Welcoming in winter Dear reader With great pleasure, I invite you to put the kettle on and settle down to our second edition of Life & Style. Creating this magazine has been such a labour of love for me, and I’m truly grateful for all your comments and feedback since launching the first ever edition in September. Our Winter magazine focuses on embracing the new season, inspired by Scandinavian traditions. So many of us get excited about autumn, but winter can be just as delightful when we relax into it. Once again, we have delicious Nordic recipes for you to try from Louise at Nordic Kitchen Stories. We explore the benefits of sleep and how to cultivate better rest as our bodies naturally slow down. There’s the draw of the fireside and how it can aid our wellbeing. Plus there are plenty of ideas and suggestions for enjoying the gift of giving this season. For me, winter is a wonderful time of the year, but it’s about embracing it for what it is. I have an obsession with texture, so I reach for soft blankets, natural wood, hand-crafted ceramics, and smooth porcelain. In winter, I get to layer myself in a cocoon of my favourite things and surround myself with light and beauty. And I encourage you to do the same. With lots of love,

We need gentle colours, soft surfaces and calming scents to allow our bodies and minds to release tension. Try colours that are easy on the eye and promote wellbeing, such as comforting blues or mild pastels. It’s not about boring – you’ll be surprised how uplifting simple colour shifts can be. Give yourself textures that your body adores. Touch is an incredibly grounding way to soothe your mind and body, so invest in soft linen bedding, sumptuous sheepskin rugs, and tactile ceramics. Lower the lighting for gentle relaxation. You won’t get much past 4pm in Scandinavia without a candle or cosy lamp. That means smartphones, too! Technology improves our lives in so many ways, but keeping us awake through the night is not one of them. The bright light of screens coupled with news stories and social media can keep us wired and worried, so keep phones, tablets and TVs out. eeping the fire wellstocked and welltended isn’t just vanity in Scandinavian homes. Even with the development of modern central heating, many families maintain a fire or log burner to see them through the long, cold winters. There’s something magical about gathering around a fire. We’ve been doing it for centuries – millennia, most likely. Fires provided heat, light and nourishment for families, and homes were built around them because they were so vital to survival and wellbeing. Scandinavian families don’t shy away from lighting a fire outside in the winter, either.
