FINAL DAYS  TO  GET  PUMPKINS   U-­‐Pick  pumpkin  booth  open  until  October  30th   Come  and  get  your  fall  season  pumpkins  before  it  is  too  late!  We   are  running  a  ‘buy  one,  get  one  half-­‐off’  sale  (of  equal  or  lesser   value).   The  Northside  Pumpkin  Patch  is  open  until  October  30th  and  our   hours  are  Monday-­‐Friday  3-­‐7,  Saturday  12-­‐6,  and  we  are  closed  on   Sundays.  The  Pumpkin  Patch  is  located  at  2020  North  5th  Street,  in   Niles,  MI  49120,  directly  behind  the  school.    The  proceeds  from  the   pumpkin  go  towards  the  Niles  Community  Schools  and  the  Niles   Community  Gardens.

Niles Community  Gardens  Officially   Wins  DeLoach  Community  Garden   Grant!  

Niles  Community  Gardens  wants  to  thank  all  who  helped  vote  for  us  in  the   DeLoach  Community  Garden  Grant  voting  competition.    After  5  months  of   voting  daily,  we  received  more  votes  than  any  other  community  garden  in   North  America!  Wow!     We  could  not  have  done  it  without  your  help!     Go  to  to  check  out  the  official   announcement!

A Fall  Season  Treat  -­‐  Homemade   Mulled  Apple  Cider!    

Ingredients: • • •   •   •  

Yields 8  cups  

8 cups unpasteurized apple cider A 3-inch cinnamon stick 10 whole cloves 1 navel orange, peeled and sliced crosswise A 2-inch piece of peeled fresh ginger, cut into 6 slices

In a large saucepan combine the cider, the cinnamon stick, the cloves, the orange and the ginger and simmer the mixture for 20 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a heat-proof pitcher and serve the mulled cider warm. Read More

- Kid’s Corner Craft Scary Gourd Ghosts! Do you  have  too  many  gourds  lying  around  in  your  garden   that  you  don’t  know  what  to  do  with?    Why  not  use  them   for  a  great  Halloween  craft  for  your  kids  while  they  carve   their  pumpkins!    Make  it  your  new  fall  tradition!   All  you  need  are  some  dried  gourds  (gooseneck  or  kettle   gourds  look  the  best),  a  bit  of  sand  paper  and  some  white   and  black  craft  paint.   Step  1:  lightly  sand  your  gourd  surface  smooth     Step  2:  paint  2-­‐3  coats  of  white  paint  over  the  gourds  and   let  dry  between  coats     Step  3:  paint  a  ghost  mouth  and  eyes  on  the  gourd.    You   can  change  the  placement  of  the  ghost  face  depending  on   which  type  of  gourd  you  used!     This  is  a  fun  and  easy  craft  to  do  with  children!    Have  a   happy  Halloween!   4
