy conservation solutions and products for your home, visit, or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to P.O. Box 15, Mansfield, MA 02048.

Artful design pairings create a culinary paradise in your kitchen (ARA) - Just as matching food with the right wine can elevate a simple meal to the level of a culinary experience, artfully pairing design elements in your kitchen can turn a utilitarian room into a chef’s paradise. “Properly pairing food and wine that complement each other is always a key ingredient in serving a memorable meal,” says Teo Zagroba, Beverage Manager at The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wis. “It’s equally important to ensure that key design elements in your kitchen pair together well, creating a room that is functional, beautiful and inspiring.” Just as you would seek wine selection advice from a sommelier, it pays to get some design pairing tips from a kitchen expert. Diana Schrage, senior interior designer at the Kohler Design Center, offers these tips for making successful design pairing decisions for your kitchen: Sinks and faucets “The experience of cooking in a kitchen where function and beauty are paramount can be as delightful as the gourmet meal itself,” Schrage says. “Think of this when beginning

flooring choices. A neutral backdrop like cream walls or gray slate floor tile can give countertops and cabinets the room they need to really pop. The pinnacle of pairings Once your design pairings are complete and you’ve created your dream kitchen, you can focus on some even more enjoyable matches, creating gourmet meals perfectly paired with the right beveryour kitchen redesign.” You may already have a sink or a faucet in mind and can use either piece as your starting point. Identify what it is about this particular sink or faucet that appeals to you so the direction of your redesign becomes clearer and clearer. If your faucet preference runs toward sleek, modern lines, you’ll want to pair it with a sink that complements that design aesthetic such as stainless steel or a contemporary-looking and under mounted cast iron product. If you love the farmhouse-classic apron front sink consider a nostalgic faucet design evocative of this time period; perhaps even a wall mount instead of deck mount faucet. Color and finish are

also key considerations for sink and faucet pairings. Will the color of your sink complement the finish of the faucet? Some sink finishes, like stainless, or enameled cast iron, will allow more flexibility when choosing a faucet to go with it. Always, keep function in mind. Both your sink and faucet should work well together for their intended uses. For example, if you’ve selected a tall pull-down faucet like the KOHLER Bellera because you’ll be filling a lot of stock pots or washing large pans, a deep-bowl sink will match that function better than a shallow one. Cabinets and countertops Design harmony is also important when

you’re matching countertops and cabinets. You may have always loved the look of stainless steel, but if your cabinets are clearly country, the warm colors and solid looks of a cast iron sink may be a better fit. If you have the luxury of choosing both elements to match, your design job will be easier. But if you’re committed to the cabinets you already have, then consider countertop materials that are timeless and universal, like granite or marble. Even if the design of your cabinets ties you into a specific material choice, remember you’ll have plenty of color options available. If your countertop and/or cabinet choice makes a bold design statement, avoid pairing it with distracting wall or

ages. Fortunately, you’ll find no shortage of inspiration. From culinary shows and foodie blogs to epicurean events like the Kohler Food & Wine Experience at The American Club Resort, there are numerous resources to learn more about great kitchen design and perfect food and wine pairings, both of which will make your kitchen and next dinner party the envy of all your friends.

Selling your home out of season? A great deck makes a difference (ARA) - In a perfect world, no one would ever have to face the challenge of trying to sell a house when there’s snow on the ground and the trees are bare. In reality, people have to sell and buy homes throughout the year. While winter may not be the optimum season to showcase your landscaping, there is one improvement you can make that will help you boost your home’s outdoor appeal no matter what the season: a deck. When potential buyers visit your home in winter, they might not be able to envision how green and lovely your backyard will look come spring. But they will be able to see with their own eyes the square footage that a deck adds to the home’s living space. Decks, patios, sunrooms and porches have always been popular with home buyers, but real estate agents say that too often those spaces are neglected or not used to their best advantage. Yet outdoor improvements like a deck can significantly enhance your home’s value and appeal. In fact, at the time of resale, a deck will

Decorative railings with ornate balusters, post cap and postcovers can give virtually any wood or composite lumber deck a distinctive look for a modest investment. “More than ever before, people look at their decks as outdoor entertainment areas,” says Chris Fox of Universal Forest Products, producers of Latitudes Composite decking and Railing and Deckorators, a leader in decking railing systems and deck accessories. “For some, it’s a kitchen; for others, a living room. Decks can be party spaces or quiet retreats. With so many different types of deck materials, lighting, rail systems and decorative accents, it’s possible to turn a plain deck into a great outdoor space.” “Potential home buyers always react positively to nice decks that look like a great place to hang out,” says Harrison. “From a buyer’s perspective, if all else is equal, it’s true that the home with the best deck wins.”

on Cies was a man of vision. Where people saw nothing but fields west of Interstate 35, he saw an area with potential for exceptional homes and businesses to meet Norman’s growing needs. He named his first development, Brookhaven. Don began a real estate brokerage in 1962 at 1203 Brookhaven Blvd. That original location continues today. Although originally created to market Brookhaven homes, Don Cies Real Estate, Inc. soon began to “sell ALL of Norman” and properties throughout Central Oklahoma. When he decided it was time to expand, he opened a second office at 424 W. Main Street to meet Norman’s growing real estate needs. When townhomes were a little known concept in Norman, Don developed one of the Southwest’s premiere townhome developments, Brookhaven Square, of which he was exceptionally proud. Don didn’t limit his vision to the west side of I-35. He saw a need for development in east Norman as well. Summit Lakes filled a strong demand for single family homes. Along with Summit Lakes, Don offered more housing choices with Summit Lake Villas, a gated townhome development, as well as the country estate homes of Blue Creek Estates and the great location of Summit Valley. In addition to real estate sales and development, Don started his own building company, Homes of Distinction. His desire to provide people with the home of their dreams was something that he cultivated through the years, resulting in one of Norman’s premier building companies. As one of Norman’s early real estate pioneers, Don was instrumental in creating the Norman Multi-Listing Services, a system of sharing information about real estate property among real estate professionals. He was a member of the Norman Board of Realtors,

Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club He was a Sooner Centurion and served as President of the Norman Builders Association. A devoted family man, Don enjoyed traveling with his wife, Patty, and looking for inspiration in the homes and developments he admired abroad Don & Patty Cies and bringing that diversity back to Norman. Painting was another part of Don’s life; he was particularly fond of painting landscapes and Southwest themes. Don also cared about his “brokerage family,” the Realtors and employees. He was a man easy to be loyal to because he exemplified integrity. He didn’t take shortcuts, and he didn’t say things that couldn’t be proven. As busy as his many projects kept him, he still took time to make certain everyone was taken care of. He was often observed asking clients waiting for an appointment with someone if he could get them anything. It was always Don’s wish for the business to keep moving forward in the unlikely event that something might happen to him. In honoring his wishes, Evan Nixon, President, and Marilyn Bourlier, Vice President of The Cies Companies, will carry on the developments that Don began nearly 50 years ago. Tom McAuliffe, Vice President and managing broker of Don Cies Real Estate will continue real estate sales along with the rest of our Don Cies Real Estate family. Randy Peterson, Vice President of the building company, Homes of Distinction, will remain building custom and speculative homes throughout Norman. It is our hope that in continuing what Don started, we can honor his memory for many years to come.

Reclaim your garage in a weekend (ARA) - Is your garage dingy, cluttered and in need of a facelift? Transforming it into a “showroom” for your car, reclaiming it for a workshop, playroom or man cave isn’t difficult. All it takes is a weekend and a little elbow grease. “Many homeowners view the garage as an extension of the home not just a place to store the lawn mower,” says Rust-Oleum brand manager, Mark Wilgen. “A clean, well organized garage can provide extra living space, as well as add value to a home. And, reclaiming it can be a fun weekend project families can do together.” Here’s how to get started: Get rid of the clutter. Remove outdoor furniture, sports equipment, lawn mowers and garage clutter. Bag the

trash, donate too-small bikes and other items you no longer need and decide what will go back in the garage after your work is done. If you’re like most homeowners, you’ll gain a lot of space by clearing the clutter. Paint the walls. Most homeowners don’t think about painting the walls of their garage. Yet, a coat of ordinary latex paint can go a long way in brightening the space and giving it a finished look. If the garage has never been painted - or it’s been painted with porous builders’ flat paint - make sure you prime first with a quality primer like Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. It will seal the surface for a better paint job and you’ll use less paint. Don’t forget the floor. Sweep it clean. Then remove dirt, oil or grease spots using a cleaner/degreaser and a

stiff bristle brush and rinse thoroughly. To give your garage a showroomquality floor that will make you the talk of your neighborhood, finish it with a coating specifically formulated for garage floors like RustOleum Garage Floor Coating. It will protect the floor against gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil, salt and hot tire pick-up and makes it simple to keep clean. And it’s easy to apply. Just mix the two-part system, allow the mixture to stand according to label directions and then apply it in 4 by 4 foot sec-

tions. Toss the decorative paint chips as you finish each section and you’re done. It’s time to organize. From shelving to workbenches to storage pieces designed for

sports equipment, there is a plethora of garage storage options available to help you get organized. Visit your local hardware store to find the best option for your needs. You’ll be sur-

prised how a little organization can maximize your garage space. For more information on garage projects, floor finishing tips and techniques, visit

Fast fixes for fabulous furniture (ARA) - Are you tired of your table? Is your dresser looking drab? Don’t worry - it’s easy to update your current furniture with a coat of paint and have it looking fabulous in no time. “We all have furniture that is either outdated or worn, but we’re just not ready to invest in new,” says Katherine Merkle, Krylon brand manager, Townhomes /Condos

“Luckily, with a bit of spray paint - especially a version that’s paint and primer in one - it’s simple to revitalize your current pieces to make them lovely and enjoyable, and for only a few dollars.” In fact, homeowners can find inspiration to update their home by visiting a variety of websites, including m or Both offer step-by-step project directions, such as this unique table and chairs project. Materials needed: table and chairs, Krylon Dual paint and primer spray paint in two complementary colors (example: Regal Blue and Khaki), a screwdriver, painter’s tape and a

drop cloth. Instructions: • Set up a well-ventilated spray area by covering a flat work surface and the floor with a drop cloth. • Disassemble the table top and chair bases from the legs and then clean all surfaces. • Cover or fill screw holes with small pieces of tape so that paint does not clog the holes. • To paint the table top, turn it upside down and first paint the bottom surface. • Once it’s dry, turn the table top right side up and elevate it by 2 to 3 inches to ensure coverage of the edges. • When painting the chairs, begin by inverting them and painting the bottom sides first. Be

sure to paint from every side so that you don’t miss any surface. Allow to dry completely, turn right side up and finish painting from each side. • To paint the base of the table, spray one side

at a time, allowing it to dry in between. • Finally, closely inspect each piece before you reassemble to make sure that the surfaces are fully covered. In a short time, and

with minimal investment, you can create a table and chairs that look like new. For more information on other projects or products from Krylon, visit
