EDITOR'S LETTER Fall is always exciting and by far our favorite time of year. The colors are changing, the air is cooling off, and just around the corner are the holidays, which bring good food and memorable moments with our family and friends. Of course, perhaps the most exciting aspect of Fall is that we get to break out a whole new wardrobe. And if you’ve been saving a killer bottle of whiskey, now is the perfect time to crack the seal on that bad boy. This season is also very special to us at NOBLEMAN as it marks our one year anniversary.

work (you can thank us later) of finding the finest Presidential Suites throughout Orange County. We ventured across an ocean to bring you a mind-blowing look at Iceland, and hopefully we gave you some useful tips on how to buy and fit a new suit. To top it off, we included some rare spirits sure to spark your curiosity, and as expected, we lined up the cars that have us grinning, including the brand new, notyet-released, Rolls Royce Phantom. Start saving your pennies. What a time it is for NOBLEMAN. As we look back on the year, we are extremely thankful for the opportunity to have worked with such influential standouts like Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner, and Rande Gerber; all amazing men making significant impacts in their sphere of culture. It’s evident this issue is extra sentimental for us. It’s been a year of adventure, hard work, and endless creativity. We marvel at the editorial ground we've broken, and most importantly, we am honored by the amazing support of our clients and readers from around the world. We seriously can't thank you enough for your continued support. It’s been an incredible ride so far, and with that, we once again invite you to keep chasing the dream with us. It means so much that we get to share this with all of you.

In this edition, we scoured the globe in search of the absolute very best in style and substance, and along the way, we sat down with some of the most fashionable men in Southern California to gain an insight into their world of style. You’ll find them in our 2017 Men of Style feature. Speaking of stylish men, we were honored with the opportunity to enter the world of El Duderino himself, Jeff Bridges. A true artist - actor, musician, photographer - Mr. Bridges offers us knowledge, insight and an introduction into his latest project. We spotlight new culinary destinations sure to surprise and delight, give you a head start on holiday gift ideas, and we bring you inside the most luxurious hotel Rome has to offer. We even did the hard

UP FOR AUCTION PAUL NEWMAN'S GRAIL-STATUS ROLEX DAYTONA BY CAMERON BARR

On October 26th, 2017, Phillips Auction House in NYC will auction off a very special stainless steel Rolex Daytona, nicknamed the “Paul Newman.” Named after the legendary actor, it is considered one of the most desirable and coveted watches on the market. It’s hard to expect that the late actor was ever looking for an exotic and rare Rolex to don his name, but in his later years, Newman became an avid race car driver who often used the specific timepiece for its intended purpose: a chronograph to time races and lap times. The Paul Newman Rolex Daytona exhibits a unique dial that includes art-deco style fonts and multiple color details, classic characteristics that make this a stylish and timeless wonder to wear around your wrist. Fortunately for you, now is the opportunity to bid on the actual watch he owned, not that he simply lends his name to. The story behind this specific watch is simple, sincere and just as cool as the man who once wore it. Newman's wife, Joanne Woodward, gifted him the watch sometime shortly after he began auto racing, and she took the time to add a special touch to the back of the watch, engraving it with the words “ Drive Carefully... Me.” In the summer of ‘84, James Cox was dating Paul Newman’s daughter, Nell, and one afternoon as the two bonded over a summer project at the family’s home, Paul asked James what time it was, with James responding, "I don't know, I don't own a watch." Paul then handed James his Rolex and said, "Here, here’s a watch. If you remember to wind it everyday, it tells pretty good time." Mr. Cox wore the watch every day until the mid-1990s when he was informed of the relative value of a Paul Newman Rolex Daytona. Two years after Paul Newman passed away, his daughter started the Nell Newman Foundation. Cox made the heartfelt decision to offer up the watch because "If Paul were alive, and I went to him and said, 'Hey, you know that watch you gave me years ago? Turns out it's super iconic and valuable,' "I think his response would be, 'Well, what are you going to do with it, kid?’" It is estimated to sell for over $1MM, but some are expecting the watch to sell for much more. If you’re looking for a piece of both racing and Hollywood history, this is perhaps your most conspicuous option.

The Thomas Crown Affair is the highlight of McQueen’s suit game, and though the actor may have preferred his every day t-shirt and jeans, he knew how to put together a well-fitted suit. Always looking sharp in three-piece suits, McQueen opted for gray tones and blacks. He paired these with mostly blue dress shirts and ties (probably to match his piercing eyes.) Shoes were always classy: He kept it with any shade of leather or opting for black Oxfords.

ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM 8 WORDS BY JEREMY EPP

This year marks the next step in the legacy of the Rolls Royce Phantom. We are celebrating the much-anticipated release of the all-new Phantom 8 after nearly 15 years in development. This is part of what makes the iconic automotive flagship so special. When revealed this summer, it was clear that only the best comes to those who wait.

Phantom VIII revealed at the exhibit on July 27th.

50

1933

Phantom II owned by Sir Malcom Campbell, a famous Grand Prix winner and land speed record holder using a Rolls Royce engine.

1936

Phantom III named “The Butler” owned by British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery and used in WWII.

1952 In paying homage to the 92-year history of the Phantom, Rolls Royce gathered the finest examples of past generation Phantoms with rich history and flair to show off at the “The Great Eight Phantoms” exhibit at Bonhams of London. Nobleman’s own Editor-In-Chief, Doug McLaughlin, and myself received a special invite to view the Phantom I. This was a pristine 1927 model owned by the late Hollywood great Fred Astaire. It was an absolute honor to have that opportunity.

Phantom IV owned by His Highness Aga Khan III.in WWII.

1965

Each generation has become a landmark of refinement and the pinnacle of luxury automotive engineering of its time. Rolls Royce has done it again for the eighth time. It is a fantastic example of purposeful evolution. It has reintroduced true personalization and bespoke interior design options to its owners. Secondly, handling has greatly improved and there is a noticeable reduction in transmitted road noise throughout the cabin.

Psychedelic Phantom V owned by John Lennon appropriately named the Summer of Love Phantom.

1977

The new 6.75-liter V12 under its enormous bonnet now uses twin turbos to produce 563 hp and keeps engine revs and noise reduced because of it. The 8-speed transmission uses satellite intelligence to detect road changes and preloads shift data for only the smoothest undetectable shifts. The Phantom 8 also uses cameras in the windshield to detect uneven surfaces and adjust dampers accordingly. Rolls Royce calls these autonomous drive quality features “magic carpet ride”. Boundless interior options and customizations are available from leather colors, seating arrangement and starlight headliner. The most unique change to the interior is the introduction of “The Gallery”. It is a sealed glass fixture straight ahead in the dashboard that can encase a one off priceless masterpiece or an original 3D image molded and created just for your Phantom. If you can think it, it can be displayed. There will never be two Phantom 8s alike. Thankfully for us, that means we can expect each contact with a Phantom 8 to be a unique and thrilling experience.

Phantom VI limousine owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

2003

EXPENSIVE

TASTE AN INSIDE LOOK INTO THE WORLD’S HIGHEST-PRICED CHAMPAGNE BY KARA STUDZINSKI

52

W

hen childhood friends Patrick Sabaté and Stéphane Sésé set off on the adventure of concocting their very own sparkling wine, the initial conception never included them becoming the men behind the most expensive and exclusive champagne in the world. Such a reality does not happen via “bon chance,” of course. As one would expect, claiming such an achievement comes with much commitment, such as their patient practice of releasing each new cuvée no less than twelve years after the second fermentation, a steadfast standard very few industry peers are willing to match. When you couple such craftsmanship and dedication with the conspicuous fact their bottles are limited to magnums and above, unraveling the unique story that comes with each bottle of Boërl & Kroff champagne becomes much more uncomplicated. Their scintillating story begins in 1994, when Messieurs Sabaté and Sésé sat down to envision their future as oenologists. The pair had a very clear idea of the palate profile they desired to achieve, and they understood

this prolific profile would demand a complexity in its flavors and aromas unmatched in the marketplace. Leveraging what they knew best, the aspiring winemakers let their inspiration flow from their mutual affinity towards two of France’s finest wine regions, Burgundy and Bordeaux. “We were fascinated by the intensity and uniqueness that the best French red wines gave us,” remarks Sabaté. And so with a hectare-sized vineyard in the Champagne wine region of northeast France, the two Frenchmen began to cement their stature in the industry by producing the only champagne made of a single variety, with ingredients coming from their distinct terroir and produced exclusively in millésimé. In 2008, thirteen years after their first production, Sabaté and Sésé made the decision to open a few magnums with their loyal friends and the lofty reception convinced the Frenchmen to begin offering their prestigious product to a select and fortunate few. Over the years, it’s become evident that their meticulous detail is what has garnered them so many well-deserved accolades. “All remuage is done by hand, disgorgement also, and the cork is unique. But one of the main things is that we let the wine show us when it is ready, and no decision to release a vintage is taken for commercial needs, but instead only when the wine has reached the point of evolution we search for,” states Sabaté. “The vintage 1996, for example, was released almost two years before the 1995.” It also makes sense that the world’s most prestigious champagne would turn to the world-renowned sommelier, Gérard Basset, to help create a tasting profile. In profiling the vintage 2002 cuvée, of which only 700 magnums exist, Basset notes the combination of 90% pinot noir, 7% chardonnay, and 3% pinot meunier in its composition. With a complex nose offering notes of citrus fruit, candied fruit, and earl grey tea, the result is an intense champagne that exhibits a delicious chamomile aftertaste that is extremely enjoyable and full of enormous aging potential. However, with only three thousand bottles in the overall brand’s circulation, speed trumps sophistication. For the noblemen among you, a magnum (1.5L) sells for $5,300, a jerboam (3L) for $16,500, and a melchizedec (30L) for $215,000. Like any select fine art, the real story remains the craftsmanship and true character that goes into each bottle. As for the taste, well, you’ll have to experience it yourself.

BESPOKE CREATIONS CRAFTING ONE-OF-A-KIND MCLARENS WORDS BY KARA STUDZINSKI

Have you ever wanted to build your own supercar? Me too. When I finally win the lottery or invent something as cool as the avocado spoon, McLaren is who I am calling. The brand is famous for pioneering the use of carbon fibre in its vehicle production, and its introduction of the carbon chassis into racing and road cars (the 1981 McLaren MP4/1 and 1993 McLaren F1, respectively) was an unconventional choice that critics thought would never work but actually did. As if such grandeur needed an upgrade, McLaren began offering the worthy buyer a bespoke division, McLaren Special Operations (MSO), which is dedicated to taking ownership one step further. Launched in 2011, MSO traces its origins all the way back to the launch of the McLaren F1 in 1992, a time before the establishment of McLaren Automotive. Determined to offer owners of (arguably) the world’s coolest car a customer care program as unique as the F1 itself, McLaren developed a personalization service for people who desired to tailor the F1 to their exact requirements. Fast forwarding to today, MSO offers five tiers of service, allowing almost limitless possibilities for any custom creation. Buying the McLaren is merely the start of the journey these days, with the MSO experience offering a one-of-a-kind mission to make something already special into >> so much more.

54

55

Frankly, it should come as no surprise that McLaren’s fearless reputation for achieving the impossible transitions so seamlessly into bespoke creations as well. These imposing machines are thoughtfully crafted around an owner’s precise taste, with opportunities for customization options or the building of ultra-exclusive, limited-edition, one-off models. Basically, if you can dream it, McLaren can build it. Though creating a unique car can and often does take an extra amount of time - anywhere from 6-9 months to 2-3 years depending on the level of customization - the wait is well worth the result. “Challenging the art of what’s possible to meet the most demanding customer requirements, then subsequently delivering beyond that expectation, is integral to the service that McLaren Special Operations offers,” says Jolyon Nash, McLaren Automotive Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing. “MSO provides McLaren owners with virtually limitless possibilities to tailor a car exactly to their needs and taste; unique paint colors and finishes, custom leather and stitching, and exotic materials are all available within a bespoke commission. And beyond this, there are opportunities to create vehicles designed to individual specification.” We dare you to outdream their team.

HACIENDA FINDING REST IN A UNIQUE SPANISH-STYLE HOME IN SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY WORDS BY BEN CLASSEN >> PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROD FOSTER

S

outhern California residents are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and their homes certainly do the landscape justice. From coastal estates to sprawling ranches, Orange County truly showcases the best of California living. Nestled into the backside of the Coto de Caza boundaries, we found a hillside haven sure to meet the expectations of even the highest standards.

64

Designed by Denise Morrison, a well-known luxury home designer, the three story, 9,500+ square foot Modern Spanish home features 7 bedrooms, 9 full and 2 half bathrooms. Our favorite areas included the wine cellar, private gym, guest house, basketball court, and the poolside outdoor space - just to name a few. Plus, the home is nearly self-sustainable with solar panels, water well and reservoir, and a state-of-art home automation system, controlling everything from the large screen TV’s to window coverings. If that doesn’t have you sold, the 180-degree views from the viewpoint of the backyard will. Denise and her firm, Denise Morrison Interiors, specialize in luxury custom construction projects completing them through final furnishings, such as this one. All of the flooring, tile, windows, and lighting, were hand-selected and custom-designed by Denise. And the homeowners didn’t experience the average move in. Everything from the pillows to the cutlery was perfectly placed, ready for use. Consider this a custom construction home with white glove delivery like no other. In a true show of complete design and foresight, the new owners practically needed only their clothing as Denise and her team had thought of everything else. Stepping into this home, you’re immediately in awe of the grand entryway, rich with Spanish architecture and design elements. The main stairway is adorned with tiles that have been handdrawn and custom-colored by Denise, made especially for this project. “I find most of my design inspiration when traveling. Many of my projects are influenced by the architecture, colors, and cultures I find abroad. So creating each of the Spanish tiles found throughout the property was one of the most special and creative >> aspects of the project.” says Denise. 65

Off of the entry way is an impressive office, fit for any CEO. The main floor flows into a living and dining room, which incorporates sophisticated design with clean modern lines. The nearby kitchen and family room bring a new flavor, featuring bold colors with masculine elements of leather and wood. After touring the first floor, the tile and stone selections were a highlight of the home. From the antique terracotta pavers, to floor-to-ceiling bathroom mosaics, and a beautiful kitchen back splash with a massive sandstone counter, the stone selection is uniquely varied, telling a story as worldly as the home itself. Upstairs, you’ll find plenty of areas for a peaceful retreat. Each of the three children’s bedrooms have been designed especially for their interests and hobbies, featuring private baths and also a kids’ guest room. The real show stopper on the top floor is the master suite. Denise created a homeowner’s sanctuary, including a stunning foyer, comfortable sitting area around a custom fireplace, and private terrace overlooking the expansive estate. Our favorite part - the luxury master bath that features stunning white marble, detailed tile, a freestanding tub, and shower experience like no other. We’re talking lots of space, enough for a rain shower and multiple shower heads. In case anyone is looking for an even more private getaway, you can ride the elevator to the basement. This space features a custom wine cellar, expertly built into the curvature of the staircase above, and a large entertainment room with enough seating for your entire crew, even on Super Bowl Sunday. The bar is perhaps the most impressive part, with every accouterment to mix your perfect margarita.

I FIND MOST OF MY DESIGN INSPIRATION WHEN TRAVELING. MANY OF MY PROJECTS ARE INFLUENCED BY THE ARCHITECTURE, COLORS, AND CULTURES I FIND ABROAD.

66

DENISE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO ENSURE THAT THE HOME WOULD MEET OUR NEEDS AND BE A SANCTUARY FROM OUR BUSY LIVES.

And to save the best for last, the outdoor space is as luxurious as the interior, featuring half a dozen seating areas with ornate fire pits and Spanish arbors. Denise even added an outdoor bench swing, perfect for afternoon siestas, and a long communal table for wine tastings with friends. The pool and spa are trimmed with Denise’s custom tiles, making it feel more like a Spanish resort than a backyard pool. The Cabaña has an expansive outdoor kitchen and large screen TV, so you can party from indoors to out. Guests can enjoy a grand walkway along the border of the property, lined with multiple seating areas, before reaching the private sports court located just below. The combined function and form of this space, is a trademark of Denise. Having raised four sons, she affirms that she doesn’t know how to design “precious spaces.” Her homes have a decidedly chunky and masculine vibe that look beautiful, but also stand up to the demanding needs of busy families. She is well-known for her ability to infuse unbelievable design with a level of comfort any man can appreciate. The new homeowners couldn’t agree more. “We wanted the home to reflect who we are as a family. Denise worked tirelessly to ensure that the home would meet our needs and be a sanctuary from our busy lives. She not only accomplished everything she promised but exceeded our expectations and delivered a home that our family and friends will enjoy for years to come”.

A CURIOUS CASE OF THE

WHISKEYS

> A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO THE BEST SMALL BATCH SPIRITS. BY KARA STUDZINSKI

S

{

ure, we all have our favorite whiskey; that go-to dram we pour to celebrate, relax, or offer up that liquid courage. Who doesn’t love a neat Macallan 18? Well, there is life beyond the tried-and-true, so if you are ready for something new, look no further than this carefully curated guide to the best small batch bourbons and whiskeys from around the globe.

BRUICHLADDICH BLACK ART EDITION 05.1 Twenty-four years in the making, this alchemical expression houses the best of the Bruichladdich cellars and spirit with many sleepless nights involved in its creation. It takes time to decipher the full array of sensory magic on initial offering. Its antique copper color gives way to lavish notes of cherry, mango, apricot, and a warming citrus swathed in an oak blanket of soft brown sugar, vanilla and figs, all dipped in syrup. Each time you go back to the glass, different notes come to the fore as the constant evolution of flavor hints at the depth and secret complexity of this elegantly refined dram. There’s a grace with which the whiskey gently settles onto the palate, a black velvet quality that comes from the age of the secret alchemy of the spirit.

{

{ HUDSON WHISKEY BABY BOURBON The first whiskey produced in New York since Prohibition, and the state’s first bourbon ever, Hudson Whiskey is the creation of Brian Lee and the father-son team, Ralph and Gable Erenzo. Distilled in New York’s Hudson Valley, Baby Bourbon was the first release born from the brand (hence the name). With tasting notes of superbly smoky wood and mellow notes of vanilla and caramel, the bourbon is matured in small charred new American oak barrels for a smooth, clean finish. 68

WIDOW JANE BLOODY BUTCHER SINGLE EXPRESSION BOURBON Organic, farm-to-bottle, using no genetically modified corns, grains, yeasts, or enzymes, Widow Jane is distilled in Red Hook, Brooklyn. What starts with a sweet oak and graham cracker nose, is quickly transformed into something truly special. Vanilla and allspice are present at first sip, while tannic tobacco, molasses and oak round out a sharp finish.

STYLE

Uncut and unfiltered, straight from the barrel and weighing in at 136 proof, Garrison Brothers bourbon is not for the faint of heart. Their first spirit, a limited release – just 600 bottles worldwide – was one of the finest bourbons ever made. Ten of those tasting barrels were put aside, and the few precious drops of liquid remaining is what brings us this fantastic Cowboy Bourbon. The nose starts off with scents of burnt popcorn, chocolate cake, new boot leather and toasted marshmallows, with tasting notes of cherry cola, café au lait, fruitcake, black licorice, roasted walnuts and molasses.

JEFFERSON’S RESERVE GROTH CASK FINISH This one’s a truly special spirit, aged in barrels from the Groth Winery in Napa Valley, home to some of the most outstanding cabernet sauvignon’s from the region. Barrels are filled with fully matured Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey and put in a steel container that reaches up to 120 degrees to sweat the wine out of the wood. The result is a glass of cabernet followed by a shot of bourbon, married together in a supremely balanced spirit. The finish explodes with luscious dark berry flavors.

{

GARRISON BROTHERS COWBOY BOURBON

A single malt made with American barley, the Baller Whiskey is yet another perfect example of the lighthearted, adventurous spirit of the St. George distillery. A California take on the Japanese spin of Scotch whiskey, the liquid is aged in ex-bourbon and French oak barrels, and then spends time in casks seasoned with house-made Japanese plum wine. The result is a malty and grain-forward taste, crisp and dry, with a touch of sweetness. The smoky finish lingers and builds with each sip. - Photo credit: Jason Tinacci

BOOKER’S 2017-02 BLUE KNIGHTS BATCH A rare barrel-strength bourbon known for never being watered down, for some people this spirit may be too much. Bottled uncut at its natural proof, for true bourbon fans Booker’s is probably the best around. This batch is named in tribute to the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, an international brotherhood of active and retired law enforcement officers who share a passion for motorcycle riding and cruise together across the country. The nose starts off sweet with vanilla, and the finish a great mingling of different tastes, making it a well-balanced batch.

VAN BRUNT STILLHOUSE SINGLE MALT WHISKEY

KINGS COUNTY DISTILLERY SINGLE MALT WHISKEY This single malt whiskey is open-fermented off the grain from malted barley with peat sourced from England and Scotland. The liquid is twice distilled in traditional Scottish pot stills, then aged in used bourbon barrels. More potent than its palate would suggest, the spirit is dry and sophisticated. Elegant with notes of honey, hay and burnt orange peel, it’s a perfect addition to any shelf.

69

Like its Scottish cousin, this spirit is made from 100% malted barley, but the Stillhouse's uniquely American approach makes this bold and bright expression stand out from Scotch with roasted notes unlike any others you've had from across the pond. Crafted in an artisanal distillery in Brooklyn, the taste is fresh with a touch of grassy oak, hints of tobacco, clove, apricot, and finished with nutty, dark chocolate flavors.

{

{

{

The taste profile on this spirit is a bit on the sweeter side, with a hint of citrus and oak. What starts off with a creamy vanilla nose quickly transitions to hints of nuts, caramel, orange and light chocolate. Best served neat or on the rocks, the spicy aroma of dried citrus and orange peels balance the finish of vanilla, honey, and citrus with a hint of caramel.

THE BEST SUPERCAR FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN RWD SPYDER WORDS BY KARA STUDZINSKI

Commuting to Vegas from LA in a fighter jet sounds like fun, but it certainly isn’t practical, especially considering the price tag of $35 million. Since this is (probably) not on the table, allow us to open your eyes to your next best option: the supercar. A supercar will run you more than the average luxury sedan, but definitely less than the fighter jet. For more insight into this exclusive ownership club, we picked the brains of several elite automobile aficionados for what could make the best everyday supercar if you’re not a fighter pilot. After sifting through the high-octane crowd, the 2017 Lamborghini Huracán RWD Spyder is what stood out. This mid-engined machine is both thrilling and refined, exuding the state-of-the-art characteristics one desires in an high-end sportscar. Combining unmatched aesthetics and on-road experience, not to mention it’s new design epitomizing the word “cool,” the Lamborghini Huracán offers endless appeal. Its naturally aspirated V10 engine cruises with a purr, outputting 580 hp that allows you to reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. With a top speed of 198 mph, you could comfortably fit in 9 holes, enjoy a power lunch, grab your dry cleaning, and still have ample time to pick up your lady. “The rear-wheel drive Spyder enlarges the Huracán family’s core product range,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali. “It offers the lifestyle appeal of open-air motoring with the pure thrill of rear-wheel drive engineering. This is a Lamborghini for those with a passion for life and the purest driving experience on the open road. It’s also a Huracán for those entering the Lamborghini family, wanting a true Spyder experience without compromising on the performance and >> dynamic handling of a rear-wheel drive car.”

The drive is direct and precise, with a low center of gravity that responds to steering inputs and discrete changes of direction. Paddle shifters are attached to the steering column, meaning they don’t turn with the wheel. That may be a drawback as you rip into the gym at mach 7, but you won’t know until Lamborghini loans you a car for a couple weeks to test this theory out. The interior is comfortable and surprisingly spacious with a hood that conceals a small trunk perfect for an overnight bag. With heated, electric seats that warm you while you’re top-down cruising, and a 19-miles-per-gallon gas efficiency, this supercar registers as one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road. Safety is another feature addressed with pure precision. Electronic power steering is tuned specifically for the rear-wheel drive Spyder, ensuring maximum agility and control in every driving condition. STRADA for daily use, SPORT for sporty driving fun, and CORSA for maximum track-oriented performance are tuned to provide over-steering characteristics, emphasizing authentic rear-wheel drive behavior. The power management system of the rear-wheel drive includes a specific steering setup with recalibrated stability and traction controls, connecting the driver as directly as possible to the road. If you find yourself in a rush or caught in the rain, the soft-top opens and closes in just 17 seconds, but only at speeds of up to 31 mph. The Lamborghini Huracán RWD Spyder is a masterpiece that for many may come off as unpractical, but for those with comfortable confidence and unmatched flair, it offers membership into an exclusive and prestigious club showcasing a lifestyle saturated in ceaseless stares. lambonb.com 72

GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE

SUIT SHOPPING HOW TO BUY THE PERFECT FIT

BY LOUIS AFROUZNIA >> PHOTOS BY FOXES & WOLVES

SHOULDERS The most important aspect of getting fitted for a suit or off-the-rack sport coat is the shoulders. A good tailor can adjust just about anything to accommodate your physique, but avoid making changes to the shoulders. A guideline to follow is to ensure that the shoulder pad ends where your shoulder ends, with your arms relaxed at the sides. DO NOT extend your arms across your chest or up and down to determine if the suit fits. If you see a pronounced divot on the shoulder, try a smaller size, or if there is excessive bulging on the shoulder, try a bigger size. Remember, expect to make modifications when using a tailor and know that the foundation of a good fit starts with the shoulders.

THE DROP Unless you’re buying individual suit pieces, you will need to know the significance of the drop in a suit set. The drop is the reduction in the number of inches between the size of a suit jacket and the size of the trousers that accompany it. Most retailers have a standard 6-inch drop. For example, if the suit is a 40R, then the waist on the trouser would be a size 34. The average body type will fall in line with these measurements, but expect alterations for different physiques.

SIZING CHART Understanding the basic guideline to men’s sizing can make suit shopping either a seamless experience or a brutal nightmare. Follow this formula and you will feel confident in your quest for the proper fit: 34 Suit = 14.5 Dress Shirt = XS Sport Shirt 36 Suit = 15 Dress Shirt = S Sport Shirt 38 Suit = 15.5 Dress Shirt = M Sport Shirt 40 Suit = 16 Dress Shirt = L Sport Shirt 42 Suit = 16.5 Dress Shirt = XL Sport Shirt 44 Suit = 17 Dress Shirt = XXL Sport Shirt 46 Suit = 17.5 Dress Shirt = 3XL Sport Shirt Again, this is simply a guideline, but your body type and preference will take precedence.

STYLE

SLEEVE LENGTH AND TROUSER BREAK Rule of thumb for sleeve length on your suit jacket is to show ¼ in. – ½ in. of shirt cuff, and always be mindful not to have the length too long or too short. In regards to the break on your trousers, it all depends on the fit. For a more traditional trouser, feel free to have a longer break, meaning to cover the first few laces in front and ending just above the soles in the back. However, slim trousers should be shorter, with only a slight grazing of the top of your shoe, as this will avoid the dreaded bunch up. This is just a suggestion, however, as current trends have guys showing more ankle and not wearing socks with many suits.

PAIRING AND COLOR COMBINATIONS Practice makes perfect! Play around with colors and what goes well with your skin tone. Do not reject anything until you try it on, as you will often be surprised. Do not hesitate to ask questions of the brand ambassador when it comes to shirt/tie/shoe combinations. Lay the suit down on a table and bring over different shirts and ties to put under the jacket to play out your options. The key should be to have a nice flow between colors and patterns, not to match them. Know the occasion and whether you’re looking for a conservative or fashion-forward look. Although you can’t go wrong with black shoes, wearing brown shoes and a brown belt with any shade of blue or gray suiting is a dapper choice and highly recommended.

FABRIC AND CARE Invest in high quality wool for your suits, or wool/ silk and cashmere fabrics, as they form to the body better and are quite sustainable. For a casual sport coat, cotton is okay, but blends are so much better. Adding silk, linen or synthetic fabrics adds a soft hand and a luxurious element to the garment. As for care, DO NOT dry clean your suits more than twice a year unless you get an unexpected stain. The more you dry clean, the more you break down the fabric leading to a shorter life span. Take care of your suits at home by folding them nicely on a suit hanger and getting them pressed from time to time by a tailor. 78

THE STATESMAN JEFF BRIDGES IS STILL THE SILVER SCREEN COWBOY For nearly half a century, Jeff Bridges has displayed endless dedication in his delivery of one epic performance after another, firmly cementing him as a pillar in the artistic community he calls home. Such a span in an industry known for its frequent bouts of friction would seem to whittle down most men, but in Bridges’ case, it’s only made him a blade more sharpened. And while he’s certainly well-known for the many names and faces present in his prolific movie roles, many fans have come to see him less as an actor than as a source of continued creative output, from his soulful and fun music with his band, the Abiders, to his lifelong passion for photography. Yes, we have come to enjoy the fruits of his labor so much, he has become a cultural exclamation point adding much needed context and importance to this era of entertainment. Yet, as dependable as he is to his adoring audiences, Jeff Bridges is in his core a true family man with an endearing love story that justifies why he’s been married to his special lady for forty years. Somehow, when watching his films, it seems we get a glimpse into the type of grit it requires to remain in a relationship that long, an act truly worthy of applause and admiration. >>

Mr. Bridges is a man of many names, many faces, all well-known, established pillars of the creative environment. He is a blade sharpened over several decades of friction. We have enjoyed the fruits of his labor so much that he has become a cultural exclamation point that adds both context and importance. While he’s well known for his acting, he’s less known as an actor than a source for creative output. His music and photography are regularly enjoyed by us all. He is a dependable to source both for the viewing audience as well as his family. Bridges has been married since 1977. Making it that long in this era is almost miraculous. Somehow watching his films, we can get an idea of the type of gravel it takes to stick in a relationship that long. We applaud you sir. Or maybe your wife for putting up with you for that long. Certain roles have become etched in the cultural vernacular that we use them almost as a slang, a garnish on otherwise normal conversation. As The Dude, he gave us a cruise-control version of adult life and taught us what a rug can really do for a room, and the consequences of violating it. He’s remade classic western films and added more grit than we thought was possible. He’s battled Iron Man, taken us with him to alternate, digital universes, and now, joins the elite society defending Britain and all that is noble in the sequel to the Kingsman hit; Kingsman: The Golden Circle. His place on the throne of cinematic establishment is unquestioned. The latest project is a follow up. A sequel that can attract a heavy-weight like Bridges needs to have something special. Bridges is both a student and a master. He loves creating movies just like he loves watching them. After seeing the first one, and being blown away, the opportunity to be a part of the second wouldn’t be missed. However, he’s a tough customer when it comes to rating movies. “Ya know, I’m in the biz so I’m tough” says Bridges. “For me to be impressed by a movie takes a little work. The first film was executed so well that when I was invited to work on the next one I knew it would be great to play with those actors that were also in the film.” The Director, Matthew Vaughn, is known for his steadfast style and vision. However, Jeff says he is awesome to work with and collaborate with. He continues, “If you have something you think would work, he’s willing to hear that out. He wants to know what the people around him think as well. He keeps the atmosphere loose and full of joy. For me, it was ideal. Bringing joy to your work environment is important.” The character he plays, Champagne AKA Champ, is the head of “The Statesmen”, the US counterpart to the British “Kingsmen.” Champ, as his name would suggest, forgoes the bubbles of his name sake and exudes a closed fist gruff, perfect for Bridges. Bringing together the looseness of Cowboy culture, a culture his character is decidedly drafted from, and the primp and prowess of British culture, was a fun project to work with. Will we see Bridges continue in this role for a third film in the series? That question remains to be answered, but we are already hearing rumors, so here’s to hoping.

BRINGING JOY TO YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT IS IMPORTANT.

FOR ME TO BE IMPRESSED BY A MOVIE TAKES A LITTLE WORK.

LIVING WELL WITH TOM CULLEN Tom Cullen is a man of intensity, both professionally and in his desire to live well. But what does that mean, “live well”? Tom believes that facing forward with confidence, accepting life as it comes, and finding the positive in everything is paramount to living well. When he says this, it’s with a tinge of weathered experience that comes from making enough mistakes to know the difference. This discerning approach brought Tom out of a rough neighborhood in Wales, got him through school, and set him on the path as an actor. His acting career officially began at the age of 25 with a small indie film and has carried him to his most prominent role to date on Downton Abbey. The show exudes heritage and style, much like Tom. He comes from a long list of Welsh acting talent and is carrying the torch, chest out and chin up. We caught up with Tom after a shoot to discuss his own legacy, his craft, and of course his great boots.

Tom, before you were working as an actor, who is the one person that significantly impacted you in a positive way that helped make you the man you are today? I grew up in a small town and went through some really tough stuff early in my life. I tended to really act out a lot and was a bit of a problem. There was one teacher that really invested in me and gave me a little extra support and attention. It means a lot to me to have someone I respected give that to me. I’m fairly dyslexic so I had a harder time staying up on certain things and to have that support was a real game changer for my identity. The school I went to didn’t exactly encourage individuality so having that helped shaped who I am today.

I REALLY TRY TO LIVE FROM A PLACE OF GENEROSITY, BEING A STRONG SOURCE OF SUPPORT FOR THOSE AROUND ME, AND LEARNING HOW TO BE A BETTER FRIEND.

What about when it’s all said and done? At the end of your career, what do you hope to leave in the way of a legacy? Oh man, that’s such a tough question to answer. I really think we need to be present more than thinking about the future. I really try to live from a place of generosity, being a strong source of support for those around me, and learning how to be a better friend. I try to say 'yes' as much as possible. It’s so easy to say ‘no.’ I hope those are the things I’m really known for. What about fear? Is there anything you really fear? Haha! Acting is still scary! It will always be a little bit. Growing up there was a very lax attitude to achieving much of anything so I had to push through that fear of failure and everyone around me that kind of looked at what I was doing and said things like “It’s ok if you don’t get very far.” I had to push into that. But I think we are living in a new era of anti-intellectualism and that type of mentality breeds more of that negativity and fear. I think it’s pretty common and something a lot of people deal with. Yeah, that’s probably true. When you think back to that era, say when you were about 16, what advice would you give yourself if you could? Man, calm the f*ck down! I was so angry and had such a problem with authority. I would definitely tell myself to shut your mouth, chill out, and listen a lot more. I used to push so hard all the time. You’re a very stylish guy. What is one piece you couldn’t live without? I really am a fan of a good pair of shoes. I love great shoes. There are two pairs of the same boots that I’ve been wearing for years that just keep getting better with age. I have two pairs of the Wolverine 1000 Mile boots in Dark Grey and Dark Brown. I resoled the grey boots with a lower that has a little extra tread on them. I use them for hiking, walking the city, and pretty much exclusively when I travel. They’re insanely versatile boots and after three years they just look better and better. You can dress them up for a night out or head out on a trail and they handle it. I love those boots.

If

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings—nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance runYours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son! - Rudyard Kipling, 1865 - 1936

STYLE ICONS MAKING AN IMPRESSION IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BY BEN CLASSEN

>>

PHOTOGRAPHED BY FOXES & WOLVES

Orange County is often overlooked as a source of inspiration by the fashion world. Not only is it our mission to highlight and educate the style scene in Southern California, we do our best to keep our ear to the ground and listen for heavyweights. This year, we have gathered some gentlemen that are true to themselves and communicate style and substance in their own way. Each man on this list brought an heirloom piece that marks a specific point in his journey and shares why it matters to him. We are pleased to introduce the 2017 Men of Style.

When my father was sick, I was by his bedside and he asked me to go into a dresser drawer and get his watch out. He told me to put it on and said that now a piece of him will always be with me when I wear it. That was in 2003 and I have worn it almost every day since. It is a Jaeger Le Coutre which is an amazing watch, though I’m not sure what year it is from.

I spent two years designing and redesigning the Cambridge Sunglasses frame. It was a complete labor of love and something I worked really hard on. I wanted to mix the perfect blend of vintage styling with modern technology and materials. They are created from a single block of titanium, 12K Gold plating and CR39 polarized lenses. The other important piece I have is my suitcase from Globe Trotter. It’s wellbuilt and looks better the more worn it gets. I was in Japan, saw it and bought it as a gift to myself and just threw out my old suitcase and went home with it.

After I went to fashion school and had been working for awhile, I hit a benchmark that I felt was important and wanted to reward myself. It was a reminder to invest in myself as well as the brand. My watch is a Blancpain 50 Fathoms “Black Knight” edition. It’s one of 500 pieces in the world. It can be dressed up or down which I really love. The detail and construction of it are incredible.

As we were coming out of the recession my business finally started to recover, I bought my first set of custom suits. I went to Mark Pomerantz for them. Working with Mark was so interesting because his approach was that of a sculptor. He wasn’t there to make me happy, he was there to create his art, I was just the mannequin on which that art would be worn. Because of that approach, I ended up with two suits I’ll keep the rest of my life and will always look incredible.

When I graduated college my dad told me some really great advice regarding paying attention to the details in life. Part of that was not only wearing a suit that fit properly, but having a well-made tie that adds to whatever you’re wearing. I took that to heart and bought this tie from Harris and Frank and have kept this tie ever since.

ONE ROAD TO

RULE THEM ALL WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW SMITH

TRAVELING ICELAND UNDER SUMMER SKIES

S

ometimes, nothingness itself is the destination. If it wasn’t, then 2.3 million people (in 2017 alone) wouldn’t be heading to a prehistoric island, home to more sheep than humans.

Perhaps the sudden drop in airfare on flights through WOW Air, with a main hub here, is driving part of the interest. Founded just 6 years ago, the airline has positioned themselves as the “gateway” to Europe – just do a layover in Iceland first. The change has sent tourism numbers skyrocketing. But for many, Iceland is the final destination, and it was ours, too. From LAX, the smooth but lengthy flight sauntered north past Nova Scotia, continuing across frigid waters. After stretching my legs a bit, I arrived back to my seat and as I sat down, my wife, Rachel, said, “I think I can see something out there.” Right then, with a soft ding from the pilot, we heard, “If you’re on the left side of the plane, you might be able to see the Aurora”. I don’t remember ever grabbing my camera so fast. What looked like an atmospheric haze to my eyes was showing something I’d only dreamed of on my camera screen. The plane wing looked as if it was cutting through a paint stroke of neon green in the stratosphere. I wondered if my trip had already peaked. Nevertheless, I wanted to see the aurora unassisted by technology, plainly with my own eyes. Arriving in Reykjavik by sunrise, the feeling of being “in Europe” was immediate and satisfying. Cobblestone roads, quaint shops the size of a bedroom, and extra-wide license plates are adorned on car models that will never see the light of day stateside. Without more than a smidge of determination, walking from end to end of the city was a pleasure available to everybody. With two cups of incredible pour-over coffee buzzing in our stomachs, we had covered half the city in a day. It was impossible to overlook American accents pouring out of every restaurant and cafe. A blind person would swear that they were in Milwaukee before pinpointing Reykjavik or any European city for that matter. What was making the middle-aged Minnesotan couple leave the comfort of their suburban life and venture just outside of the arctic circle? They surely weren’t dying to learn about Björk’s heritage... And though the smoked puffin or local craft beers would have been enough to keep me personally pacified, >> Reykjavik was not the reason I came either. We were all transients.

...THE RING ROAD PROMISED JOURNEYING INTO ANOTHER WORLD ENTIRELY.

Determined to maximize the experience, we had our sights set. The Ring Road is Iceland’s circular, two-lane equivalent of Pacific Coast Highway that begged to be conquered. In just 828 miles, the entire country was going to be checked off the list, jetting inland or outward as distinct landmarks approached. If you found yourself an appropriate, topless, sports car, the long summer daylight would be perfect for circumnavigation. But unlike PCH, the Ring Road promised journeying into another world entirely.

was convinced there had to be a misunderstanding. How could hundreds of colossal, moss-covered peaks, shrouded in mist from four separate waterfalls not demand a picture? Where was the “Scenic Area” road signs or pinpoints on Google Maps? Everything was blank. How did every damn house have its own personal waterfall? These no-name spectacles in the distance were on a grander scale than most monuments championed by countries around the world. There was no information center, entrance ticket or brochure. Whatever I saw was immediately eclipsed after the next bend in the road.

Of the millions of tourists that arrived in Iceland, it felt as if 99% of them instantly disappeared when we left the Golden Circle, a 300 km tour path that, at times, looked more like a movie set than the primal exhale of a volcanic island. Mere hours into the journey, we began to traverse straight into scenes of creation in its rawest form. No amount of Instagram posts prepared us to see these sights. My sense of scale was all wrong.

The crowds thinned the further we drove and the waterfalls, glaciers and crags became more incredible. Beginning with a walk behind Seljalandfoss (foss means “waterfall” in Icelandic), the cascading drop showered us with mist and a deafening roar. Just a bit further, the canyons of fjaðrárgljúfur were impossible to pronounce, but incomprehensibly beautiful. The earth had violently split, but the remaining panorama birthed vast primordial life, flowing with glacial melt and embellished in a yellowish green. Each cliff begged to be peered down from, replacing the mist on my palms with >> sweat. Everything in my life was insignificant in those moments.

Shooting while steering typically nets bad results as a photographer or a driver, but staying in the lines became optional quickly. Spraying and praying, I banked on at least one shot being good as the shutter went rapid-fire. You see, the novelty hadn’t come close to wearing off yet. I

And I didn’t get my significance back. After the sun had set, we pulled into a dirt parking lot in Jökulsárlón to rest. The brake lights illuminated the edge of the dirt where a descent into rushing water waited below. It was pitch black but it was not quiet. Eerie groans and arose from the distance, sounds unlike anything I had ever heard. When the sun arose, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Mammoth fragments of deep turquoise ice were floating downstream toward the ocean. The meters-thick, translucent ice was a color and opacity that I didn’t have the ability to recognize. I had never felt like Earth was alive until that moment, wondering how there could be so many calved pieces of ice at that size simply floating by me. A 60-second drive toward the ocean revealed a beach littered with chunks of ice being tossed around by the waves. Pitch black, volcanic sand contrasted with the bright blue ice. The color of Rachel’s skin touching the ice that had washed ashore was a rare moment of connection. We were small, yet we somehow felt like stewards of the world. As we pressed further around the Ring Road, a push notification that a 7.66 kp rated solar wind storm was going to blow over the northern region of the country – exactly where we were. Observing every possible factor, we decided that 3 hours away at the 180º arcing waterfall, Goðafoss, there was the best chance of viewing the solar storm without cloud cover. Upon arrival, my jaw hit the floor. The raw power of Goðafoss was overwhelming, yet it was equally composed in the landscape. Repeatedly, the photos did no justice as we felt the things we were seeing. I laid on the rocky cliffs, hoping to absorb some form of energy from it. We waited for the sun to dip below the horizon.

WE WERE SMALL, YET... STEWARDS OF THE WORLD 112

TRAVEL

Then it began. A subtle glimmer of neon appeared in the sky and the only thing we had truly hoped to see during the expedition was emerging in the heavens. Rushing across the wet rocky edge to set up the camera, the adrenaline of watching my bucket list materialize could’ve ended poorly. But fortunately, as the sky lit up in every direction, I could do nothing but stand in awe. As the aurora ripped through the sky at 430 km/h, the thundering torrent of water fell silent in my head. There were no words, and there was no photo I could take that would match our experience. It was something we had to encounter right then, and then alone. Over an hour later, the lights began to fade, and so did I. My every emotion was drained. As we continued through Iceland’s neverending terrain, we felt the freedom to forge our own path. Enjoying each moment, we couldn’t stop for long. There were places yet to see, and if an opportunity arose, we simply pulled over to take it. We didn’t have somewhere to be, nothingness was the destination. And after each drive or hike, we never remembered how long it took to get there. There was nothing physical to take away from Iceland. Aside from the bulging hard drive of photos and video, no tourist trinket or gift accurately represented the real Iceland. We were lost in a pursuit of memories, not memorabilia. Being immersed in complete absence of humans and in prehistoric landscapes that towered in every direction, it reminded us to not let our lives just be a habit. We couldn’t simply trust the screen. We had to see it for ourselves. We have to seek, always.

THE REOPENING OF ROME'S

GARDEN OF EDEN BY BEN CLASSEN

RENEWING HISTORY AND HERITAGE IN THE HEART OF ROME

A

s the age-old adage goes: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Luckily for us, after 3,000 years in the making, it is a city that is enriched with cultural foundations that are still well-presented and have influenced so much of the modern world. And if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in this mecca of sophistication, we’ve rediscovered a place that is sure to suit any palate. At Hotel Eden, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a patchwork of little Italian luxuries that make for a delightful destination. Whether a firsttime visitor or frequent guest, the freshly re-opened Hotel Eden is as luxurious as you could hope for and as extravagant as you could desire.

to create the most luxurious hotel in Europe, and it appears as if they are approaching a near hit of that goal. If you wanted to experience each of the hotels fine amenities, you would realistically need a month. The views alone, especially from the penthouse or rooftop restaurant, allow you to experience the beauty of the city without the hike. Visiting Rome usually requires an enormous amount of walking, so this is a perfect break for your barking dogs. When you step out into the cobblestone streets, here are some tips aside from wearing quality shoes. A short one kilometer walk away is the Villa Medici, a Cardinal's villa that dates back to the 16th century and is lush with landscaped gardens. Tours are offered and temporary exhibitions are frequent. An even shorter 600 meters away are the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna, a historic landmark built between 1723 and 1725. And to round out your local trifecta, visit the elaborate Trinità dei Monti for a lesson in history and a glimpse at one of the most exquisite interiors in Italy.

To know Hotel Eden, a little history and context helps. Located in the very center of the Old City of Rome, the original building dates back to 1889. It has a strong ifthese-walls-could-talk vibe and has hosted its fair share of royalty, dignitaries and celebrities alike. The hotel was renovated with strong ties to historical aesthetics while making fantastic updates that create a very comfortable, but uniquely Roman, experience. Considering the relatively short renovation process (only 17 months total), the updates were focused on creating living spaces to make you feel at home in the most intimate of manners. Now replete with a redesigned rooftop restaurant (one of three dining options), a new spa, and sweeping city views, the property more than delivers on its promise of total luxury. It’s obvious they aimed

A stay at Hotel Eden won’t just put you at the center of Italian luxury – it will propel you into the world of fine dining and breathtaking architecture. Rome beckoned you to its steps with a reputable history and undeniable allure, but you’re going to stay because of Hotel Eden. Our guess is after your stay, you’ll be coming back soon.

GOOD AS GOLD A SITDOWN WITH ADAM BARATTA, CO-FOUNDER OF ADVANTAGE GOLD, THE COMPANY THAT PUTS THEIR GOLD WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS.

Today’s investors have never had more to cheer about. Not only are equity markets at all time highs, but with interest rates at the lowest they’ve ever been, the bond markets are also trading at historic alltime highs. The stock market is up roughly 7% on the year at the time of this writing. And yet something else has happened under the surface that many may not have noticed. While it may look like a “risk on” environment if you were focused on the markets all-time highs, there is a massive movement of capital flowing into safe haven assets. Over $13 trillion has flowed into bonds around the globe that pay a negative interest rate. Gold has risen roughly $300 in six months, and silver has increased 46% in that same period of time. Which brings us to Advantage Gold, the fastest growing Gold Company in the country. Advantage Gold in 2014, it’s first year in business had gold sales of roughly $2 million. Since that time they have grown into one of the strongest players in the gold industry, with annual sales for 2016 on pace to be roughly $100 million. This is the kind of growth that catches the attention of us here at NOBLEMAN. We sat down with the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Advantage Gold, Adam Baratta to discuss his company’s meteoric growth, their company’s philosophy and where we can expect gold to go from here.

Adam, congratulations on your success. Can you share with us how you have managed to build so quickly? Thank you. I appreciate the compliment and I think the answer is fairly simple. There are over 10,000 gold dealers in the country and yet we are unique to almost all of them in that we set out to do one thing and do it better than anyone else. We only work with investors. We specialize in the IRA Rollover which means that we are working with retirement portfolios where the typical account size will be anywhere from $50,000 to as much as $5,000,0000 - not $500-$5000 that is the average account size in the industry. This really gives us a competitive advantage because we are able to keep our margins lower than the industry standard because our account sizes are so much larger. Additionally we have an unmatched IRA Department in-house that handles all of the processing and paperwork for our investors. I think this has been the primary reason for our success. On top of that as most of our business comes from referrals from guys like Jim Rickards and our other clients. This allows us to keep our overhead much lower than the national companies that spend several million dollars monthly in advertising. So it’s your business model that has allowed for that growth? To a large degree yes, I think so. The other factor is that we have some of the smartest and most educated consultants in the business really educating our clients in ways that I believe are lacking in the industry. Tell us about your Company Philosophy? I think if you put your clients needs first, everything else will take care of itself. We really believe in what we do and that makes this a really fun and exciting place to be because we know we are helping people. I think our clients really appreciate that service and treatment.

"GOLD HAS OUTPERFORMED THE MARKETS FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS" What does this have to do with gold? Everything actually. You see our equity markets have become boom and bust markets. This began in 2000 when the Dot-Com “bust” took place and equity markets dropped 47%, gold spiked from $250 to $650 in the next four years. We had another equity market meltdown upon hitting new all-time highs by October 2007 this one called the Housing Bubble, only to see 58% of the market value washed away in a very short period of time. Interestingly gold would go from $700 to $1924 just three and a half years later. Well here we are again with both equity and bond markets at all-time highs and silently while they are up roughly 5-7% on the year, gold and silver are in a bull market and up 24% and 46% respectively. And yet they are still significantly undervalued in our opinion. We fully expect that gold will more than double from these levels in the next four to five years, especially as our paper markets have the pullback that so many wise investors and money managers around the world are predicting. So why gold now? Because gold is undervalued and everything else in our opinion is significantly overvalued.

You were just awarded the Best Of Trustlink Award for 2016. Tell me a little about that. This is really cool. Trustlink was founded by the Better Business Bureau in 2009 to be a place for real and authenticated reviews. What’s awesome is that we were contacted by Trustlink organically, without even knowing that we had received a 100% five star rating and were awarded the Best of Trustlink 2016. There is no better compliment we can receive than 100% satisfied clients. Well gold is certainly hot right now and your clients must be happy and you must be busier than ever. We are, yet I am not sure how much of that has to do with the recent uptick in gold. Gold has outperformed the markets for the last 15 years, but yes the recent increase certainly has shed more light on why gold and why now. Okay you got me, why gold and why now? It’s funny, a highly unusual thing happened on August 11, 2016. The S&P 500, The Dow and the NASDAQ all closed at all-time highs on the same day. How unusual is this you may ask? Not since December 31st, 1999 have all three indexes closed at all time highs on the same day. Talk about Y2K! While our computers didn’t all crash at the same time back in the year 2000, it wasn’t long before our equity markets soon did. Only three months later in March the Dot-Com bubble popped and the results were ugly. The Dow and S&P 500 would lose nearly 50% in a matter of months and take over 7 years to get back to even. The NASDAQ fared even worse dropping by 77% and wouldn’t be back to even for roughly 15 years until June of 2015.

So are you saying put all of your money in gold? Well let me answer that by telling you what we have done personally. My partners and I have put every penny of our company pension plan into physical metals. We are the only company in the country that has done this to my knowledge. And it was not easy to do believe me. It took nearly 9 months and great expense to even find a pension plan that would allow for us to do that. On top of that, every investable dollar I have above and beyond my retirement account I am also putting into physical metals and I continue to buy more gold and silver each and every month. Well that is literally putting your money where your mouth is. It is, yes. And if you want to know the secret to our success, it is just that I would say. We are all deeply committed here and that commitment coupled with outstanding service is hard to beat I guess.

NEW RULES FOR A NEW SEASON

> WORDS BY JOSH BOYD

>>

As we usher in a new season of fall festivities whilst the dog days of summer fade into the sunset, one constant remains: at one point or another, everyone hits a plateau in their fitness journey. The routines and habits that helped reveal your summer six-pack are beginning to slow, forcing your body and lifestyle to make the necessary adjustments that will keep you on that path towards achieving a higher level of fitness. With easy changes to your nutrition and workout regimens, getting back on track is simple. Here are some plateau-busting tips to help you reach those next level results.

>>

MODEL TYLER MOUNCE

TRY A DIFFERENT WORKOUT ROUTINE

Nutrition is a large part of the fat loss equation, although exercise plays a critical role. It's not uncommon for your strength training progress to stagnate while eating fewer calories. It's imperative that you maintain your muscle mass as you lose weight, or else the weight you lose will be valuable muscle. If you find that you aren't making strength progress anymore, yet your nutrition is spot on, try changing up your workout routine. It might be all that you needed to get over that hump.

TIME YOUR CARB INTAKE

Carbohydrate intake and timing can make or break your weight loss. A common denominator for success is when people tailor the intake of their carbs to around the times when their insulin sensitivity is highest. That is typically around your first meal of the day, and the meals before or after your workout. Sometimes just shuffling your current carb intake to those times give you the needed boost.

LOG YOUR FOOD

It's a tedious process, but a valuable one. Are your calories too high, or too low? What about your macronutrient breakdown? How do you know if you aren’t tracking them? Maybe you aren't getting the protein requirements that your body needs, but if you don’t have the data, how can you analyze it and make changes? While you can get away with guesstimating, there is no substitute for tracking your food.

CARBOHYDRATE CYCLING

For people that are carbohydrate sensitive, this tip can work wonders. During carbohydrate cycling you can still eat as many carbohydrates as you usually do, but instead, you mix up low carb and med/high carb days. Pair those high carb days with intense workout days, and use the low carb days for your non-workout days.

INCREASE YOUR CALORIES

To drop weight, lowering calories is part of the plan. But, how low should you really go? Your metabolism slows down as you lose weight, so give your body a break and try increasing your calories to maintenance levels for a week. You'll find that once you return to a hypo-caloric environment, your weight loss progress will pick back up.

BE PATIENT

That’s right. Even the most tolerable people become impatient when it comes to weight loss. If it's only been a week, or even a month, and your results still aren’t what you expected, it’s time to check your expectations. Losing weight is a longterm process, not a short-term event, just as getting fit is not a destination, but rather a way of life. If you're eating right consistently, and exercising several times a week, the body fat will come off. It's important to understand this right now. If body fat reduction is your primary goal, the key performance indicators discussed above will offer much more value than a few, simple numbers on a scale.

MANUAL

GENTLEMEN'S GUIDE TO

BUYING LINGERIE S

ome say beauty is skin deep, but when it’s draped directly on a woman’s skin in the form of a racy and lacy piece of fabric, it’s bound to spike your senses just at the sight of it. Lingerie is a lot like a first kiss; it’s easy to get it wrong, but when executed correctly, the opportunities are endless. We asked a true legend of lingerie, Jordana Woodland, to give us some tips on purchasing that special piece that seeks to maximize any occasion in which it is involved. As the visionary behind her very own brand, Naked Princess, Jordana is the go-to consultant when it comes to deciding on dainty clasps and pouty pieces of silk designed to thrill.

1. 2. 3.

DON’T BUY CHEAP Don’t skimp on quality when it comes to lingerie! Cheap lingerie doesn’t have the same fit or feel. Give her something special that is going to last her for years to come.

ASKING FOR HELP When in doubt, ask her best friend. There’s nothing like a woman’s perspective. She’ll be able to give you expert direction on what styles your special lady will love.

FINDING THE RIGHT SIZE If it’s a surprise, take a look at a few of her bras that you know she currently wears (you know which ones!) to ascertain her correct size. If you want to make it more of an experience, I think there’s something special about going lingerie shopping together. Take her to a store and let her get fit by a professional and shop for the perfect piece together.

4. 5. 6. 130

IF IN DOUBT, THINK SOPHISTICATED She’s a sophisticated woman. She deserves lingerie that celebrates and honors that.

KEEP THE RECEIPT You want your partner to absolutely love her lingerie so let her know that you have no problem giving her a receipt to find her ideal style and/or fit. After all, the better she feels in it, the more she'll wear it!

KNOWING HER PREFERENCE You want her to feel confident and sexy in her new lingerie, so be sure to select styles that you know she prefers. Although you may want to try something spicy and new, your main focus is making her feel special so let her personal tastes be your guide.

SMART STRATEGIES FOR THE NOBLEMAN BY BART ZANDBERGEN CFP >> PHOTO BY FRANK SALAS

A

s we head into a new season with an eye towards the end of the year, the savvy gentleman begins to make moves to make sure he comes out on top. Positioning in the market is everything, and diversification is key. Having spent more than 25 years navigating and advising entrepreneurs, executives, and investors across the globe, I’ve curated a list of suggestions that every nobleman should be apprised of. Much like investing in yourself, whether that includes your health or your wardrobe, it all begins with a smart plan to bring your annual goals to a strong finish. Consider these 5 things as we close in on the end of 2017:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

GIFTING: Has 2017 been an extremely profitable year? Consider charitable donations, a noble option in the midst of a busy philanthropic season. When giving back pays you back, it’s truly a win-win you can’t overlook. HARVESTING: As in Tax Loss Harvesting. Is it time to clear out the current crop and make room for new seeds that will take root and flourish? Perhaps it’s time to consider selling appreciated securities or other gainful assets, especially before year-end. FUNDING: Guilty of ignoring your retirement account? Make sure you are taking full advantage of contribution options to your 401k between now and the end of the year. Noble entrepreneurs and executives never forget to plan for the future, as it is always closer than you think. UPGRADING: If you are anticipating your tax rate to increase in the future, it may be time to learn more about a Roth conversion. The distinct tax benefits and advantages may make for a smart move as you transition into a new bracket financially. SHOPPING: The holiday season may incite a shopping frenzy for many of us across the globe, however, beware of an impulse buy involving mutual funds in December. The timing of payouts can have a distinct effect on your taxation, so before you pull the trigger on these purchases, make sure to consult with your wealth manager or financial advisor. Understanding the dynamic intricacies involved with these commodities can make a stark difference and result between a shopping success versus a buyer’s remorse.
