Mutton Busting

Cooper Knickman, of Dunlap, is positioned onto the back of a sheep by fair board member Derrick Janssen.

Mutton busting was a new event at the Crawford County Fair this year. On Sunday afternoon youth had the opportunity to put on helmets and to try to stay onboard a sheep for a short ride. Above, Ryan Shearer hangs on tight as his sheep bursts from the chute. Shearer is from Littleton, Colorado, and was in the area visiting relatives, the Ron McCord family in Dunlap. Photos by Gordon Wolf

A contestant comes bolting out the chute on the back of a sheep while youth line the top of the fence to watch the action. Bleachers around the outdoor horse arena, where the event took place, were filled, too.

Four-year-old Marley Boettger was dressed in her pink bull riding outfit and was excited after her mutton busting ride. She pulls her father, Bob Boettger, back toward the chute.
