Mogalakwena remains the greenest of them all! The Mogalakwena municipality has been awarded the title of the province’s greenest municipality for the second year in a row, the Limpopo economic development environmental tourism department (LEDET) announced last week. This is another feather in the cap of the municipality that has received unqualified audit reports for the past three years and was recently named as one of the five most financially stable municipalities in the country. The municipality received a R3.5 million cash prize for winning the greenest munici-

pality award, which according to municipal manager William Kekana, will be channelled to other green projects. “Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being. "Our environment should always be protected, for the benefit of present and future generations, through reasonable legislative and other measures that prevent pollution and ecological degradation, promote conservation and secure ecologically sustainable development, he said.

"Winning twice in a row while competing with municipalities like Thulamela, Polokwane, Ephraim Mogale and Greater Tzaneen shows that we are heading in the right direction and that our passion is green, added community services manager, Merrima Molala. The mayor, Tlhalefi Mashamaite, attributed latest accolade to the dedicated efforts of the various departments within the municipality such as Waste Management Services, Health and Social Services and Water & Sanitation.

Albei was by hul positiewe.

At a recent Limpopo United Business Forum (LUBF) meeting in Polokwane, a decision was taken to move forward to the adoption of a constitution for the organisation on 12 December 2013. Present at the meeting were the business organisations AHi, BLA, BMF, FABCOS and NAFCOC, who all expressed their wholehearted support for an organisation that can speak on behalf of business in Limpopo as a whole. Various other organisations have also previously expressed their support for- and participation in the LUBF, but could not attend the meeting. LUBF sees itself as the conduit between local business and the provincial government for situations that cannot be resolved locally. To this end the Office of the Premier will be approached to schedule a first meeting with the premier for 2013 still. A code of conduct for the LUBF is in progress. Any organisation with at least a Limpopo regional footprint that has business as its focus, is invited to join the LUBF. For this purpose contact its chairperson, PC Mogale, through the BLA offices in Polokwane.

Almost a year after they robbed the Sasol garage in Onverwacht and hijacked two cars - nine suspects appeared in the regional court in Lephalale on charges of business robbery and car hijacking. Northern News reported in November last year that the suspects entered the Sasol garage shop just after 05:00 on a Monday morning and held a gun to the head of the manager, Deon Kloppers. They emptied the drop safe and hijacked two vehicles which belonged to clients before they fled the scene. A special police task team investigated the case and within a week five of the suspects were arrested. Last Thursday all nine of the men suspected of the crime appeared before judge M. Semenya. One of the suspects pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The remaining eight pleaded not guilty, two paid bail and six remained in custody. The case had to be postponed until 4 December because one of the suspects did not have his lawyer present.

Go easy on the booze this Christmas Police in Mokopane and Mahwelereng will be out in force this festive season, Mokopane Vispol commander Lt.Col. Isaac Mantjane warned at a recent CPF meeting. “We will be paying attention to issues such as alcohol abuse and the crimes that usually spring from that,” he said. Mantjane explained that while it is not an offence to consume alcohol, it is illegal to do so in public. One can also be locked up when one’s conduct under the influence of alcohol places other people in danger. Mantjane also warned that the police would be on the lookout for illegal meat

over the festive season. “Buy your meat from butcheries. Anything you buy from the road-side that was hacked up with pangas and not cut propperly, was probably stolen,” he said. He warned that such meat would be confiscated if anybody is caught with it. “The movement of meat and live stock is controlled by the stock theft unit. You can therefore expect to be pulled over if you are transporting a whole lot of chickens on your bakkie. Make sure you are on the right side of the law,” Mantjane added. He asked that the public respect the police and their work this festive season.

Nie veilig in jou eie huis

ATM and Stokvel robbers

Polisie woordvoerder, A.O.

Police and members of the Mokopane Community Policing Forum have called on the public to be vigilant when drawing money at ATMs this time of year. Several attempted robberies at ATM machines been reported for November, one of the delegates at the recent CPF meeting said. Mokopane Vispol commander, Lt.Col. Isaac Mantjane, noted that this time of year many members of Stokvel initiatives come to town to draw cash. “Don’t let your year’s savings be taken by criminals. He advised that organisers of Stokvels rather get banking details for all members and that savings be transferred into bank accounts instead of large amounts of cash being drawn.

Young man dies in hit and run A 23 year-old Lephalale resident was killed early Sunday morning on Nelson Mandela Avenue when he was hit by a car near the water tower. The driver fled the scene and not much is known about the incident. A colleague of the victim told Northern News this week that the victim was walking home from a friend's house when it is suspected that he was run over by a car. Anyone with information can phone the Lephalale police on 014 762 1000.

When robbers pose as cops At a recent Community Policing Forum Meeting the youth in Mahwelereng expressed concern over imposters posing as police during robbery attempts. CPF chairperson, Andy Goetsch, advised that when people fear they are being followed or pulled over by what might be illigit police or traffic officers, they should simply slow down, drive to a well-lit public area such as a filling station. “Once you are there you can get out of your car and present yourself to these police or traffic officials.” Mokopane Vispol commander, Lt.Col. Isaac Mantjane, added that the public has the right to ask for an appointment certificate.

LEPHALALE – The escalation of crime during the festive season was the main topic of discussion at last week’s Community policing forum. House breaking statistics remain high and the rape of a 10-year-old and elderly lady in the area highlighted crimes against women and children. The absolute disregard for traffic laws in town was also raised as a concern, not only for residents but also for the traffic department who with a shortage of personnel have to police the roads in town. Drunken driving and ignoring traffic signals remain the biggest challenge. Another concern raised at the meeting was the dumping of refuse in open plots in town. It was mentioned that people should take pride in their town and help the municipality to keep it clean. Property owners are by law responsible for the cleanliness of their own properties but walkers by who dump their rubbish anywhere should be fined said Eloff. Residents can phone their ward councillors or Joshua Hlapa at the municipality in this regard. At the meeting safety jackets were handed out to two CPF members in each ward. These representatives will assist police where possible.

Life sentence for rapist LEPHALALE – Convicted rapist, Jan Monanyane (22), received a life sentence in the Lephalale regional court on Thursday for the kidnapping and rape of a woman (21) in June 2011. According to the prosecutor, advocate Lizel Delfrate, rape is becoming a serious problem in the Lephalale area. During the sentencing procedure Delfrate told the judge, Magistrate M. Semenya, that the community will soon take matters in their own hands if the courts don’t impose harsher sentences for the rape of women and children in the area. She told the court that during a weekend in early June 2011 Monanyane kidnapped his victim and held her hostage. The woman was raped and stabbed with a knife several times over that weekend. The accused later resisted arrest, but was detained and held until sentencing on Thursday. Monanyane was also sentenced for housebreaking for which he received a further 5 years and another 12 months imprisonment for resisting arrest.

Body found at bus station LEPHALALE - A body was discovered at the bus station next to the Magistrate’s court in Lephalale on Saturday morning. According to W.O. Frans Mokoena it is not clear how the man died. A local hairdresser, who works from a stall at the bus station discovered the body and contacted the police. The deceased had identification documentation on him, but cannot be named until his family has been notified. According to the police report the man had a shoelace tied around his neck. A murder case was opened at the Lephalale police station. Anyone with information can contact the police at 014 762 1000.

Shack and shops burn in Marapong Local residents in Marapong who are fed up with crime in their community took to the streets last Thursday and burnt down three shacks and two tuck shops belonging to Zimbabwean nationals. According to Marapong resident and DA councillor, Stephen Manamela, residents are concerned that crime is escalating in Marapong and the community blames the Zimbabweans. Manamela suggested that the recently established committee of documented Zimbabweans in Marapong be approached to help police trace undocumented foreigners who they believe are responsible for a lot of the crimes perpetrated in the area.

“Zimbabweans who have the necessary documents and who work hard to earn a living are concerned that their fellow countrymen who are not currently employed and who are involved in criminal activities are making life difficult for them. "We will be working with the police to ensure that there are no further incidents of violence and that undocumented foreigners are arrested.” Warrant officer Frans Mokoena confirmed this week that a case of malicious damage to property was opened at the Lephalale police station. He could not confirm whether anyone was arrested following the incident.

No Violence against Women and Children week Government has once again launched the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. This international campaign takes place from 25 November to 10 December. According to Lephalale SAPS, spokesperson W.O. Frans Mokoena the SAPS will be having its own door to door campaign at Mamojelea park, the taxi rank at Shoprite, Marapong and Steenbokpan. The Mokopane police will have a similar door-to-door campaign in Ext. 19, said police spokesperson Const. Irene Masingi. Community members are encouraged to support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon during the 16-day period. The

ribbon is a symbol of peace and symbolises the commitment of the person wearing it to never commit or condone violence against women and children. Get involved by helping to plant a garden at a shelter, sponsor plastic tables and chairs for kids at a clinic or join an organisation as a counsellor, participating in the various 16 Days of Activism events and activities and also volunteering in support of NGOs and community groups who support abused women and children. People who are abused can also get help at the Stop Gender-Based Violence Helpline 0800 150 150 and Childline 0800 055 555.

Mokopane’s infamous tree chopping vagrant, Thabang Nxumalo, won’t be able to tend to his ‘farm’ at the Dorps River bridge in Pretorius Street. He was arrested last week and appeared in court on Monday. He is held in contempt of court for failing to adhere to an eviction order obtained by the municipality. This follows reports of him throwing bottles and stones at passers-by and concerned citizens who tried to approach him on his indiscriminate and illegal cutting of trees on this public land. Northern News editor, Jasper Raats, went to investigate and also fell victim to the man’s stone throwing and verbal abuse. A vast portion of land on the banks of the river has already been cleared of indigenous trees to make way for the malicious man’s subsistence crops. He even sells the wood he illegally chops without any consequences. Nxumalo is said to intimidate anyone who ventures close to his ‘operation’ with people being afraid to walk past this vacant land. Daléne and Freddy van Eyk, who own a factory in the industrial area, say their workers are too afraid to cross the river at the bridge because the man regularly threatens them. Nxumalo will appear in court again next week.

Stories uit die Bosveld

Noordelike Nuus / Northern News

29 November 2013

So asof die koedoe weet ek het nie een enkele patroon by my nie, bly hy staan. Sy horings was tamaai. Later maak ek my bladsak oop en drink 'n slukkie water.

‘n plan in my kop. Man, toe ek klaar is, sou jy kon sweer hy kom uit Krygkor se fabriek. Nou kyk, ek is 'n ou jagter

Die takke buig sommer so ondertoe so swaar is hulle. My mond water skoon.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Mmatladi sports academy from Shoangoane will be competing with Skimzozo u/15 at 10:00. The game will be the opener of the Vodacom league game for Young killers playing against Modimolle Aces at the Mogol sports ground at 15:00.
