Using a fun concept, the chorus completed two successful shows over the last weekend. The chorus held one show (shopping trip) at Church of the Nazarene in Venice. After they shopped all of Venice, they headed for a second performance (more shopping) at First Presbyterian Church in Port Charlotte. The chorus has a number of members hailing from the Port Charlotte area so it seemed logical to try a performance in that area. And it worked! The overall attendance at both shows exceeded the previous year's attendance at only the Venice location. This was the first show with new director, Jim Shubert. We must admit that the hit of the performances was Crosstown Connection, a quartet including Jim as bass. This quartet was Sunshine District Senior Quartet Champions in 2010. They also were Illinois District Senior Quartet champions in 2008. Three chorus quartets also entertained. C-Breeze, String of Pearls and Under the Radar brought their best to the stages. Under the Radar also joined Crosstown Connection for the barbershop classic--Lida Rose/Dream of Now.

Marketing Coordinator CATHY MOORE Suncoast Harmony marketing@sairegion9.com

The quartets also delivered a number of Singing Valentines on Feb. 14. They report they are not sure who had the most fun--the listeners or the singers. Now it's on to competition preparation. With these successful shows, all members are looking forward to performing for Region 9 and the judges in April.

O-Town Sound—chartered and oh so busy! Since September much has happened in our lives! We sang for the Regional Membership and Education Team Leaders the end of September wearing our very first costume! Then we received our charter and celebrated with friends and family at a wonderful charter party on October 29, 2011 It started as a black & white affair and during the evening we then added red in a multitude of ways to complete our chorus’ signature colors! The installation of our management team, including referrals to the color red, was one highlight of the evening. We had to find a new rehearsal venue during this time and we were blessed to be welcomed at the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church on south Hiawassee Road in SW Orlando. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7p - 10p. Our new venue is very accessible from the turnpike, I-4, the East-West Expressway and the Beachline Expressway so please come and visit us. The month of November was a whirlwind of preparation activity for several Christmas performances within the Central Florida community, from Lake County to Disney, starting the weekend after Thanksgiving and ending on December 23, 2011. We took a hiatus from rehearsals the last half of December and resumed January 2nd, excited to prepare for our debut performance before our Region Nine sisters at Winter Regional. We were truly awed by all of your gifts and words of welcome & encouragement both before and after Winter Regional. Thank you all so much! Embracing the SAI Global Membership Drive, we held a guest night on January 30th. We had 13 guests and we stood on our very own risers for the very first time! Then two weeks later, on February 13th, we participated in The Orlando Arts Fest. We had another dozen guests come to hear our rehearsal and a short performance. As of this writing, we have grown to 31 members which we think is pretty amazing! On February 18th, we held an all day coaching session with Alexis Delaney, Associate Director of Song of Atlanta and the lead in Virtuosity to work on our competition package. We are looking forward to our very first regional competition and again sharing our love of our craft with all of the wonderful choruses of Region 9. We also have a “new to us” costume to show you all! We have one more performance (in the Villages) on March 24th before we can completely focus on competition. We are viewing this as a pre-test to being on the competition stage! So, as we say at the end of every rehearsal “it’s great to be in O-Town Sound!”

Regional Convention MARSHA WILLIAMS O -Town Sound marswilliams35@yahoo.com

It’s been a topsy-turvy quarter for Song of the Coast Chorus. We lost a beloved director as Faye McLanahan surrendered the baton in favor of a life, one that includes more time for her family and the Jacksonville chorus. In the aftermath of Faye’s departure, chorus members decided to forego 2012 regional competition, search thoughtfully for a new director and re-think its identity. Late January found Song of the Coast performing to an appreciative audience at the Flagler Home and Lifestyle Show on the Flagler Palm Coast High School campus, under the direction of associate director Diane Johnson. The presence of associate directors such as Diane encouraged the chorus to continue musical development during the hiatus between directors. Happily, the hiatus was of short duration. In mid-February, the members named a new chorus director. The dynamic and creative Chris Garrott, a relative newcomer to Florida, is a 10-year veteran of SAI Region 19, where she directed Freedom Valley Chorus (Chambersburg, PA), served on the regional marketing and membership staff and earned her Certified Director credential. Since joining SOTC in May 2011, she has served as baritone section leader, associate director and taping coordinator. She continues to sing baritone in the frontline SLQ quartet. In cooperation with Chris, the music committee is developing exciting plans for the coming year that will combine the chorus’s traditional community service activities with new performance goals. The leads, baritones, basses and tenors from Daytona Beach anticipate a sterling future.

WOMEN OF NOTE

Shoshana Davidowitz

Women of Note Announces Two New Certified Directors There are so many fabulous benefits from being a Sweet Adeline and being a member of an SAI chorus! Making music, making friends, having a night out (especially appreciated by mother’s of young children!), and having an opportunity to perform your craft in front of appreciative audiences. But perhaps the most rewarding benefit is that of education. Sweet Adelines International offers so many opportunities for their members to develop leadership skills, build self-confidence, and to enhance performance techniques that they can then pass on to other members. This year, the Women of Note are thrilled that two of our own, Mitch Greenberg and Debbie Edwards, have reached their goal of becoming SAI Certified Directors. Mitch Greenberg, director of the Women of Note, was awarded his Director’s Certification this past January during Region 9's Winter Workshop. Along with his comedic skills and passion for barbershop, Mitch has all the tools that make him a successful director. An active barbershopper since 1994, Mitch has sung in various quartets and choruses, achieving a BHS District Champion medal and competing at International three times. He is a former men's chorus director and held many leadership positions in the Sunshine District. The chorus is flourishing under Mitch’s very capable leadership and looks forward to the journey ahead. That same weekend, our Assistant Director Debbie Edwards was awarded her Certified Director pin! Debbie is an outstanding member of Women of Note Chorus and Sunsation Quartet! She is a true blue barbershopper for 13 years and counting! Debbie is a former chorus Team Leader and currently serves on the Music and Marketing Teams, as the Quartet Promotions Coordinator and as baritone section teacher. In her role as Assistant Director, she inspires the entire chorus with her positive attitude, musicianship and enthusiasm for barbershop. The Women of Note could not be more proud of our two new Certified Directors and we look forward to learning and growing under their leadership. WO-MAN!

Regional Financial Assessment Change Rhonda Payton, Communications Coordinator

Maybe you heard a little about it at Winter Workshop in January. You might be talking about it with your chorus mates and wondering about the why, how, when, etc. Your Region 9 Management Team had a look at many methods to keep the Region effective and financially solvent going forward. We evaluated ideas internal to our Region, and viewed the ways several other regions were handling dues, expenses and competition registrations. We considered multiple options and believe the selected approach of combining current dues with the annual Regional Convention registration will most effectively serve the members of our choruses and Chapter-at-Large. Rest assured that the Region 9 Management Team takes seriously both its fiduciary responsibility to the Region and the satisfaction of our members. So rather than reinvent the wheel, as they say, please go to the Region 9 website and have a look at the Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQs) we have posted there. Thanks for being a talented and loyal member of Region 9!

PLATINUM COAST In January, PCC joined our sisters around the world as we celebrated our love of barbershop harmony by throwing open our doors during the SAI Global Open House. We invited our guests to join us on the risers for both physical and vocal warm-ups; performed a mini concert for their listening pleasure; engaged them in rehearsing and singing along with us on tags; got them laughing as they participated in an easy barbershop version of “How Much Is that Doggie in the Window” and achieved a resounding rendition of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” We gained a new member as a result, with a few more interested ladies in the wings. February meant that Valentine’s Day was at hand and lovers of all ages were destined to extol the attributes of their Sweethearts, near and far. Platinum Coast Chorus sang praises to our friends and families’ by delivering Singing Valentines and by sharing an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment at our Annual Show, “Love is On the Air.” This year’s show was presented in a radio call-in show format featuring Adeline and her very best friend and producer, Roz. Adeline dispensed wise words of advice to the lovelorn and chose songs to suit the mood on their “Love is On the Air” program. Naturally they had the “help of live backup singers,” the talented ladies of the Platinum Coast Chorus. In the show, Adeline had love problems of her own. Moreover, her station manager, Mr. Pennypincher, made an announcement that put the radio show’s future in doubt. With her show in jeopardy and her love life on the rocks, Adeline had a hard time deciding what to do, let alone give sage advice to her talk show callers! How would she keep her show, keep her boyfriend, and most important of all, save her chorus? All was revealed through a variety of love songs including Can You Feel the Love Tonight?; Lipstick on Your Collar; Yesterday; When I Fall in Love; and Only You to name a few. PCC was thrilled to host the 7th place Sweet Adeline International Quartet winners, Bling!, as our featured Guest Performers. Weaving our way through January and February activities, numerous Outreach Performances, the writing and submission of a Community Foundation Grant and a diligent search for a new Director. To that end, we are pleased to announce that Lisa Lupo, an Associate Director of the Women of Note Chorus, a long-standing member of Sweet Adelines and a member of the award-winning quartet Odyssey, has agreed to come aboard and take her position at our helm! Lisa shares, “I try and live my life based on the quote: “When you’re blessed in life with talent, you’re charged with using it to make the world a better place.” PCC welcomes you, Lisa as we together embark on our shared journey and mission...to promote the musical art form of barbershop harmony through performance, education and outreach, thereby enriching the lives of the people in our community.

SOUTHERN COMPANY Heidi Noyes Greetings Region 9! We’ve had many changes in our chorus in the last six months. First, we have a new director. Her name is Linda Verzosa, and it if sounds familiar to you, it’s because she is a veteran member of the Toast of Tampa Show Chorus. Linda joined us on October 1, 2011. On December 1, 2011 we changed our name from South Shore Sound to Southern Company Chorus. We did this for many reasons, but the main one was because we are no longer located in Sun City Center, FL. We are currently located in Brandon, FL which is just east of Tampa. We have been here since 2009. We’ve been having a great time and have had the opportunity for many performances. We sang at the Winthrop Winter Festival on December 2nd and also for a couple of Christmas parties. On March 29th we sang at what will probably be our most memorable event. We were invited to sing at the Hillsborough County High School Show Chorus Show Case. The audience was filled with parents and high school students. We were the second group up. During our closing song the fire alarm went off. It had gone off earlier so we knew that it was a false alarm – so we kept on singing and the alarm kept on ringing for 8 bars. It seemed like an eternity. When the alarm shut- off we were all together and singing in Key! But the most endearing moment of the whole event was when the students started a standing ovation. We’re still laughing about the whole thing.
