EMBRACE THE FRESHNESS AND HOPE OF THE NEW SEASON The first signs of spring are welcomed with open arms across Nordic countries after the cold, dark winter. It’s the time of year when Scandinavians enjoy a more relaxed, simple way of life that spills effortlessly outside.
“Spring will come and so will happiness. Hold on. Life will get warmer” - ANTIA KRIZZAN, WRITER
here’s a Swedish saying, “Nu är det vår”, which means “spring is here”, and is said optimistically around the end of March. While spring officially spans March through to the end of May, it’s not uncommon for Scandinavians to enjoy one final week of winter skiing over Easter. But towards the later part of April and into May, nature can literally be seen exploding all around. Trees and flowers are waking up, the melting snow in the mountains swells the rivers and lakes, and blossom makes for a pretty picture moment.
plans. Scandinavians tend not to want to waste a moment inside if they could be outside, enjoying the spring sunshine – the layering of clothing is a must, as is being prepared for April showers, which could still include snow or hail. Of course, food is designed to be shared, with a smörgåsbord a must, full of seasonal flavours and favourites. Scandinavians also make the most of those long weekends. Easter is often the time when many head to their summer cottages. Chocolate eggs are given on Easter morning – Pask in Sweden, Påske in Denmark and Norway – and Easter hags (children dressed up) knocking on your door, are a common sight. Branches are also decorated with eggs and feathers.
Spring in Scandinavia sees insideoutside redefined, as furniture moves to terraces and decks, balconies get dressed with pots of spring bulbs and everyone gets busy with garden

DI SPL AY Build up your collection of vases – from statement pieces just as effective without flowers to smaller ones ideal for impromptu styling moments. Glass, whether hand-blown or recycled, remains a Scandi favourite, but watch out for ceramic and stoneware vases too; they’re creating some striking shapes this spring. very Nordic home needs a collection of vases, not only ready to fill with blooms but to create visual “moments” that make you smile around your home. Keep it understated with designs in handblown or recycled glass with a few informal wild flowers, or pop sprigs of olive twigs or foraged dried grasses into shapely ceramic or stoneware vessels to make a bolder statement.
STONEWARE STYLE Go for height and textural interest with our part-glazed, part-natural ceramic vase
Of course, the charm of our favourite vases is that they look just as beautiful when left empty, thanks to the shape, material and presence each gives to a room. Try clustering a set of small vases together on a simple tray, or pair two of the same style but in different sizes together on a shelf or mantelpiece. Whichever design catches your eye this spring, make sure it can be seen and loved, rather than tucked away waiting for blooms.
