Fall 2016

Healthcare in School

As children spend most of their waking hours in school, health assistants are on the front lines in the battle to keep them healthy. Norman Regional Health Foundation is proud to partner with the Norman Public School district to provide funding for this school nurse/health program. This service would not be possible without unique partnerships and community support. “I’m not only the mother of a child with Type 1 Diabetes (T1d), but also a registered nurse. So, I understand the demands, the skill and the accuracy it takes for a Norman Public School health assistant to care for a child with T1d. She is in charge of helping my son stay safe during any physical activity by providing carbohydrates to balance his drop in blood sugar. She helps my son check his glucose levels and provides suitable measures to keep him safe. The health assistant helps my son every day at lunch input the correct information in his insulin pump to assure a safe delivery of medication. I cannot stress the importance of having trained and well educated staff at schools across the district so all kids have the same opportunities, whether they struggle with a health care need or not. If the nursing service and dedication of the staff at my son’s school was absent, I would not feel confident to have my son attend public schools. He would absolutely be at risk of danger both in short term effects (i.e. low blood sugar seizures and high blood sugar coma) and long term effects (blindness, amputation, early death). Thank you, a million times thank you, for providing funds that offer a safety net for my son while at school. I cannot put into words how much of an impact it has made in our lives.” Amy Edwards Mother of three Norman school children

Lions of Oklahoma and Lions Clubs International Foundation Support Moore Lions around the world are united by a great spirit of giving and dedication to serving others. Their generosity extended to Moore, OK after the 2013 tornado devastated the community and Moore Medical Center. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and Lions Club Oklahoma awarded a $253,000 grant to Norman Regional Health Foundation in order to provide the Health System and the Moore community with a state of the art conference center at the newly completed Norman Regional Moore. The contribution was earmarked for furniture and audio visual systems for the three conference rooms. “One of our first guests to utilize the Education Center was the Lions District 3-H Cabinet in July. I am pleased we could host their meeting, so they could appreciate their contributions firsthand,” said Norman Regional Foundation Director Erin Barnhart. “Since that time we have hosted trainings, youth meetings and blood drives. We are fortunate to have this quality space and equipment, which was made possible by the Lions’ generous gift.” “The Lions of Oklahoma are proud of the partnership created with Norman Regional Moore. Disaster Relief is a core focus of Lions Clubs International; it is obviously very important in this area,” said Troy Jenkins, Oklahoma Lions Disaster Relief Committee Chair. “Everything we have been able to do was made possible by the generosity of Lions throughout the world, and through our fundraising arm, Lions Clubs International Foundation.” Lions Club International is the largest service club organization in the world. LCIF helps Lions improve peoples’ lives around the world, from combating vision problems to responding to major catastrophes to providing valuable life skills to youth.
