1 MULTI-STORY HOUSING

precast concrete

LOCATION: Brookings, SD USER: Collegiate Students + Faculty CLIENT: South Dakota State University SQFT: 75,000 sqft CONSTRAINTS: Students are to develop a multi-story housing unit for South Dakota State University students and faculty. Should aim to incorporate 65 2-bedroom units (may vary if alternate unit type is used), 130 parking spaces, including 6 handicapped, and considerations for site and user. Structure will consist of precast concrete systems with guidance from Gage Brothers.

CONCEPT: The goal of this project was to create a positive pedestrian experience with forms that relate to the monumentality of campus as well as to the welcoming nature of surrounding homes, while preserving all existing trees. This was done by examining the following: Current and possible traffic patterns of the site, for ease of access; Average height of surrounding structures, for relatable scaling; Common forms of neighborhood buildings, to replicate comfortable geometries and space types; Existing trees, to create natural green spaces. The following images and drawings are taken from the mid-point of the project.

2 ART MUSEUM

aper ture study

LOCATION: Sioux Falls, SD USER: Community + Tourists CLIENT: City of Sioux Falls SQFT: 36,000 sqft CONSTRAINTS: In gallery spaces, the primary surface for manipulation and architectural adaption is the ceiling plain. This project explores the use of day lighting galleries through a ceiling aperture, allowing art to be viewed in the most accurately representative, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring the paintings and artifacts are not damaged by harmful rays. The museum is to be based around a single aperture model which serves as a gallery space. Public spaces, such as a cafe, classrooms, and an auditorium must also be included.

CONCEPT: This proposal focuses on extending the downtown experience through welcoming pedestrians to utilize the buildings main level and outdoor areas as public gathering space. The primary aperture features an extruded “toaster aperture and aims to create a sense of transcendence by distributing an evenly diffused light over the leaning vertical plains of the ceiling. These tilted surfaces not only help to further filter and direct the light towards the artwork, but also give a false sense of perspective to the source of light. Art possesses a similar tendency to transcend ones immediate reality and perceptions, provoking viewers to search for underlying purpose, meaning, or truth. Therefore the aperture aids in creating an atmosphere which reflects and enriches the artwork without distracting from the subject.

3 EMI INTERNSHIP

ind i a

LOCATION: Rural India FIRM: Engineering Ministries International PROJECT TYPOLOGIES: Residential + Community DESCRIPTION: During the fall of 2017, I joined EMI for a four month architectural internship, exposing me to alternative methods of construction, thought, and communication within the Indian culture. Through this experience, I worked alongside a nationally diverse team of architects and engineers to provide site zoning, residential plans, and community spaces to our clients. As an intern, my duties included schematic and conceptual designs, project documentation and presentations both visual and verbal. A majority of my time was devoted to a residential portion of a rural hospital campus. This hospital serves the surrounding farming communities, providing affordable healthcare to the poor. They asked EMI to develop solutions for their current housing, electrical, and water needs. The architectural team presented four typologies of housing units based on the needs of the doctors, nurses, administrative staff and maintenance staff. Passive lighting and cooling, available material, common construction methods, culturally appropriateness, and local architecture were taken into consideration to create comfortable and affordable housing for the future staff. This section features conceptual designs for the doctors’ quarters, located separately from the other staff, taking advantage of view beyond the boundary wall, and providing each family with comfortable indoor and outdoor space.

5 TRAVEL STUDY

scandinavia

LOCATION: Denmark, Sweden, Norway DURATION: 2 weeks

DESCRIPTION: While visiting the countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, students were required to keep journals reflecting on scheduled tours and individaul explorations. 1 to 2 written and sketched journal entries were taken daily, while digital pictures were more frequent and documented topically. These examples portray my personal reflection of the trip through writing, sketching and photographs.

SKILLS + FOCUS: Photography Sketching Documnetation ____ International Travel

“People in this area (or at least our tour guide) seem to be very attached to the past/ tradition when it comes to architecture. At one point during the tour, our guide mentioned a few new buildings that are starting to pop up around the city, calling them ugly. I expected to see strict brutalist structures with seemingly no visible inspiration after she mentioned this. As she pointed out one of the buildings she previously referred to I was a bit confused. The unique structure was intriguing and seemed as through it would draw many people in. I agreed with her that the historical buildings have importance, and stories of our culture are beautiful, yet the structures being created today also meet needs of people in a beautiful way. This particular guides’ reaction and attitude toward the change made me reflect on certain aspects in design and creative fields, or those areas completely unrelated, that I have prejudice toward. Forming opinions on subjects/ objects is how we then formulate thoughts ideas and choices, yet putting our preferences above curiosity and humility can limit our ability to appreciate and experience the beauty of the unknown and unusual.”

“The artipelag museum housed a large collection of Andy Warhol’s works. The interiors were utilized in a way to maximize daylight, yet not expose light sensitive works (paintings etc.) to the rays. The building itself was an experience apart from the exhibits... The interiors consisted of concrete walls and floors, yet the incorporation of multiple textures, raw materials, and vast exterior views made the space felt welcoming and expressed beauty through the selected elements. The large expanse of the entry contrasted the surrounding lower ceilings, which created a more human scale. From the inside, and by walking upon the roof, one could gaze at the miles of evergreen forests and the nearby body of water. Boardwalks led from outdoor entertaining and dining space through the woods to the waters edge. The location was stunning, and the museum could have housed a variety of events or collections.
