When Minutes Count At Clarinda Regional Health Center (CRHC), our motto is “Advancing Exceptional Care.” We strive to offer the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies as well as providing exceptional, compassionate care. Each department and clinic within the hospital advances their skills as providers through continuing education in order to provide the best possible care to our patients. Advances in Emergency Medical Services are no exception. The Clarinda Regional Health Center’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team is one of the most advanced in the area. When the CRHC EMS ambulance is called, patients can rest assured they are receiving a quick response (18-second average from the 911 page to rolling out of the garage). If you are a cardiac patient, not only is help mere minutes away, but the CRHC EMS team has implemented advanced cardiac diagnostic and treatment procedures to increase your chances of a positive outcome during a cardiac event.

Elm Heights Residents Riding in Style Oh the places you will go! Mobility just became easier for the residents of Elm Heights Care Center and Assisted Living with the purchase of two new vehicles. A special, made to order, Ford E-350 Van and a Chrysler Town & Country minivan were recently purchased to transport residents to appointments and activities. The large van has a rear lift to accommodate persons who use a wheelchair or walker to enter and exit. The van can seat up to 9 passengers or 3 people in wheelchairs and 3 people in van seats. Hand rails inside assist passengers as they enter or exit and the high ceiling allows passengers to walk comfortably with ample headroom. This flex-fuel vehicle can run on E-85 or unleaded fuel. The minivan features a wheelchair ramp and can seat up to 2 people in wheelchairs and 3 people in passenger seats. This smaller van is easy to handle and can be driven by staff members without requiring a special drivers license.

The Clarinda EMS department now has the capability to transmit live to the emergency department at the hospital in Clarinda or on-call cardiologists in Lincoln, NE, patient EKG information from the patient’s living room or from the ambulance en route. Our EMS medics on-scene or in the ambulance will contact the cardiologist directly, and if the cardiologist orders it, our medics will administer a Thrombolytic IV therapy in the field before reaching the medical facility. This Thrombolytic medication will potentially dissolve or break up the coronary artery clot and re-establish blood flow to the affected portion of the heart. Our medics then contact LifeNet and establish a rendezvous point for the ambulance to meet the helicopter at a pre-determined location between the scene and Lincoln, NE. The patient will go directly from the field to the helicopter and then to BryanLGH’s cardiac center. “Minutes mean muscle” This advanced procedure for treating cardiac patients will save approximately 30-45 minutes between the arrival of the EMS crew and the patient’s arrival in the catheterization lab at BryanLGH. This time savings translates into the potential for a better outcome for the patient. At present, the Clarinda Regional Health Center EMS team is the only service in the state of Iowa utilizing these protocols to treat cardiac patients in the field using the Thrombolytic medication. It’s another example of how Clarinda Regional Health Center is “Advancing Exceptional Care.”

15th Annual Golf Benefit

Neal Peterson: Registered Sleep Technologist

Plan the Perfect Golf Getaway! Shenandoah Healthcare Foundation

Neal Peterson, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Shenandoah Medical Center and Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, recently received credentials from the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) as a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST). Certification by the ABSM represents the highest standard in clinical sleep medicine and demonstrates to their peers and to the public that they have the skills and knowledge essential for the delivery of excellent patient care.

The American Legion Country Club in Shenandoah is your place for spectacular golf! The immaculately manicured eighteen hole golf course continues to be a superb host for our four person mixed team scramble. Call a friend and join us on June 7th for the 15th Annual Shenandoah Healthcare Foundation Golf Benefit! Registration will begin at 11:00 am with lunch and cold beverages following at 11:30 am. Golfers need to be in their carts and ready to play at 12:30 pm for the shot gun start. Fees include lunch, green fees, beverages and dinner. Individuals may golf for $100 and teams play for $400. A $1200 sponsorship (a $1440 value) includes lunch, dinner, beverages, golf carts, a foursome, green fees and your company banner prominently displayed throughout the day.

Sleep studies, or polysomnograms, study a patient’s sleep habits for symptoms of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and insomnia. Peterson conducts sleep studies at the Shenandoah Medical Center Sleep Center and will soon be offering home sleep studies – an option allowing patients to complete their sleep studies in the convenience of their own home. Neal Peterson RPSGT, RST

Shenandoah Medical Center’s Cardiopulmonary Services department focuses on seven different areas of testing and diagnostics. In addition to sleep studies, respiratory therapists perform EKGs to monitor a patient’s heart rate, rhythm, and electrical activity and can collect and analyze ambulatory EKGs for up to 30 days by using portable cardiac event recorders. They also conduct EEGs which measure the electrical activity of the brain and perform treadmill and pharmacologic stress tests. The respiratory therapists administer oxygen when needed and ventilators for life support. They work closely with the cardiologists, pulmonologists, and family practice physicians to determine appropriate treatment for patients.

Proceeds from the benefit will go towards the purchase of labor and delivery beds or to the 4th Annual Children’s Health Fair for the Shenandoah Medical Center. Your support of past benefits has allowed us to purchase life saving equipment and make many beneficial improvements in the SMC facilities. Golfers will have the opportunity to win a new car and three additional hole-in-one prizes! End your day with dinner and a live auction. Guests are welcome to join the fun!

The Shenandoah Medical Center's Cardiopulmonary Services Department is staffed entirely with registered respiratory therapists, a remarkable accomplishment that very few hospitals nationwide have achieved. Year after year, the Respiratory Therapy Department at SMC continues to earn the American Association for Respiratory Care's Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Award. Approximately fifteen percent of hospitals in the United States have received this award, with only eight hospitals in Iowa achieving this status last year.

We look forward to a fantastic day, complete with great golf, gourmet food catered by SMC Catering, and good fellowship.

"Our department has very high standards of care," says Peterson. "We treat our patients with compassion while providing pulmonary services on the leading edge of technology. We strive to be very proactive in assisting physicians to manage the needs of their patients with lung problems."

This year marks the 15th year of Shenandoah Healthcare Foundation Golf Benefits. Over that time you have supported us and our many fundraising projects. Thanks to your generosity this benefit has been a huge success!

As many as 30 million kinds of plants and animals live in the rainforest. The trees and other plants that make up the rainforest grow together so densely that they create layers, each with different climate characteristics. Read about the layers. Then follow the directions to color the rainforest picture.

In the upper layer, the tops of the tallest trees form a canopy that spreads out over smaller trees and plants. Some of these trees grow to be 200 feet high. Plenty of sunlight reaches this layer, making it the hottest layer of the rainforest. Eagles, monkeys, bats and butterflies Color the sky blue, the treetops bright green and the trunks brown.

This is the most colorful of the layers. Since the upper canopy shades the harshest sunlight, this lower canopy receives a filtered light in which flowers and vines grow. The vines grow from tree to tree, forming a woven maze. Snakes, toucans, treefrogs

Shen cheerleading has got all the right moves By JASON GLENN

When you use your Debit Card.

At almost every Mustang sports event, there are a dozen or so highly conditioned, top-notch athletes who go virtually unheralded. Part of that is the fact that they are there in a supporting and not starring role but largely it’s because cheerleaders often don’t get the credit they’re due. “Generally, in Iowa cheerleading is all about supporting your other athletic programs, it’s about getting the crowd involved, and we love that, that’s what we’re about,” said Tara Christiansen, coach of the Shenandoah wrestling cheer team. “But we also want them to understand that cheerleading is also a sport and if you want to go on to the next level or go to state competitions, you pretty much just have to choose cheerleading.” Though the three Shen cheer-

leading squads – football, basketball and wrestling – obviously align their performances with the teams they support, the program as a whole started its true yearly cycle two weeks ago with tryouts. In a demanding process that lasted the entire week of Feb. 27 to March 2, Christiansen and her football and basketball counterparts, coaches Angela Trowbridge and Heather Diekmann, oversaw the instruction, assessment and selection of next year’s roster of spirit rousers. Beginning that Monday morning, veterans and hopefuls alike were asked to learn moves and routines, become fluent in the rules and regulations of cheerleading as well as the sports they wanted to cheer for, and, by Friday, pass written quizzes and a final cheer performance in front of a panel of judges from other schools and organizations. Every candidate was required to attend

at least one practice a day, but many took advantage of both the morning and afternoon sessions to ensure they had the moves down and the routine solid. With almost 40 kids vying for a spot, tryouts weren’t as packed as last year when 60 were trying to make the cut, but Diekmann said the numbers were still good and the program was coming off of a 2011-12 campaign in which they took their performances to a new level. The most overt way that new level was displayed was with the squad’s performance of their most demanding and difficult “extreme routine” ever, an almost 3-minute marathon of dance, step routines, formations and stunts. To put the challenge in perspective, last year’s extreme routine was somewhere in the 30-40 second range. Diekmann said this year’s extreme routine, which they performed at the Shenandoah vs.

Clarinda basketball game and at the booster club’s fundraising game, represented a commitment by the girls to put in more practice hours. “Every year we try to make it better,” she said. “Last year, we just did the dance with the stunt at the end. This year we did the dance several times and incorporated all this stunting and new formations. We’ve never done stunts that big.” And while the accomplishment is a big payoff for the cheerleaders themselves, Christiansen said pulling off a big show is important to getting the next generation of involved. “When we do our extreme routine, it’s strictly for entertainment purposes, it’s basically a really good advertisement,” Christiansen said. “When the crowd is watching our girls do something that’s really spectacular, these little girls are thinking,

‘I want to do that, I want to be a cheerleader.’ And the parent is thinking, ‘I want my kid to be a part of this.’” But before they get to be a part of the glory, the have to run the gauntlet of tryout week. And that’s something that can be nerve wracking and rewarding for everybody. Coaches included “It’s the start of a new cheer year, essentially, and you can look around and see familiar faces and say, ‘I remember when you mastered this and you were really awesome at that.’ And then seeing all the new faces that are just as nervous as I am because they don’t know exactly what to expect and what they are going to bring to the table,” Trowbridge said. “It’s a lot of emotions tied up into one but it’s a positive experience.”

Thompson, Cruickshank, and Hardy named to All Area team By MATT PRIETO

Staff Writer

Andrew Thompson (Sr., Nishnabotna) Thompson has become a fixture on most All-Area lists and his 15-3 points per game this season are a large part of his return again this winter. 15.3 was good enough for third in the Corner Conference. He was also top 10 in steals (2nd – 76), assists (7th, 76), and Rebounds (6.9 per game, 10th). Thompson led Botna in everything but blocked shots. Tyler Steeve (Sr., Clarinda) Steeve, another repeat selection was the catalyst this season for Clarinda and a huge part of the Cardinals first ever state tournament

win. He was third overall in the Hawkeye 10 conference with 15.7 points per game this season. He was in the top five in every category besides blocked shots, including 92 assists, 56 steals and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Brandon Sweet (Sr, Clarinda) One of Clarinda's sharpshooters this year. Sweet shot 42 percent from three point range this season and was second on his team in steals. Kramer Samuelson (Sr., Clarinda) Clarinda's assist leader, in addition to scoring seven points per game.

Casey Cruickshank (Sr., Sidney) Cruickshank was Mr. Blue Collar this year for the Cowboys and had the task of guarding some of the most physical opponents in the area. He averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game this season. His 82 assists led the Cowboys this season. Cruickshank is a repeat first team selection.

Levi Allen (Sr. Essex) Allen led Essex in scoring, assists and steals this season and was the unquestioned leader on the court for the Trojans. Drew Bayless (Sr., Shenandoah) Scoring and rebounding

leader this season for the Mustangs. His 6.3 rebounds per game were 10th best in the Hawkeye 10 this season. Alex Hiatt (Sr., Clarinda) The Cardinals were deep this season. Hiatt scored nearly seven points per game and shot 77 percent from the free throw line. He averaged seven points per game in the post season. Jacob Peterman (Jr., South Page) Chances are Peterman touched the ball the vast majority of the time South Page scored this season. He averaged eight points per game and led the Rebels with 63 assists.

Allen

Brendon Hardy (Sr., Sidney) If Cruickshank was a hammer, Hardy was a laser. Possibly the most feared player in the Corner Conference with the game on the line, an inspired Hardy was sure to cause opposing defenses nightmares. He scored 12.3 points game and added 52 assists and without his clutch shooting it would have been difficult for the Cowboys to win the CC Tournament. This is the second year in a row Hardy has earned a spot on the first team.

Bayless

Kalif Brown (Sr., C.A.) Brown's stats were on par with any players in the area. Brown scored 13 points per game this season for the

high-powered Eagles offense. His 8.3 rebounds per game were third overall in the Corner Conference. He led the conference with 123 assists and 82 steals. This is his first appearance on the all area team.
