We always have to fight that extra mile in Whale Cove.

It's not like other communities. We've had this boil-water advisory for four years in a row now. The territorial government wants to get that water plant fixed up.

If Whale Cove was a bigger centre like Arviat or Rankin Inlet it would've been dealt with, done, finished. There's a bit of money we use from the hamlet to be able to get ice from the lake and deliver it to the community, because that ice water is so much better than tap water.

That's how hard these smaller communities have to fight with our own territorial government. In fact, I've heard people in the Nunavut Legislative Assembly say that small communities aren't viable in the North. I've heard that. And I've told the premier that if they ever say that again, I'm suing our own government.

It stresses out people. They'll never pay us enough money to move anymore. We've gotten to love this place.

I was born in Churchill.

My family was moved here to Whale Cove back in 1964 from Garry Lake. From what I know, there was starvation in Garry Lake, so my family went to Baker and then from Baker they were moved – from inland to the coast.

I started my education here in Whale Cove. At the

time, it went from beginners to Grade 9 in our school system.

Three of my parents' daughters were just taken from them and brought to school in Chesterfield Inlet. When I was on my Grade 9, I told my parents that the teacher was confident I was going to finish my school here now and go to high school in Iqaluit or Yellowknife. First thing they said to me was, "You're not going." That's when I just dropped out of school right there. I guess they knew something.

I ran for council back in '92 and I got in. There were people that were pushing me to go in.

I was 22, maybe? It was like going back to school.

I have been mayor twice, from 1997 to 2002 and from 2012 until 2019. When you don't have the diploma of a Grade 12, you tend to work harder to get what that Grade 12 person has. I wanted to learn more and I knew I could help the community at the time. When you understand English and Inuktitut, that's a big help.

In the region, there are a lot of graduates now without

any jobs. I've always been supporting mining, even though I want my land the way it is, without being touched. Young people have to be busy.

Not just young, even the older people, if they're not busy doing work, they're going to hunt caribou and sell it, because it's money.

We were always taught when we were harvesting fish or caribou to get only what you need. When we were kids, hunters would share all the time. Today, they're getting more than what they need and more to sell. Once in a while, you listen to the radio and hear, "I want to buy this part of a caribou," which is sad. I'm not used to it.

I hope in 20 years' time Whale Cove will have its own member in Nunavut's legislative assembly and a lot more infrastructure for kids.

It's never anything to brag about, but many say Whale Cove has the least suicides in Nunavut. That's because we're a tight-knit community and we still help each other. And we still make sure our young people are active.

Agnico Eagle launches public consultation Rankin Inlet Agnico Eagle will be launching a fresh round of public consultations for its proposed pipeline to carry saline water from the mine to the ocean on Aug. 20.

In July the Nunavut Impact Review Board put the company's plans on hold in a written statement due to a lack of information and public consultation.

Agnico Eagle's current application requests permission to install two 16-inch, 34-kilometre-long pipes to Melvin Bay. It estimates the pipelines would discharge between 6,000 cubic metres and 12,000 cubic metres per day – the equivalent of 150 to 300 trucks per day – between May and October.

The fresh round of public consultations will take place in Rankin Inlet's community hall over the course of three sessions on Aug. 20.

The time slots are from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Annual Calm Air tournament returning to Rankin Rankin Inlet The annual Calm Air softball tournament will be returning to Rankin Inlet at the end of the month. The organizers are hoping to get teams from around the Kivalliq region to participate.

The tournament will run from Aug. 26 to 30. Each team must field a roster of six men and four women with a maximum of 14 players per roster. Players must be at least 16 years old. The registration fee is $500 per team.

The tournament has traditionally been a qualifier to play at the Canadian Softball National Championships.

However the 2020 tournament has been cancelled due to Covid-19.

The deadline to register is Aug. 21.

Society hosted food bank in Baker Lake Baker Lake The Abluqta Society hosted a food bank on Aug. 12. Food was handed out to the majority of those in need at the society's building. Baker Lake volunteer firefighters helped out by hand-delivering food to the elders in the community. Funding for the drive was provided by Agnico Eagle, which was also responsible for volunteers.

Anyone willing to help volunteer in future food bank events should contact the society.

"A reminder that volunteers are the life blood of our non-profit society and without their awesome work, our food bank would not be possible," the society said in a statement.

On-the-land programs being held Nunavut The Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council will be hosting two unique on-the-land programs at the end of the month.

The first will be a berry-picking program taking place Aug. 24 to 28. In the course students will learn how to bake with berries, preserve berries and make jam.

The second course, which will run from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, will focus on whale hunting. This module will teach students basic boat safety, how to harvest whales and how to prepare and preserve whale meat.

Both programs are for youth aged 13 to 19. They will feature three days of after-school activities and two days on the land.

The registration deadline is Aug. 20.

Weekend of competitive games started off as way for community's up-and-coming U-16 team to train

The future of baseball in Rankin Inlet looks bright after the community wrapped up its first ever fast pitch tournament earlier this month.

The game has been growing in popularity ever since Holly Mercer and her partner Robert Kabvitok started up a youth team a few years ago.

The team, which is planning on travelling to Yellowknife for a tournament this year, wanted to get some practice before leaving.

That's when they approached Connor Faulkner to see if he could put together a men's team for them to play an exhibition tournament against.

Faulkner reached out to his friend Sidney Nichol to organize a team. After speaking with David Clark, it was suggested they try and organize a men's tournament to see if there was any interest.

"We thought it would be best to draft a format where everyone over the age of 14 could put their name in and be guaranteed a spot on a team," said Faulkner.

In the end there were

enough players to draft three teams, in addition to the U-16 team, which entered on its own.

"Robert Kabvitok asked if they could enter a team for their own personal development. We ended up allowing them to do that," said Faulkner.

The tournament featured a round robin style play followed by two semi-finals.

Nichol said the competition was tight throughout the weekend.

"Every game had excitement and not every game was a blowout.

"There were guys who didn't even know they can play and they ended up begin really good," he said.

By the end of the round robin, the Royals were in first place, followed by the U-16 team, The Stealers, then the Yankees in third, with the Bad News Bears in fourth.

In the semi-finals the Royals, who were undefeated in round robin play, ended up besting the Bad News Bears.

"At one point in the game it could have gone either way but the Royals ran away with it in the end," said Nichol.

The other semi, featur-

ing the U-16 team against the Yankees, ended up being the most exciting game of the weekend. Nichol said the game was intense from the start and it continued to heat up as it went on.

"The intensity in that game was insane," said Nichol, who played for the Royals.

"We didn't expect that with a bunch of 16-year-olds."

The game remained close through the first few innings but then things started to get heated. One player from the U-16 team ended up getting tossed from the game by umpire Dave Wiseman.

"The emotions were so high that I think the kids burnt out," said Nichol.

Both Nichol and Faulkner credited Wiseman for making some tough calls and dealing with some intense situations over the weekend.

"Players didn't always agree with the calls he made.

He took crap all weekend. He got heckled a lot but he stood his ground," said Faulkner.

"Kudos to him because it wasn't easy."

The Stealers ended up dropping the bronze medal game to the Bad News Bears after their loss.

In the final, the first-seeded Royals put on a pitching clinic against the Yankees.

It was another tight game to start.

The Yankees managed to score a few runs in the first inning but Lee Kreelak's pitching kept them off the score sheet for most of the game.

The Royals' Wendel Kaludjak hit a home run midway through the game that brought three people home.

In the end the team ran away with the game and ended up winning 13-3.

"We just couldn't keep up with the pitching they had," said Nichol. "We didn't expect someone to come in with that amount of skill."

Not only was the tournament a success on the field, it also drew large crowds despite cold foggy weather on the final day.

Nichol said the organizers hope to run the tournament again next year. Ideally they would like to open it up to the rest of the Kivalliq region and invite teams from other communities.

"It looks like this is going to be an annual event," said Nichol.

Nunavut Parks has been hosting a series of Learn To events geared towards teaching participants about traditional activities this summer.

So far some of the workshops provided have included how to make pipsi, how to make dry meat and a qulliq making event.

All of the learn to events have been hosted at the Elder's Cabin just outside of town.

There are still a few more left on the schedule.

They are: • Aug. 18 and Aug. 20 Learn to prepare seal skin This session will teach participants the fundamental techniques on how to clean seal skins.

It's incredible what people can achieve when they try and realize their dreams.

Last week I had the chance to interview Arviat's Daniel Alagalak, who recently started the carpentry business Arviat Off-Grid General Contractors with his best friend Samuel Karetak.

Going into business with friends and family can come with unique challenges, but it can also have huge benefits if things work out.

Alagalak and Karetak not only share the same passion for carpentry, they also share a vision: to be able to build affordable housing for Arviatmiut.

Like many working people, when Covid-19 shut down the territory earlier, Daniel Alagalak found himself without a job.

Alagalak has been working as a carpenter for Arviat's local housing association ever since he completed his apprenticeship a few years back.

Then one day, a local woman asked if he and his friend Samuel Karetak could build her a qamutik box. After they finished it and posted pictures on social media, they got a request for another.

"A few days later, somebody wanted the same thing. So we built another qamutik box," he said.

It was at that point that the two best friends realized there was a demand for their skills.

"This was when the coronavirus just started happening. We were off work so we had a lot of time for ourselves. So we decided to start up a business," said Alagalak.

Alagalak and Karetak officially registered Arviat Off-Grid General Contractors with the hamlet a few months ago.

"The paperwork is confusing.

But we're getting there, it's all trial an error," he said.

Since they started the company the two have been involved with home renovations, repairs and building small appliances like picnic tables and gun racks. So far

Daniel Alagalak and his business partner Samuel Karetak recently started their own carpentry business, Arviat OffGrid General Contractors, in Arviat. they have completed between 15 and 20 projects.

Alagalak said the feedback from clients has been extremely positive.

"We take pride in what we do," he said. "Not to brag – we do the best we can with what we do – but the customers are really happy and

satisfied with what we do."

Alagalak said they experimented with making furniture but they found out it wasn't cost effective.

"It just takes too much time and money to build," he said.

While the two carpenters are

"We've been getting a lot of help from him so we're thankful for that," said Alagalak.

Now that Alagalak is back to work for the housing association, the business has had to become a part-time endeavour, but their hope is that one day the business will be successful enough to support the two of them.

"In a few years I'd really like to jump in and get our business running full time," he said.

Next summer the company plans on building cabins for Arviat's residents.

"Our dream for our business is to build affordable homes," he said.

Alagalak would also like to use the business as a platform for suicide prevention by teaming up with local youth who want to learn new skills. He said they plan on approaching KIA and the local hamlet for funding.

"We're hoping to hire some youth so they can get some handson training in craft work and carpentry," he said.
