WINTER

Welcome It may be cold outside, but in this issue of Life & Style we’ve plenty to keep you warm. As we look to reconnect with loved ones (where we can), spending happy days at home, let’s make our spaces cosy and snug, layering up and creating sharing moments – after all, it’s what our homes are made for. I have always loved this time of year, the stillness, the scent, the contrast of being outdoors in the cold and coming in to the warmth of a roaring fire and the nurturing state that our homes provide. And, of course, we’ve Christmas on the horizon; while we may not be able to follow our usual traditions, perhaps it’s time to start new ones in this year of change, like lighting an Advent candle or buying less but with more heart. I’d like to thank you for the love and support you’ve shown Nordic House during 2020 – it really does mean the world, Sandie x

AT HOME

The warmth of home Slow down and bring those you can near, as we appreciate the support our homes have given us this year. Know that, with our homes on our side, we can feel safe, nurtured and loved. Light a fire, burn a candle, bring out blankets and cushions, enjoy your favourite drink or share a family-speciality dish as we prepare for a winter at home.

Warm up home

Layer linens on your dining table, creating a space that’s warm and cosy. Start with a stripe tablecloth, then add striped runners across the width of your table rather than down – the change of direction of the pattern adds more visual interest. Build up each place setting with a rattan mat, artisan-style crockery and napkins.

“Dress our simple black stripe table linen for Christmas and beyond – it’s so versatile”

Away from the table, look for areas where you can introduce more texture contrasts – try dressing your bed with a runner on top of a cosy throw, choosing stoneware accessories like candle holders or coasters, or wooden pieces of furniture placed next to linen-effect upholstery. All of which will add warmth, however cold things get outside.

Make the most of light

Scandinavians love it: from the soft morning light through to evening shadows. Place your dining table where you can benefit from as much natural light as possible.

STYLE

BLACK ACCENTS Play the Nordic monochrome game, adding black pieces of furniture to an all-white space

2

3

Use a simple palette

Think less is more

Think subtle and muted colours, avoiding anything that's too punchy. If you need an accent, then try black, which adds definition to those Nordic whites, soft greys, pinks, blues and greens.

Give your space room to breathe – the perfect solution if you are working to a budget. You don't need to fill a space with furniture; buy less but more of the pieces you really love.

4

5

Mix rather than match

Add soft layers

Take your time to build up a Nordic-style home, mixing old with new. Try pairing painted and wooden chairs at your dining table or popping a sheepskin pouf next to your fabric sofa.

From place settings to tablelinen, throws and cushions, to lighting with lamps and candles, layering is a key part of pulling off a Nordic look. It adds visual contrast as well as texture.

STYLE

SIMPLE STYLING Turn everyday objects into a stylish display

7

Fall for houseplants

Work the space hard

Plants are a must in a Nordic scheme, creating harmony between inside and out. They are also the perfect accompaniment to those white walls – green evokes a crisp yet relaxing mood.

With many Scandinavians working from their summer cottages, where sometimes guests outnumber available beds, a flexible space is a must. Use screens to divide areas and add built-in storage.

8

9

Add warmth with rugs

Keep things natural

From sheepskins to Berbers, rugs can bring in texture and style… fast. Look for fringing or embellishment for added interest. Try a sheepskin by the side of your bed, ready to sink toes into – bliss!

Include plenty of wood in your Nordic scheme, keeping to softer, paler woods like oak and birch. But it's not just wooden furniture – look for lamp bases and mirrors, which add natural warmth.
