Ecosystems, Economics, Energy & Equity In January 2016, NOFA-NY will hold its 34th Annual Organic Farming & Gardening Conference. The theme for the conference—“Good Hard Work: Ecosystems, Economics, Energy & Equity”—honors farmers and farmworkers and the invaluable positive impact organic farming has on the world. To inspire thought and discussion, Rosalinda Guillen, executive director of Community to Community Development, will be the keynote speaker. Rosalinda is known for her efforts to build a broader base of support for rural communities and sustainable agriculture policies that ensure equity and healthy communities for farm workers. Our 2016 NOFA-NY Farmer of the Year is Kathie Arnold. She has been a co-owner and operator of Twin Oaks Dairy LLC in Truxton, NY with her family since 1980. Kathie has been a tireless advocate for organic dairy farming and a leader in her community. Each year at our conference, we strive to inspire, as well as inform, and to provide an unparalleled opportunity for networking and for reciprocal teaching and learning. NOFA-NY Farmer of the Year

Rosalinda Guillen is a widely recognized farm worker and rural justice leader. The oldest of eight she was born in Texas and spent her first decade in Coahuila, Mexico. Her family emigrated to LaConner, Washington in 1960 and she began working as a farm worker in the fields in Skagit County at the age of ten. Ms Guillen has worked within the labor movement with Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers of America and has represented farm workers in ongoing dialogues of immigration issues, labor rights, trade agreements, and strengthening the food sovereignty movement. She works to build a broader base of support for rural communities and sustainable agriculture policies that ensure equity and healthy communities for farm workers.

Kathie has been a co-owner and operator of Twin Oaks Dairy LLC in Truxton, NY, since 1980—the first 30 years in partnership with her husband, Rick, and his brother, Bob and since 2010 with son Kirk. The farm began shipping certified organic milk in 1998. Kathie has been active over the years advocating for organic dairy issues, especially the Pasture Rule. Among other advocacy endeavors, she worked against fracking in NYS and was a Cortland County Legislator for six years. She and Rick built a passive solar, earth sheltered home in the 1980s and have installed PV systems for both the home and farm.

Annual Meetings NOFA-NY, Inc and NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC Annual Meetings The annual meeting is your chance to get the latest report on our organization’s work and to weigh in on plans for the future. Help determine what issues NOFA-NY works on in the coming years and vote on 2016 policy resolutions. Only members may vote, so join NOFA-NY as a member before the meeting! New York Small Scale Food Processors Association Meeting The NYSSFPA was formed to represent and inform all small-scale food processors. The organization’s workshops educate by mentoring, teaching marketing, connecting farmers and processors for value-added production, and guiding food-entrepreneurs in the use of current approved processing practices. All scholarship recipients are required to work for an assigned shift during the conference.

ART SEED VARIETY SHOW – The Art of Seed Stewardship There’s a new way to discover new and tried-and-true vegetable, herb, and flower varieties that might be right for your farm or garden. Join Ken Greene, Doug Muller, and Erin Enouen for a guided Variety Show! See the artwork commissioned by the Hudson Valley Seed Library to celebrate exceptional varieties. Find out how the artists tell the stories behind the seeds. Learn about the farmer-breeders,

participatory breeding projects, university breeding programs, ethical organic seed companies, dedicated non-profits, and amateur seed breeders behind the seeds in the show. Amy Halloran, The New Bread Basket (Chelsea Green Publishers) Amy Halloran has been following the revival of the regional grain movement in the Northeast for several years. She writes about food and agriculture for farming newspapers, cooking websites, and regional magazines. Her involvement in local food systems began with the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market in upstate New York, which bloomed under her care to a fifty-vendor year-round marketplace with more than a thousand weekly shoppers. Amy Goldman, Heirloom Harvest (Bloomsbury Publishers) Amy Goldman is a gardener, author, artist, philanthropist, and well-known advocate for seed saving and heirloom fruits and vegetables. Amy’s first three books were each awarded an American Horticultural Society Book of the Year award: Melons for the Passionate Grower, The Compleat Squash, and The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table. Heirloom Harvest was published in October 2015. Goldman served on the Board of Directors of Seed Savers Exchange for more than ten years, half of that time as Board Chair; she now serves as a special advisor to the organization. Saturday 5:45–7pm

Peter Burke, Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening: How to Grow Nutrient Dense, Soil-Sprouted Greens in Less Than 10 Days (Chelsea Green Publishers) Peter Burke has been teaching garden classes since 2006, when he started presenting workshops on Indoor Salad Gardening, Square Foot Gardening, Extending the Garden Season, and many more. WEED SCHOOL Weeds, more than pests, reduce our yields. This workshop will review weed biology, including types, life cycles and weed-plant-environmental interactions. CHILDREN'S CONFERENCE & CHILDCARE

FRIDAY WELCOME GOOD HARD WORK Welcome! Using imagination, movement, and fun props, we will engage in the good hard work of getting to know one another, creating safe sacred space for our weekend together and begin building of our magical ecosystem. Using energetic techniques, we will also create our own individual ecological universes. Workshop begins 7:50am. Led by Sarah van Leer & Laura Morrill

WORKING WITH SKINS Using Wild Alaskan Salmon skins that Joel harvested in the summer on the beach near his home in Alaska, each of us will scrape the salmon skins, wash them, prepare them for sewing, and sew a pouch as a finished project to take home. We will work together to stretch a moose hide and create an enormous drum, which we’ll use on Saturday after it has had time to dry. Workshop ends 4:15pm.

Each year we encourage attendees to bring their children ages 6–12 to attend our Children’s Conference. Our session leaders are farmers, permaculturists, urban homesteaders, students focused on environmental and food studies, artists, musicians, and educators. As an after lunch treat, we’ll head over to the Saratoga Spa State Park for a two-hour hike. We’ll taste the mineral springs, explore the park, practice our map reading skills, and observe as we go. CHILDREN'S CONFERENCE & CHILDCARE

Pre-registration for childcare by Friday, January 15 is required Child care will be available for youth ages 3–5 and includes many activities to keep your young ones engaged and inspired. The childcare program will be led by Linda Stallard, an experienced teacher and afterschool leader at the Saratoga Waldorf Schools since 1987. Each day will include a walk outside and fun inside with crafts and activities. Children must bring warm outside clothes (boots, snow pants, jackets, hats, mittens, etc., and an extra change of clothes). No childcare services will be offered during lunch. Parents should plan to pick up their children promptly after the morning sessions end, and then again following the afternoon’s last workshop.

SUNDAY MAKING WORK EASIER Simple machines make work easier, but they can also be a lot of fun. We’ll use life size levers and fulcrums to lift heavy loads, experiment with wheels and skids, and try to find a balance of work and play. Workshop begins 7:50am. Led by John Inman & others TBA

YEAR-ROUND INDOOR GARDENING Author of the book Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening, Peter Burke will show you how to plant an indoor garden for fresh salad greens all yearround without lights or a greenhouse. Everyone will plant their own tray to take home and watch grow - ready to harvest in just 10 days. Led by Peter Burke with Deb Burke
