There is a serious need for officials and volunteers in our sport of athletics to run our events, whether they be open races, league matches or area / national championships. Many of our events, be it Northern Masters, England Athletics Masters (Inter-Area matches) or BMAF national championships, run the serious risk of having to be called off or at worst are undertaken with dangerously under-manned levels of officials. British Masters AF have pledged to fund courses to bring in new officials and volunteers. Whether you are currently competing and fancy a day off and helping out, or are injured or retired from competition, officiating or volunteering can be a great way to stay involved in the sport you loved. The

new England Athletics website has an excellent section on the courses available. Contact Alex Rowe, Dave Flitcroft, Jason Newell or Helen Whitby for further information. THANKS!

Chatter from the chair May I wish you all a belated Happy New Year. I hope you enjoyed the Festive season and managed to keep your training up. It is always difficult to gauge how much you can relax and how much you need to do to keep your fitness up. It was good to see so many of our members taking part in the Cross Country Championships at Winslow in February. Considering how windy and wet it was, there were almost 50 runners who turned up to brave the conditions. It was so wet that the Ambulance got bogged down on the grass as it was leaving the course and had to be towed out. A big THANK YOU goes to all those responsible for putting on the event, those who assisted on the day and the ambulance crew without whom the event could not be run. The AGM was held after the Championships and the committee was elected on block. This may be due to the fact that you are all happy with what the committee is doing or that you don’t want to be involved. While all the main positions have been filled there are some vacancies on the committee. I always feel that we should have athletes from all disciplines to give us their views and keep us up to date how they feel we are organising events. We should also have runners on the committee from all parts of Northern Masters who can bring local knowledge to our meetings. Have a think and if interested or would like to know more get in touch with Helen Harrington, your secretary. Unfortunately we made a loss last financial year and it was proposed at the AGM that your subscriptions will be going up. We spend quite a lot of money on producing and sending you the club magazine. Do you know that you can receive the mag online. This will cut down the cost of how much we spend on the mag. and may help to keep subsequent sub. rises to a lower amount. So have a think and if you are happy to receive the online copy let Jason Newell, your social media committee member know. Keep the training going and keep clear of injuries and illness. The best piece of advice I received was “ If your nose is running faster than you can then you shouldn’t be, so rest and get better.” Philip Lee NMAC Chair

OBITUARIES NEVILLE JONES 09/12/1936—19/12/2018 It is with great sadness and regret Warrington Athletic Club reports the passing of the irreplaceable Neville Jones aged 82. He was found collapsed after falling at his home. This was on the morning of our last Walton Gardens cross-country race (8/12/18) .The club was a massive part of Neville’s life . He never married, he devoted his whole life into mentoring athletes at his beloved track, in the words of Nick Jones, fellow member, Neville was a “true WAC hero”. Whatever the weather Neville would make it to the track on his bike or more recently by bus every Monday Wednesday and Thursday. It was clear to all that his heart was with the club, and as a result, there was much love and respect for him. As a coach he had much success with his young athletes. Everyone saw that Neville was the corner stone of Warrington Athletic club, he was part of the club for 56 years,-- he was a legend.

JIM RHODES It was sad to hear of the demise of Jim Rhodes at the age of 78. Jim a member n.m.a.c. had organised one of our monthly runs for many years. He was a prolific charity fund raiser for St Ann’s Hospice in Little Hulton. Jim joined Radcliffe.A.C at the age of 11years old. Radcliffe A.C. chairman Chris Paxton said “the term legend is often over used; however in this instance, I can think of no other description”. Years ago when not running, Jim was a keen boxer and darts player and in 1969 competed in major tournaments. He will be a sad loss to many of his running pals.

The club has been asked by a few athletes, for club records to be published for all multi eventers. Can I ask all athletes who compete to pass on their PB's in all multi events both outdoor and indoor. Once compiled it will be put on the club website and via our social media. below is just a small last that have been found to get the list started. please send your details to membership@northern masters.co.uk where it will be picked up

British and Irish Masters Cross Country International selection 2019 EAMA would like to apologise to all those runners who applied for selection in 2018 in the belief that a strong performance in the Inter Area Cross Country would lead to them being picked for the team. I am afraid that the click on article at the side of the EAMA Cross Country page was incorrect and should not have been there. It was part of a discussion document that was never agreed on. The first line should have had “In the future added at the beginning which would have totally changed the meaning. This was missed out by the person who put the info onto the website. EAMA can only apologise to those who were mislead by this article into believing they were automatically guaranteed selection. It was very difficult selecting the teams in 2018 due to the fact that not many runners raced against each other. Even in the BMAF events which we use as a guide, in some age groups there were only 2 runners who had competed in them and they were not even in the same race. EAMA therefore had to look at race times in other events which was not satisfactory as the courses and conditions were very varied. In order to try and get more competition between the runners EAMA are going to put more emphasis on targeted races in 2019. Competing well in the BMAF Cross Country, 5K and 10K races will have greater importance than local races. You will need to do at least 2 out of the 3 events which will give you a better ranking in your age group. The Cross Country is in Belfast on March 9th, the 10K is at Blyth, Northumberland on 7th April and the 5K is, as always, in Horwich on June 16th. EAMA are aware that all these races may mean a great deal of travelling and expense for you, especially as two of the events are in the north, which maybe a problem if you live in the South. The races are also early in the season and form may dip as the season continues. To try and alleviate these difficulties EAMA are also going to nominate races in the North and South of the country which are later in the season for you to compete in. This will give EAMA a more up to date form guide and also mean that those of you, who may not have been able to enter some of the BMAF events, an opportunity to compete. EAMA would still have difficulty in selection if you only did the south or north nominated race as you may not have raced against anyone from another region which is why the BMAF events are still a necessity. Many runners quoted the Performance Guide/ Power of Ten in their applications but it is only a performance guide if you have performed against other applicants on the same date and course. This is what EAMA would like you to do in 2019. Look out on your Area/EAMA web site for the races that have been targeted for the selection process. Philip Lee EAMA Cross Country secretary

Northern Masters Half Marathon Championships 2019

After a freezing inaugural race in 2018 it was nice to see conditions a little more favourable this year at the Four Villages Half Marathon which was again to host the NMAC half marathon Championships. The overall winner's both came from Vale Royal AC with Stuart Doyle (M45) finishing in 1:14:19 finishing as overall men's winner and Elizabeth Renondeau (V35) in 1:22:18 winning the ladies competition. All category winners are listed below but a special mention should go to Jim Rowland who finished in 1:44:56 winning the V70 category in a new PB. Helsby Running Club have been extremely welcoming of Northern Masters and the 2020 Half Marathon Championships will again be incorporated into this event. New for 2020 we are hoping to secure and additional sponsor and all category winners will also receive a small prize in addition to their medals. We look forward to welcoming all members to this fabulous event.

NORTHERN MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 9th FEBRUARY 2019 KNIGHTS LEISURE CENTRE WINSFORD

What a wonderful day for a cross country run, sun and clear blue skies, forget about the strong wind. The course was mainly flat with a couple of small inclines and a few mud patches thrown in, but that’s cross country. There was a good turn out with a wide spread of different clubs attending. In the 5k race Sarah Murphy W40 was a runaway winner in a time of 21.23 in fact the first three were ladies. The first man was Eric Ranicar M70 in a time of 27.40. There was a very tight leading bunch in the 8k race, the first 5 covered a time of 29.46 to 30.54. The winner was Philip Tedd M40 in a time of 29.46.

CRO Ingleborough Challenge Fancy a great day out in the Yorkshire Dales? The CRO Ingleborough Challenge lets trail runners of all abilities enjoy the Three Peaks area of the Dales, while providing vital support to CRO, the local mountain and cave rescue team. The 2019 Challenge takes place on Saturday May 18, 2019. Participants can choose to run either a 12 mile or a marathon circuit. Both routes explore the area around Ingleborough, the second highest of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks. The routes pass through spectacular limestone countryside, and the marathon circuit goes over the summit of Ingleborough. The circuits are well-signed, with marshals at key checkpoints to assist participants with routefinding. The Challenge is put on by the Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO), the mountain and cave rescue team that covers the Three Peaks and the surrounding area. Since 1935, the allvolunteer team has assisted thousands of lost or injured walkers, runners, cavers, and climbers, responding to up to 100 incidents annually. As former CRO Chair Pam Hickin explained: “We’re increasingly busy and, like other mountain rescue teams, we rely on public support to cover our operating costs. The CRO Ingleborough Challenge is a major fundraiser that helps us provide a vital service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We’re very grateful to all of the runners and walkers that help us by participating.” Participants can enter at www.cro.org.uk/challenge, where full information on the Challenge can be found. Team member and event organiser Phil Nuttall advised: “This is an increasingly popular event, with more people signing up every year. We’d encourage anyone who’d like to enter to sign up as soon as possible.”
