Welcome to Abu Dhabi and IPLOCA’s 48th Annual Convention The IPLOCA Convention is a unique forum for Regular Members, Associate Members and guests of IPLOCA to gather together in a relaxed and culturally stimulating setting. During the five days of the convention, colleagues representing the great variety of companies that make up our industry are able to network, socialise and be informed of the latest developments in a series of technical presentations, business meetings, tours and social events. Delegates from pipeline construction companies, contractors and suppliers representing more than 40 countries will be with us in Abu Dhabi for the Open General Meetings on Thursday and Friday of convention week. Our speakers will tackle topics focusing on the business perspectives of onshore and offshore pipelines, training, new technologies, safety and the environment and you will also learn about new projects and accomplishments in our industry. More information will be posted at www.iploca.com as soon as final details are confirmed.

Message from the President This year’s convention will find us for the first time ever in Abu Dhabi, where we will enjoy the exceptional facilities of The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, which just opened in spring 2013. This promises to be an event unlike any other, and a distinct change of geographical location for many of our attendees. The high temperatures normally experienced in September in this region caused us to re-think our timing for this year; you will note that the event takes place in October, when things are starting to cool off just a little. Along with some lively and informative industry presentations during our business sessions, we promise you some memorable tours and social events including a day trip to Dubai, a visit to the Yas Marina Formula 1 race circuit and Ferrari World. On Wednesday afternoon, a very special event is offered to all attendees by CCC and NPCC: a true Arabian Adventure with camels, tents, sand surfing and many more desert delights.

2

Our regular sponsors have again demonstrated their generous support of the IPLOCA Convention but plenty of opportunities remain for others. We are very grateful to all our sponsors who make it possible for us to produce an event that is so well recognised throughout the industry. For our delegates the benefits of this event are many, and it always sells out early! Registration will open on 1 June 2014, so register as soon as you can if you wish to ensure your choice of accommodation and tours. Warm regards,

Najib Khoury IPLOCA President 2013-2014

Abu Dhabi Not that many years ago, Abu Dhabi was little more than a beautiful, empty desert sparsely inhabited by nomadic tribes, with a sprinkling of villages huddled around the more fertile oases. The economy was dependent on pearl diving, fishing and date palm cultivation. Abu Dhabi, means “Father of the Gazelle” in Arabic. Tradition has it that the original small settlement was founded by a nomadic tribe, the Bani Yas, that followed a young antelope to an island where they found a supply of fresh water. They settled on the island, building the ruling Sheikh’s fort, a few coral stone buildings and some 300 basasti (palm) huts. The discovery of oil in 1958 brought radical change to the emirate and its population. Oil and gas revenue was wisely invested and led to a complete turnaround in Abu Dhabi’s fortunes. Thanks to this new found wealth and the strong leadership of the late UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the emirate prospered. The small island settlement was transformed into the modern, cosmopolitan city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The Al Nahyan family has ruled Abu Dhabi since 1793. It has transformed the desert sheikhdom into a modern society, which maintains respect for its roots and jealously preserves its natural and cultural heritage. The current ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is also President of the UAE. Abu Dhabi’s culture is firmly rooted in the Arabian Peninsula’s Islamic traditions. Islam is more than just a religion; it is a way of life that governs the everyday habits and traditions of its followers. Among the most highly prized virtues are courtesy and hospitality, and visitors are sure to be charmed by the genuine friendliness of the people.

4

While enjoying the bountiful wealth of its hydrocarbon resources, Abu Dhabi is striving to reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons by broadening its economy. Massive investments have been made in infrastructure, tourism, transport, health and education as part of the government’s 2030 urban plan. Abu Dhabi has developed into a world-class destination by creating an infrastructure to support and nurture a sustainable tourism industry promoting and preserving the emirate’s distinctive heritage and culture. One of the principal ways it furthers these aims is through an extensive programme of high-end cultural, sporting and entertainment events, achieved through a network of sponsorships and partnerships with both the private and public sectors. Such events raise the profile of Abu Dhabi internationally and attract local, regional and international audiences. While care is being taken to protect the emirate’s unique archaeological heritage and remarkable natural landscape, a whole new cultural quarter is being built on Saadiyat Island, featuring world-class museums designed by some of the world’s leading architects.

Abu Dhabi is tolerant and all visitors are welcome. However, Islam is a way of life in the city, and therefore visitors should adopt a certain level of cultural and religious sensitivity for the duration of their stay. While dress codes are fairly liberal, swimwear should only be worn on beaches or at swimming pools. Any form of nudity is strictly forbidden, including topless sunbathing. When visiting shopping malls and other attractions, visitors should wear clothing that is

From the vantage point on level 124, participants will experience first-hand this modern architectural and engineering marvel.

On the island, participants can relax and swim in the beautiful waters or, for the more energetic, volleyball and beach football will be available. A buffet lunch will be served on the catamaran.

The tour will then take participants to the Dubai Gold Souk, well worth a visit even if you have no intention of buying anything. A large variety of gold is sold here and as prices are generally determined by weight rather than design and craftsmanship, items are very reasonably priced. Participants will have lunch on a Dhow, a traditional sailing vessel primarily used to carry items such as fruit, fresh water or merchandise, along the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula. After lunch the tour will continue with a photo stop near to the sailshaped Burj Al Arab hotel before returning to Abu Dhabi.

Tours 3, 7 & 10 Cultural Tour Abu Dhabi Monday 13, Tuesday 14 AND Wednesday 15 October 08.30 to 12.30 Steeped in the rich traditions of the Middle East, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, artfully blends the ancient past with the modern present. Visit one of the world’s largest mosques, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Non-Muslims cannot enter mosques in the UAE but Sheikh Zayed Mosque is an exception.

The tour will continue with a drive along the mesmerising Corniche to Heritage Village. This reconstruction of a traditional oasis village provides an interesting glimpse into the past. Traditional aspects of the desert way of life are attractively displayed in this open museum which includes workshops where craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills such as metal work and pottery, while women sit weaving and spinning.

Please note: participants will need to adhere to the strict dress code to enter the Mosque.

Tours 4, 8 and 12 Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World Monday 13 AND Tuesday 14 October 12.45 to 18.00 Wednesday 15 October 08.30 to 13.45 Yas Marina Circuit is one of the world’s most advanced Grand Prix venues. Participants on this tour will have the opportunity to tour the 21 corners of the circuit as it twists through Yas island, passing by the marina and through the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel and out into the sand dunes. The group will also explore Yas Central with its racing school activities and cars, the F1 team pits and garages and the race control room.

Places are limited, but if you would like to test drive a racing car on the Yas Marina Circuit, please contact Ovation Arabia who will be happy to arrange this during your stay in Abu Dhabi. The cost varies from USD 200 to USD 450 for a 10 to 60 minute experience, payable directly to Ovation. All test drives are subject to availability. The tour will continue to Ferrari World, the only Ferrari-themed amusement park in the world. The iconic roof of Ferrari World is modelled after the side profile of a Ferrari GT and covers 200,000 square metres (2,152,782 square feet), making it the largest indoor amusement park in the world. Guests will enjoy thrilling rides, exciting attractions, themed stores and restaurants all inspired by the Ferrari brand and its Italian heritage. The theme park has 20 rides including Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster reaching a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph), a truly amazing experience!

11

Shopping Shuttle One of Abu Dhabi’s greatest visitor attractions is its superb shopping. The city draws large numbers of ‘shopping tourists’ from countries within the region and from as far as Europe, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The shuttle will stop at the Marina Mall and the World Trade Centre Souk. Marina Mall is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the capital. The Mall comprises of 122,000 square metres of retail space featuring a unique choice of fashion, leisure and entertainment. The World Trade Centre Souk is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional market in Abu Dhabi. When strolling through any of its 250 outlets, shoppers will find items such as abayas (the robe-like dress worn by some women in parts of the Muslim world), henna, spices, jewellery, Arabic perfumes, clothing and accessories of all kinds.

20 12

The Shopping Shuttle will be running from 12.00 to 18.00 on Tuesday and Friday afternoon, and Wednesday morning from 09.00 to 12.30.

Masdar City is the world’s first zero-carbon, zerowaste city. Although the desert might seem an unlikely location for such a sustainable undertaking, Masdar will tread lightly on the landscape by harnessing solar power and relying on construction features that resist high temperatures, including extra shading and slab cooling. The design is rooted in the Arabic tradition of walled cities but Masdar’s stone and mud walls will be covered in photovoltaic panels capable of generating 130 megawatts. Electricity will also come from photovoltaic cells integrated into rooftops and a 20 megawatt wind farm. The city will get its water from a solar-powered desalination plant.

Maats Golf Tournament Tuesday 14 October 07.00 to 15.30 (times to be confirmed) The golf tournament in Abu Dhabi will be the third one sponsored by Maats Pipeline Equipment and the venue will be the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. The championship course designed by Gary Player provides one of the most challenging and rewarding in the golfing world today. The imaginative golf course routing provides a spectacular variety of golf experiences with every hole having its own unique character. From the creation of an aquatic habitat, to the introduction of salt-water lagoons, restoration of the beach and sand dunes, the course has been designed with strict environmentally-friendly guidelines and a true sensitivity to the surrounding natural environment. As the Gulf’s first ocean course, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club has been designed to entice golfing enthusiasts from around the world with some of the most spectacular golf hole designs. For further details on the golf course please visit www.sbgolfclub.ae As in previous tournaments, places are limited so we advise you to register early.

Business Hours

Bargaining is only recommended when visiting traditional “souks” (open-air market places).

Eating Out With expatriates making up over 88% of UAE’s population, Abu Dhabi has a fantastic assortment of international-standard restaurants catering to all budgets and tastes. Indulge in a variety of Michelin starred, top-rated restaurants and exceptional cuisine.

Tipping Tipping practices are similar to most parts of the world. Some restaurants include service; otherwise 10 per cent is adequate.

Electricity The electricity in Abu Dhabi is 220V. All guest rooms, suites and villas in The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal have electrical sockets that can take a British 3-pin or a standard European 2-pin plug. Some appliances brought from abroad will require a voltage transformer.

Time Local time is GMT +4 hours.

It is against the law to drink alcohol whilst walking in the street or to be drunk in a public place. This law is strictly applied. It is an offence to carry alcohol in your car if you do not hold the special alcohol license. If you come to the attention of the police you may be arrested, even though you may have purchased the alcohol legally. You need to be 21 or over in order to drink alcohol legally in the UAE. Driving laws have a zero alcohol tolerance. Drugs are strictly forbidden, even a residual amount. Consuming or carrying drugs, even if you are transiting through the airport from one country to another, can result in a standard four year imprisonment and deportation. Buying or selling narcotics is considered a serious crime which can result in life imprisonment. Over the counter or prescription medications If you are bringing prescription medication into the UAE it is advisable to bring a doctor’s note with you. Some medicines containing psychotropic substances are forbidden, so check with the nearest UAE Embassy or Consulate before you travel as you may need to seek prior agreement from the authorities.

Follow a few simple rules of respect Muslims pray five times a day. You will notice that the Mosques call people to prayer through a speaker system. At this time you will also notice public music is turned off as Muslims perform their daily prayers. Be aware that drivers who are not close to a Mosque may stop at a convenient lay-by to pray privately.

Traditions and customs Greetings in the Middle Eastern region are very different from the rest of the world. In the UAE, women do not shake hands with men. For this reason it is normal when meeting a local Emirati man for the first time that one should not expect the man to extend a handshake to a woman or vice versa.

Queuing Most areas where you have to queue have a special line for women so they can be attended without delay. Alternatively, if there is just one queue being served, women are requested to come up to the front of the queue by the teller.
