Chat from the Chair
was driving down the road one wet Sunday morning and observed a runner out for their morning effort. I was rather surprised that someone was out on such a day. But then again in this part of the country this weather is the norm. Having done all my competitive ( or non competitive running) in East Anglia which has a drier and warmer climate, wet runs were a rare occurrence. So I had great admiration for what the runner was doing. However when you think that last year the sun was cracking the flags for all of summer and this year it has been one deluge after another you can never get bored with the weather. Helen Harrington, our secretary, has stepped down from the post. Although I had only known her for a short time I have great admiration for all the hard work that she did on behalf of NMAC, the committee and you, the members. Not content with all this work she also still kept running and raising a young family. She will be greatly missed. Thank you Helen for all effort they are much appreciated. Naturally NMAC will be looking for a new secretary so if any of you are interested in the position please contact a committee member to find out more. I spent another interesting time at the 10K track race and was allowed to change the lap board and ring the bell. We had 21 runners all of all ages competing. The winner, see results in mag, was running so strongly that within a couple of laps he was already lapping other runners and the list grew with every lap. This made it very complicated as the rest of the field had to be informed on which lap they were on. Some were 1, some were 5, some 8 laps behind which made it difficult to keep them up to date. When it came to the bell it was even more confusing. One runner got the bell but it was meant for another runner who was overtaking them. They set off at a faster pace only to be told as they sprinted up the home straight that they still had 1 lap to go. They don’t have this trouble at the World Athletics. The Inter Club Cross Country event took place at the end of September. Thank you to all our members who went down to Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk to compete on behalf of NMAC. It was probably a round trip of 500 miles for some of the runners. We had a lot of success in the individual age groups. Sara Avery was 3rd in the W50, Sue Cordingley won the W60 race and Mick Casey was first M70 in the 6K event. For the 8K event, Andrew Grant was first M45, James Scott-Buccleugh headed the M40age group while Kevin Newman was the first M60 home. Anthony O’Brien was runner up in M45 age group and Simon Wright came third in the M55 category. With such a strong showing you would have thought that NMAC would have been successful but as results are based on age grading and you need at least 10 runners in each race distance it is rather in favour of the local clubs who do not have so far to travel. So we are looking to promote this event in the NMAC area next year. If anyone would like to promote the race, at a suitable venue, on behalf of NMAC in 2020 please let us know.

EAMA Inter Area Cross Country Challenge Several of our runners made the long trip down to Bury St. Edmunds for the IACCC in September. As the race was part of the England selection process for the International the field had quite a few runners hoping for selection. NMAC did well individually but unfortunately did not have enough runners in the Women’s event to qualify for the team award. Name Sarah Avery Sue Cordingley Mick Casey Phil Brennnan Andrew Grant James Scott-Buccleugh Anthony O’Brien Paul Fauset Simon Wright Mark Bryant Colin Bishop David Norman Kevin Newman Steven Doxey
Category W50 W60 M70 M75 M45 M40 M45 M45 M55 M45 M55 M55 M60 M55

Age Graded results are worked out according to your actual age rather than your age group. To have an AGR above 80% is very good. Andrew Grant was the first runner home in the 8K race. NMAC are looking to put on the event in 2020. Hopefully this will mean a stronger and larger representative from our area which will give us a better chance to win the trophy. It may be held in April so please look on the BMAF/EAMA website for details as the next magazine may be out too late to publish the details.
British and Irish Masters Cross Country International 2019
ith the event being held in the NW it was obvious that there would be many runners from NMAC applying for selection, 44 in all. 28 of them either managed to be selected in the team or as reserves, so well done to all who were successful.
The event was held on Saturday 16th November with the race being held at Aintree Racecourse and the evening reception and medal presentation in the stunning Floral Hall in Southport. NMAC runners did well and 8 of them won individual medals in their age groups. Kirsty Longley was one of the most successful, as not only did she win her age group W40 but was also first home in her race. Sue Cordingley, W60, Mick Case M70, and Matthew Barnes M40 also won their age groups. Bob Atkinson, M60 won a silver medal and there were bronze medals for Elizabeth Renondeau, W40, Andrew Grant, M45, and Dorothy Kesterton, W65. In the team competition representing England the W40 team which won the gold medal included Kirsty Longley, Elizabeth Renondeau and Louise Rudd 6. The M40 team won the silver medal with Matthew Barnes, Mike Burrett 9 and James Scott-Buccleuch 21 all part of the team. The M45 team were also first with Andrew Grant, Anthony O’Brien 4 and Stuart Doyle from NMAC. Sarah Avery 12 was part of the winning W50 team and Stephen Watmough 6 and Simon Wright 5 made up the winning M55 team. In the 60 -64 teams, Sue Cordingley and Bob Atkinson and Paul Muller 7 were part of the gold medal team. Dorothy Kesterton was in the silver medal winning W65 team and Stan Owen 6 was part of the gold winning M65 team while Mick Casey got a gold team medal to go with his M70 individual bronze medal. Also representing England in the 35 age groups but not gaining a medal were Rachel Fairclough 13, Debra Campbell 16 and Lisa Gawthorne 17 and in the men’s team Raymond Edgar 8 and Paul Coon 23. I apologise to any NMAC runners who competed for other countries and whom I have missed out of this report. Please send me your details and I will include them next time. Phil Lee
WE NEED A SECRETARY A.S.A.P. Helen has done valiant work for a number of years but has had to resign, so we need a replacement as soon as possible.
The job of the secretary is to :1.Take minutes 2.Prepare an Agenda with dates of the next meeting, and send, with a copy of the previous meetings minutes, to committee members. 3. Deal with correspondence and pass on to the committee. Plenty of help and guidance will be given to the person taking on the work.
Any volunteers please contact Phil Lee the Chairman.
NMAC Online The last few years have seen great changes in our online activity and presence. We have massively increased the activity in our Facebook Group (NMAC) which now has over 600 members! Our Twitter account has 339 followers including many of you wonderful members, local clubs, event organisers and a rather worrying account called “BorisPie”…….. Don’t mention either “B” word……. It also gives you the option to NOT receive this paper copy and get all the news much earlier. 2020 British and Irish Masters Cross Country International It is proposed that in 2020 the selection of the England team will be based on a one off selection race. This race will be held in a central place, probably Derby around about October 10th. More accurate details will be available once it is finalised.I would think that a certain number of team places, depending on team numbers, will be decided at the selection race. The rest of the team will be selected from runners who have submitted selection forms.decide to gamble all on a good selection race performance or cover all eventualities by also filling in a selection form. This could give the selectors an idea of how well you have performed on National Level. You may need some back up in case you do not do well in the trial race. The BMAF 5K at Horwich is always a good race for those who run 6K in the International and it is a local race so not too much travelling.
2020 EAMA Inter Area Cross Country Challenge NMAC are working hard to bring this event to your region. However because of the selection race it has been moved from the September date it has been held on for the last 4 years.NMAC are looking to hold it at either Wavertree Park in Liverpool or Leverhulme Park in Bolton. A possible date of April 26 has been suggested. If NMAC are unable to hold the event it will then be include in the BMAF CC Championships on March in North Wales. If you are interested in running in the EAMA event or in seeking selection for England please check on the BMAF/EAMA website for up to date information as your next magazine may not be out in time to give you details of the EAMA event. 5K ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS, 16thNOVEMBER 2019 he second running of the NMAC 5k Road Champs at the University of Leeds Brownlee Cycle Circuit saw a massive leap in entries, from 26 in it’s inaugural year to 76 this year .In the end the usual round of seasonal illness and age-induced injuries saw the field reduced to 57 but what a great time was had by those who attended. It was a wet day, the race numbers disintegrated and the officials had to grab people to identify themselves as they crossed the line but everyone seemed to enjoy it.We did have an issue with confusion over the start time but apart from one this was all dealt with and the event went ahead without a hitch .As I read out the results I could not help but be impressed by the performances of some of our athletes, the results in some age categories were nothing short of spectacular! The main thing that got me though was that every single athlete stayed for the presentation, making it a fantastic celebration of Masters Athletics and just a great advert for our sport and club! It was simply a great place to be! We had people travel from Kendal, Sheffield, Selby and Liverpool over to Leeds, and a small number even travelled early to join me at Woodhouse Moor parkrun for my 250th before taking up station as Run Director for this event! I can honestly say I cannot remember enjoying an event so much. Thank you all for your kind words afterwards – hopefully next year will be even bigger and better!!! next page for results Pictures of the event are available through our Facebook Page.

s a former Physics teacher Eddie has always been keen on sport. In his early years he played volley ball and did some sprinting. After rupturing his Achilles tendon and damaging his knees (split medial meniscus) on one, and a posterior horn tear in the other. He spent a long period focusing on rehabilitation, doing squats and non weight bearing knee exercises. He then started his field athletics as a Master Athlete. He took up the high jump in his 50s and shotput in his 60s. In the 2018 National Championships he won the over 70s High Jump and Shot Put, this is the first time this has happened. At present he has retired from both work and athletics, but hopes to return in his 75year in the shot put.
