New Life News Nurturing spiritual growth, and serving our community to glorify God

Pastor’s Corner “When We Speak of Faith, What Do We Mean?” Faith is a very common word in the marketplace of society. The word lives in many of the conversations that we hear. If you ever stop to notice how often the word “faith” is used in every day vocabulary it can be surprising. We may hear such sentences as: “I have total faith in her” or “I have no faith in him whatsoever.” The word even crops up when it comes to speaking about our economy. I recall years ago there was even a famous song by the singer George Michael titled “Faith.” Our church hymnal is filled with songs about faith. We find faith is a word that is on the lips of both churchgoers and non-church goers. It seems whether one is in the church or outside the church it seems that faith is a part of life. It appears to be a key attribute we need in order for us to function. But what do we mean when we speak of faith? Faith is one of those words that can mean many things. Here are what some great thinkers have had to say about faith: “Faith is not belief. Belief is passive. Faith is active.” Edith Hamilton “Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.” Mary McLeod Bethune “I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I’ve been closer to Him for that reason.” Elie Wiesel “If you desire faith, then you have faith enough.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Apostle Paul This month we want to explore that elusive word called “faith.” We will discuss the importance of this word using the writings of Scripture, other literature and what life experience teaches us. We will ask many questions such as: “What difference does faith make in our lives? ”What place does doubt have in a discussion about faith?” “How can we have faith when we have so many questions that we feel are unanswered about life?” “What place does faith hold when it comes to having a relationship with God?” As we go through this discussion I hope you will attempt to answer the question: “What role does faith play in your own life?” It is the hope of this month’s focus on faith that it will assist us in reflecting upon our own faith journey and its impact on our everyday lives.

Curiosity Two guys are walking through the woods and come across a big deep hole. "Wow...that looks deep." "Sure does... toss a few pebbles in there and see how deep it is."... no noise. "WOW. That is REALLY deep... here, throw one of these great big rocks down there. Those should make some noise." They pick up a couple football-sized rocks and toss them into the hole and wait‌nothing. They look at each other in amazement. One gets a determined look on his face and says, "Hey...over here in the weeds, there's a railroad tie. Help me carry it over here. When we toss it in, it's GOTTA make some noise." The two men drag the heavy tie over to the hole and heave it in. Not a sound comes from the hole. Suddenly, out of the nearby woods, a sheep appears, running like the wind. It rushes toward the two men, and then right past them, running as fast as it's legs will carry it. Suddenly it leaps in the air and into the hole. The two men are astonished with what they've just seen... Then, out of the woods comes a farmer who spots the men. He ambles over and says: “Hey you guys seen my sheep out here? You bet we did! Craziest thing I ever seen! It came running like crazy and just jumped into this hole! Nah, says the farmer, that couldn't have been my sheep. My sheep was chained to a railroad tie. -Anonymous
