The Wagenhallen Atlas: analyses for strategic design projects is a joint product of students on the MSc IUSD at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Design, University of Stuttgart in the winter term 2011. The Wagenhallen and Nordbahnhof area is a special place. It is very close to Stuttgart’s city centre and main station, but tucked away behind railway lines and thoroughfares. If one steps into the area a parallel universe unfolds: an obscure oasis filled with traces of former railways use, now mostly overgrown or transformed by unusual activites and programmes. To embrace Sleeping Beauty as a starting point for urban development could provide new answers to timely questions: Can the use-oriented and actor-driven urbanisation which is already taking place on the site be used in a new development approach? This atlas is a starting point for understanding the city differently. It will be used as a resource for the Transforming Wagenhallen and Nordbahnhof Project and hopefully beyond.
