A Legacy of Learning

rom studying new surgical techniques to learning how to fly, Dr. Robert Spector was a lifeFlong learner. His love of education was one of the reasons his wife, Billie Spector, established the Dr. Robert Spector Memorial Scholarship Fund. “Robert loved to teach. As head surgery resident in Dallas, he would mentor interns in surgery and teach them how to interact with patients,” said Ms. Spector. “He would teach our children how to use tools in the garage. He taught students at the local vo-tech school. He even trained our hunting dogs! He was always so patient and never got in a hurry.” Robert Spector joined the Norman Regional Hospital surgical staff in 1974 and was a respected colleague and caring and compassionate surgeon until his plane accident in 2005. “I wanted to establish a scholarship in his memory for education. He would appreciate knowing there is a scholarship for people continuing to learn.”

The scholarship assists in meeting the costs of tuition, books, and supplies for deserving students pursuing education related to health care careers at an accredited college, university or technology center. “I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of the prestigious NRHS Foundation Spector Scholarship. Being recognized for my dedication to patient care is both a reward and inspirational motivation for me to continue as a patient care provider,” said two-time scholarship recipient, Melanie Newcomer. ”I am so thankful for the opportunity to have met Mrs. Billie Spector and to learn about her personally and the beautiful and supportive life she shared with Dr. Spector. This scholarship has provided me the opportunity and encouragement to fulfill my dream to become an optometric physician.” To learn more about establishing a scholarship fund, please contact the Norman Regional Health Foundation at 405/307-1077.
