THE OSCAR FOR BEST PICTURE WAS NOT FOR LA LA LAND! La la land won several Oscars, for Best Actress or Best Director among others, but they certainly did not win the Oscar for Best Movie
Scene from La la land.
BY MARINA VALLEJO
FEBRUARY 27, 2017
La la land was mistakenly announced the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, but after a few minutes of celebration they clarified that the real winner for the best movie was Moonlight. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were about to announce the winner of the Oscar for Best Movie. Warren had been given the envelope that contained the supposed card saying the winner right before he went on stage. He opened the envelope and he took such a long look at it. Faye, which was standing next to him, said what she saw on that paper: “La la land.
The whole cast, the director and writer Damien Chazelle, and the music producers started congratulating each other on stage. Some of them even talked in front of the whole audience thanking people for the help they received. A few minutes later, it was announced that there had been a mistake. “Wait, I’m sorry, no, there has been a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won the Best Picture. This is not a joke, I am afraid they read the wrong thing.” said one of the members of the cast after being told the truth.
Warren shows that the real winner was Moonlight.
The paper that Warren and Faye had in front of them when declaring the winner was the envelope for Best Actress, not for Best Picture. The winner for Best Actress was, in fact, Emma Stone from La la land, and that is why they said La la land. This leads to think that the paper for Best Actress was doubled. Despite of this incident, La la land won 6 Oscars from the 14 nominations, on the category of Production Design, Cinematography, Best Original Score, Song Director and Best Lead Actress.
RAP MUSIC BAND CALLED N.W.A STIRS UP HIP HOP Straight Outta Compton came out in 2015, and it is directed by F. Gray Gray. The main actors are Keith Stanfield, Aldis Hodge, Jason Mitchell and Paul Giamatti. It is a movie produced by two of its main characters wanting to share their history as members of a gangsta rap music band called N.W.A, that stands for Niggz Wit Attitudes.
Front cover of the movie Straight Outta Compton.
This film talks about how a group of six friends, mainly Eazy-E (Eric Lynn), Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson) and Dr.Dre (Andre Romelle), that were on the top of the iceberg with their gangster rap music during the mid and late 80s but then internal fights because of money and betrayal made the group disbanding as the ex- members wanted to still success after that.
FILM DETAILS Title of the film: Straight Outta Compton Year: 2015 Nationality: American Cast: Keith Stanfield, Aldis Hodge, Jason Mitchell, Paul Giamatti, Alexandra Shipp, Keith Powers, Orlando Brown and Corey Hawkins. Direction: F. Gary Gray Cert 15 Genre: Drama Duration: 147 minutes
One of the positive things of this movie is that thanks to the lyrics the band wrote, we can see how the black society in the United States felt when the racial violence struck the country back. In one of their most popular songs called F*ck Da Police they say: “F*ck the police coming straight from the underground, a young n*gga got it bad cause I'm brown. And not the other color so police think they have the authority to kill a minority.
The 5 main characters for the movie Straight Outta Compton.
Actually, that is one of the main objectives N.W.A had when writing their songs. Although the life of a musician is quite dramatic, the film has some unnecessary scenes that could be deleted. In these scenes, there are so many clichĂŠs that are quite hard to think they happened in real life.
Ice Cube acting in the movie Straight Outta Compton.
Anyways, Straight Outta Compton drives you back to the rap scene in the United States at the 80s, bringing you back the vibe of the music of the band N.W.A. A movie that every music geek must watch.

WANT TO KNOW WHAT DOES A MUSIC SUPERVISOR DO? In this issue, we are interviewing a music supervisor called Marina Vallejo. She has been working as it for 10 years, and we want to share her knowledge and experience with you. MARINA VALLEJO
Eric Ruiz interviews Marina Vallejo in the office of the magazine, on the 13th of February.
Eric: Welcome Marina. So, what does your job exactly consist of? Marina: Being a Music Supervisor (MS) consists of combining music with media, and supervising all the aspects related to audio, advertising, films… I’m the person that proposes songs to a director. Eric: Would you say that you need to have a certain experience on something in particular to be a MS? Marina: Yes, You have to have a very extended knowledge of music, but also you have to know a lot about negotiation and licensing agreements. Eric: How so? Could you please be more specific? Marina: Well, because you are the person that has to contact a singer that has a song, and you have to ask for his permission to use it on a film maybe, basically you are the one arranging the copyrights. Eric: What would be the process of a Music Supervisor when getting involved with a movie? Marina: First of all, the director hires you to help him with music, and then he tells you about his point of view, and he gives you the script. And once you have read it you have to advise him on what you think the perfect music would be, and then you have to find that music. It can be either a soundtrack, or certain songs. Eric: Could you explain something curious that has ever happened to you while working? Marina: Yes, a few years ago, a really famous film producer contacted me, he wanted a special sound for a particular scene in the movie and he couldn’t find anything. So, he gave me two days to find the perfect song and I finally ended up composing a new song for the scene. He loved it! Eric: Thank you so much for sharing you knowledge with us Marina.
TRUE LIFE STORIES
PIANIST SURVIVES THE HOLOCAUST
Szpilman plays the piano for Wilm Hosenfeld.
Wladyslaw Szpilman was a Polish pianist of Jewish origin. In the 1939 he was working as a pianist for the local radio in Warsaw, right before the Second World War started. One day, he was playing a piece of Chopin on the radio when there was a Nazi attack in the building. He lost his job, but his family told him that the War would finish soon, and that made him feel safe. Months passed by, and he realized that conditions for Jewish people were gettingworse. The family was forced to move to the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw. He managed to take a job as the pianist at the ghetto’s restaurant. The SS were having violent attacks when marching into all the houses still with Jewish people. Some months later, the Jewish were finally deported to the concentration camps of Treblinka. A police guard, an old friend of Wladyslaw’s family, saved him from going there. After losing his family, he was hidden in different houses by some of his not Jew friends for a while. He was just trying to survive. He hid near the ghetto for a long time, wishing not to be found by the SS. From where he was, he could see the beating ups, the fires, the abuses… A year went by, and he was still hiding. He was ill, and he was about to die because he had no food.
One day he found a can of pickles in a collapsed house, but he has nothing to open it with. A German guard called Wilm Hosenfeld found him looking for a tool to open the can. WIlm immediately knew he was Jewish. As he told him he was a pianist, he brought him in front of a piano and he made him play something. Hosenfeld was moved by the piece, and he helped him survive, not just allowing him to continue hiding in the attic, but also giving him good. "Wladyslaw: I don't know how to thank you. Wilm: Thank God, not me. He wants us to survive." Well, that's what we have to believe. In 1945 the war finished, and he managed to survived the Holocaust. To survive the Holocaust, you have to be lucky. Being a pianist made him go through the horrendous experience.

Also, the fireworks and the stage display was quite impressive, it caused a great impression between the audience. The use of drones or the fall of the singer from the top of the stadium were things that we have never seen in any show before. “It was an astonishing show, I loved it” said a girl that was interviewed right after the concert.

Losha plays the violin in 1944, Smolensky
He was afraid about the situation that he had to face as doctors were really important during the war. When he finished the daily job, he always went to the war hospital where he worked. He came every night to play the violin in front of the people that were injured. People appreciated it because he played music to relax them. He tried to combine his job with music, because he thought he would help the mental health of his patients. Most of the people who survived had mental problems before the war and Losha wanted to help them. Music made the patients think about happy memories during the childhood. "I just remember that he would make my day when he played music" said a survivor from the war. The night of the 13th of November in 1943 was a tragedy. Nazis bombed the hospital where Losha was working. Nobody survived, and when the soviet soldiers went to check if someone survived, they just found the corpse of Losha holding the violin in his right hand. Losha never surrendered to achieve his goal, he kept working hard after the tragedy that killed him, but most of the people who he saved are still a life nowadays, and his symphony will never be forgotten.
TIPS TO BECOME THE BEST MUSIC PRODUCER EVER! In this section, we are interviewing a music producer called Ángel YASUS Jiménez. He has just released his newest album, and we are going to ask him some questions about it.
Eric Meseguer interviews Ángel YASUS in the office of the magazine, on the 17th of February.
Eric: Ángel, can you tell us your thoughts on your new album? Ángel: I’m really proud of this, I mean, I’ve been working for so long to be happy with all the songs that are on the album. I think people will really like it. Eric: Do you think this one will achieve more sales than the other? Ángel: Definately, I’ve partnered with a new record label that will distribute the copies to more stores than before so I hope there’ll be more people who will buy it. Eric: Talking about partnering, I’ve heard one of your songs is going to appear in the next Tarantino’s movie. Is that true? Ángel: Yes! Even though it’s going to be a movie set on the late eighties, he will use one of my tracks. Eric: Could you explain us what the movie is about? Ángel: I’m afraid I can’t. He told me not to do that by the moment. You know, would you say anything about the movie if someone like him had told you not say anything about it? Eric: Not at all. So here concludes our interview. Thanks for everything Ángel. Ángel: The pleasure is mine. Eric: And for our readers, don’t miss reading the interviews of next month’s magazine, we might surprise you. There are very cool things happening in the next few months!
