OUR MASTER PLANNING PHILOSOPHY Institutions typically control large tracts of land with multiple buildings and open spaces that provide places for people to learn, work, play and sometimes live. Often these are places that have fascinating, important histories and traditions. We understand the importance of this Master Plan to the Institutional community. Master Planning is the one of the few times that institutions sit back and think about what they would like to be in the future. For the Master Planners it is a time to listen to these thoughts, finding ways to make them reality. Based on a thorough knowledge of what is there today, what was there yesterday, and an understanding of what the institution would like to be in the future, the Master Planner pieces the puzzle together. Master Planning can require taking a whole new approach to the operation of the physical plan. Other times only simple modifications achieve great things. It is our philosophy to listen and learn, then explore the range of possibilities, with our Clients, to help achieve a realistic and appropriate direction for the future

ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN - ARNOLD, MD

Anne Arundel Community College focuses on the Forensic Sciences and Nursing, located southeastern just off the scenic Atlantic shore line of Arundel Maryland, needed a campus wide master plan that accommodates space needed for a 30 percent growth in enrollment proposed over the next ten years. A participatory planning process involved representatives from all segments of the campus community. Studies included a comprehensive needs assessment, classroom utilization study, a throughout site analysis and strategic implementation plan. The plan includes recommendations for, siting a new conferencing center, improved student life facilities, expanded athletic facilities an expanded library, nursing academic space, and the development of student parking on the perimeter of the campus. expanded athletic facilities and the development of visual and pedestrian connections to the campus greens.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE OF MAINE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN - STANDISH, ME

Saint Joseph's College of Maine, a small Catholic Liberal Arts College located on the southeastern shore of Sebago Lake, needed a campus wide master plan that accommodates space needed for a 30 percent growth in enrollment proposed over the next ten years. THOMAS COLLEGE OF MAINE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN - WATERVILLE, ME

Thomas College is on a fast track expansion, to accommodate the overwhelming number of students applications, specifically out-of-state students. A master Plan was prepared to formalize open space and future building locations on this Waterville Maine Campus. Increased dining, athletic facilities and classroom buildings will be added to the campus. The new facilities surround a proposed College Quadrangle, creating a central gathering space for students and faculty and providing an improved image for the College. New and reconfigured parking areas, roads, utilities and landscaping were parts of this Plan.

The University of Maine Master Plan supports the evolving academic and research mission of the university while promoting sustainability at the broadest level, protecting architectural and landscape resources, improving campus life, and providing a comprehensive vision for the future. The plan goals were to advance the land grant mission through stewardship, management, and local partnerships; enhance the cultural legacy of the campus by restoring and extending the quality and character of the core campus landscape; and create a collegiate environment accommodating strategic academic and research expansion while enhancing the sense of community and fostering collaboration. The master plan provides strategies for protecting the historic landscapes, organizing new districts, reutilizing existing historic buildings, utilizing land more efficiently through redevelopment and infill, and a comprehensive sustainability strategy.

The Plan brings b together the natural context c of the Najran N Valley and its most bbeautiful featurre the Wadi w with the character of o the traditionaal Town of Najrran, with their vertical v buildinggs that rise aboove the Natural Environment. We reinterpreted the Wadi element as a major Centraal Park aroundd which are orgganized the buuildings that maake up the Town Center. We em mployed modeern materials and a constructioon methods annd a modern pplanning approach to marry the traditional t with the most curreent mixed use Town T Center d evelopment layyouts as follow ws. All functionns are organizeed around a Raadial Fan-Shapped plan. The C Centerpiece of Phase 1 is thee Retail Markett at the Ground flooor. The Radiaal Plan Geomeetry of the Marrket embraces a Major Central Park that pprovides relief to the Resident as a well as a Civvic Space: a veenue for culturaal, commercial aand leisure acttivities. The Major Buildings of Phase P One aree organized eitther to frame TThe Market and the Central Park, or point to the central pubblic space. Each one of the functionnal elements are a engaged with w a Curved Walk that ties the entire Phase 1 togetheer. The Curved Waalk refers to thhe old historic trade t Routes in the area. CANADIAN MARCONI CORPORATION OFFICE BUILDING RIYADH KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

A new branch office for Canadian Marconi Company, who provides Avionics Products, and Cockpit System Integration, project management, programming services, flight training and maintenance. This new two story building will allow the Riyadh Office to consolidate into a single 17,708 m2 (190,600s.f.) building, with the aim of encouraging the cross pollination of the different disciplines and support the needs of a learning organization. Numerous team conferencing rooms have been provided throughout the facility each with video conferencing capabilities and smart board technology. The building is planned to incorporate several energy savings technologies to stand as an example of the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship. MOHAWAREAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP RIYADH KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

This new three story 5200 m2 (55 972 sf) Headquarters for Mohawarean International Group (MIG) will reflect the forward thinking and innovation of this fast growing international corporation, expanding since 2001 in Saudi Arabia and now operating in countries including; Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, China, India, United Kingdom and the United States of America. MIG has over 10,000 employees and annual revenues exceeding US$1.5 billion. MIG has expanded from the Oil and Gas industry into; Aviation and Security, Power and Water, District Cooling, Railways, Logistics, and Medical Supplies and Services. The building is planned to incorporate several technologies to stand as an example of the company’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. KING ABDULLAH FORENSIC LABORATORIES RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

This flexible 85,000 sf Classroom and Forensic Laboratory Building, smaller facilities will be provided on 6 sites. To support the education of civil defense students this new technologically advanced facility will provide the finest teaching and simulation facilities in the Middle East. The facilities E-Classrooms include the latest audio visual technology, which allows distance learning, and supports electronic audio visual links to all of the programs offered on the 31 dispersed sites located through the Kingdom. The Classroom and Laboratory Building contains classrooms, lecture halls, and teaching Laboratories for studying and analysis of; Narcotics , Ballistic Testing and Analysis, Weapons Training, Crime Scene Evidence, Fingerer Printing, Passport, Forgery, Civil Defense, Traffic, Topographic and Geo Spatial, Communications and Computer Simulation. KING ABDULLAH PROJECT II – SECURITY COLLEGES NATIONAL DATA CENTER & PRINTING FACILITY KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

This highly secure 126,000 sf data center and printing facility will be the central server for the entire KAP II project, serving over 31 security campuses Kingdom wide. The Data Center will support 42,000s.d. of computer server space and is designed to be a Tier III N+1 facility. The center is designed to be secure, but gives the outward appearance of a light people friendly place to work and visit, as opposed to the typical bunker characteristics so often seen in facilities of this type. KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT MOSQUE COMPETITION RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

On a tight urban site, the mosque is contemporary, with a subtle sloping cubic form, with metal patterned grilles reflecting traditional Islamic forms shading the expanses of glass, that connect the interior to the exterior. The design reflects the simplicity of Islam, and the inward search for peace, through contemplation and prayer. The reflecting pool reinforces the Islamic concept, of the sacred qualities to water as a lifegiving, sustaining, and purifying resource. The entire building is clad in Riyadh sandstone, a native material, while the pool on which the mosque rests is lined with polished black and red marble. The focal point of the 50-foot square prayer room is the mihrab, aligned with Mecca, and clad in traditional Islamic tile.

SAUDI AVIATION FLIGHT ACADEMY THUMAMAH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

SAFA is the only flight training academy in the Kingdom to offer a hybrid-mix of technically advanced training aircraft and simulation to ensure that their students obtain the most effective training available today. SAFA offers one of the finest civilian flight training facilities in the world. Situated on a 4,000 meter long runway, the new campus will be 253,000 s.f. The Academy’s facilities will include the Flight School, Maintenance Hanger, 20 Shade Hangers, Shopping, Student Residences that accommodate over 200 students in double room apartments, Staff Housing and Recreational Buildings. KING ABDULLAH PROJECT II - SECURITY FORCES COLLEGE CAMPUSES & TRAINING CAMPS SHOOTING RANGES, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA Design of five prototypical firing ranges to be site adapted at 33 different sites across the Kingdom. The ranges consist of a combination of 25m, 100m, 150m ranges and 800m sniper ranges. The 800m ranges will be used by Saudi Special Forces. Each range will have 20–30 lanes. The ranges will support the training programs for the various component institutes of the Ministry of Interior. The ranges will be site adapted as either exterior fully enclosed partially baffled, or as indoor partially baffled ranges dependent on the locations and availability of suitable Safety Danger Zones. The targeting systems will include LOMAH for box targets, pop-ups and both horizontal and diagonal moving targets. Each facility will include an indoor simulator range. RED CRESENT LUXURY HOTEL AND WELLNESS CENTER RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA - 368 Unit 47 Story Tower The design emerged from the notion of the Oasis was that of fabulous dining, recreation, luxurious accommodations and the extraordinary service gathered in on perimeter location surrounded by rippling waters and palm trees. The plan calls for a building that meets the highest sustainability criteria of LEED Platinum. Included sustainable features among other ; photovoltaic glass panels on facades, combined solarium balconies / vertical solar chimneys at the buildings main facades for passive cooling elaborate louver system that responds to solar rays from all directions and passive cooling water system through a major water fall at the main entrance. Crowning the building is a rotating restaurant designed as a glowing star in the city skyline inspired by the shining stars that can be seen in the clear desert nights. THE JACKSON LABORATORIESD NUMEROUS PROJECTS – BAR HARBOR, MAINE On Mount Desert Island just off the coast of Maine, in the soft shadow of Acadia National Park's tree-blanketed mountains, lies a cluster of brick buildings. Inside scamper thousands of specially bred research mice. The Jackson Laboratory is one of the most prestigious genetics research entities in the world. For the past 70 years The Jackson Laboratory has been at the forefront of discovering cures for human diseases. Its mouse genetics research is unrivaled. The Laboratory is also the world's source for more than 5,000 strains of genetically defined mice. Projects completed include the foundations stocks building, vivarium importation and exportation facilities, vivarium breeding facilities, BSL 2 and 3 labs, quarantine facilities, tissue culture labs, research labs, offices, and other numerous mouse production support facilities, conferencing centers, ,landscaping and master planning.

KENNEBEC VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE LIBRARY AND CLASSROOM BUILDING - FAIRFIELD, ME.

Through the use of a curved front and two-story entrance the designers were able to accomplish a design that created a central figure in the campus quad, giving order and a hierarchy to the quadrangle. The library space was designed to maximize the natural light while keeping in mind the potential damage to paper. Southern exposure brings in natural light while the northern side of the building makes use of a shed roof to diminish the ultraviolet rays that can harm paper. In the New England Tradition the building materials are contextual, while the buildings expression complements its’ environment with a sense of individual place. The interior of the building is visible to all and the transparency of the southern wall gives unhindered views to the campus quadrangle. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE

JOHN MITCHELL APPLIED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY CENTER - GORHAM, ME

This new LEED-certified facility is home to the School of Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (ASET). The building provides the space and equipment that makes it possible for faculty and students to provide product and manufacturing reliability and safety testing services for local businesses. The gentle slope of the roof from east to west conforms to the sloping grade of the site to reduce the visual impact of the building, which abuts a wooded buffer that defines the campus edge. The roof's wide overhang continues over the entry where it provides protection from both rain and sun for the two story lobby. The use of curtainwall and clear stories for much of the building's envelope takes full advantage of daylighting opportunities, an important factor for the long, often overcast, winter months that are characteristic of New England. In addition to bringing in an abundance of daylight, splashes of rich color on the walls, and warm earth tones on the floors add visual interest and richness to the public spaces. The transparency of the building skin reinforces the link between the interior of the building and the exterior environment. CENTRAL MAINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TECHNICAL LEARNING CENTER - AUBURN, MAINE This two-story center has computer classrooms that can be adapted for varied uses, enabling a technical college to expand high-demand programs and accommodate a new associate in arts degree track. The center has a contemporary, high-tech look that blends well with other buildings on campus. A glassed-in pedestrian bridge connects with an adjacent building, offering easy access and protection from the weather. The site layout takes full advantage of solar orientation. Classrooms are on north side, minimizing glare on computer screens; faculty offices and small, student lounges are on the sunny, south side -- an arrangement that facilitates student-faculty interactions. 19,000 sq. ft.

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE HITCHNER HALL ADDITION AND RENOVATIONS - ORONO, MAINE The design presents an image compatible with a contemporary, modern science facility and is also in harmony with surrounding “Georgian� campus buildings. A pedestrian bridge allows easy access between new and renovated areas. Additions and renovations to the teaching and research laboratory building provides new labs that will allow for expanded biotechnology and aquatics research and to consolidate the food science programs. A three story research wing, houses new labs, and a 6,000 sq .ft. food processing pilot plant. Modular labs for flexibility, 700 sq. ft. each, can be easily adapted to diverse research programs. Office space incorporated within the modules adds convenience. Common equipment alcoves and the general organization of the building encourage communication; inter lab sharing, and cooperation. The unique food processing lab allows for flexibility in layouts, allowing minimum downtime when reconfiguring. The high bay lab can be set up with a variety of equipment and processes The HVAC system provides 100 percent outside air to the laboratory spaces. A Phoenix controls VAV system maintains air-pressure balance based on exhaust air requirements. The facility utilizes a low outside air intake with a high exhaust to maintain air quality and HEPA filtration for laboratory supply air. A glycol heat-recovery system recovers exhaust air heat and reintroduces it into the intake air stream to improve energy use. Electrical and communications systems throughout the entire facility were replaced. A double ended 1500 kVA substation provides redundant capacity throughout. A stand by generator provides power to specific lab equipment and systems sensitive to a power outage, including the existing aquaculture facilities. A condition power system provides improved power quality to sensitive lab equipment. 146,000 s.f.

UNIVERISTY OF MAINE SAWYER ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH CENTER - ORONO, MAINE This new center made it possible for the university to enhance its graduate research program in highly sophisticated fields such as environmental chemistry. The building is not only designed for current research, but can also be easily reconfigured as needs change. Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems serving the laboratories, for example, are exposed in the corridors for easy access and modification. Although research needs dictated a two-story building with high ceilings, elements like the hipped roof provide a human scale that complements the wooded setting. Recognized for Design Excellence by Maine AIA 26,000 sq. ft.

MEMORIAL UNION ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS - ORONO, MAINE

The revisions to Memorial Union, a 1950s era building, is designed to be the center for student activities. A desire to incorporate natural light was the driving force behind the design of this bright, airy student center at the University of Maine, which features a two story, skylit atrium, and a cascading waterfall to counteract the long gray winters. A wall of windows in the dining area overlooks a covered porch and garden. Diners have many choices in the new facility, from a food court and pub a Marche’ servery, and coffee shops. A more traditional cafeteria is also included. A computer lounge allows students Internet access. Areas both inside and outside the center are designed to encourage the interaction among students that is integral to the college experience. INAMORI INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR ETHICS AND EXCELLENCE - CLEVELAND, OH Dr. Kazuo Inamori, founder of Kyocera established the Inamori Foundation and created the Kyoto Prize, a prestigious international award. The purpose of the Inamori Center is to foster ethical leadership around the world. The Inamori Center provides a wide variety of seminar space and flexible teaching spaces are a requirement of Inamori. Movable furnishings allow for alternative teaching configurations in small seminar rooms, as well as large classrooms. Retractable sliding walls in the Inamori Center create a Japanese sense of spatial subdivision, and permit a quick and easy transformation of seminar rooms into large classrooms, meeting rooms or banquet rooms. Separate resource rooms and library spaces provide students with an opportunity to interact socially with fellow students and faculty as well as easy access to resource material. UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY BILL J. POPE SCIENCE CENTER - OREM, UTAH

Nestled on the valley below the Uinta Mountains the Bill J. Pope Science Center houses the department of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, earth science education, physical science, integrated studies, physics and physics education. The facilities open plan and the numerous and varied gathering options was designed to foster interaction and cross pollination of creative thought. The Pope Science Building also features a central three story atrium with a Foucault Pendulum, a planetarium and multiple exterior decks that can be used for outside laboratory studies. The project included the development of the campus entry, and a new student quadrangle and a new building for the Environmental Technology Management Center. To complement the healthy outdoor live style of Utahn’s, the campus offers numerous water features and outdoor amphitheaters. All of the central campus buildings are linked with broad internal walkways to make the environment more conducive to the heavy winter snow storms. EASTERN MAINE MEDICAL CENTER BREWER PROFESSIONAL CENTER - BREWER, MAIN

This 142,000 sq.ft. building houses administrative personnel for a regional medical center in central Maine. The building is the first of four which, when completed, will create a complex totaling more than 450,000 sq.ft. For administrative, clinical and research space. This building, along with the other three buildings in the complex will connect to a circular core, allowing easy access between each facility and sharing of several core program areas. In keeping with the goal of the Eastern Maine Healthcare, the building utilizes floor to ceiling window openings to bring the outside in and share natural light through the entire building footprint. This natural light also floods the two story entry lobby that creates an inviting statement that demonstrates a level of building quality that can be used as a recruiting tool to lure future professionals. The layout of each floor is similar, with repetitive bay sizes, central utility and service core and large open areas which can be fit out as needed by various departments and are flexible to accommodate changing needs.

Central Maine Medical Center This "fast-track" patient carecenter is an example of one ofthe latest trends in health caredelivery. Patients coming to the emergency room at the hospital are evaluated by the medical staff, and those whose injuries or illnesses are less serious are treated here, in the FirstCare Center. This leaves the emergency room staff free to treat those with more serious ailments and reduces the time that all patients spend waiting. The center is designed to look more like a doctor's office than an emergency room. The color scheme, the furnishings, and the lighting were specially chosen to add to the effect and lessen patients' anxiety. 3,900 sq. ft.

The new operating room is a general surgical room outfitted with special lighting and ventilation equipment as well as emergency backup and medical gas systems.

Central Maine With aN addition, this hospital was able to install the latest equipment for radiation and to offer a procedure that area residents previously had to travel 150 miles to Boston to get. The equipment, a linear accelerator, is very heavy and requires lead shielding. By installing it in an addition instead of the building itself, designers saved over $500,000 because structural changes to accommodate the weight of the equipment were avoided. An environment that helps put patients at ease was a priority for the addition and renovations in the rest of the unit. New finishes and a redesigned waiting room and changing rooms were carefully planned for a more comforting and less institutional ambiance.

101ST AIR REFUELING WING - BASE CIVIL ENGINEERING BUILDING - BANGOR, MAINE

This building consolidates the Guard’s civil engineering activities and uses pure geometric shapes and exposed steel to reflect the unit's mission and work. The bright yellow steel on a projecting canopy makes it easy for visitors to locate the building and its entrance. Clerestory windows flood the reception area with natural light. The glazed entry lets adjacent spaces share the light. The curved, wing-like form of the maintenance, storage, and workshop area provides the high ceilinged bays needed to work on large vehicles and also reflects an aeronautical image. Keeping repair shops separate from offices minimizes interference from noise. The building also houses the “Prime BEEF” (Base Emergency Engineering Force). Fire protection for the flight line and all facilities at the Maine Air National Guard base is provided from this two-story station located next to the main taxiway. The station has seven bays for emergency vehicles on the first floor, and living quarters for fire fighters on duty on the second. A specialized ventilation system keeps fumes from vehicles or aircraft from migrating into the living spaces. A repair shop for fire apparatus is conveniently located on the first floor near the equipment bays. Training rooms are also on the second floor, along with administrative offices for supervisory personnel. A communications center in operation 24 hours a day has a clear view of the flight line. 13,300 sq.- ft.

This building brings flight crews and maintenance staff of the Guard unit together in one building for the first time and is carefully planned to match routines so the unit can respond quickly when needed. Because the building is close to the flight line, acoustical glass is used in the large windows that provide good visibility to the runway. And a system that filters air three times keeps jet-fuel exhaust from being a problem inside the building. The command and control center has a full complement of sophisticated secure communication, and employs EMI / RFI shielding technology. And large and small classrooms address training and briefing needs. 43,000 sq- ft.

UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE EASTERN MAINE MAIL PROCESSING & DISTRIBUTION FACILITY - HAMPDEN, MAINE Nestling this large building into a hillside reduced its visual impact and took advantage of a small, steep site with numerous easements. Open round-the-clock, the facility handles mail from over 250 local post offices. Loading docks and main entrances are bathed in sunlight on winter days. And light from inside the facility turns a two story stair tower into a beacon after dark, giving night-shift workers a cheerful entrance. The insulated aluminum panels on the exterior were specially selected to keep humidity and temperature levels needed to operate mail-sorting equipment. UNITED STATES NAVAL WAR COLLEGE SPRUANCE HALL - NAVAL STATION NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Spruance Hall is a Single story 20,400 sf building whose main function supports a 725 seat lecture hall with ancillary support spaces, 5 medium sized seminar rooms to the rear of the auditorium that serve as overflow seating for the auditorium or as separate classrooms as well as a 7,100 sf mezzanine that houses 16 senior faculty offices. This project provides the needed capacity and capability to house state-of –the-art collaborative learning environments, with high level audio visual, communications and recording systems. The project also projects the forward thinking systems and instructional technologies of the Naval War College’s educational conferencing center to visiting International Naval personnel attending the College as either students or conference attendees, presenters or visiting dignitaries. The building is located on the historic Naval Station Newport on Coastal Harbor Island, with a commanding view of Narragansett Bay.
