he NJCAA’s mission is to promote, govern, and foster a competitive environment for two-year college athletics. The NJCAA recognizes the diverse nature of its membership, providing at all times a consistent and inclusive governance structure that provides opportunities for all stakeholders and emphasizes the academic, athletic, and community involvement goals of all student-athletes.

ACADEMIC & ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE To nurture a culture that will adapt to the changing needs of our member institutions and students that will maximize the student-athlete experience academically and athletically; and to promote and celebrate their involvement and achievements. OPPORTUNITY To provide extensive and diverse programs that meet the changing needs of our member institutions and students. PROFESSIONALISM To strive to hold all relative factions of the NJCAA to the highest professional standards of safety, integrity, and sportsmanship. EQUITY To afford all athletes and member colleges an inclusive and consistent environment that provides a challenging and rewarding experience. TRUST To endeavor to create an atmosphere of inclusion, communication, and transparency with the goal to unify all as one team. EDUCATION To provide training and leadership opportunities that foster the professional development of all members.

GENERATE OPPORTUNITY The NJCAA serves a wide range of students and communities. Each member college has its own unique mission and strategic direction, and must respond in its own way to local needs, as well as the constantly changing landscape of two-year college athletics. One charge we all have in common is to generate opportunity for student-athletes through sports competition, academic performance, serving their communities, and becoming better citizens.

COMPETITION The NJCAA provides a framework that allows for a competitive experience among member schools, along with the flexibility to respond to the changing landscape of academic programming at community colleges. Two-year college athletics provides the opportunity to student-athletes to strive academically as well as experience a high level of athletic competition for all. COMMUNICATION With the great variety and tremendous volume of information that surrounds us each day, clear and effective communication can be challenging—and a standard for accurate, timely communications to all levels of the NJCAA membership is vital. Clear position expectations and processes will assure accountability and standards among all divisions. ADVOCACY Athletics plays a vital role on the campuses and in the communities of NJCAA member institutions—and even greater potential lies ahead. Through expanded and improved marketing and branding opportunities, the NJCAA will strengthen connections among member colleges, and raise awareness and support for colleg athletics.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Athletic competition fosters leadership development on many levels—for student athletes, as well as coaches, staff, and association officers and representatives. Sports, athletic programs, college campuses, and the NJCAA are all at their best with top quality leadership, and ample opportunities for leadership development training and succession planning.

PROCESS FOR IMPLEMENATION The NJCAA Executive Committee is responsible for initiating goals and initiatives through the use of all association resources in support of the Strategic Plan. Each year a report will be presented to the association’s full Board of Directors at its annaul meeting. A copy of that report, as well as any feedback from the Board and member colleges, will be included in the published minutes of each meeting.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES It is necessary, and crucial, for administrators at member NJCAA colleges to have the opportunity to learn and grow hand in hand with the association. The future of the NJCAA depends upon the training and development being offered today. Therefore, the NJCAA will: • Develop a mentorship program for coaches, athletic directors and regional directors. • Coordinate existing leadership and professional development opportunities and promote them to the NJCAA membership (e.g., participation in other professional association conferences, workshops, training programs, etc.). • Explore leadership training opportunities within the NJCAA. • Develop a process to share best practices for conducting business at the regional level. • Explore developing a student-athletic advisory group representing all three divisions of the NJCAA.

PROVIDE STATISTICAL & DATA DRIVEN RESEARCH A national system of data collection is necessary for the continued support of NJCAA member colleges and student-athletes. College administrations are demanding data driven documentation that supports the funding of athletic programs. To truly use the name, student-athlete, we must create a nationwide data collection process which will: • Establish a definition of academic success within the NJCAA. • Coordinate the creation of a national data set. • Explore already existing programs focused on the collection of academic data. • Establish a template to be used by all member colleges for data collection. • Create a portal through which colleges can share best practices for institutional research as it relates to athletics.

CREATE NATIONAL STANDARDS The success of an organization is dependent upon all constituents being aware of, and abiding by, the same processes and rules. With a widely diverse membership, and 24 autonomous regions, the NJCAA must clearly identify and communicate the most effective ways to conduct business in support of our student-athletes. The success of the NJCAA is dependent upon the success of our member colleges. In support of that ideal, the NJCAA will: • Develop expectations and roles relative to national responsibilities for member colleges. • Create an efficient eligibility process which decreases duplication of information at the institutional level. • Create a more efficient communication process between the NJCAA office, national leadership positions and member colleges.

COMPETITION STRUCTURE The NJCAA is comprised of a very diverse membership representing athletic programs of various sizes, funding and levels of competition. Growing out of a need to provide separate levels of competition for colleges choosing to offer athletic aid at various levels, the NJCAA must now look to evaluate the divisional structure of the association. In doing so, the NJCAA will increase representation across all levels of competition as well as address concerns relative to the current regional boundaries. • Define the purpose of the association in terms of membership support and levels of competition. • Develop a divisional structure that represents the needs and desires of the NJCAA membership. • Develop a plan to address sports that currently are not offered at all divisional levels. • Develop a plan to address the regional fluctuations of member colleges within each region.

MARKETING, BRANDING & PROMOTION Brand recognition is imperative to the continued success of the NJCAA. Student-athletes and all constituents should be proud to represent their institution and the NJCAA. This increased brand recognition will in turn make the NJCAA more attractive to national sponsors. Understanding the challenges faced by member institutions relative to promotions and publicity, the NJCAA will: • Develop an association-wide marketing strategy and a sponsorship strategy. • Develop a marketing template in conjunction with the NJCAA for use by member colleges in promoting their athletic programs. • Clarify and refine the NJCAA brand. • Develop an advocacy campaign for NJCAA.

I believe this strategic plan is a strong step forward in not only achieving our goals both for the membership and for student- athletes, but will also strengthen the association for years to come. Bryce Roderick NJCAA President
