By Dave Scott The landmark movie theatre that serves Norfolk has gone digital. Jim Carroll, Business Developer for KWIC Internet and The Strand, said that the change from the old film to digital would provide many opportunities in the movie business. The new system will add higher quality picture and sound making the theatre experience even better!

and were brought down a narrow staircase… not an easy task! In their place now sits the computerized projectors.

The Barco Company installed the new projectors at the Strand. I checked out their site to learn a little more about them and found this fascinating tid-bit of information… these folks do a lot of interesting work!

The Barco company, a global technology company, designs and develops visualization solutions for a variety of selected professional markets: control rooms, defence & aerospace, digital cinema, health care, media & entertainment and simulation & virtual reality.

The new digital format opens up doors for the theatre to show everything in any format and it sounds like Jim and Kent Rapley are already thinking of some fun ideas for viewing.

Kent and Cindy Rapley have been in business 30 years with their business, KWIC Internet and now 5 years with their ownership of The Strand Both are firmly entrenched business and community minded people who have grown their businesses based on strong customer service and commitment… so thank you Kent and Cindy for always helping to grow a vibrant downtown core!

his is the REAL Florida!

In 2013 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is celebrating 100 years of mentoring. That’s a century of changing the lives of young Canadians through friendship. One of the ways the local agency has chosen to celebrate was by hosting a random act of kindness. On Sunday January 27th over a dozen volunteers, parents / guardians and “littles” from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie volunteered a few hours of their time to visit local grocery stores and offer to help customers bag their purchases.

“It was really great to see our “littles” get excited about helping others. Our boys and girls want to give back to the community, and they are proud to represent Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie. It was also great to see the reactions of shoppers when they found out who we were and why we were there… “just because

Our favourite is Highlands Hammock State Park, one of the oldest parks in the state. Situated four miles west of Sebring in South Central Florida a visit to Highlands Hammock is a feast for the eyes and the senses!

For an entrance fee of only $6 per car, you can discover what a real Florida "hammock" actually is -- a shady broad leaf forest with massive oak trees, palm trees, pines and marshes reminiscent of a subtropical jungle and populated with a variety of wildlife including panthers, bobcats, white-tailed deer, river otters, turkey vultures, alligators, armadillos and flocks of egrets.

Of the nine popular hiking trails in this 9,000 acre park, the prettiest one is Cypress Swamp which borders a blackwater stream and affords all kinds of viewing points for alligators and turtles who bask in the afternoon sunshine on grassy banks and fallen logs. No need to feel anxious though -- a raised boardwalk meanders through the entire swamp and keeps visitors high, dry and camera ready! (Also, I've been told, alligators can't jump!)

From Tuesday through Sunday, you can take a one-hour tram ride back into the pinelands and along the South Canal. These are natural nesting areas prohibited to all except tram riders, and this is where your chances of seeing wildlife in its natural habitat increase tremendously.

"Ranger Rick" and his crew are especially adept at spotting and pointing out all of the creatures who populate this exclusive enclave.

However, we first need to help our youth develop into caring and confident adults. By making a difference in the lives of today’s young people, we are strengthening the communities of tomorrow.

Mentored youth, as compared to non-mentored youth, develop an increase in community connectedness. Our volunteers serve as role models, teaching by example the importance

of giving back to one’s community, and having respect for family and peers. Each time a child is matched with a mentor, we Start Something life changing – a relationship built on friendship and trust, empowering our youth to grow into confident, caring adults who give back to their communities.

The need for volunteer mentors is great. In Brant, Brantford, Haldimand and Norfolk alone, there are more than 60 children and youth waiting to be matched with a volunteer mentor.

Historically, this park has a rich, colourful past.

Back in the dirty 30's, when the Great Depression had a stranglehold on the economy, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corp, an army of unemployed men who planted acres of plants and trees, and built roads, dams and bridges across America.

One of the CCC camps was located in Highlands Hammock, and is credited with making the park the gem it is today. In fact, inside the park you

can walk through the CCC museum and view life as these men lived it in the camps back then.

You can even sit down in a rocking chair, beside a fireplace, lean over and push a button on the old floor model radio, and hear one of President Roosevelt's famous "fireside chats".

The Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition was established in 1994 to recognize the outstanding contributions of Norfolk County athletes and builders of sport.

Nominations for Induction into the Sports Hall are accepted each year from members of the community.

Each application package is scored and must achieve at least 80 points to be considered for Induction. A maximum of four Inductees are selected each year.

Inductees from 2011 and 2012 will be celebrated at a Gala Dinner on Saturday July 6, 2013 in Port Dover at the Community Centre.

We are pleased to announce that Mike Bollert, Annaleise Carr, Geordie Kinnear and Paul Meiklejohn have been chosen as the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition Inductees for 2012.

Mike Bollert of Simcoe, has a long history of supporting hockey in Norfolk County. For over 45 years, Mike has given back to the community as a volunteer, serving

in many positions from coach to General Manager. After finishing his playing days with the Guelph Gryphons of Guelph University, he served with the Simcoe Junior Hockey organization for 22 years; Waterford Junior Hockey for 2 years; Hagersville Hawks for 3 years and Port Dover Sailors/ Rebels for 13 years. Mike has also been part of the South Coast Special Needs Association and Girls Hockey. He is also recognized as a long standing volunteer with the Norfolk County Fair. Mike is very instrumental in recruiting local sport teams to help man gates and parking lots with funds raised donated back to support local sport groups. Mike Bollert is being recognized by the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition as a Community Builder of Sport.

Annaleise Carr from Walsh is continuing to bring recognition and honour to Norfolk County for the successful swim across Lake Ontario, in August 2012.

a “never quit” attitude has raised more than $240.000 for camp trillium. She has also set a record of being the youngest person to complete the traditional Marilyn Bell route (52.5 km) across the lake, from Niagara on the Lake to Toronto. Most recently, Annaleise was awarded the World Open Water Swimming Association’s Women of the Year Award. Other recognitions include: Queen’s Jubilee Medal, Canadian Sport Spirit Award, Lieutenant Governor Community Volunteer Pin and Junior Lifeguard Club Provincial Champion.

Annaleise Carr becomes the youngest member to be inducted into the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition and the only swimmer to date.

Geordie Kinnear is a native of Delhi who currently resides in Matthews North Carolina doing what he loves, coaching hockey. Geordie played many sports in school, winning both NSSAA football and OFSSA basketball championships as a member of the Delhi Raiders.

But his greatest sporting passion was for the sport of hockey, where his dedication and skill shaped

his future both as a participant and coach at the professional level. Geordie was a member of the 1988/89 Delhi Midget Ontario Champions, has captained an OHL championship team as a member of the Peterborough Petes; was a member of the Albany River Rats 1995 Calder Cup team, and was selected to 4 AHL All-Star Classics.

He started his NHL career when he was signed by the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999. A career ending spinal injury forced his retirement from on ice player in 2000. This devastating injury did not stop Geordie from pursuing his passion of working in hockey.

He currently holds the position of Assistant Coach with the Charlotte Checkers an affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Each summer, Geordie returns home to Norfolk County to run the Tri County Pros Hockey School with good friend and former NHL player Ryan VandenBussche.

Will This Be a summer WiThouT impaTiens?

Some gardeners became very frustrated with their impatiens dying out in their landscapes last summer.

The culprit was determined to be downy mildew, a fungus known as Plasmopara obducens, which originated in Florida and has spread through eastern North America like wildfire. This disease is unique to Impatiens walleriana (our garden impatiens) but will not infect other plants especially, the New Guinea impatiens (the so-called sun impatiens) which is highly tolerant of this disease.

The signs of Downy mildew on Impatiens walleriana typically start with a few leaves that become completely yellow over time. A white, downylike growth may be present on the underside of the yellow leaves, but can also be found on the underside of green leaves. As the disease progresses, premature leaf drop results in bare, leafless stems.

Eventually these stems can become soft and the plant collapses, similar to frost damage in their flower beds.

Cool temperatures, especially at night, are ideal for this disease to develop rapidly especially when it is coupled with moist air, rainy weather or irrigation that dampens the leaves.

As there are no chemicals available to control this disease, we may be able to slow the spread of disease by closely inspecting our beds of Impatiens walleriana, and promptly removing any infected plants. If the flower beds had this disease last season, try planting alternative shade tolerant flowers such as begonias, lobelia or foliage plants like potato vine, coleus or hostas, for the next two seasons.

Impatiens planted in clean pots and planters with sterile soil may be a way to circumvent this problem this year.

Hopefully, the plant breeders will develop some new resistant varieties in the near future, so our shaded gardens will be full of colour once again.

oncussions are a hot topic these days. This is due mostly to a number of star athletes admitting to suffering debilitating effects as a result of multiple concussions and mismanagement of these injuries. So, if your children are involved in contact sports, should you be worried? Not if you know how to recognize the symptoms of concussion and you make sure that your child heals before returning to sports.

Experts tell us that a concussion can be caused by a bump or blow to the head and can occur during practices or games in any sport. It is not necessary to lose consciousness in order to suffer a concussion. The symptoms of a concussion can vary from mild or quite severe. Generally, a person who has suffered a concussion reports some or all of the following: headaches or pressures in the head; nausea or vomiting; balance problems or dizziness; and double or blurry vision. Children complain of being bothered by light and/or noise; feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy; having difficulty concentrating or paying attention; being confused and generally “not feeling well”. These symptoms should not be ignored, even when they are perceived as mild.

Experts also tell us that most of the time these symptoms will resolve by themselves, without any specific treatment, if the injured person takes time out from contact sports and allows their body to rest and recover. Concussions become a real issue when the injured person returns to the game without allowing the brain to heal. In the past, our children were told to tough it out and suck it up – and they were sent back on the field. And the effect of what should have been a simple concussion got progressively worse with every new concussion, the effect of one compounding the seriousness of the next one.

To address the issue of sports injuries in schools, Ontario has passed Bill 39, The Education Amendment Act (Concussions). The proposed amendment requires school boards to address the issue of concussions with new policies and guidelines and with the education of staff and students. The legislation is meant to protect students and ensure that those who suffer concussions do not return to sports or the class room too soon.

So, if you have been roughed up on the field and experience some of the symptoms listed above, what should you do? Firstly, tell your coach and tell your parents. They can’t take steps to protect you if they don’t know what happened. Secondly, see your family doctor and follow his or her advice. Thirdly, take time to recover. Your brain needs time to heal. Studies have shown that while the brain is healing, it is much more prone to further injury. So don’t take any chances. It is pretty rough going through life with an injured brain.

By George Pond Most of us are familiar with the Great Blue Heron. They are relatively common around the marshes and ponds of Norfolk during the Spring, Summer and Fall. Blue Herons nest in colonies, called Rookeries. Some Rookeries contain hundreds of nests, located high in the forest trees. The forest is usually very wet and often the trees are surrounded by water.

One winter day Vic Gibbons was surprised to find one of these magnificent birds on the pier at Port Dover, as they usually migrate south during the colder

months. This one however, like a few others do each year, had decided to over-winter and trust that Mother Nature would provide enough open water for it to hunt.

I love the way that Vic has moved his bird from the pier to the side of a mist shrouded pond, edged with clumps of brown cattails and framed with the fallen branch of a White Birch.

I find Great Blues difficult to approach here in Norfolk but in Florida where they are abundant I have been able to take many good photographs.

The dumping of lake-effect snow that we had on the weekend kept me busy filling the bird feeders as the birds came in large flocks to refuel.

What surprised me the most was the number of Northern Cardinals that have been visiting. In the past, it was normal to have two or three at the feeders at one time. This weekend, however, I counted eight!

The beauty of these bright red birds sitting on a snow-covered bush is just something I can never get tired of seeing.

Cardinals were originally a southern bird, but, thanks in part to the increase in backyard bird feeding, they began to expand their range northward about a hundred years ago. At first they migrated back south during the winter, but have adapted their skills in foraging for food during the winter months and now stay throughout the year. However, they have not yet expanded westward much past the middle of the continent. They were, however, introduced to Hawaii in 1929 and are, unfortunately, thriving there to the detriment of many native species.

Cardinals aren’t the only red birds to be seen at the feeders this winter.

In addition to the House Finch, which looks like a sparrow that has been dipped in raspberry juice, this year we have a fairly large population of Common Redpolls making frequent visits. The Redpoll is a small finch that usually lives in the arctic tundra and boreal forest.

However, in years when their normal food supply, which consists mainly of birch and alder catkins, is in short supply further north, they migrate south and enjoy the

bounty found at backyard feeders, particularly if thistle or niger seed is available.

Common Redpolls are small birds with small, pointed, seed-eating bills. Mainly brown and white with heavily streaked sides, they have a dark red patch on their foreheads, black feathering around their yellow bills and two white wingbars.

Males have a pale red vest on the chest and upper flanks. These birds often travel in large flocks of several hundred individuals.

Redpolls breed around the world in the lands that ring the Arctic Ocean. As an Arctic species, Redpolls have adapted to the harsh winter weather by increasing the weight of their plumage by about 31 per cent in the fall, thus being able to survive temperatures as low as -65 Fahrenheit/-54 Celsius. To keep warm through the night, Redpolls tunnel into the snow and spend the night there protected from the wind.

Redpolls have a stretchy pouch in their oesophagus where they can temporarily store about 2 grams of seeds, about a quarter of their daily energy requirement. This allows them to fill the pouch with seeds quickly and then fly away to a safer and warmer spot to eat them.

To survive the winter, Redpolls eat up to 42 per cent of their body mass every day.

Bird banding records have shown that Redpolls are world travellers: a bird banded in Michigan was later recovered in Siberia and a Redpoll banded in Belgium was found two years later in China.

Landowner Leaders Program

The Carolinian Canada Coalition is presenting a series of workshops to assist landowners in southern Ontario to create, protect and conserve habitat for the province’s species at risk in the Carolinian

Life Zone, one of the most fragile and ecologically diverse landscapes in Canada.

Carolinian Canada is the southernmost region of Canada and contains more rare and endangered species of plants and animals than any other part of Canada. Over 125 species have been identified at risk and over 400 others are considered rare. Forest cover has been reduced from 80 to 11 per cent and wetlands once have been reduced from 28 per cent of the land to 5 per cent.

“Private landowners who practice sound land stewardship on their own land support biodiversity and are protecting air, water and soil quality for everyone,” stated Michelle Kanter, Executive Director of the Carolinian Canada Coalition. “The Landowner Leaders Program will provide the tools to help private individuals in proactively leading the way in helping provide habitat for species at risk and other wildlife.”

A series of landowner workshops, entitled Caring for Carolinian Habitat on Your Land, will be offered across southwestern Ontario in February and March 2013 to help interested landowners familiarize themselves with the different species at risk found in their county, learn ways in which to develop and steward habitat for these species, and how to develop habitat action plans. One of the workshops will be specially geared towards woodlot owners, and one will be designed for farmers. Local conservation authorities, stewardship councils,

and other conservation groups will be on hand to describe the types of technical assistance they can provide, and what financial and tax incentives are available to the private landowner.

The workshops will be offered on the following dates and locations: Saturday, February 23 – Senior’s Recreation Centre, St. Thomas Saturday, March 2 – Port Franks Community Centre, Pt. On a recent trip to the New Orleans area, I discovered that although I do know a lot about fabric, I am not perfect. I thought I would just tell you about my experience , whilst reinforcing that age-old adage that if it seems to good to be true... then it is. Buyer beware.

I came across a fabric store while in New Orleans that I thought I would just browse through. This particular store was independently owned by two women, so I felt very akin to them right off the bat. As I made my way around the rolls and rooms of hanging fabric, I recognized certain designer patterns and labels that I knew, and I wondered how this store could offer those particular fabrics at such unbelievable prices.

I learned that the ladies who owned the store bought their fabrics by visiting some designer fabric warehouses and fabric outlets a few times throughout the year. They would choose whatever fabrics they thought would sell in the store, in the yardages and colours they wanted to carry. One obvious drawback of that method is - that if a customer happened to find something they loved, they had to hope there was enough of the fabric on the roll for their project

Mountain Bike races across the nation. Paul started his cycling career at the age of 12 and has been a Provincial winner in BMX (Bicycle Motocross), Cross Country and Downhill Mountain bike racing. Paul won his first provincial championship in BMX racing at the age of 14. Over the years, Paul has transitioned into Downhill Mountain Bike Racing and has competed provincially, nationally and at the International level.

His career highlights include: 16 Ontario cup wins; 2 Canada Cup National wins; 5-time Provincial Champion; and Silver at Canadian

,or they were out of luck as far as re-ordering went.

Now, what the nice ladies did not like to tell you, is that the reason some of the fabrics were such great prices, is that some of the fabrics had flaws. Not all of them – but some of them. Little , sometimes almost undetectable flaws like different colour shading that you could easily miss unless you were looking at the fabric in a certain way, and in a certain light. Sometimes, it might be a hiccup in a print. The mills may have goofed while printing off the fabric on what I like to think of as a “test” run. Which happens.

Whatever happens though, is that the fabric did not live up to the standards that the fabric company expected so they sell the roll(s) to jobbers or other secondary means such as the outlets. Also, some of the fabrics were simply discontinued for any number of reasons.

When I initially said I was not perfect , I was referring to the fact that I bought a lot of fabric that day- and -I did not have the time to inspect every yard. No one else will see the flaws I found in one of the fabrics I bought - unless I point them out- but I know they are there.

Luckily I know how to either work around the flaws plus I always buy

He continues to give back to Norfolk County as a guest speaker at schools and award banquets.

Paul was a founding member of the Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club, which was formed in 2011. He was responsible for building many of the trails that are now used extensively by the club. Paul becomes the first Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition inductee recognized for the sport of Downhill Mountain Bike racing.

more yardage than I need. It was a live and learn experience.

I, on the other hand, carry sample books of designer fabric rather than rolls of fabric. Larger sample pieces can always be ordered should a person want to view a larger piece.

Fabric content is always supplied.

Rub/friction counts are given where applicable, letting you know the durability of the fabric which is very important when it comes to upholstering furniture. Most importantly though, is the fact that, should a fabric not be perfect it can always be replaced.
