012 NJCL OFFICERS - OR, AS YOU WILL SHORTLY DISCOVER, THE JUSTICE CLASSICAL LEAGUE!

PRESIDENT DANIEL KIM IS A PHILLIPS EXETER SENIOR BY DAY, WELL-VERSED IN CICERONIAN ORATORY....

... AND THE MASKED VIGILANTE "ECHO" BY NIGHT, ANNOYING BADDIES TO DEATH VIA IMITATION! BUT HER FOES KNOW HER AS THE DREADED "TWOTHIRDS," THE HEROINE WHO DOES EVERYTHING IN 2/3RDS THE AMOUNT OF TIME AS A NORMAL PERSON!

HIS SECOND-IN-COMMAND, 1ST VP ERIKA RUSS, SEEMS TO BE AN OUTDOORSY, BOOKWORMY KENTUCKAN. 2ND VICE PRES AKHILA ANANTHRAM IS APARRENTLY A CHEERLEADING COMPUTER WHIZ FROM VIRGINIA ...

... BUT LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING! SHE IS, IN SECRET, THE HIGH-FLYING, SIZE-CHANGING "MINI MENACE!"

30

IN REALITY, SHE IS THE TELEPORTING, ILLUSIONCREATING "IRIS!"

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR, SAFEEYAH QUERESHI, LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL* THEATERGEEK FROM WISCONSIN. PARLIAMENTARIAN SAM BUCK APPEARS TO BE A HUMANITIES-LOVING HIPSTER FROM OHIO ...

... INDEED, FEW PEOPLE KNOW SHE IS, IN FACT, THE GAVEL-WIELDING "CONSTITUTIONAL CONQUEROR!" SHE IS EQUALLY AWESOME AS HER ALTER-EGO "CANVAS," THE SUPERHEROINE THAT CAN BRING ANYTHING TO LIFE WITH HER MAGICAL PAINTBRUSH! (AND PHOTOSHOP.)

ART-LOVING BOSTONIAN FEMINIST EMILY CHANG SERVES AS THE LEAGUE'S AWESOME HISTORIAN. *OF COURSE, NO THEATER GEEK IS REALLY NORMAL, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT WE MEAN.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN KURT RISTROPH IS THE NJCL EDITOR.

IN HIS SPARE TIME, KURT FIGHTS CRIME AS THE "ONE MAN TRIUMVIRATE" - POWERED BY PUNS, HE HAS THE STRENGTH, AGILITY, AND INTELLIGENCE OF THREE MEN! THE JUSTICE CLASSICAL LEAGUERS FIGHT CRIME...

HEY GROUP! I THINK WE SHOULD GET A PUPPY! WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

DAN, WE ALREADY HAVE A DOG. YEAH, BUT IT'S NOT GOOD-LOOKING, LIKE ME. ALSO, IT'S OLD. iT'S ONLY THREE WEEKS OLD, DANIEL.

keep the classics alive and well...

THAT'S LIKE, 90 DOG YEARS, OR SOMETHING.

AH DUR HUR HUR HURRRRRRR!

32

PATIENCE, PATIENCE. SOON I WILL BE PRESIDENT, INSTEAD OF THAT INSIPID IMBECILE.

AND DO THE BIDDING OF THE JCL COMMITTEE. OH SWEET! I JUST LEVELLED UP ON WORLD OF WARCRAFT!

CHAIRPERSON ELIFRITS, WE WERE UNFORTUNATELY UNABLE TO PREVENT LATIN FROM DYING. BUT WE ARE WORKING OUR VERY HARDEST ON REVIVING IT.

DANIEL, I WAS PROMISED RESULTS. YOUR TEAM'S PERFORMANCE IS... UPSETTING.

THEY EVEN FIND TIME TO HAVE FUN. JUNO ALMIGHTY! ISN'T THAT--?!

FRIENDS! ROMANS! BEHOLD THE MAN MY BRUSH BROUGHT TO LIFE!

YES! IT IS WILL SMITH! HUH, I THOUGHT IT WAS JESSE EISENBERG. HE MUST HAVE CHANGED AFTER HE WENT MAINSTREAM.

I JUST WORK HERE. PEOPLE CHANGE, SAM--PEOPLE CHANGE, AND PEOPLE DIE. LIFE IS PAINFUL AND FULL OF NEEDLESS SUFFERING.

33

ONE THING'S FOR SURE. OH, I JUST CRACK MYSELF UP. I SHOULD START DOING STAND-UP.

HOLD STILL, WILD PUN!! OR I'LL SHOOT!! -- HAHA, GET IT?! ALL THEY'VE GOT IS EACH OTHER.

IN THE END ... WHY IS EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD SUCH A TOOL?

WHY WON'T DANIEL ACCEPT MY FRIEND REQUEST? I HELPED DELIVER HIS STUPID PROMPOSAL!

BEATS ME.

WAIT, HOW ARE YOU HEARING MY THOUGHTS? NO IDEA.

IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE I VOTED AGAINST GETTING ANOTHER DOG. GOSH, HE IS SO PETTY.

FOR ALL THEIR WEIRD OUTFITS, ILLOGICAL IDIOSYNCRASIES, AND GEEKY NERDINESS...

THE JUSTICE CLASSICAL LEAGUE IS FAMILY.

34

IT'S SAD THAT SUCH A CLOSE-KNIT GROUP OF FRIENDS WILL ONE DAY HAVE TO LEAVE EACH OTHER, BUT LEAVE THEY MUST! DANIEL, SAFEEYAH, AND EMILY ARE HEADED TO PRINCETON UNIVERSITY. ERIKA IS LEAVING FOR VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY. AKHILA IS ATTENDING CORNELL. SAM WILL BE GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO. KURT WILL BE OFF AT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN SEPTEMBER.

WHAT ADVENTURES AWAIT THEM IN THE FUTURE? ONLY TIME WILL TELL! - FIN.

NJCL PLANNING MEETINGS Contributors: Emily Chang and Caitlin Johnston

Twice a year, the National Committee and NJCL Officers get together to plan National Convention. Fall Planning Meeting took place this year from October 20 to 23 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Spring Planning Meeting took place from March 24 to 26 in Indianapolis, Indiana. My personal favorite part is the food.

The Design Thinking Project In this project, I examined National Convention from a Design Thinking perspective, using ethnographic research, surveys, and interviews to inform my learning. At Fall and Spring Planning Meetings, I presented my discoveries to the board, and several of them will be adopted in this year’s Convention (2012). The "Keep Your Ears Out" column in the Convention Ear is a result of the Project. Three new events, Gladiator Games, JCL Quidditch, and the State Officers' Workshop also came about because of this project. This was my way of giving back to the JCL Community, in addition to the creation of this scrapbook. I want to make a difference, and I hope I have helped to create some positive ripple effect in your life.

This was part of my Project - I created three "Personas" based on the types of delegates who typically attend National Convention (Zoom in for a better view.)

Events

Ludi Octobres - October 22, 2011 Ludi Octobres was held at St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco, California. Planned by Northern Representative Marie Musumeci, delegates from Northern California were invited to play some certamen, compete in a couple academic tests, and participate in educational workshops. As usual, Ludi was a great success, attracting 476 students from 20 different schools. Southern California Regional Amici Madness (SCRAM) - November 19, 2011 SCRAM was held at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes, California (South LA). The event attracted JCLers from all over SoCal, who spent a day at the high school partaking in various tests, events, and workshops. 800 students attended the well managed event, and two new workshops were found to be extremely popular: "Project Runway" and "Caesar's Apprentice." These ideas were later implemented at the State Latin Convention, in March the next year. Junior Classical League State Latin Convention - March 30-31, 2012 The annual State Latin Convention was held at Menlo School in Atherton, California. Months of careful planning led by Senior Marjor y Marquardt and Junior Lena Gloeckler culminated in March when over 1300 students from nearly 50 different schools gathered together to celebrate the Latin language. With the addition of new events such as "Angry Birds", "Project Runway", and an "Aeneid Recitation", delegates thoroughly enjoyed the convention as they competed in spirit competitions, chariot races, speech deliverance, composition, and the ever popular Certamen. Overall, the event was a great success and the entire board is looking forward to another great convention, hosted this time by Sage Hill High School in Newport Beach.

Founding Mythos Louisiana was not one of the 11 states which met in in 1953 to elect officers and plan the first national convention which would be held in 1954. However, Louisiana was one of the 18 states at the first convention in 1954. The first national officer from Louisiana was Linda Hill from Bastrop, LA who was the 1955 - 1956 National Treasurer, a position that no longer exists.

Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you THE MICHIGAN JUNIOR CLASSICAL league's section in this scrapbook is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Norma Goldman, who unfortunately passed away on October 1, 2011 at the age of 89. Dr. Norma Goldman was always learning and always teaching. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wayne State University, and for

thirty years spent her summers and falls as a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome where she participated in as many activities as possible, including underwater archaeology in the Mediterranean Sea, which she took up in her seventies. She also became an expert in Roman costume reconstruction, and demonstrated this through live fashion shows and videos.

Dr. Goldman taught at Wayne State University for over 48 years and earned the distinguished alumni award in 1985. Norma regularly took on multiple projects, including the writing of books (such as the best-selling Latin textbook Latin via Ovid), and the production of educational and historic films with the BBC. She co-founded the Detroit Classical Association with Dr. Edith Kovach (1921-2009) in 1957.

Make a Difference Days We have 4 MADDs (Make a Difference Day) ever year, one for each region of the state. The Southwest MADD this year was organized by Carolyn Boyce from Summit. They cleaned up the California woods nature preserve on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The Central MADD was organized by Nick Grewal from Columbus Academy. They helped Project Linus out by making blankets out of cut felt. Nick also organized for the project linus group to come to convention so that our entire state could help make blankets. The MADD was held on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The Northwest MADD was planned by Charlie Baddour of Westlake. They served breakfast to families staying in the Rondald Mcdonald house on Saturday, October 29, and Saturday, November 5, 2011. The Northeast MADD was organized by A.J. Yule of Shaker Heights. They helped organize and package food at the Cleveland food bank on Saturday, October 29, 2011.

Certamen Competitions In the SW region of OH (Cincinnati), 6 local competitions took place during the 2011-

154

2012 school year. These events are always on Saturdays, from 9 am-11ish am. There were 3 preliminary rounds and then the finals for the top 3 teams. All rounds had 15 toss-ups with 1 bonus question for each toss-up. The dates for the certamen were: Sept 24 (Madeira), Oct 29 (Summit), Nov 12 (Wyoming), Dec 10 (Indian Hill), Jan 21 (Xavier University), and Jan 28 (Seven Hills) In the Cleveland area (Northwest and Northeast), St. Edwards hosted an Open Certamen in Oct or Nov. Westlake had an Open Certamen onDec 10. Shaker Heights hosted its certamen on Jan 29th. The OH State Certamen Championship took place at the annual OJCL Convention. Three preliminary rounds and the semi-finals occurred on Saturday morning, and the finals were held Saturday night. Each preliminary round consisted of 20 toss-up questions – no bonus questions were included in these 3 round robin matches due to the time constraints of convention. The semis and the finals had 15 toss-ups with 1 bonus question for each toss-up.

State Convention Each year we host a convention in Columbus which brings together 1,000 students, teachers, and parents from across the state of Ohio to celebrate the study of Latin. There are a variety of competitive activities at the

convention: academic tests, art contests, certamen, and creative performances (in both English and Latin). In addition, the convention offers a number of social activities, including a dance, a toga banquet, and the new ‘OJCL’s Got Talent!’ The convention is a wonderful opportunity for OH Latin students to earn recognition for their academic & artistic achievements, to gain leadership skills in the state organization, and to make new friends from around the state. This year the convention was held on February 24 and 25 with the theme "Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentor ito." (Do not give into evils, bvut proceed more boldly against them - Vergil, Aeneid 6.95)

Overview Wisconsin JCL is a very active state chapter which sent 80 people to National Convention at Eastern Kentucky University. At state convention we have a limit of 500 people because one year we almost had 700 and it was hectic. We also love to have barbeques at the Wallach house.

Events

gather in the cold Wisconsin weather to compete academically and enjoy the Latin craziness! Shoe Drive for Soles 4 Souls – from November to Convention – The WJCL collected 4 boxes of shoes for the Soles 4 Souls organization this year, leading up to convention. Coin War – 1/27 – 1/29 – The WJCL raised almost $500 in a coin war that ended with the WJCL Editor, Quinn Otero, throwing a pie in the WJCL Treasurer, Trenton McMaster’s face. WJ^2CL – 4/29 – Local middle school Latin scholars come to meet at Brookfield Academy to experience a small portion of State Convention by taking various tests and playing certamen. 1st Castra and Barbeque – 6/13 – Latin scholars who are attending nationals attend a day of certamen and Latin and end the day with a fun barbeque at Magistra Wallach’s house.
