Welcome WELCOME TO THE 2019 UCI CYCLO-CROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BOGENSE - SOMETHING SPECIAL

Gentlemen of the Press It gives us great pleasure to invite you and your media to participate at the 70th edition of the UCI CYCLO-CROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS which will take place in the beautiful surroundings of Bogense on February 2nd - 3rd 2019. This event is organized by CROSS DENMARK – a co-operation between Sport Event Denmark, DCU (the Danish Cycling Federation), Sport Event Fyn and North Funen Business and Tourism Association. In connection with the TELENET UCI CYCLO-CROSS WORLD CUP in November 2017, we had the pleasant experience of hosting many of you in Bogense, so some of you may already be familiar with life in Denmark and on Hans Christian Andersen’s native island of Funen. And by producing this small leaflet we hope to provide even more usable information for you to use in your own articles and commentary about the exciting event in Denmark. We will of course be producing a lot of further material in the months to come – and please do not hesitate to contact us to get all the information you may need. Best wishes and see you in Bogense February 2019. Finn T. THE EVENT REGION BOGENSE Bogense is situated on the North of Funen – on Nordfyn – and is a charming market town with about 3700 citizens. In 1288 Bogense was granted its rights as a market town. The church is from the middle ages and is dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, Saint Nicholas. In Bogense you can also find the smallest house in Denmark. The enchanting shoreline of Nordfyn is 154 kilometres long, making Nordfyn great for fishing, sailing and enjoying the sea on beautiful sandy beaches. Today, Bogense is a tourist centre with modern facilities and an active cultural life with shops, cafés and restaurants. There are numerous accommodation possibilities; shelters, caravan sites and motorhome sites, holiday apartments, B&Bs and hotels. WHAT TO SEE IN BOGENSE AND NORTH FUNEN There are many different things to see and do in and around Bogense, especially if you like nature and sports. Gyldensteen Strand (Gyldensteen Beach) is the largest re-established natural area on Funen and is located right outside Bogense. The 616 hectares was once a reclaimed area of fields and farmland, but now the dikes have been removed and the area flooded once again. It is now a beautiful area with a shallow coastal

lagoon, a freshwater lake and reed beds. Perfect for beautiful walks, birdwatching and picnics. You can get close to bison on prairie rides and while sleeping in shelters right next to the amazing animals on a large Bison Farm. There is also a restaurant serving bison meat and a shop selling bison products. The Glavendrup Stone is also worth a visit – it is a view into the viking past of North Funen. The stone is from aprox. year 900 and has the longest runic inscription ever found on a stone in Denmark. It is part of one of the largest preserved stone ships found in Denmark, and it is now the main attraction of a big beautiful grove. In the beautiful forests of Langesø, you will find two MTB tracks with a combined length of around 25 kilometres and different levels of complexity. It is open for everyone in return of a minor fee. You can also see some great monuments, for example the gorgeous Manneken Pis – the statue of the little naked boy peeing. Sometimes he plays dress-up in some beautiful little costumes made especially for the occasion. He is a copy of the Jerome du Quesnoy (1619) sculpture in Brussels. Tourist in Bogense? CYCLING IN DENMARK In Denmark, cycling is a way of life that dates back to the invention of the bicycle. Danes love cycling – both as a means of daily transportation to and from school, work and other routines. And as a spare time activity.

Andreassen (World Champion Junior 2015) as the biggest profiles.

It is estimated that all Danes between 10 and 84 years of age cover a distance of 1,6 kilometres a day all year round on their bicycle and that only the Dutch are a nation of more keen cyclists than the Danes. As far as fitness is concerned, a fast growing number of Danes use cycling as their daily or weekly training method – both individually and group organized. The biggest organized group is Team Rynkeby with 1.900 cyclists every summer covering 1200 kilometres to Paris in order to raise charity for seriously ill children. Since the start in 2002, Team Rynkeby has collected more than 28 million Euro. At elite level, Danish cycling has produced a lot of strong riders who at UCI road world championships have won 47 medals over the years. Danish riders have achieved exactly double that number – 94 World Championship medals – in track cycling over the years. Cyclo-cross has gained increasingly high popularity over the latest 20 years with Henrik Djernis (World Champion 1993) and Simon

2019 UCI CYCLO-CROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS BOGENSE On November 19th 2017, Bogense hosted the 4th leg of the Telenet UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup – the first World Cup race on Danish soil ever and the first major cyclo-cross event since the World Championships 1998 were held in Middelfart – a mere 20 kilometres from Bogense on the island of Funen.

The races in Bogense were transmitted to a vast number of countries world wide and millions of TV-viewers had a thrilling experience watching cyclo-cross in new and exciting surroundings – proving the “Something Special” tag that describes both the World Cup and the World Championships.

This event proved to be the perfect rehearsal for the World Championship: perfect weather, highly competitive races and a fine crowd of more than 3000 spectators.

The 2,9 kilometres long track in Bogense has some extraordinary features – especially on the steep hill near the church which has to be conquered four times, and the long path on the very edge of the sea.
