‘Top Tips Tour’ at Thetford Library As part of the Great Swapathon, the Thetford Healthy Town team and Alex Lynch, NHS Norfolk’s Change4Life Coordinator, took part in a ‘Top Tips Tour’ event for children at the Thetford Library. This was a fun and interactive session where children found out more about ‘The Fats of Life’ and were able to take part in the ‘Secret Sugar Show’ as well as taking on the ‘Top Tips Bush Tucker Trial’ (fortunately no bugs in sight!). There were tasters and a ‘top tips trivia quiz’ for both children and adults. The team interacted with the many children, helping them colour and hunt for the many clues around the Library for the quiz. It was great to see so many young children (and parents) enjoy learning in a practical way. One such quiz was to measure out how many teaspoons of sugar were in a can of cola. Can you believe it is seven? Alex was pleased that so many turned out for this event. She said “The children were the bravest in trying some of our different foods. Our ‘slimy tree bark’ was very popular which consisted of rice cakes and light cream cheese”. For more information and to sign up as a change4life supporter visit www.nhs.uk/Change4Life.

META services to continue in 2011/2012 Throughout the last year META, the drop-in information and support service for migrant workers in the Thetford area, has been part-funded by the Thetford Healthy Town project. META’s role has been to help clients register with local GPs, and make them aware of local health projects and services. META has secured funding from Breckland Council and other sources to continue running its drop-in service for migrant workers two days a week (Mondays and Tuesdays) from April 2011. The service will still be provided in Portuguese, Polish, Lithuanian, Russian and English.

clients’ home countries. META staff will keep their knowledge up to date regarding local health services to signpost clients to, and will continue to provide health literature, web access and free condoms in the waiting room at The Limes, 32 Bridge Street. And not forgetting that META’s own Stop Smoking Service will continue to be provided in the languages listed above. For more information about any of META’s services, please call The Limes on 01842 754639.

As part of its general service, META staff will continue to help clients register with local GPs and to understand other health related issues, including how different parts of the NHS works, as this often differs from health services in

Pay a Visit to the Lynford Stag this April First Nordic Walking course a success! The first Nordic Walking course in Thetford came to an end last week with the successful completion of the course by six ladies, each achieving a ‘pass’. With their achievement now under their belts, their aim is to carry on their Nordic Walking together as a team and to go out regularly as a group. Further information on the Nordic Walking, tel: Active Norfolk 01603 731564

Join us for a leisurely walk on Sunday 17th April 2011, starting from Mundford Village Hall Car Park. Meet at 9.45am to join the 9½ mile forest walk. As well as giving you the chance to admire Lynford Stag, the walk takes you past the beautiful Lynford Hall. The hall was built in 1858 and, in recent history, has served as a military training hospital and forester training school. As you stroll along forest paths you will also pass Lynford Lake; popular with fishermen. Don’t forget to be on the look out for wildlife which will be emerging with the arrival of spring, in particular the woodland and grasslands are a haven for butterflies. You do not have to be a member of Walking for Health to attend, all are very welcome to join, just turn up and join in the walk for free! There will be a stop half way round for a light snack provided by yourself, so remember what you want to eat, you have to carry!

Did you know Before vegetables go out of date, they can be frozen. Blanche them for one minute in boiling water, then pack them in airtight freezer bags to last for up to six months.

April is Bowel Cancer awareness month. In England, bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer. This April, to mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), national charity Bowel Cancer UK is encouraging men and women across the UK to be aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and to act on their concerns, sooner rather than later. Symptoms of bowel cancer include:• blood in your stools (faeces) • an unexplained change in your bowel habits, such as prolonged diarrhoea or constipation • unexplained weight loss. Screening plays an important part in the fight against bowel cancer because the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chance that it can be cured completely. Food for Thought! With the Joy of Food project delivering cookery sessions for well over a year now, Sean West who coordinates the activities and delivers many of the sessions is now a familiar face within schools and community groups. It was lovely to see so many faces in the Small Court of the Guildhall a few weeks back where you used this opportunity to peruse a collection of delicious recipes whilst asking the Thetford Healthy Town team, a Health Trainer and Walking for Health Coordinator, Malcolm Bellingham any burning questions you had. For more information about any of the projects Tel: 01842 757350 or email enquiries@thetfordhealthytown.co.uk
