Fitness and F un on Norfolk's Trails

By Jean Mottashed A lively group of about forty walkers assembled at Backus Woods last month and blazed the trails to celebrate Trail Day in Norfolk -- and what a fine day it was! The sun was shining, temperatures were refreshing, there was a sniff of crispness in the air, and the leaves were just beginning to show the majestic colours of the season. A joint initiative of Pathways for People, the Haldmiand-Norfolk Health Unit, and Norfolk County, Trail Day encourages all residents of Norfolk to take to our many woodland paths and simply enjoy the sheer pleasure of walking in the great outdoors. Not only did participants appreciate the healthy benefits of walking, but there was much conversation and laughter along the way as everyone met up with someone they knew, and made the acquaintance of others they did not. And then there was the sheer beauty of the woods -- stunning in their depth and variety of growth, trees soaring skyward and undergrowth blanketing the ground in a tangle of vines, leaves and roots. This tract of Carolinian forest, a rare and precious ecosystem, boasts a wide variety of flora unfound in other areas of Ontario. Thanks to Nature Conservancy Canada and the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, the trails were wide and well groomed, so walkers could easily walk in pairs or three abreast on mostly level, dry paths. Trail markers defined the way, and newly installed gates and fencing ensured the traffic was restricted to pedestrians and cyclists. By happy coincidence, my grade 5 teacher, Gord Pennington and his wife Ruth, were along for the walk and I picked up some fascinating information from Gord about these woods. Back in the mid-1800's trees here were marked with the King's stamp, cut down and used for the masts of British ships. Indeed, you could hardly walk a dozen meters without craning your neck to try to see the tops of these fifty foot giants of the forest. Many thanks to Keith and Joyce Flexman of Pathways for People, for leading the way through the trails and into a glorious afternoon filled with fresh air, fitness and fun!

Left to right, Ruth Pennington, Gord Pennington and Ruth Pepper enjoyed Trail Day in Norfolk.
