COUNTRYSIDE The gently meandering River Stour forms the backbone of this beautiful area; it is one of many picturesque countryside sites and open spaces to explore. Breathe in the scent of bluebells in an ancient woodland, photograph the vibrant colours of traditional heathland or enjoy sweeping panoramas from Iron Age hill forts RYHUSDWFKZRUNĂ€HOGV7DNHLQWKHVHDDLU and stunning views over the coast from the Christchurch coastal path or get the binoculars to the ready at Stanpit Marsh, where an unusual combination of habitats provides a home for

COAST Christchurch’s spectacular location at the edge of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and on the shores of its own natural harbour makes it the perfect location to relax and enjoy stunning views across the four miles of coastline and indulge in a host of water activities. Each of the six beaches has its own individuality, some cater for families and people with disabilities and others are less commercial and welcome dogs. THE EBB & FLOW OF HISTORY 0DJQLÀFHQWFKXUFKHVJUDQGEXLOGLQJV and scenic mills, the historic borough of Christchurch and the heritage market towns of Wimborne Minster, Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury share many links. Christchurch’s historic Priory Quarter is in the heart of the town centre, dominated by the stunning Priory Church with its excellent architecture ranging from Norman through to Renaissance. The gracious Minster Church of

seum use Mu Red Ho

St Cuthburga in Wimborne Minster also dates from the Norman period; its unusual artifacts include an Astronomical Clock and a rare Chained Library dating from 1686. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of both of these timeless buildings, and each hosts a regular programme of concerts and events. The grandeur continues at Kingston Lacy (NT) with the splendour of the Spanish Room, lavishly gilded in leather and a renowned art collection. The superb cliff-top mansion of Highcliffe Castle, built between 1831 and 1835, is described as “the most important remaining example of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture. Both of these great houses have wide ranging events and exhibitions.

Christchurch Castle was built in the late 11th Century to protect the town’s and river access to the interior of Wessex. The once luxurious Constable’s Hall has the oldest Norman chimney in Britain and was built around 1150. The stone keep, (slighted after 1650), replaced a wooden structure about 1300. The castle saw action in the Anarchy about 1147 and in the Civil War in 1645. www.visitchristchurch.info

A GUIDE TO ACCOMMODATION Your accommodation is an important part of your holiday. All of our hotels, B&Bs, farmhouses, inns, self-catering properties and touring parks offer a warm welcome and excellent service. All of the properties featured in this brochure meet the standards set by the Dorset Approved Visitor Accommodation Scheme, which is accredited by VisitEngland. Many properties have undertaken a more comprehensive assessment as part of the National Quality Assurance Scheme operated by VisitEngland and the AA. These schemes use a star rating system of 1-5 stars; all rating levels

Both scheme use an egg cup symbol to show serviced properties whose breakfasts are of exceptional quality. Some properties offer facilities particularly suited to visitors with special needs and these are recognised with the relevant symbols. A separate guide for visitors with special needs is available from Christchurch and Wimborne Tourist Information Centres. Some properties offer additional services or facilities for walkers, cyclists, families or those travelling with pets and have been thus awarded.

offer clean, well run accommodation with 5 stars indicating an exceptional degree of luxury. In this guide you will see the rating shown in the top right of each accommodation entry; a rosette

to show it is part of the VisitEngland

Scheme and

to indicate participation in the

AA scheme. Under the AA scheme Gold Stars are awarded to the best guest accommodation within the 3, 4 and 5 star ratings.

Other businesses have shown their commitment to operating in an environmentally sensitive manner through participation in the Green Tourism Business Scheme or, for holiday parks, the David Bellamy Conservation Awards.

The VisitEngland scheme awards Gold and Silver to those that deliver a standard of service over and above their rating.

Map ref: J1

The hilltop town of Shaftesbury, at 700ft, is Dorset’s highest town and offers stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Its unique location inspired Kings to settle here; its Saxon Benedictine Abbey was founded in 888AD by King Alfred. Soak up the atmosphere at the Abbey ruins or stroll the cobbles of one of England’s most iconic streets, Gold Hill, made famous by director Ridley Scott and his popular 1970s Hovis advert. Pay a visit to some of the traditional shops and contemporary stores, discover Gold Hill Museum and recharge the batteries with lunch
