Throughout my personal college career, I was always given projects to design, and not to say that I was not passionate about everything I designed, but there is always a level of restrictions when it comes to attending a design school. That is why throughtout the eniterity of this capstone class, it was incredibly refreshing to have the enitre freedom in coming up with projects and implementing them. I will always be passionate about design aspects such as branding, ux/ui, logo design, etc. However, during this capstone class, I truly wanted to expand my design horizons, stray away from the expected, and explore new passions and ideas. My future career goals involve working in industries like the music, movie, and gaming industries, and becuase of that, I decided to create things that will help as I try and pursue my place in those industries. Becuase of this, I wanted to fully explore the potentional in topics and ideas that I was truly passionate about such as motion graphics, concept art, as well as follow current design trends in order to remain up to date with the design world as well as current popular designers that I truly am inspired by. Throughout this process book, you will see design that is purly experimental, as I try and make my way into my dream careers.

Personal Manifesto:

CAPSTONE 2020 | IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Inspiration: My personal manifesto was inspired by my love for futuristic themes of identity, what it means to be human, and how to reclaim our assistance in the universe. Concepts that have not only been prominent in cyberpunk and dystopian stories, but they continue to be become a reality especially with the current global politics, class, and climate change issues. The design is also inspired by retro cyberpunk graphics to convey a more glitched out aspect and feel.

CAPSTONE 2020 | IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Objective: Develop a personal design manifesto that includes at least 5 bullet point, and turn it into a poster and a zine.

WE A K NES S + R E SE ARC H Personal Weakness: My personal design weakness that I chose for this prooject was overthinking the small details. At the beginning of any project, I tend to spend hours looking for inspiration, and when I do find it, I spend a few more hours debating color palettes and typefaces. To approach this weakness, I deicded to make a short experimental video using After Effects and many randomized pre-existsing effects in it, without overthinking any of the small details. Topic:

CAPSTONE 2020 | IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

CAPSTONE 2020 | IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Objective: Identify a weakness as a designer, and address it through a short, low risk project partaining to a completly randomized design topic.

The random topic I recieved for this project was Lyriothemis Acigastra, which is a species of dragonfly in the family of Libellulidae known from India. The International Union for Conservation of Nature also cites very old collections in Burma, China and Tibet.

5

To produce a mostly randomized motion graphics video, I started by creating a cutout of the insect silhouette and placing it as the top layer in After Effects, and then using a few different existing color and shape presets as well as a few keyframes here and there to create a looping color, and shape shifting effect.

Objective: Designing a new product, service, or experience using the phrase “It’s like [blank], but for [blank]. The first blank being an existing platform or service drawn at random, and the second part being how you would define your capstone topic idea.

6

The existing platform that I drew at random was Twitter, and I defined my capstone idea as a “visual simulation experience” It’s like twitter, but for visual simulation experiences! Result: Visualex, a platform for the creation, posting, and sharing of visual messages that can be made using countless combination options from backgrounds, fonts colors, and motion effect, made by and for those who seek uniquness and attention.

To acompany the presentation, I created a series of motion graphics that acted as the different ways that people can use the platform, and tried to show how each short message can be as different and as unique from the next one, using many different After Effects methods to create unique short clips.

Objective: To clearly identify my capstone topic in a word or a short phrase while demonstrating strong use of grid, typography, and clear hierarchy.

8

Research: Prior to this project, I was still struggling to exactly define what I wanted my capstone to be, I knew I wanted to make something related to aspects from movies and video games that I was already inspired by, but I wasn’t sure exactly what. This is when I started to research potentional interesting topics related to any futuristic themes and concepts. Eventually, I came across the concept of Heterotopia, According to Wikipedia, “Heterotopia is a concept elaborated by philosopher Michel Foucault to describe certain cultural, institutional and discursive spaces that are somehow ‘other’: disturbing, intense, incompatible, contradictory or transforming. Heterotopias are worlds within worlds, mirroring and yet upsetting what is outside.” This concept is where I got the inspiration for the direction that I wanted to take for my capstone, which to somehow create a world resembling our own, while taking inspirations from films and games to create something completly unique.

To make the poster itself, I tried to envision an easier way to visuilize the word Heterotopia, and the best way I thoought of to help me do that is by using a stock image of a mannequin, to resemble something that is “human” but somehow “other” at the same time.

I heard it a lot before everything started

I slowely started to add other elements to help achieve the “futuristic” asthetic that I have always been inspired by. Using Adobe Photoshop for color and filter editing, and Adobe Illustrator for background line work along with my Wacom Intous Tablet. Choosing the typface was the most difficult part, as I also wanted to convey the same “otherness” feeling through typeface itself, until I discovered the typeface “Neue Machina,” which was created by one of my favorite designers, Baugasm, and shared free for personal use.

NAR R ATI ON AN D ST O RYTEL LI NG

A personal, experimental short video project inspired by the recent events of the year 2020 as well as my love for the cyberpunk genre.

The idea for the story was directly inspired by recent events surrounding COVID-19. I noticed an increased amount of posts on social media from people talking and often even joking, about how this year has felt completly like a failing simulation, and how the unfolding events made the world seem a little unreal.

Topics include: Narration and Storytelling: Concept Art Motion Graphics Music and Sound

12

Aside from the inspiration, writing is probably one of my least strongest suits, as it is something I have never tried to tap into, unlike the rest of the topics from the previous slide that I decided to tackle. Becuase of this, I resorted to critically think about how to write a good narrative for the first time ever, and the best way I decided to approach the issue is by writing something that felt a little more personal. I imagined what I would say to a friend or a sibling if an apocalypse were to happen, and the words slowely started to flow.

I heard it a lot before everything started “Hey, does the world seem, a little unreal to you recently?” I didn’t need people to remind me, I already felt the ominous oblivion surround ing us like a shifted reality Every sentimental value we hold towards things, places, objects, memories, and experiences have shifted recently. After my recently increased interest in concept art, and my ever growing love for movies and video games, as well as the recent COVID-19 events, I was finally inspired enough to decide on my capstone project, and chose concepts that not only am I very passionate about, but also topics that I thought would challenge me enough and help me grow as an artist and a designer.

After tackling the narration, and while still being inspired by the topic of a cyberpunk Heterotopia, I started on planning a visual concept.

-Topia is extracted from utopia, and the word tópos, meaning “place” in Ancient Greek.

Result: Cyberpunk concept art visuals of different known cities in the world, visualizing the progression of how apocalyptic events slowly take over each city, revealing a fully apocalyptic world by the time we reach the visuals of the last city. The cities are: New York, London, Rome, Tokyo, Paris, Cairo, and Sydney. I tried to choose specific cities based off of how recognizable each city would be according to its known monuments.

14

Going into this project, I knew I wanted to create a world that is neutral, not good, and not bad either. An aspect that gives the power to the viewer to decide for themselves after watched. The words Utopia and Dystopia are widlly known, but they both carry their positive and negative conotations, which contradictis my vision of leaving the power of choice to the viewer. This is why using just the suffix “topia” seemed perfect, becuase a topia is just a “place,” it can be a Utopia, a Dystopia, or a Heterotopia.

Circles often represent things that are complete, whole, one pieces, in this case a circle also represents planet earth, which is why I chose to add a slash, beucase in -Topia, planet earth is not whole and unchanged, it is drastically different from what we know it to be.

It was important to me that the logo is simple, yet powerful, and would act as an addition to the final video while not overshadowing each piece of concept art. This is why I chose a simple outline, with the dash acompanying the suffix.

25

I also tried to choose a main font that has a clean and recognizable outline, to serve as a logo overlay.

CAPSTONE 2020 | IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

The typeface choice also had to be intentional, and becuase the narrative being a bit like a message from a place in time to another place in time, I wanted to choose typefaces that seemed futuristic, while also having an old, vintage, typewriter letter feeling to them.

SO UND Another important aspect of this project was the sound direction. From the beginning I knew I wanted a distorted voice over to help convey feelings of a distorted message through a telephone or an old found walkie-talkie. I recorded the voice over using Adobe Audition, and added the phone sound effect using Audition’s built in audio presets.

Due to the cyberpunk style of the final video, I knew I wanted to include a synthwave track, similar to music that can be traditionally found in Cyberpunk and Vaporwave movies such as Blade Runner and Drive. It was also important to me however, that the music would not be too loud and make the voice over hard to hear,

After four great years of studying graphic design at Iowa State University, I truly appreciate this final opporunity to create and have the freedom of choice for my final school project. In the Creation of -Topia, I utilized every bit of inspiration, critial thinking, design thinking, and skills that I was able to aquire through the different classes that I got the chance to take throughout the last four years, and I hope to continue utilizing them through all of my future endeavors.
