ROUTER BITS: COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS Solution
VIBRATION PROBLEM
• Dirty collets • Worn collets • Improper collet diameter • Unbalanced tool or tool holder • Worn (eccentric) spindle
• Clean collets • Recommended collet life = 800 to 1000 hrs. Replace collets • Use exact diameter • Consult tooling/holder supplier • Consult machinery dealer
BURNING OR MELTING MATERIAL PROBLEM
• Improper chip load • Improper tool selection for material or application • Inadequate chip removal
• Chip load= Feed rate/(RPM x number of cutting edges) • Consult tooling representative • Improve dust collection
PART MOVEMENT PROBLEM • Improper vacuum • Improper tool selection • Improper chip load • Parts too small
• Improve vacuum system • Use down shear for small parts • Chip load = Feed rate/(RPM x number of cutting edges) • Use gasket seals (dedicated to part) Leave thin skin on part and send through thickness sander
POOR TOOL LIFE PROBLEM
• Improper chip load • Vibration • Poor chip removal • Improper tool selection • Eccentric spindle
• Chip load = Feed rate/(RPM x number of cutting edges) • See Vibration Problem • Improve dust collection • Consult tooling representative • Consult machinery dealer
POOR CUT LIFE PROBLEM
• Improper chip load • Tool running out • Part movement • Vibration • Damaged tool • Dull tool
• Chip load = Feed rate/(RPM x number of cutting edges) • Consult tooling representative • See Part Movement Problem • See Vibration Problem • Inspect cutting edge • Service tool
TOOL BREAKAGE PROBLEM
• Vibration • Dirty/worn collets • Improper chip load
• See Vibration Problem • See Vibration Problem • Chip load = Feed rate/(RPM x number of cutting edges)
