With 18 number one hits, Elvis was able to crossover to all different forms of music from gospel, country & western, R&B and easy listening.
ELVIS This month Randy shares his intensive knowledge on the origins of rock and roll, and he talks about the King of Rock and Roll… the one and only Elvis!

Randy describes rock and roll as coming from a melting pot of blues, country, R&B, soul, and gospel that all develop into this new sound. Then, of course, came Rock and Roll Radio which is believed to have started with Alan Freed in Cleveland Ohio with the show called Moondog Rock and Roll Party (1951)!

April sure was a busy month for both Hub videos and audio podcasts. VIDEOS Watch for videos from Causyn Cooling & Heating where we have the opportunity to meet the new owner, Craig Mellors, who takes the time to remind us to service our air conditioners before the warm weather hits. Next up we spend some time with Blaire Sylvester, Norfolk County's Public Transportation and Business Development Coordinator. Blaire shares with us the new Ride Norfolk busing schedule and chats about the new signs and bus shelters that are coming! Our good friends at the Cider Keg are preparing for another season, and we pop by to get an update from Cheryl Peck on all things Cider Keg related. Of course, our monthly Simcoe Canadian Tire store update has us visiting Don Kearney-Bourque in the Garden Centre where the staff is preparing for a busy season! Last but not least is our monthly health chat with Barb Anstead at Dover Apothecary. This month, Barb helps us to understand how we can deal with those pesky allergies! AUDIO PODCASTS On the audio side of things, we have been busy in the studio recording with everyone's favourite DJ, Randy Halmo from Klassy FM. Randy stops by, and we chat about the King of Rock and Roll, ELVIS! Legendary ultrarunner from Norfolk, Charlie Upshall, talks about his incredible running accomplishments over the years and what his next goal is‌ a true inspiration! It is always great to sit and chat with Dave Horton! Dave, the cornerstone for the MS Society in our area, and I talk about the upcoming MS Walk. Dave provides excellent insight from a personal level about living with someone who has MS. Iris Smith takes the time to tell us about her upcoming fundraising adventure for Norfolk General Hospital in which she will climb all the stairs at the CN Tower. WINE & CHEESE
We asked Dover Cheese owner, Jenny Ball, and Burning Kiln Winemaker, Lydia Tomek, to educate us on proper wine and cheese matchings. Lydia Tomek explained that M-1 is made from 100% Kiln Dried, estate grown Merlot, fermented and aged in French Oak for 18 months. As a full-bodied, highly concentrated appassimento red, this Merlot is layered with bold, elegant tannins and complimented with notes of dark cherry and leather. Jenny Ball shared that a beautiful cheese complement to M-1 is an English style Red Leicester cheddar cheese aged in wax. It is rich, creamy and slightly sweet with an almost caramel flavour that builds up a more robust taste as it ages.

IN THE
LONG
RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL
A JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN “It’s not the distance you must conquer in running, it’s yourself.” - Michael D’Aulerio Every accomplishment begins with the decision to try. I am trying to plan for the longest race I have ever undertaken – the one time only, 10 day event at 3 Days at the Fair in New Jersey. Each participant completes as many one mile loops as possible during 240 consecutive hours, stopping to attend to maintenance issues, food and sleep whenever he or she chooses. Ten days is the longest time officially recognized for records by the Association of Canadian Ultrarunners. No Canadian over the age of 70 has ever completed a 10 day race so, of course, I thought why not me. Weather-wise, it has been a tough few months for training, but my friend Steve and I did have a very productive three week block in Florida in March. I came home pumped for the final push, envisioning a one week rest and then five high mileage weeks on the Lynn Valley Trail, to be followed by a week of tapering before the competition. The first three weeks did not go well. On the very first day I tripped, falling face first on the trail. This resulted in a banged-up knee with significant swelling, pain and on-going stiffness. The second week, I got out for 18 km on Monday but somehow by night-time my neck was so sore and stiff that I could not sleep, suffering through a series of muscle spasms that made it almost impossible to move or get into or out of bed. Waiting for it to improve on its own did not work; after three days I went to see Tom Sartor at North Shore Health Associates. With the help of Tom and his staff, the neck issue has almost been resolved. The last two weeks have been much better and I expect to go to New Jersey in a reasonably positive frame of mind with a number of back to back three hour run/walks in recent days. Based on my previous performances in multi-day
races and on the condition of my knees, I feel the best strategy is as follows: on waking each morning have a quick snack and then run 10 miles; afterwards have breakfast and attend to my feet; for the rest of the day mostly walk with major breaks for lunch, an afternoon nap and dinner; in the evening change clothes and endeavour to continue well past midnight. Late at night I enjoy the peacefulness as there are only a few like-minded individuals who stay out that long. If I am on the course for a total of 17 hours in a day, I should be able to get in about 90 km, taking into account washroom breaks, clothing and shoe changes, snacks, foot care and other matters that will surely arise. However, now that I have been studying the health benefits of sleep, I have a new factor to consider. Does my plan allow me enough time for the substantial sleep that I now believe my body needs? Last year at the 6 day event, I basically slept for 4 hours or less per night and stayed up all night on Day 6. I no longer feel that is adequate. Science is telling me that sleep deprivation generally kicks in after 16 to 18 hours of being awake and gets worse with each additional hour. Your mind, heart, endocrine system and immune system are all affected. My general plan has me on the move for 17 hours plus further time spent on maintenance and full meals. The brain does not handle sleep deprivation well. Reaction times decline, virtually tripling after a night without sleep. Memory starts to deteriorate. I am aware that in prior events my memory of certain episodes and what day they occurred is very sketchy. In The Long Run Proudly Sponsored By

I also know that in the late stages of last year’s 6 day race, I was checking the monitor every mile to see how far I had gone as I could not remember even for such a short time. After 18 hours, decision-making, math processing abilities and even spatial awareness begin to decline. Staying awake for long periods of time is a kind of low-level brain damage.
number of hours you slow down, even if you are making a conscious effort to keep your heart rate down and go easy. Eventually there is no point to staying out on the course. During my first multi-day race, when I knew even less than I do now, I finally gave in and went to rest when I realized that after over 40 hours without a sleep break, I was basically shuffling sideways.
Your heart does not respond well if you are awake for longer than 18 hours either. Normally, blood pressure rises over the course of the day, due to physical and emotional stresses. At night, when you sleep, it drops back down. Research in the United States found that even the one hour of sleep, generally lost on the Monday after the change to spring daylight saving time, resulted in a 25 per cent increase in heart attacks.
This is my dilemma: I now know that I am physically capable of staying up making “relentless forward progress” for longer than is mentally or physically advisable. How can I compensate if I allow myself more time to sleep? I think the answer may have something to do with focus. I need to be more efficient during my down time. To do that, I need to concentrate, keeping myself in the moment when eating, cleaning up, changing clothes and shoes and getting ready to sleep. I need to set small goals for each running and walking section. Most importantly, I have to try to find that balance between focus and relaxation, wherein I do not lose the critical factor of enjoyment that has propelled me to my most successful results.
Sleep is vital for hormone production. When you’re up for more than 18 hours, your testosterone level will slowly deplete, affecting your energy levels. The good news is that normal levels can be restored by getting some good sleep. Also, after 18 hours of sleeplessness, your body begins to build up pro-inflammatory proteins like IL-6, a blood marker linked with chronic health conditions. Your number of immune cells begins to decline and the body is not able to make more without rest. As a rule, performance declines as well. After a long

TIPS FOR SPRING
FISHING
It has been a very different winter this past season. It was freezing followed by thawing and then repeating this action time and again. Along with these temperature changes was a whole lot of wind. We would go several days without sunshine. Some weeks we caught a glimpse of the sun only. But the spring of 2019 is now upon so let’s think positive and get outdoors and enjoy the fishing opportunities this time of the year can bring. Treat water with respect. The water at this time of the year is, for the most part, very chilly. If you were to fall in, hypothermia would be quite short in coming. Please exercise caution while around the water, whether it be in a boat or walking the shoreline. Stay back from the edge when walking to avoid an accidental slip into the frigid water. Temperature is not the only thing to bear in mind at this time of the year. Flowing water is moving very fast at the time of this writing. You can be swept downstream quickly. If you are wading, the water can be very murky as well and seeing depth and spotting submerged obstacles can be difficult. Dress appropriately. Today’s outdoor clothing offers so many good choices – and do not cost a lot of money. Mornings and evenings can be quite chilly with warm mid-day periods. Dress in layers so you can subtract and add clothing as the day warms and cools. Rain gear is a must at this time of the year. If any significant chance of rainfall is forecast, pack your rain gear. So much of it is breathable these days that it is not uncomfortable to wear as perspiring is non-existent or minimal at the worse scenario. Fish slowly. With cool nights and cool water the fish are not active to be chasing down fast moving offerings. Slow your presentation down to trigger that strike you’re hoping to get. Live bait offerings can make the difference. As most fish species are starting to feed more often and for longer periods of time, real bait is generally more effective than imitation offerings. The action and smell of the “real thing” can be the difference between a bite and no bites. Check out shallow, back bays. Shallow water warms faster from the sunshine than deeper water. The warmer water attracts insects, which attract baitfish, which attract game fish. These back bays are where to turn your attention to first. Check water temperature. All species of fish have preferred temperature ranges. Research your quarry and know what their temperature preferences are. Then search out the body of water you are fishing and find that temperature. Find the food, find the fish. After ice out, fish will begin to eat more frequently. To increase your odds, look for their food source. Spending the extra hours can pay huge dividends to your outing. Locate the food typically serving Lake erie Boaters means you will locate the sought after species. Think small. At this time of the year, the fish do not need a large meal. They are coming off of a long almost dormant period. They are looking for something small and easy to capture. As the water warms, then begin to increase the size of your bait. This is such a wonderful time of the year to be on the water. Animals and birds are coming alive and mating, trees and plants are starting to green and bud and the sunshine is warmer each and every day. Please exercise caution and enjoy your time outdoors. 'ALGONQUIN' by: Vic Gibbons
The man of great works.
With the warm weather beginning to take hold, our thoughts turn to the outdoors, may it be working in the garden, getting out on the water, or heading up north to experience nature, we all have something we enjoy! For Vic and his wife, their yearly trip to Algonquin with friends was an inspiration for several of Vic's paintings. This dandy here was from a photo not far from the lodge Vic stayed at. Vic's smile said it all as he explained the tasty home cooked meals and the laid-back lifestyle the yearly retreat brought. It is easy to see from this painting entitled Algonquin, why Vic loved travelling up to the park to take in its sheer beauty! Now that you have seen the painting, Vic hopes you are inspired to get out and spend time in the great outdoors and appreciate all it has to offer.

are best, what is a therapeutic level, who should take them and how much?
START SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE – JUST START! Is there anything in your life that you are so passionate about and so familiar with that it is simply second nature to you? As a Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioner, I must admit that I am guilty of information overload with my clients occasionally… I get super excited to share so much, sometimes forgetting that most of the information is brand new to others. When we don’t even know what it is that we don’t know, it is difficult to identify goals, never mind set and achieve them. Putting goals into action, is the process - it builds habits that become a lifestyle! I am passionate about assisting my clients in recognizing and setting their own goals. It is so important for people to understand that change can begin one step at a time, this is a sustainable approach for most, one foot at a time equals one change at a time. It’s the same strategy for climbing any mountain, just get moving. Having a trusted and knowledgeable guide to support and encourage you every step of the way helps you find and stay on the path to reach your summit. What is your vision when you reach the top? An initial consult can involve many different things: Is your concern perhaps resolution or better management of specific health conditions? Many individuals are aware of genetic predispositions and would like to be educated and empowered to reduce dis-ease risk. Much of my practice revolves around digestive health. Like Hippocrates, I recognize that it is connected to virtually every dis-ease process in the body affecting physical and immune function as well as our mental and emotional well being. Supplements can be a challenge and overwhelming for many due to the sheer volume of availability - which ones
Nutritional status is affected by a myriad of causes: diet over and under nutrition, diseases – both chronic and acute, depletion from lifestyle factors, medications and destructive health habits, poor coping mechanisms for STRESS, just to name a few.
BASIC BEGINNINGS: Individual consults are available as are group programs. Classes and workshops are a very fun and effective way to navigate the change you wish to become! If you feel you could benefit from learning more about portion sizes, nutrition labels, meal prep, nutrient dense foods, digestive health and harmony, get delicious and easy recipes, chop veggies and prep a weekly veggie bin to stay on track, while having fun and learning from one another, AND have fun with fitness in the kitchen *PTS Wanda Rowe will be on board with me for specific programs – to register, contact me for program dates and times. Cost is $65 + HST for each 2 hour class OR purchase a package of 4 classes for $250 = HST (join with a friend at $225 = HST each). TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT: WHAT TO EXPECT The knee joint is the most commonly replaced joint in the human body due to it being the largest as well as the joint that sustains the greatest stress whether mobile or stationary. Recent reports have found that in the past 5 years the need for knee replacements has increased by 15.5%, with over 9,400 surgeries being performed each year and rising. Recovering from a joint replacement is different for everyone but with the correct interventions can be less troublesome than expected. The most common misconception about knee replacements is that you will be bed ridden for days when in reality patients are up and moving between 12-24 hours after surgery and beginning physical therapy within the week. Crutches should be used initially for the first couple of weeks post operation, with the general recovery time to return to most activities of daily living being between 4-6 weeks. Recovery is seldom a linear process with pain being a factor that can increase and decrease from day to day as well as swelling frequently coming and going up to 6 months to a year after surgery. Pre joint and overall fitness contributes to how lengthy the recovery process will be, with strong, healthy muscles and ligaments recovering faster. Establishing a fitness program that works to strengthen the musculature around the knee joint months leading up to surgery is recommended and can be beneficial to decrease recovery time. With knee replacements being on the rise, the need for proper pre and post care and conditioning is essential to efficient recovery and regaining the quality of life experienced before the surgery. Great Lakes Physiotherapy offers a wellness program that can prepare you beforehand with specific exercises related to the joint being replaced to ensure understanding and effective strengthening practices as well as post surgical treatment after the replacement has been done. The most important thing to remember after any replacement is to keep it moving within the joints means and call Great Lakes Physiotherapy for any recovery assistance!

LET’S GET LOUD FOR MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2019, MAY 6-11 HOW IS MENTAL HEALTH LIKE PHYSICAL HEALTH? We are all human beings, and each of us has a physical body. We also all have a mind, and we all have emotions. In the same way that we all have a state of physical health, we all have a state of mental health. Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. Here’s something to think about: You might have an illness or a disease, say diabetes. Maybe you deal with the symptoms– through diet, physical activity, medication or in other ways. When it comes to your physical health, you might feel absolutely great. On the other hand, you might not have any illness or disease, but for any number of reasons, you might not feel physically well at all. Say you don’t sleep well, or you are rundown. All this to say that you might have an illness or disease on one hand, but feel well on the whole. On the other hand, you may not have a disease but are not feeling “well” at all.
The great part about the beautiful weather is getting outdoors and exercising. As athletes who run, swim and bike, our main concern is getting in the best shape possible. However, don't totally forget about hair care. Think about the constant sweat head, chlorine from the pools causing straw-like hair, and throw in a hefty dose of sun. Tell us, Laura, what can we do to keep our hair healthy and strong? Summer months can really dry out your hair. Make sure you are using products with extra moisture to keep your hair hydrated. You may also need products for frizz protection to deal with the humidity or UV protection to keep your colour looking its best. Also, try not to wash your hair every day. It might sound bizarre not to wash your hair if you've been working out but washing your hair daily actually strips its natural moisture and can be very damaging for your hair. Instead, try a dry shampoo or if you have always washed your hair daily, start by trying to skip just one day a week. Wet your hair and only use conditioner. If you are spending lots of time in the pool remember to rinse the chlorine out of your hair as soon as you get out. Also make sure you are using a good leave-in conditioner, like Pureology Colour Fanatic spray. You might also need to use a good clarifying shampoo once a week to get the chlorine out. Next month... The same is true about your mental health. You might have a mental illness, but that doesn’t mean you’re mentally unhealthy. Or that you can’t feel well. And even if you don’t have a mental illness, you may at times feel mentally unwell. Stress, an overwhelming schedule, and difficult life events or circumstances can put pressure on your mental health. We can all have a state of mental well being, whether or not we have a mental illness. Every single one of us. But what is mental health exactly. Well for one, we all have it. It’s not something that just affects the 1 in 5 Canadians who have mental illness. We all have mental health, just like we have physical health. Everyone of us. 5 in 5 Mental Health Week is approaching, and we’re getting ready to #GETLOUD about what mental health really means. Join us in kicking off Mental Health Week on Monday, May 6 with a Community Information Fair, from 11:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the CMHA Simcoe site, 395 Queensway West, Simcoe. I stopped by Simcoe Natural Foods to chat with the owner Laura, and we began talking about the harsh changes Health Canada is proposing to natural health product regulations. As she explained, it became clear that this issue needs to be addressed. It boils down to this, Health Canada wants to lump natural health products into the same category as over the counter synthetic chemical drugs. Right now, Simcoe Natural Foods has a petition going for folks to sign to prevent this from happening. Stop by and get the facts from Laura.

Now it is time to let Advantage Athletic Therapy help you get back out doing the gardening you enjoy. Don’t leave those recurring, nagging injuries. Get to the root of the problem.
SUNNY DAY With the spring weather, comes the yard work that needs to be done. Everyone is excited to get out there and enjoy the sun. Of course, we start easy, picking up the fallen branches, grabbing the rake to clean up those few remaining leaves that have survived the winter… and we may as well trim back a few branches while we are at it. It is so lovely that we decide to cut the lawn and turn over the soil in the garden. At the end of the day, our yard looks great, but we have probably overdone it with all that pushing, pulling, turning and twisting. It takes its toll! The next day you suddenly discover that your back problem has flared up, along with the sore knee and tight hip! It happens…
The staff at Advantage Athletic Therapy can provide insight and help to correct the pains that are slowing you down. They are the experts in both athletic therapy and massage therapy. Call Advantage Athletic Therapy today!
