THYME AND GARLIC CHUCK ROAST Ingredients:

Directions:

• 4 - 5 Pound boneless chuck roast • 8 Large cloves of garlic • 2 Tablespoons of thyme • 2 Tablespoons of parsley • 8 Medium red potatoes, quartered • 4 Medium onions, quartered • 1 Small bag of baby carrots, cut in half • 4 Stalks of celery, chopped • 1 Can of diced tomatoes • 2 Tablespoons of olive oil • 2 Cups of water

Preheat oven to 425 F. Put 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet and brown both sides of the chuck roast, then put into a roasting pan. Peel and slice garlic and put into the same skillet with drippings and saute until infused. Put the garlic on top of the roast. Sprinkle the thyme and parsley on top of the garlic. Add 2 cups of water to the skillet to loosen all of the meat drippings and pour over the top of the roast. Cook for 2 hours at 425 F. While this is cooking, prepare your veggies to add to the roast, except tomatoes. After the roast has cooked for 2 hours, add 1 can of diced tomatoes on top, then add the other veggies. Stir gently and continue cooking for 1 more hour, checking the tenderness of the meat. It is ready to serve when meat shreds with a fork and potatoes are tender.

How to . . .

How To Guide...

Publishes Aug. 17th Valley News & Aug. 18th Herald-Journal

. . .Choose a Hearing Aid Hearing is considered by many to be our most vital sense. It enables you to process everyday sounds to communicate and safely interact in your daily environment 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As hearing diminishes, everyday sounds once taken for granted are no longer apparent. Maybe it’s just a matter of turning up the TV, asking others to repeat themselves, or pretending it’s not a problem. What happens when your inability to hear everyday sounds causes not only embarrassment, but more serious consequences? Consider the number of automobile accidents caused by a driver failing to hear warning signals. This puts both the hearing impaired driver and the public at risk. There are also the potential dangers of not hearing telephones, doorbells, security alarms, or smoke detectors. Untreated hearing loss in contemporary society can be a risky choice, but fortunately, with today’s advanced digital technology the majority of hearing losses are treat-

able.

Hearing Loss Indicators Currently in the United States, an estimated 28 million people suffer from varying degrees of hearing impairment. As America’s population ages, hearing loss has become increasingly prevalent; 70 percent of all impaired people are older than age 45. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, hearing impairment is the third most common problem affecting the Baby Boom generation. The good news is that most hearing losses can be effectively treated with digital amplification. The key for effective treatment and rehabilitation is to identify a hearing loss in the early stages.

Causes of Hearing Loss Hearing loss is invisible and almost always painless. There are no physical warning signs, except for the occasional cases of tinnitus or ringing in the ear(s).

Most hearing losses develop over a period of 25 to 30 years and often get gradually worse with age. Typically between the ages 45 to 60, there can be enough deterioration to interfere with communication. Hearing researchers believe that hearing loss in older adults is the accumulation of two or more causes, such as exposure to loud noise, family history or simply the natural aging process. In most cases, there is damage to the microscopic hair cells (cilia) in the inner ear causing irreversible hearing loss. For the vast majority of individuals with nerve damage or sensorineural hearing loss, the damaged hair cells will function again if vigorously stimulated with amplification.

Effects of Hearing Loss Hearing loss can significantly reduce the quality of life that you worked and hoped for so long to achieve. It can restrict and inhibit your ability to interact with others, pre-

vent you from hearing vital information, cause misunderstandings, heighten stress, cause unnecessary fatigue and may perhaps lead to shorter life expectancy. Hearing loss can also socially isolate a person from society and their families, strain relationships and cause or aggravate emotional disorders. Early identification plays a vital role in limiting the adverse affects of hearing loss. It starts with a simple hearing test.

be successfully treated and no person is ever too old to benefit from improved communication that’s possible with hearing aid usage. Others feel their hearing loss just isn’t “bad enough” to warrant treatment, or that seeking treatment would carry the stigma of advancing age. Others are simply embarrassed at the idea of wearing a hearing aid. An important thought to keep in mind; a hearing loss is more noticeable than today’s discrete, digital hearing aids.

Admitting to Hearing Loss

IMPROVING your hearing

Often, people with a mild to moderate hearing loss deny the fact that they need help. Those who are close to them are much more likely to notice the impact hearing loss has on their quality of life. Some people choose to ignore their loss because they believe hearing aids can’t help their specific loss or think they are too old to benefit from amplification. In fact, 95 percent of all losses can

The very first step on the road to better hearing is admitting to yourself that you may have a hearing problem. Many times it’s the most difficult step in the entire process. As soon as you admit to the problem, the rest of the treatment process will become easier and well worth your while. If questions about your hearing have crossed your mind recently, it’s probably a good idea to have your hearing evaluated.
