XIAN ZHANG

Dear Friends, Music speaks. It’s our most profound and direct form of communication; it tells stories and expresses emotions. For our 2018–19 season, I’ve chosen pieces that are inspired by great stories, myths and poems, bringing these words to vivid life. And as we welcome jazz musicians, Indian sarod virtuosos and singers from Newark and the New Jersey community, and celebrate Chinese New Year all on the NJSO stages, I hope you’ll hear how music speaks in a common language across diverse cultures and traditions. From our season–opening performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to our collaborations with the finest soloists—including Emanuel Ax, Daniil Trifonov, Augustin Hadelich, Dawn Upshaw and so many more—to our special presentations of two unmissable Star Wars films, this season is full of highlights. I look forward to seeing you at our concerts and hearing how our music speaks to you.

XIAN’S MEMORIES OF CHINESE NEW YEAR When I think about the Chinese New Year, these memories always come to me: large family gatherings, the aroma of delicious food, fireworks at midnight (dangerously fun for kids) and above all, the joy of simply being together at this special time of the year. Ever since I came to the United States, I have celebrated Chinese New Year less and less often. But in my heart, just like for many people who grew up in a foreign country, the nostalgia is always there, the longing of the old times will never go away. It’s important to me that my own boys and kids like them get their chance to know what Chinese New Year is like. At the start of the most fortunate “Pig” year, I look forward to seeing our community coming together and celebrating with the NJSO.

Strong artistic and educational partnerships—such as MANY (Music Advancement for Newark-Area Youth), a joint program designed to provide students in the Newark area with high-quality instrumental music instruction—foster opportunities to impact the lives of area residents. Because of this shared commitment, the NJSO is proud to be the resident orchestra of NJPAC. Since its opening on October 18, 1997, NJPAC has attracted nearly 10 million visitors and reached more than 1.5 million children with innovative arts education programs. Prudential Hall’s crystalline acoustics are on full display whenever an instrumentalist, singer or symphonic orchestra sounds the first note. Beautiful music-making continues to be the foundation of NJPAC’s programming, which each season accounts for more than 400 plays, recitals, spoken-word performances and other cultural experiences. Among the world-class performers who have appeared at NJPAC are Joshua Bell, Lang Lang, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Bob Dylan, Jerry Seinfeld, Diana Ross, El Gran Combo, Chris Botti, Sting and Aretha Franklin. Many artists and writers have praised NJPAC’s Prudential Hall for its beauty and extraordinary acoustics, among them former New York Times critic Hans Fantel (one of the “world’s greatest concert halls”) and arts critic Clive Barnes (the “nation’s most glamorous theater”).

TO READ THIS GRID: Start at the top by selecting the venue that interests you, and at NJPAC or State Theatre New Jersey, a specific series by day of the week. Note that the number of concerts in each series is listed beneath the series name. When a date is shown in the column, it is included in that series. The program that is presented on that date is listed to the left. Follow your selected column down to identify the dates and programs in that series. Prices by seating level are shown at the bottom of each column and maps illustrating the levels on the back of this page. The colors on the seating maps correspond to the colors of each seating level in the grid.

LOVE GOING TO CONCERTS, BUT WANT A MORE RELAXING WAY TO GET THERE? Leave the driving to us! The NJSO offers luxury coach transportation from several locations throughout New Jersey. For just $5 per concert, take the bus to select series. If you are interested in using this transportation option, please visit www.njsymphony.org/bus to complete an online form, or call Patron Services at 1.800.ALLEGRO (255.3476). PLEASE NOTE: At least 25 people are needed to ride the bus, so pickup locations and times will be scheduled near the beginning of the season. These locations are determined by the intent expressed, so tell us of your interest, and tell your friends to ride the symphony bus! Bus service has been underwritten by a very generous anonymous donor.
